Maryland Football is Preparing to Hire Mike Locksley. Yes, THAT Mike Locksley.
Maryland has had an eventful 2011. They hired Randy Edsall, unveiled hideous new uniforms, went 1-10 against FBS teams, nearly sparked a mutiny, was forced to cut eight varsity sports and engendered a climate foul enough for 19 players to depart, seven since this season ended. It would have been hard to make the Terps more of a laughingstock, but, through sheer determination, the Edsall-Anderson duumvirate found a way to do it. Reports indicate Maryland has found its new offensive coordinator, Mike Locksley. Yes, that Mike Locksley.
This hiring, devoid of context, makes sense. Maryland needs help running an offense and recruiting. Locksley’s last two offenses as a coordinator for Illinois were in the top twenty. As a former Maryland assistant and a DC native he has connections throughout the state and is a renowned recruiter. Five-star offensive tackle Cyrus Kouandjio from Maryland narrowed down his final three last winter to Alabama, Auburn and New Mexico because of Locksley.
For all the positive aspects of the hiring, however, Locksley comes with ample baggage from his two and a half tumultuous seasons at New Mexico. He had more job-threatening controversies (three) than wins (two). He embroiled the university in an age discrimination and sexual harassment suit. He was suspended for a game without pay for punching an assistant coach in the face. He was fired after an underage kid claiming to be a recruit was stopped for DWI in his car. He also maintains the stain from losing 26 of 28 games in charge. For a university purportedly made squeamish by Mike Leach’s baggage, this hiring is astounding.
P.S. For those assuming 18-year-olds love the uniforms, Maryland currently has Rivals’ 12th ranked recruiting class in the ACC, out of 12 teams. This is their lowest place, since Rivals started ranking in 2002. Their second worst was last year’s 9th place finish. The Terps will land just one of the top 13 recruits in Maryland this year.
Come to Maryland: Where you can not talk to the media, not have a name on the back of your jersey, look like a jackass and get to spend some intimate moments with Captain Bligh!
Four-star kids will be flocking.

Locksley > Gary Crowton
Crowton had all the offensive talent that Kragthorpe and Studrawa inherited and scored 40 a game with. All Crowton did with was it was run options to the short side of the field.

OSU hired Eugene Withers. That’s way more topical and relevant than this shit bag and shit program.

Once again, interview skills get a guy a job for which he appears to be unsuited.
Go Terps?

Good thing they didn’t hire Mike Leach – their reputation would have been shot.

Craig James thinks this is a swell hire and can’t wait to speak in favor of it during his many bowl appearances.

If you want to cry for more Ohio State coverage at least get the coaches name right.

Damn – gotta read more closely – this is beyond astounding, though. Kind of reinforces the point about Malzhan’s wife – if they think you can help them win, there’s no such thing as too toxic.

Craig James thinks it’s such a great hire, he’s going to ask Mike Locksley to be his campaign manager.

18 year olds do love the uniforms though, and to say otherwise is naive. They do not, however, like losing football games.

Probably has more to do with the staff and not the unis.

I think it’s a wonderful decision for a school to have its colors and traditions dictated by the whims of 18 year old kids. Seems very logical.

Oregon can’t hear you over the all the cha-chinging from 3 straight BCS bowls.

Alabama. Texas. Auburn. Georgia. LSU. Ok, maybe the last two aren’t the best examples, but you recruit a kid to play for the school and have a chance of success at the next level. If you entertain their sartorial whims, you are saying that they are more important than the school itself and it’s traditions.

Hey Vlad, most OSU fans don’t even give a shit who the assistant coaches are.

was the chic from up top at the Jets game too? Those KC fans f’d her face up too…

Which isn’t a problem at schools like Maryland and Oregon, as they have no tradition.

Touché.
The uniforms are still stupid.

Wrong name …. and yeah, hiring random defensive assistants (not even a coordinator) is much more topical. He going to teach Braxton how to complete forward passes?

I guess when you’ve had the success that Edsall’s had at Maryland, you can do whatever you want.
December 16th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
That is not Andersons fault. I will not argue that Anderson has made a bunch of mistakes and the Edsall regime is not well liked among the fanbase. Those sports were cut because of the excessive spending of the previous regime on non-revenue producing sports which placed a heavy debt load on the athletic department.
Everything else that you want to blame on Anderson please do. But those seven sports being cut are not on him at all.
December 16th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Fucking shit.
But yeah, I blame Anderson for a few things, but the sport cuts are on Debbie Yow, not him. Plus, he brought in Turgeon, who I love.
