Despite an Embarrassing 45-19 Loss to the Eagles, the Jets Can Still Make the Playoffs
When the Jets’ suffered a brutal defeat in Denver on November 17th, I was confident they’d miss the playoffs. It was a depressing loss suffered in the final minute, but perhaps a necessary one – as predicted in the preseason, New York regressed in 2011, and changes are certainly necessary. Not making the playoffs would facilitate said changes.
But with two weeks left in the season, the Jets, miraculously, are still in the playoff hunt. Just like in 2009, they only receive partial credit – the Jets have defeated inferior teams (Miami, Washington, Kansas City) but more importantly, everyone else has been awful (AFC West, Tennessee, Cincinnati). Here’s where things stand:
Jets 8-6
Bengals 8-6
If both teams win out (ha!) the Jets’ hold the tiebreaker. Here are the official tiebreakers; you have to go all the way to No. 4 and “strength of victory” which sounds nebulous and very BCS. Gross. Here’s a good breakdown of “strength of victory.”
Upcoming games:
Jets vs. Giants
Jets at Dolphins
Bengals vs. Cardinals
Bengals vs. Ravens
Not sure how this favors the Jets at all. The Bengals are at home twice, face an inferior (but percolating) Cardinals team, and then close against the Ravens in a game that may mean nothing to Baltimore. The Jets’ play a Giants team with a legit shot at the playoffs, and then have to travel to Miami, which has won five of seven.
[Alternative scenario that is too long and boring to get into: Jets and Bengals don't win again this season, and the Titans, Chargers or Raiders win twice. One would steal the Wild Card.]
I’m trying not to wrap my mind around all the playoff permutations because I don’t want to be disappointed when the Jets lose to the Giants (if you care, the Jets are, mindbogglingly, 3-point favorites). The only reason to be moderately excited? The likely* 3rd and 4th seeds in the AFC are Houston and Denver/San Diego.
Um, TJ Yates? The Broncos’ offense? Norv Turner? I’d like the Jets’ chances against either of those teams in the playoffs more than their chances this weekend against the Giants.
* A lot of folks were giving me static on twitter for saying Houston would be 3rd. I guess that shows how much faith I have in TJ Yates. Is Houston a 100% lock to beat Indianapolis Thursday night? If Pittsburgh wins tonight, I’d put the Steelers as the No. 2 seed. Even with a loss, I’d still lean Baltimore or Pittsburgh.

in the long run, i wonder what missing the playoffs does to this franchise. the coach can’t call them the super bowl favorites, QB is a glaring issue, the defense is getting older and their wide outs are, arguably, terrible and unreliable.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
why? why another post on the jets? they suck balls, and no one really cares about them.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
at this point we all revel in TBL’s slow realization that Sanchize is not who he thinks he is.
it’s sort of like what it will be like with Hank Schrader slowly puts it together that Walter White is Heisenberg.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
I’m thinking it means time to rebuild. I don’t know who is more to blame on offense between the OC or Sanchez, but something has to change there.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
well, you’re right on 2 of 3
December 19th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
not to pick nits, but unless you think they will lose one of their last two games after winning tonight, there’s no way they aren’t the #1 seed due to tie breakers if they beat the ravens in overall record.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
i’d like to think you think the defense is age defying, but i’m pretty sure we disagree on QB, haha.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
What would you have them use after – (1) they have the same record, (2) didn’t play each other, (3) have the same conference record, and (4) have the same record against common opponents?
Your scenario is assuming an outright steal of the wildcard because the Jets and Bengals would be 8-8 if they didn’t win again and one of those teams would be 9-7. What do the tiebreakers look like if any or all of those teams and the Jets/Bengals all end up 9-7? Having three or four 9-7 teams tied for one or two of the wildcard spots is pretty realistic.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Agreed that the wideouts aren’t bailing out the QB anymore.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Jets are gonna get in, sadly.

i just wonder if Rex is going to appeal to the league to have someone else beat the Giants this weekend so the Jets can make the playoffs.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
They’re going to get in as the 6 seed. They’ll draw the Texans in the first round, win, and then all bets are off.
/painful reality
December 19th, 2011 at 1:04 PM
Wouldnt the Jets and Bengals only have to lose once to be even with a Titans, Chargers or Raiders who win both games?
December 19th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
the problem would be when Sanchez is too late in delivering his rock, even after the other team shows paper.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
Since we are making snowmen in hell, the Bears are still alive for playofs too.
/knows they won’t
//wants Jerry Angelo’s face eaten by a weasel
December 19th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
No, this cannot be allowed to happen.
The Jets can feel free to fold like a tent in Week 17, but I would like to see them beat the Giants. I have no illusions about the Eagles (Juan Castillo: Still the D-coordinator), but the anger of Giants fans at their own team sustained me yesterday.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
That’s my question. If one or both of Jets/Bengals go 1-1 and any of the others go 2-0, that leaves a lot of teams at 9-7.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
I can only hope though, that this leads to more camera shots of Sanchez getting shoulder massages on the sidelines, looking content.

December 19th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
The Giants are a mystery. Some weeks Super Bowl contenders. Other weeks they look like a 3-13 team. I like them to beat the Jets, unless they throw up a dog like yesterday… regardless of how the Jets play.
Bengals will likely go 1-1.
Chargers looked scary last night, but no guarantee that they continue that pace. If they do, everyone should hope they don’t get in.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
in a perfect world he’d be sitting on the bench getting a massage right next to Tomlinson riding the bike during a make or break game.

December 19th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
You might as well put them as the 1 seed. They’d be ahead of BAL/HOU and have the tiebreaker on NE with only STL and CLE left to play.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
it’s sort of like what it will be like with Hank Schrader slowly puts it together that Walter White is Heisenberg
I fervently pray that when Hank does connect the dots, instead of busting Walter, he instead demands half the meth money in return for not ratting him out to the DEA.
Also, that he repeatedly pronounces “half” like Bernie Mac in Bad Santa.
And also, nominating American Horror Story as best series but not Breaking Bad just proves how pathetic and meaningless the Golden Globes are.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
When the Jets move up in the draft to get a QB, then this will more than likely happen.

JETS, JETS, JETS….SUCK, SUCK, SUCK.
They couldn’t beat LSU in the BCS game.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:37 PM
I don’t see how that last game with Cincinnati won’t mean something to the Ravens. Even if they’re a game behind Pittsburgh going into the final week they’ll still have a shot at the division and a likely first round bye.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
Sanchez blows.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Dumbest thing of the day.
December 19th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
Offseason TBL: Jets NEED to resign Holmes to avoid hindering Sanchez’s development.
In season TBL: The WR are terrible and hindering the QBs development. We need a new OC.
Regarding the NYJ playoff chances, I’ve been telling you there is too much talent on this team for them to not get to 9-10 wins. Even with Sanchez being inconsistent. They may lose out on tie-breakers, but its a playoff caliber roster as long as they get consistency at the QB position.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:00 PM
Jets are going to be in the playoffs. Period.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:01 PM
Not gonna happen. Dolphins win in Miami in week 17. It’s a Festivus Miracle!!!!
December 19th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
settle down, Tom. Holmes was necessary. Mason was a brick. Letting Braylon Edwards walk was dumb. Plax has had his moments, but we’re 14 weeks in and I’m not sure he’s a lock to come back
December 19th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
+1 Slip n Slide for Reggie Bush
December 19th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
I must admit I’ll laugh if the team TBL thought was the worst in the league (Dolphins) derail the Jets playoff hopes.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
It’s amazing how PIT always has one of the crappiest season-ending games in Dec. They usually get 1 tough game out of the 4 games. You think the NFL would have setup a 17th week showdown against the Ravens for the division crown. Nope, they get the Brownies.
/ continues to think the NFL caters to the Stillers.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:07 PM
Have you seen Braylon this year? Come on, now. Don’t be silly. Mierda needs some real competition. Wayne Hunter needs to be liquidated.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
How can someone be necessary and at the same time be one of the biggest problems? You defend Sanchez like a dude defends a crazy girlfriend to his friends.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
I am pretty settle Jason, just pointing out the fluidity of the positions you take.
Braylon hasn’t exactly been lighting it up in SF. Letting him go and signing Plax/Mason was more about having room to try to get Nmamdi. I’d say while Mason was a terrible fit, Burress has been much better than could have been expected, especially as a RZ target. Kerley is coming along as a slot guy as well.
One thing hurting is Hunter’s poor play keeps at least an extra RB/TE in, cutting down on Sanchez’s release valve options. Also, the refusal to throw deep with any consistency. Gotta back up those safeties and punish blitzes.
Still a playoff team. Will probably win a game or two in the playoffs with Rex and that talent. Your reverse jinx will have worked.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:12 PM
If you could only see the way Sanchez is when it’s just him and TBL, you wouldn’t say such things.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
You defend Sanchez like a dude defends a crazy girlfriend to his friends.
You just don’t get him, man.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:30 PM

They lose this Saturday.

Hey now. Hey now. Don’t dream it’s over.
I’m looking forward to the Lions-Chargers matchup, indoors no less. Both offenses have talent.
Should be entertaining.

Plax has had his moments, but we’re 14 weeks in and I’m not sure he’s a lock to come back
He looked all-world against SD. Why isn’t he a red-zone target every week? Is it coverages rolled to his side? Bad play-calling by the OC?
December 19th, 2011 at 2:47 PM
talk to sanchez and figure out why he doesn’t look the way of Plax.
December 19th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Jets going down to the Giants next week, sorry Philly.
December 19th, 2011 at 3:01 PM
They couldn’t beat LSU in the BCS game
Ganja Badger would have a couple of picks, decapitate Joe McKnight on a return and reduce Sanchize to dribbling little girl tears down his GQ cheekbones.
