The Browns Never Gave Colt McCoy a Concussion Test After James Harrison Knocked Him Out
Cleveland Browns’ GM Mike Holmgren met with the media this morning and dropped a bomb: Thursday, after QB Colt McCoy absorbed a helmet-to-helmet hit from James Harrison of the Steelers, the Browns never tested him for a concussion.
Ooops.
Holmgren said the doctors and trainers didn’t “see” the hit because they were tending to another player who went down. Really? They’re not watching a 7-3 game in the 4th quarter? What about all the coaches upstairs who help alert the team when to throw a challenge flag? They didn’t see the hit or replays on the NFL Network, either? Their excuse: The doctors were down there, they must have known McCoy was nearly decapitated.
I expect the Browns to be looking for a new head trainer in the offseason.
What a complete embarrassment by the organization. Colt McCoy’s dad was right to rip the Browns. If they finish with a top five draft pick and it looks like they’re going to target Matt Barkley, the USC QB, wouldn’t you rather stay in school than go to play for that franchise?

Browns deserve to lose more money than Harrison over this.
Harrison should watch NFL Films during his time off and learn nothing from his punishment.
December 14th, 2011 at 1:58 PM
Why would you admit this?
December 14th, 2011 at 1:59 PM
They’re fucking doctors, not fans.

Spencer must have taught you to avoid Browns bashing in his Hyperbole 301 course. You’ll probably be docked for this.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:02 PM
Simple solution: fine the hell out of the owner, the head coach, the doctors, pretty much everyone involved. Make sure this doesn’t happen again.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:03 PM
Who mentioned nurses?
December 14th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Even if the trainers didn’t see the hit, McCoy was pulled out of the game. They should have gone over there and said “Hey Colt, we didn’t see what happened. What hurts?”
When his answer is “Potato salad” you take away his helmet.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:04 PM
Another embarrasment in the long line of embarrasments since 1999. What’s the chance we can get them to move away again? 3rd time is the charm.

Let’s say the doctors did not see the hit shouldn’t someone on the coaching staff tell them? “OI Dr. Quinn our quarterback just got 90′s NFL Blitzed to the face you should probably ask him 10 questions.”

December 14th, 2011 at 2:11 PM
Serious question no one could answer in the office – if, while scrambling, McCoy passes the line of scrimmage, illegally throws the pass, and then gets hit like this, is it still a penalty for an illegal hit to the passer/QB? Or is he by definition a runner once he passes the line of scrimmage and no longer has the ‘protection’ of a QB?
December 14th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
To your point Babar, Holmgren said
Seems like they took him out spoke with him and didn’t think there were symptoms of a concussion (or it wasn’t necessary to perform the test). He also said the symptoms came on later, well after the game. So, I don’t what to think here; they said the med staff was working on other players and they heard the crown reaction but not the specific play
December 14th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
I say he’s still a passer. If a player fair catches a punt then runs, it’s a penalty on him, but you’d still get 15 for blowing him up.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:13 PM
…When his answer is “Potato salad” you take away his helmet…
Dang, that’s funny.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Why is it out of the realm of possibility that that trainers were working on other guys? (they had 2 other concussions..and Cribbs and Hall were being tended to as well).
December 14th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
head coach too? please?!?!?!
just when mangini was getting the team to actually, you know, GET BETTER…right back to country club crennel and an owner/president who’s straight up missing in action.
i never thought id lose passion and my love for the browns, and yet…
December 14th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
After that hit, thisis the only concussion test you needed to give McCoy.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:17 PM
Based on the Cleveland-trained doctors I know, it was probably better for McCoy that they were pre-occupied anyway.

Hospitals can use this excuse too, right? Sorry Mr. Gunshot victim, we have too many cases of chicken pox and food poisoning to help you. But hang in there!

December 14th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
I know… I’m biased against them for more personal reasons, much like UNC, though I really have met a surprisingly large number of crappy doctors and douchebag med students who went to CWRU or trained at CC. At least they didn’t give someone the wrong heart!
/Duke
December 14th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
wtf? this is “sorry mr. gunshot victim, we have other gunshot victims that were here first.”
if anything…shurmur’s the one to blame. he shouild be publicly executed.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
Why does it matter if they were? Somebody needs to inform them of what happened. You’re telling me that of the couple hundred people on the sideline, there isn’t one person who’s sole job is to watch the quarterback? Hire me. I’ll work for a game ticket every Sunday.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:23 PM
Or busy with the lady that came through our ER with her kid, who had no insurance or car, so when she ran out of tylenol, she called 9-1-1 to get an ambulance ride to the hospital because it was cheaper than calling a taxi and going to the store.

December 14th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
Well technically yes hospital EDs typically will triage if they are experiencing high census or low staffing but it would be more like sorry mr chicken pox victim we have too many gun shot victims to help you. But hang in there!

you were being a whiny bitch assface, that’s what you were being.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
So doctors have to see a hit before a player can be administered a concussion test? What’s the point of having 10+ assistant coaches if none of them can be trusted to recognize when a player has his “bell rung”, as it used to be called. Seems like an extra assistant should be added to these already bloated staffs to handle clock management and concussion symptoms respectively.
What happened with Kris Dielman earlier this year was even more of a disgrace. A 320+ pound lineman is wobbling around on the field yet is allowed to fly back across the country that same night.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
Or busy with the lady that came through our ER with her kid, who had no insurance or car, so when she ran out of tylenol, she called 9-1-1 to get an ambulance ride to the hospital because it was cheaper than calling a taxi and going to the store.
This just tells me that ambulance rides are way too cheap.

Well the one thing everybody has been consistent about is that Colt looked fine. Literally the players and the staff have all said that (including right after the game..so it wasn’t like they were trying to get their stories straight). Even under the NFL rules, they didn’t have to administer the Scat2 Test…Even DaMaurice Smith said as much after reps met with the team.

Are we sure the Browns are done with Colt McCoy yet? If they keep Pat Shurmur, I think that means they keep Colt McCoy and try to draft (or sign) some offensive skill players to put around him.

I’ve got two unused REI backpacks from the wedding (gifts) that beg to differ. My wife has been training for a marathon, so we didn’t do any nice trip this year. I do have a fantastic story about taking her on a whitewater open canoe camping trip when we had been dating for a few months, and the float had a hole in it, and we capsized the canoe on a class iii-iv rapid, and took a nice whitewater swim from TN to KY in late October.

late to the discussion, but if the NFL won’t provide the independant nuerologists for concussion evaluation they can’t fine the team for their actions, no matter how careless they were.

That’s the plan right now. Granted we have not started to pay for it yet, but the last two weddings we went to had that. My fiancee’s parents have some connections in the San Antonio so we’re paying quite a bit less for some things than other people would. So that’s why a full open bar is feasible.
