John Terry Will Face Criminal Charges For Racial Slur
John Terry channels the Imperial ethos, a little too well. The Chelsea and England captain faces criminal charges for an alleged racist slur directed at QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during an Oct. 23 match. He has been accused of a “racially aggravated public order offense.”
Terry was caught on film calling Ferdinand a “f*cking black c*nt.” Terry’s defense was that cameras caught him aggressively denying to Ferdinand that he had called him a “f*cking black c*nt.” He was amazed that taunting Americans about 9/11, peeing in nightclubs, seducing 17-year-olds, impregnating a teammate’s girlfriend, displaying a wanton disregard for England’s disabled, allegedly accepting bribes and attempting a mid-World Cup coup might have led people to believe he could be so callous.
The English FA sent a firm message yesterday, handling a lengthy suspension to Luis Suarez. If Terry does not receive a similar punishment or worse, that message will ring hallow (and John Henry will go into a full Dan Gilbert meltdown).

Duffy what’s your feeling here? The FA won’t touch it until at least February, but if he is found guilty (which it seems he will be) do you guess that they throw up their hands and leave it at that?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Dude is the biggest piece of shit in England.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Also in a vacuum, his ban has to be markedly higher than Suarez. A lot more evidence and there’s no cultural disconnect issue.
In a vacuum John Terry isn’t England’s captain though.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:42 AM
He should go to jail if for no other reason that thinking this is a good excuse.
Clear intent here, and none of that “cultural divide” element from Suarez’ case. He should be banned for life.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Listen, I’m not advocating racial slurs here but criminal charges? What the fuck?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:43 AM
What a piece of shit.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:45 AM
craig james is going to move to england because he’s competitive like that.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:46 AM
so if he had just called him a “fucking cunt” everything would be fine?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:46 AM
The maximum penalty for these charges is a £2,500 fine. John Terry makes £150,000 a week.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Trickier since he’s the England captain, but I think he gets a lengthy suspension and I think it’s strongly suggested to Capello he shouldn’t be selected for Euro 2012.

whoa, those are cool L’s man.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:48 AM
It could be a dollar and a quarter and it’s still strange to be charged for something you’ve said on an athletic field. Kobe called a referee a faggot last year. He got fined under the rules of the NBA, not the justice system of the US.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Seems like a good dude.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Dude’s mom is a convicted shoplifter, his dad is a convicted drug dealer, and his brother is a lower-level footballer who also banged a teammates wife – that teammate later killed himself over it. Pretty cool family.

As history has shown, it’s never a good idea to assail a Ferdinand.

This is going to blow your mind, but England is not the United States. They don’t have a First Amendment there.
Whoa!

i remember reading that dubai article that goes into their labor…your quote put into words the reaction i could only vaguely describe to the indifferent british reaction from those interviewed.

How in the fuck do they pick their team captains over there? Biggest asshole wins?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:51 AM
As history has shown, it’s never a good idea to assail a Ferdinand.
+1 system of interlocking alliances.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:52 AM
The moral of the story is to call people a “fucking cunt” at work.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:52 AM
How in the fuck do they pick their team captains over there? Biggest asshole wins?
In addition to being a world class asshole, he also happens to be a world class football player. I think the latter fact might have been a part of the decision making process.

So when is the CIA going to stage a coup d’etat in North Korea?
/only half joking
//would be nice to have a less oppressive government in that part of the world
December 21st, 2011 at 10:53 AM
pretty much.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Bravo. Can’t compare two different countries, SC.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:53 AM
It’s easy to leave him off the Euro squad since he sucks. If it happened 4 years ago….there might have been more of an excuse made for him. There shouldn’t be criminal charges but it is England, different laws. In the heat of battle a lot of crazy things get said, but since he is supposed to be the captain of the country, he’s held to a higher standard. If Leighton Baines said it, he would have been suspended 3 games and it would be over with. But JT has shown consistently wanton lack of regard for civility so they’re coming down hard on him.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Never going to happen as China will do anything to keep N Korea upright.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Agreed, how is that slur racial?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Oppresive? C’mon man! North Korea is all about equality and fairness for the common folk.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Unfortunately, corporate politics works this way too.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:56 AM
You’re joking, right? Anytime you throw the person’s race in front of the rest of the insult, it’s meant to be racial.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Agreed, how is that slur racial?
He didn’t call him a “fucking cunt”. He called him a “fucking black cunt”. The modifier makes it a racial slur.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:56 AM
i mean, you’re focusing on north korea when china’s right there? ignore the pimple bro, there’s a tumor right around the corner.

Not anymore. Part of the “golden generation” of English football that never even made a major international final, nevermind win a trophy. England will be better off in the Euros without him (and Gerrard, Lampard, Rio, etc.).
December 21st, 2011 at 10:57 AM
I ahte to do this, because I know we aren’t going to see eye to eye on this, but when is the last time anyone’s been called a “White fucking cunt”. The racism is kind of hidden in the differentiation.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Quite aware the US Constitution doesn’t extend outside our borders but thanks, chaps. It’s a comment referring to the absurdity of charging a guy for something he said during competition. Something that was an awful thing to say but holding someone criminally liable for it is ridiculous.
December 21st, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Btw…..Wayne Bridge had broken up with the girl when Terry slept with her. But still….dodgy behaviour. With the pregame handshake when they played against each other, Wayne refused to shake his hand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw_W-A5-zoU

So soft European is a racial slur right?
December 21st, 2011 at 10:59 AM
he didn’t say he was a fucking black cunt, he said he had a fucking black cunt. I believe that’s the Garnett defense.

So if I’m in England and someone says to me they are going to kick my white arse they can get criminal charges?
December 21st, 2011 at 11:01 AM
I wasn’t trying to debate whether or not this was an example of a racial slur, I was trying to figure out if we’d even be talking about this right now had Terry left off the word “black.”

Well yeah….the point being though that he’s still one of the faces of the English national team. Whether he should be or not is of course another question.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:02 AM
This is kind of my vein of thinking.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Mike Tyson laughs at John Terry’s feeble use of racial modifiers.
“Put your mother in a straight-jacket you punk ass white boy. Come here and tell me that, I’ll fuck you in your ass you punk white boy. You faggot. You can’t touch me, you’re not man enough. I’ll eat your asshole alive, you bitch. C’mon anybody in here can’t fuck with this. This is the ultimate, man. Fuck you, you ho. Come and say it to my face…. I’ll fuck you in the ass in front of everybody. You bitch…. come on, you bitch. You’re scared coward, you’re not man enough to fuck with me. You can’t last two minutes in my world, bitch. Look at you scared now, you ho…. scared like a little white pussy. Scared of the real man. I’ll fuck you ’til you love me, faggot!”

You’re still looking at it from an American point of view. Freedom of speech is near sacrosanct in this country. It’s not a concept that is as developed in western Europe as it is here, where we have both a Constitutional Amendment and numerous Supreme Court decisions which establish a huge spectrum of things that people have the freedom to say and do in public and private.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:05 AM
I remember watching him saying this. And I remember loving it. Won’t lie. Long Live Iron Mike.

As soon as I got to “funny hats” the Benny Hill music was already playing in my head.
God bless his smutty soul.

December 21st, 2011 at 11:07 AM
according to golf writers, yes. however, take that with a grain of salt considering they count south africans as european.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:08 AM
I love how he ended the Lewis rant by saying “Praise be to Allah” at the end. Fan fucking tastic.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:08 AM
They’re probably going to all this trouble because everyone in the organization thinks Terry is a horrible person. They were just waiting for him to fuck up in any way possible so they could pounce.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:08 AM
I’m well aware, ms. No need to continue the history lesson.
You keep expressing disbelief, so it doesn’t sound like you are aware.
And “No need to continue the history lesson”? Come on. Look who you’re talking to here.

I’m sorry, this is a country where people are still given criminal charges in some states for using profanity in public and WE’RE the paragon for freedom of expression when another country is doing the same for racial abuse? Y’all are fucking stupid sometimes.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:09 AM
My favourite Tyson quote:
[To a female reporter] “It’s no doubt I am going to win this fight and I feel confident about winning this fight. I normally don’t do interviews with women unless I fornicate with them. So you shouldn’t talk anymore… Unless you want to, you know.”
December 21st, 2011 at 11:10 AM
i think we all can figure out what Mike Tyson did on his first day in Federal Prison, and it wasn’t bein’ a bitch or beating someone up.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:10 AM
damn. He should have been like that in the 80s

after watching a 3.5 minute long occupy wall street commercial that featured the single worst song ever recorded on free speech TV last night, i feel like we might want to tighten up the qualifications for who gets to speak freely.

Who said we’re the paragon of freedom of expression. I was only stating that the concept of free speech is different from Europe and the U.S. I don’t think there was any implication of a value judgment between the two.

I’m getting a strong “wow I can’t believe they’re doing this, but then I’m American and our laws don’t allow this” vibe in here. Which is just dead wrong. This is, if anything, more progressive and less restrictive than many of the laws we have.

one man threw an insult at another. The basis of the insult was an attack on the other guy’s manhood, which is an individual attack, and his race, which isn’t.

I agree to an extent. Violence is fine so long as no one uses any curse words….what else can we expect from a country that was founded primarily by Puritans who then carved out their God-inspired societies here by killing as many Natives as possible.

ms can back me up on this, but the slaves got the right to vote a few decades before women, so you’re going to have to wait a while.
Indeed. Black Americans received the right to vote with the ratification of the 15th Amendment in 1870. Women received the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
Prior to the Civil War, the Abolitionist movement and the Women’s Rights movements were closely aligned with one another. When the events of the Civil War and Reconstruction led to Congressional movements to end slavery, give all citizens the same protections under the Constitution, and all males the right to vote, Women’s Rights activists and suffragettes were outraged by the Abolitionist movement abandoning them. Frederick Douglass famously responded that “This was the black man’s time. The time for the woman will come later”.

True, but they were also doing so in the name of God (even though they were actually looking for gold and natural resources). The only difference was that their profession of faith was Catholicism rather than Puritanical Protestantism.
