Such a shame, they were great cars and then GM bought them, turned them into generic GM crap, and completely ruined them. I had a 1999 93 turbo for like 8 years, thing absolutely flew.

how does a 550-pound bear live in one’s basement, unnoticed, for weeks?
some poor old man never goes in his basement, and has probably lost his sense of smell.
I once had a skunk move into my bulkhead. It ended badly for me and the skunk.

My first Tebow experience: slow delivery, holds onto the ball way too long at some really inopportune times (like his own end zone), but more accurate than I expected, delivered some nice passes at various points. Mostly just let down by defense, and some special teams errors.
/assumes nothing else happened this weekend

Remember when Josh Howard was a real nice player a few years ago?
I remember the interview where he made it perfectly clear that he didn’t give a fuck, as long as he got his money.
He’s really never recovered from calling that timeout in the finals.

If the Colts can vacillate between Curtis Painter and Dan “All He Does is Win Football Games” Orlovsky, then the Bears are free to have a QB controversy of their own.

That loss is going to hurt down the road, big time. I went to the bathroom at the bar when he went down. They had the audio from the game in there and heard Nantz say Tebow came over and tapped him on the helmet so I shouted out at the urinal “He’s healed!”

December 19th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
The one thing I took away from the Pats game was how laughably bad the Pats defense is. I mean, Denver lined up and handed the ball off and ran simple running plays and the Pats had no clue what to do. Does anyone other than Pats fan think NE is a real super bowl contender? That defense is a dumpster fire.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:07 AM

That SI piece on Mike Brown was good. He went to the interview with 4 binders and made 4 DVD on the Lakers.

It’s very hit/miss. There’s a few decent articles here/there, but a large percentage is a dumpster fire.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
they had a horrific 1st quarter, but the other 75% of the game they were dominant. still holding out hope it can translate to all 4 quarters, but the defense is what it is.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
See this bothers me… first of all, you clearly only watched the first quarter. I’ve been saying (as have most Pats fans) that they have a really questionable defense. But they could still string together (hopefully) 2 wins and get to there. Superbowl “contender” is a lot different than Superbowl “favorite” and while clearly their defense lacks, they are clearly a contender to get to the game.

I’d like to thank the Colts for clinching a playoff spot for the Steelers, the Panthers for beating the Texans, and the Chargers for knocking off the Ravens.
Steelers win out for the #1 seed. Last real test should be tonight with only the Rams/Browns left afterward.
/also thankful my fantasy opponent in my $ league started Roy Helu over Reggie Bush. Onto the finals
December 19th, 2011 at 9:13 AM
The only reason it was close was because of how creative Faulkner is but you could see how the entire panel knew Zakarian’s food tasted better and that’s why he won.
Look around, plenty of bad defenses out there, especially among the top teams. That’s the only reason why I think the Pats have a snowball’s chance in the post-season. Definitely don’t think they are the favorite though.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
I couldn’t imagine being a Ravens fan and watching Flacco just stand there looking around, waiting to take a sack with that stupid look on his face. that was pathetic last night.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
They “forced” a couple fumbles, but that defense at no point in the game was dominant.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
grantland is so fucking horrible. just horrible.
stale. They should have some good news/investigative pieces in there but it’s all become pithy/snarky “look how much industry minutia I can mock”. Everygot the paycheck to do what they’ve been doing. A good news org, everybody is mildly terrified of being outdone by the others and has an editor keep wanting “more more more”. Grantland overdid the “weekly scorecard” stuff. I blame the editors. But then again, EVERYBODY is an editor on the masthead. Org Setup Fail.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
I watched the whole game and saw people wide the fuck open, but the other team has an idiot for a QB.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Houston and Denver can’t win it with those quarterbacks.
Baltimore will shit the bed vs. an average team (like Seattle, Jacksonville, or San Diego).
Pittsburgh will ride on Roethlisberger’s health, and can they beat the Ravens if they get there?
In other words, everybody has a weakness
December 19th, 2011 at 9:15 AM

December 19th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
he’s been playing all season with a pretty bad shoulder injury. it’s been limiting, but if he was on any other team with decent quality depth he’d be out and rehabbing it.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
Sit down….and let me tell you of the legend of John Skelton.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
Not the other way around? A QB who doesn’t go down easy and fast WR’s who stretch the field? The Steelers worry me a lot more than Baltimore.

December 19th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
As I said on twitter yesterday, 3 of the 4 NFC West teams are at .500 or better. It has a better record against non-division opponents than even the “vaunted” NFC East.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
no, mostly but the rams exist in that division.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Yeah, but that’s only because they get to play the NFC West.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:26 AM
Actually… every division has played 9/12 division games so far, except for both South divisions (so those records are actually pretty fair)
December 19th, 2011 at 9:27 AM
Seattle is doing really well against good teams. And their O-Line is terrible, their only good receiver is perpetually injured, and their QB is Tarvaris Jackson. That says a lot about the defense.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
I’m assuming thats a joke, because there’s no way you of all people are dumb enough to not realize that division records are always 12-12

/heh heh heh

December 19th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
They desperately need the homefield advantage, too. After they lose tonight, they won’t have any road victories of note. Of course, Flacco owns Heinz now so I guess it doesn’t matter.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
I’ll give you the Tarvaris Jackson part – they’ll be looking hard at a QB in the draft – but the other two areas have really improved. Lynch (with O-line help) is setting things up, and their best receiver this year has been Baldwin. I like where this team is heading.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
The NFC West is 17-20 outside the division.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
Rusty what’s your opinion of the Reds trade over the weekend? specifically moving Volquez?
December 19th, 2011 at 9:30 AM
None of the above is true, of course. NFC West > NFC East.
I also have a lot of trouble taking the NFC South seriously. Atlanta is not good.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
You have to admit it’s easier to get those wins against the NFC West, though.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:31 AM
Philly lost at home to a team led by John Skelton.
The Seahawks won in New York at a point when they were widely assumed to be a dumpster fire.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:32 AM
SROD – pains me to say it (as a Broncos fan), but Broncos are completely capable of choking/being exposed further, clearly Chargers can beat the Ravens, still not sold on Patriots . . . guess the Steelers would be the favorites, but it’s wide open.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:32 AM
The NFC East is going to be decided by the Redskins. The Giants inability to beat them and Dallas beating them twice.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:33 AM
Either facepalm or +1
December 19th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Take the Rams record out of that and it’s much better than that.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
Ho ho ho. The Saints are starting to look like 2009 again. I’m back on the bandwagon, at least until they lose to Atlanta next Monday.

This also explains why TBL doesn’t like him.

He’ll get it against ATL. He always lights ATL up. The games are always close because generally ATL limits NO to FGs more than NO is used to.

the decline of the middle class in Milwaukee

Well, Atlanta is most likely losing this week, putting them at 10-6 in the best case scenario. That should give you a pick in the 23-25 range.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Yep…and they’ll probably beat the Eagles on the final day when everything else has set up for Philly.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Moving Volquez was the easiest part of that trade to swallow. He’s getting expensive and has seemingly lost his control.
Overall, I thought it was a fair trade. Gave up some redundant pieces for a really awesome pitcher who has 4 years of control left.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:47 AM
Speaking of needing to beat a team with a winning record, let’s see if SF can show up for this game tonight. I’m not a believer yet.

They seem to be following the Miami Dolphin’s strategy. One that was smart about 10 years ago when the league wasn’t as pass-happy as it is now. Joe Thomas is amazing, and yet, doesn’t matter.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
SF has beaten 9-5 Detroit, 8-6 Cincy, and 7-7 NYG. I’m not particularly impressed yet.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
+1 sooty dumpster fire.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
The Browns should lose out and hope to get in the top 3. That would give them a shot at either Barkley or RGIII. Then they can add a skill guy w/ ATLs pick.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
Anything to suggest Latos might regress without the big parks? It seemed like a lot to pay, but I always overvalue prospects/potential.

Falcons – Good, but not going anywhere (9-7/10-6) for the foreseeable future
Braves – Good, not going anywhere with Liberty Media ownership
Hawks – LOL, But they’ll make the playoffs as the 5 seed

This is Mat Latos’s career Petco / non-Petco slash line (BA, OBP, SLG):
.229 .287 .348
.224 .286 .351
He was probably a little unlucky at home and a little lucky on the road. But more importantly, he’s just really damn good.

// Knocked out 2/3 of the pool with the SEA win
December 19th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
That loss last night was 100 percent on the defense. The SD punter never saw the field. That’s pathetic. The D put Flacco in a 17 point hole and the Ravens were forced to throw every down. That will result in INTs, especially when Boldin and Evans cant get open.
I knew this game would be a loss the second it appeared on the schedule, which is why the Jville/Seattle losses bothered me so much.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
This game will make or break my Christmas Eve. Either way, it’s Sam’s Winter Lager and Baileys w/ Hot Chocolate all night. The difference is happy drunk vs. angry drunk.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Except the Ravens, best defense in the league. If they can manage to force New Orleans to come to them next month, it should be fun. Otherwise they’re probably screwed though.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
So they have shitty skill guys, but at least those shitty skill guys are well protected!
December 19th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
I think you’ll see teams trade up to get Barkley is Minny has the second pick. The beauty of the rookie cap is that trades will happen more often now.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Didn’t the lose to the Ravens???
December 19th, 2011 at 9:55 AM

Exactly. The dolphins have 4 (I think) O-Lineman that were first round picks. Look how well that’s worked out for them the past 10 years.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Don’t have Sam’s up here, but I’m on board with the Winter Ale and Bailey’s.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
I’m a big Latos fan, has great strikeout ability along with solid GB%, he should do well considering the Reds defense. Grandal and Alonso are depth prospects, considering they have Votto & Mesoraco.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:56 AM
Yeah. Not sure that has anything to do with my point, though, right?

I’d venture Browns are going Blackmon early then a DE or one of those “LT not good enough to be a stud LT but will be a great RT in the pros” guys at 25, then CB at 35.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I never understood picking the “Best QB available” just because you need one. Getting a FA or waiting is better than taking Harrington/Russell/Alex Smith in a weak QB draft, because you feel you have to. Hopefully, the new cap rules will stifle that a bit. I haven’t seen much of Ponder/Gabbert/Locker, but I’m pretty sure all three of those teams would love a do-over for any of the top 3 guys available this year.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
Niners have 3….
Christmas Eve is great….I get loaded with my family and then play Madden with my brother until 3:00 am.
Christmas morning comes,I’m hungover, and we have to go to my wife’s family deal, in which a 5 year old plays with toys that make too much fucking noise. Fuck that.

Here’s an interesting look at who Penn State may be looking at. Some interesting names on the list.
-Mark Richt (not gonna happen)
-Bo Pelini (more of a possibility than most would think)
-Paul Johnson (please don’t take him away from Ga Tech…it would ruin the fun for UGA fans)
-Pat Fitzgerald (Would he turn down Mich and say yes to Penn State post Sandusky?)
-Gary Patterson (not sure he’d leave after getting TCU in the Big 12)
-Al Golden (perhaps)
-Mike Munchak (who leaves an NFL gig to become a college HC?)
December 19th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
The Lions are a terribly coached team. They make me sick. Fire Linehan and Cunningham at the end of the season. The Raiders had no business being ahead in that game. The Lions defensive line is overrated. I will give credit to Matt Stafford he did play well and overcome the DERP play calling of Scott Linehan.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
this will make the draft very interesting… at this point you’d have to think the new rules make it just as worth while to stay where you are rather than trade down or out of the first round.
December 19th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
Exactly. The dolphins have 4 (I think) O-Lineman that were first round picks. Look how well that’s worked out for them the past 10 years
Niners have 3….

December 19th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
And if they would have picked Brees over Culpepper, they’d probably have be one of the best teams in the league. So what’s your point?

There isn’t one best way to build a roster or build a draft strategy. And none of it matters if you can’t identify talent.

And if they would have picked Brees over Culpepper, they’d probably have be one of the best teams in the league. So what’s your point?
That teams should pick skill positions in the first round over O-lineman. I think my point was pretty clear.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
That the Niners are a good team that you should be impressed by. That, at worst, they have the second best defense in the league.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
unfortunately for me, christmas eve is at my parents house, with my in laws coming. since I’m driving and my wife gets to drink.

Not gonna happen. That ship has sailed lawya.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
So you were on the Vince Young, Reggie Bush >>> Mario Williams bandwagon?
No. But you all can continue thinking drafting O-linemen. Please do. Leave the Randall Cobb’s out there for the Packers to plug in and not miss a beat. Packers just plug guys into the O-line… same thing with Pittsburgh, right? It’s not a running league anymore.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
I’ve read a ton of stuff about how his contract isn’t iron clad. You have to feel for the guy, though. He’s at Miami where the NCAA boom is going to be harsh, or he sees his Alma mater finally open up, but the circumstances surrounding it are what they are.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:08 AM
OL block during passing plays, yes?
December 19th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
I think that might have caught up with them yesterday.
Regardless of what kind of a league it is, the games are still won and lost in the trenches.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
teams still need at least one elite o-lineman, those aren’t normally pulled from the undrafted FA pool.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
t’s not a running league anymore.
OL block during passing plays, yes?
No shit. Seriously though. Look at the dolphins o line. Now compare that to the Packers or Steelers O-line. Spending top 10 picks on O linemen doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have any skill guys. But if you have skill guys, you can get by with a patchwork o-line and still be a good team.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Not in Pittsburgh, they don’t.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
Aaron Rodgers is the only skill player they’ve used a first round pick on and they have one first round pick on the offensive line (which will be two someday assuming Sherrod comes back and keeps improving)…you draft what you need, there is no all-encompassing philosophy
December 19th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
Badger thinks that’s fucking retarded. You need OL and have plenty of skill guys? Fuck it. Take another skill guy. I mean, look at the Packers!!!
December 19th, 2011 at 10:12 AM
So wrong. The only reason you can use the Packers and Steelers as “evidence” of your assertion that drafting O-line in the first round is somehow bad is because those two teams have amazing quarterbacks. If they didn’t those shitty O-lines would render their offenses pretty awful.
If you asserted “having an awesome quarterback means you can get away without an great O-line” then yeah, I’m with you. But what you’re saying about the draft is bologna.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
So you’re for drafting skill players only if they’re the right skill players in hindsight?
I’m actually on board with that draft philosophy. That probably works the best, now that I think about it.
Can the Bengals get a do-over for drafting skill players like Chris Perry and Peter Warrick in the first round?
December 19th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
True.
Not true.
You draft guys you need and that will be good NFL players. And I’m more on the ‘draft good players’ bandwagon. You need skill everywhere, and all positions have importance. It’s just as stupid to say “draft all skill position players earlier and patchwork and OL together” as it is to say “forget the skill positions just draft a solid line”.
I’d think you, ATL, as a fan of the soon to be injured Aaron Rodgers, would recognize that.
The Patriots had their all-Pro RT go down and started a rookie yesterday, who took the inside guy on a blitz, leaving the RG to block no one, and an edge rusher unblocked. Here’s how that ended
December 19th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
He doesn’t strike me as a Petrino-type. They re-worked his deal based on his committment to the program. He’s be not just consistent with his intent to stay at the program through the sanctions but downright adamant. It’s hard to be shocked by anything in the sportsworld nowadays but I would have geniune jaw-drop moment if he left to go to Pedobear U.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:16 AM
Building a football team from the outside in is something Dan Snyder believes in…I’ll take the approach of those Patriot teams that were winning Super Bowls with a great quarterback, a great line and guys like David Givens and Kevin Faulk handling the football
December 19th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
are we seriously arguing the merits of drafting a stud o-lineman versus an skill players in a generic sense like all logic is the same for every team?
/tosses gas into burger king dumpster
//lights match, tosses it in.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
Yep. Drafting for “need” is a good way to get in trouble. You need lots of talent and lots of depth.
But hard to follow through with that philosophy when you have no quarterback. Takes a lot of discipline. Makes the Niners recent successes more impressive, I think.
December 19th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
They were winning because of a solid and opportunistic defense, and just enough offense.

SROD – pains me to say it (as a Broncos fan), but Broncos are completely capable of choking/being exposed further, clearly Chargers can beat the Ravens, still not sold on Patriots . . . guess the Steelers would be the favorites, but it’s wide open
I hear ya. It is completely wide open. Based on what we have seen so far, you could make a case for the Raiders holding on and winning the west…except for the breakdowns they exhibited yesterday.
