JaVale McGee Dunked on 76ers’ Rookie Nikola Vucevic, Then Stared at Him to Send a Message
JaValelevator McGee, the shot-blocking machine with trampoline hops who famously pursued a triple-double last year with the zeal of Ricky Davis, threw down a thunderous dunk Tuesday on the head of young Nikola Vucevic. McGee’s slam was a violent and bone-rattling; it rivaled what DeAndre Jordan did to the Lakers Monday. Mr. Vucevic is a rookie from USC who has some promise at a power forward; McGee is an emerging star who turns 24 in January and averaged 10-8-2.4 last year. Get to know your NBA players – the season begins Sunday. [video via @Jose3030]

So I watched Bridesmaids last night, god help me it was funny. I still don’t really find women that funny in general, but it was a solid solid movie.

Stupid article. But I wouldn’t mind adding Rick Nash.
Hmmm. Ericsson, Gator, Sheahan, Tatar, 2 1sts and Sproul.

fuckin’ nba.
just contract 1/3 of the league, eliminate jump shots, and turn into full court, full contact dunk shows.
and also have the rim raise and lower randomly, a la wipeout obstacles.

megan mccarthy is funny as hell and carried that movie.

I was waiting until these unis came out to get my John Wall jersey.
And JaVale is an idiot, but damn athletic. He’s frustrating to watch.

As I’ve said before, I do not want to have children because of the one in a billion chance they end up looking like Maya Rudolph.

1.) Still only counted for two points.
2.) His team lost.
Well done, though.

Got one part right….eliminating the least efficient shot in the game would make for better offense.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:37 AM
Doesn’t seem to have the court awareness to be a star. I think he’ll fill up stat sheets but doubt he becomes anything more than a dunker/shot blocker.
Think his ceiling is Tyson Chandler.

I loved his quote regarding the extension:
December 21st, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Chandler at least can play help D efficiently. There’s a bunch of comments I made going into the NBA finals last year where I kept saying the Mavs only chance was to zone the shit out of the Heat with Chandler, and hope they can’t keep hitting open threes. Can McGee play that kind of zone with limited court awareness? There’s more to that than just blocking a couple shots a game, for sure.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:44 AM
Midrange j’s = worst and least efficient shot in basketball
December 21st, 2011 at 11:44 AM
“I think I live a humble life,” Rose said. “Of course, I know I’ll be able to afford whatever I want, but other than that, there aren’t too many things that excite me. Me winning is one of the things. Me being around my family, that’s another. Money, that’s the last thing I think about.”
Is that what he wrote for his SAT essay?

December 21st, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Really? What about the foot on the line 3-pointers? Either way… if you eliminate that shot, won’t the D collapse to the rim and then you will miss a highly-contested lay-up?
December 21st, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I only saw about 10 minutes of the Bulls last night, Butters. Rip looked good though. Finding the soft spots on the floor and waiting for the ball. Made a couple slick passes to Jo to after shot fakes.
Still think they’re a piece short of the Finals but Rip is a solid addition because of his movement off the ball. Hope Thibs monitors Derrick’s minutes especially when they hit those b2b2b stretches.

December 21st, 2011 at 11:49 AM

December 21st, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Shots you are good at and practice = good shots.
Shots you suck at = bad shots.
I find it hard to believe the threat of a solid mid-range J isn’t enough to help open up a drive, or a dish for a layup or 3.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Late to the party from the previous post on Mike Tyson quotes. My favorite is, “He called me a rapist and a recluse, I am not a recluse.”
December 21st, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Isn’t whatever open shot you get always your best option?
December 21st, 2011 at 11:56 AM
I guess this could be the case, but I find it hard to beleive anything could make a coach/team stress stopping the rim anymore than they currently do.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:56 AM
this is dumb
December 21st, 2011 at 11:57 AM
That’s all well and good, but you’re never going to be better than 50% at shooting long 2s. It’s a hard shot.
If you just step out to 3, where the good shooters are all better than 40%, your EV jumps way up.
I’m not sure that Rip will help the Bulls that much. He can’t play D anymore, and rather than throwing to Korver for 3, which stretches the D and opens the lane, you’ll be throwing to Rip off of screens for 16-20 footers. It might clog their offense to a degree.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Depends who is taking it though. The expected return on a Kobe contested layup is better than that of an Andrew Bynum 20-footer.
December 21st, 2011 at 11:58 AM
There may be some truth to this.
According to my research, and granted, I’m not that great with the search tool, only 3 teams in the past 20 years have shot over 50% for an entire season. (94/95 UTA .512, 08-09 PHO .504, 07/08 PHO .500).
December 21st, 2011 at 11:58 AM
He can’t play D anymore
Which is why I find the signing odd. Bulls are D-oriented, yes?
December 21st, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Something has to be the least efficient shot in basketball. What is it, if not that?

I’m no Lisk, but I think this may have been true.
Also, a lot more midrange shots were taken, I seem to recollect. Furthermore, more teams ran on purpose as a rule, and a lot of teams used “Indiana shuffle-cut” offenses in the half-court that got you midrange shots.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Something has to be the least efficient shot in basketball. What is it, if not that?
Maybe the baseline 2? Erratic rebound patterns, possibly leading to fast-breaks the other way?
Purely anecdotal, of course.
/missed a lot of corner Js in my day
December 21st, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Long two certainly is the least efficient… but I disagree strongly with the idea of elminating the mid-range jumper entirely. That just seems silly.
Bill Russell didn’t play in the league 20 years ago. You gotta look at FG% for 1960-1970.
Ya think?
I’d eliminate the forward position entirely if teams were just going to shoot 3′s and layups. You’d get all your size inside and all your speed outside, and wouldn’t worry about any versatility. The threat of a two-pointer means you have to guard guys between 5 and 20 feet.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:02 PM
It’s definitely true.
No three point line…
December 21st, 2011 at 12:03 PM
the free throw. even a 95% free throw shooter only expects .95 points per shot whereas a 50% jump shooter can expect 1 point per shot.
/picking nits
December 21st, 2011 at 12:04 PM
That search was just the 3 point era, to make it more relevant. If you open it up to all seasons, it doesn’t change that much. A few teams from the 70s, but nothing from earlier.

December 21st, 2011 at 12:07 PM
No three point line…
Grew up watching my hometown ABA team (Memphis Pros/Tams/Sounds), and later played on the Mid-South Colisuem floor in college. That ABA three-point line was a helluva long way from the basket. Cost/benefit of taking that shot may have been prohibitive to most coaches.
In that same era (early-mid 70s), NBA teams worked hard for either fastbreak layups or midrange shots off curls and picks.
As explosive as the Jordans and Iversons were in their primes, look at their shooting percentages compared to Walt Frazier, Jerry West, et al.
/no “get off my lawn”
December 21st, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Jordan was better than West-Frazier. From the floor and the line.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:21 PM
The least efficient shot in basketball is whatever shot you can’t make. The efficiency of the mid range game is obvious if you’re using the correct definition of efficiency. Dallas won the Championship last year by hitting 3′s, but those 3′s were accomplished by penetration. The penetration was effective because the guards, especially Terry in the last 3 or 4 games were hitting their mid range shots. Dirk, who isn’t the quickest guy in the world, was able to drive to the basket from 12-15 feet out because of the threat of his mid range game. Players like Allan Iverson and Tony Parker have been amongst the league leaders in points in the paint in spite of being short because of their mid range game. Russell Westbrook went nut in the playoffs last year because he wasn’t hitting his mid range shot. Jordan became Jordan when he started hitting his mid range shot..etc. etc.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Defenses in the 90′s and 00′s > defenses in the 60′s and 70′s
December 21st, 2011 at 12:27 PM
McGee is an emerging star
No he isn’t. He has massive hops, a flaky attitude and thinks he’s bad when he aint done shit.
Midrange j’s = worst and least efficient shot in basketball
Midrange shots are only low % if you suck at them. If you actually have proper form and practice the art of shooting, mid-range is deadly.
Something has to be the least efficient shot in basketball. What is it, if not that?
Depends on the offense and where the defense is sending help from. These NBA coaches spend nights thinking of ways to get your wings shooting from places they have low %’s from/
December 21st, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I’m always baffled by people who think the players of today can’t shoot compared to yesteryear…there’s a reason Bill Russell could grab 25 rebounds a game, no one made a goddamn thing
Pace of play is key. That’s why Lebron’s last seasons with the Cavs were equal to Oscar’s triple double season if you compare pace of play.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Jordan was better than West-Frazier. From the floor and the line.
Link?
/hides my head in the sand, for when the numbers bear this out
Defenses in the 90′s and 00′s > defenses in the 60′s and 70′s
Really? They why is one of the main complaints about watching the NBA on TV is the lack of defensive intensity? I think (think) that is a real “chicken or egg” question – are the lower shooting percentages caused by better defense or bad shot selection?
December 21st, 2011 at 12:32 PM
(love arguing this point, but I am also troubleshooting my HP printer – any HP Deskjet experts out there?)
December 21st, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Of course, of course. And it all depends on the defense, certainly.
But Kobe can dunk, shoot 3s, and hit 18 footers.
Given wide open shots from all 3, which should he take?
December 21st, 2011 at 12:38 PM
take LAST*
December 21st, 2011 at 12:43 PM
definitely not the free throw.
/srsly
December 21st, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Penetration was accomplished because of the threat the 3. Defenders had to chase them off the 3 point line leading to draw and kicks.
Also, games 3-5 Terry was 6-16 on long 2′s. I doubt that’s what was driving Spo’s defensive philosphy.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:48 PM
The FT number needs to be doubled since you are shooting 2 of them. So a 95% shooter would have 1.9 ppp which is damn good.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:53 PM
The complaint about the NBA in the 70′s and 80′s was that they didn’t play defense until the last 2 minutes of the games. The complaint about the NBA in the 90′s was that game had too much defense and it was slowing down the game. So, they brought in the zone defense, which makes this time not as defensively grinding as the 90′s, but still more attention to defense than the you got your man, I got my man defense played in the 60′s and 70′s.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:54 PM
Really? They lead the league in points in the paint because of their mid range game? Not because of their quickness, athletic ability, explosiveness, dribbling ability, or body control?
December 21st, 2011 at 12:57 PM
wide open shots from the 3 he’s going to hit and miss. wide open pull up J’s from 15-18 feet is going to create assist, offensive rebound, and driving opportunities
December 21st, 2011 at 12:59 PM
even with those attributes, they were still amongst the league leaders in getting their shots blocked. Without a mid range game, those numbers would be even higher.
December 21st, 2011 at 12:59 PM
****without a mid range to keep defenders off balance
December 21st, 2011 at 1:01 PM
wow. this math is incredible. can I subscribe to your newsletter? and did basketball eliminate and-1′s and 1-and-1′s?
/snarky response telling you you’re doubly wrong
December 21st, 2011 at 1:09 PM
Well, 1-1s are eliminated in the NBA. So, looking at points per possession, a possession entails 2 FT’s. I tihnk we’re just looking at idfferent things. You are looking at points per individual shots and we are talking about points per possession.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:13 PM
Well, there’s no 1-and-1′s in the NBA.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:16 PM
holy shit…is that true? I REALLY should watch more NBA basketball than just the Playoffs.
December 21st, 2011 at 1:23 PM
I was just being a dick. if you guys are talking per possession, you’re absolutely correct. I was straight up talking per shot like you inferred.
