Todd Graham Leaves Pitt For Arizona State, His Fourth School Since 2006.
Todd Graham is a climber and, for the second time in his coaching career, has left a school for a better job after just one season. Hired at Pitt on January 10, Graham is moving to Arizona State, his fourth head coaching position since 2006. Graham’s rise from Texas high schools to West Virginia to Tulsa to Rice to Tulsa to Pitt and now to Arizona State since 2000 has been meteoric. Ignore the kids left in his wake.
For Arizona State: It’s not an awful choice, assuming he plans to settle down. ASU had broken off negotiations with Sumlin. They pulled back from a seemingly done deal with June Jones because of booster pressure. They did not seem willing to consider coordinator candidates, such as Tennessee DC Justin Wilcox. AD Lisa Love was in the weeds. The Sun Devils got a coach, who runs a high-tempo spread offense that can work in the Pac 12 and who has a reasonable track record of success. It’s a poor man’s version of the Rodriguez or Leach hire they should have made.
For Graham: ASU is a better job. It’s easier to recruit there. The weather’s better. He will get paid more. He would have had to rebuild his staff anyway after Rich Rodriguez raided it. He can explain to recruits why he has pulled a Lane Kiffin, twice.
For Pittsburgh: You had the chance in 2004. You had the chance twice in 2010. You now have another chance in 2011. Hire Tom Bradley.
Here’s the reported text message he sent his players.
“I have resigned my position at Pitt in the best interest of my family to pursue the head coaching position at Arizona State,” Graham said. “Coaching there has always been a dream of ours and we have family there. The timing of the circumstances have prohibited from telling you this directly. I now am on my way to Tempe to continue those discussions. God Bless. Coach Graham.”

Seriously – this would probably be the best move for both parties. Though I’d love to keep Scrap at PSU.

FACT, but both guys can coach. Todd Graham made Rice relevant in C-USA. Rice, for Christ’s sake.

It was his “dream” to coach at ASU? Really? REALLY?????

yeah, I’m sure he dreamed of coaching at ASU just like Randy Edsel dreamed of coaching at Maryland.

That thing was all over the place…I understand the text message is bad form, but if he was flying out to sign some paperwork, what should he do? Just tell his new employer he’ll be out the following day? Shit is too fluid.

who was that guy in here defending the way Petrino left the Falcons? I think his defense was that “we don’t have the full story”. Remember that? That was awesome.

Ignore the kids left in his wake.
let’s hop off the horse. you can say this with any coach who leaves

Dude wants to run through the hottest co-eds in the country. Good for him landing a gig that lets that happen.

But will the media reaction towards Graham be the same as it was towards Kiffin?
December 14th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
I actually went to the Pitt/Cuse game 2 weeks ago. It was so dead silent and lifeless in Heinz Field. 95% of the upper sections were empty. Me and all of my buddies left 15 minutes after sitting down and tailgated until 4. I think we made the right decision.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
Nobody cares about this stuff after 24 hrs. Kiffin heard it and does anyone ever mention it now? Same with Petrino. And Saban. Etc etc.
And hire Bradley? The last thing Pitt needs is to become intangled in the PSU mess.

Kiffin got bad press because he committed violations every time he opened his mouth and because is dick recruiting moves didn’t sit well with other coaches in the SEC.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
I can’t blame him for getting out of there.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Did the ASU AD actually watch any Pitt games this year? Maybe the ‘stache left things worse than I realized, but it wasn’t pretty.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
When has he proven he will? I think this is a terrible choice by ASU. But it does move the PAC 12 into complete defense optional territory. Leach, Graham, RichRod, Kelly, Kiffin, Sarkisian, Tedford. Goodness. Those late saturday games are going to be fun next year.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Kiffin went from Tennessee to one of the best jobs in the nation. Can’t blame him for leaving for USC. Graham has left for other jobs everywhere he’s gone. He deserves more shit than Kiffin.

As badly as Lisa Love fucked up the entire process I am delightfully surprised by this. Now please fire Lisa Love.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
wow. this is not good.
time to fire love.

You don’t live in Tennessee

That movie is going to destroy the box office. Brianna Banks will have sympathy for how bad that box will be destroyed.
/if I knew who that was of course
December 14th, 2011 at 1:55 PM
At least Lane had Layla – if Mrs. Graham looks anything like that, Graham is an over-achiever of the highest order.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:05 PM
it was me, and as awesome as it was, it is more awesome that it all started with the Falcons drafting Jamaal Anderson, but no one wants to acknowledge that.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
I think he got sick of watching Tino Sunseri. I actually chose Pitt over ASU (basically were my final two choices), and Tyler Palko made me regret that choice a few times….

Is that the chick with the glasses who had a hit song in the mid-90′s?
December 14th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
So this should change the BBVA Compass Bowl line just a tad I would think.

At least the campus is sweet. Sun Devil Stadium is pretty scenic.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:59 PM
Karsten Golf Course is pretty cool too. Pittsburgh or Tempe??? I don’t think that would take very long to decide.
December 14th, 2011 at 5:13 PM
Saying ASU is a better program than Pitt is just stupid. Pitt has better facilities, better local recruiting area, and more success in their history. The only thing that ASU has is hot girls. They have won three Pac 10 titles since 1978!!
Also, there’s a reason why Pitt or anybody else doesn’t want Bradley. He is part of the Penn State cover up.
Come on, man, wake the hell up.
December 14th, 2011 at 5:14 PM
You’re right. It wouldn’t take long to decide. I’d choose Pittsburgh. Who wants to live where it’s 120 degrees?
December 14th, 2011 at 5:53 PM
It’s easier to recruit at ASU? Isn’t Shittsburgh, and the State of PA for that matter, supposed to be some sort of Talent rich state? The best Arizona guys go to SC, UCLA or Texas.
The Weather is better? They both have miserable weather. Arizona heat sucks balls. Open the front door and you get punched in the face with a 120 Degree fist.
