Gus Malzahn Leaves Auburn For Arkansas State: Surprising, But Not Necessarily a Bad Move.
Gus Malzahn will leave his post as Auburn’s offensive coordinator to assume the head coach position at ASU, Arkansas State University. He will stay at Auburn through the bowl game. Fresh off a Broyles award 12 months ago, Malzahn eschewed interest from Maryland and Vanderbilt, waiting for just the right BCS job to open for him. Today, he’s leaving for Arkansas State, a team that had not won seven games in FBS since rejoining in 1991 before last season. He’s also accepting a substantial pay cut, from $1.3 million to $850,000 per year. The move seems like a head-scratcher, but, looking closer, it may not be that bizarre.
Had Malzahn’s stock fallen that far? That’s plausible. A decline without Newton was expected, but not a cataclysmic one. Auburn’s offense declined from 7.4 yards per play in 2010 (3rd) to 5.14 yards per play in 2011 (84th). If you’re a less sophisticated AD looking at total yardage, that’s 499.2 per game (7th) to 328.2 per game (104th). One bad year does not kill a stellar resume, but it would alleviate the tumescence enough for interviewers to question his lack of head coaching experience.
Malzahn could just be a poor interviewer. His wife’s video, mysteriously removed from the Internet, might have hurt his candidacy. Whatever the reason, he was not getting jobs he thinks he should have landed. Arkansas State may have been his best offer, and taking that job may put him in a better position than staying at Auburn.
Reports suggest unhappiness was a factor in Malzahn’s departure. We’ll assume he was not homesick. His offense is predicated on a “fast and furious” no huddle pace. Like Chip Kelly’s system at Oregon, he wants to run plays as quickly as possible to exhaust opponents and keep them off balance. Without a Cam Newton, that pace becomes critical.
Malzahn’s stated goal is to run 80 plays per game. Auburn eclipsed 65 plays four times in 12 games, compared to nine times in 14 in 2010. In those five games, two were slugfests (Alabama and Clemson) and three were games the offense was just running efficiently (179 points combined). Whether it was personnel, inexperience or shielding an atrocious defense, Auburn was not running his offense this season. Undoubtedly, that was frustrating. It was also making him look bad.
Arkansas State is neither Maryland nor Vanderbilt, but if it was his best option that may not be a bad move. He could exploit his Arkansas high school connections, win quickly in Jonesboro and be in discussion for a solid BCS job as soon as next winter. (It worked for Hugh Freeze). He might win quicker than he would have at Kansas and with far less media pressure.
An interesting question is what happens at Auburn. In less than a year, Gene Chizik has gone from BCS title winner to jettisoning both his coordinators. You can’t wholly discredit his undefeated season. Falloff this year was inevitable given the roster turnover, and he actually hit the over on wins. Still, without Cam Newton, Chizik is 13-10 against FBS teams (17-29 total) and 7-9 in the SEC. He’s not beyond proving himself as a head coach.
Without Gus Malzahn involved we’re in for some pure, unadulterated Chizik. If the new coordinator hires don’t go well, it’s not inconceivable he and his sweet leather jacket could be looking for another job in a few years.

Gus must know that the NCAA Hammer is coming since ESPN won’t protect em like they protect Bama.

Anyone else think maybe he just saw “ASU” and accepted, thinking he was going to Tempe?

This has more to do with Gus and Gene simply disliking one another and differing philosophically. Trust me, I’d love to see the Plains burned to the ground, but that isn’t happening. Should be interesting to see who Gene goes after. Someone said they thought they would go to a more pro-style set, but that makes little sense to me. I do know that this really helps UGAs recruiting class this year, so I’m thrilled. The fact that he told Vandy no thanks and a year later he takes $2 million less to coach in the Sun Belt tells me he really regrets saying no to Vandy.
Auburn fans think Mark Stoops is going to leave Free Shoe to be the DC, but that would be a bit a shocker to me. It’d be a helluva hire, though. Gene hit the lottery when he landed Cam to go along with a stout OL and Malzahn running the plays. Can he catch lighting in a bottle again?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
I dont know, living in Bumfuck Alabama probably was hard for someone used to the urban sophistication of Bumfuck ArKansas.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
Vandy and Maryland are not places you necessarily want to “pad” a resume. Malzahn is no Franklin.
Getting HC experience will be easier at ASU and that’s what he needs most.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
At this point it would be a surprise if Stoops did not take the Auburn job IMHO. This is in part because Auburn is willing to throw a lot of money at him now they are not spending it on Malzahn.
Suggestions from the players at practice, with Chizik actually running things, is that they are hitting hard and playing more physically than they did under DC Ted Roof.
I think Auburn’s recruiting will be fine.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
I guess it is a slight possibly, as he started coaching H.S. over in that part of the state. that being said, that part of the state sucks except for duck hunting, so I doubt he missed it all that much.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
Of course it will be fine, but Malzahn was specifically in charge of a couple of kids that were down to UGA and Auburn. Georgia woke up happy this morning as far as recruiting goes.
WTF? You think it’s a better move for Gus to take over ARK ST than to take the job at Maryland or Vandy?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
I said the same thing in the roundup, I honestly believe this factored into at least a little bit.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Gus realized he would never get another Cam Newton at Auburn again.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Take over the Sun Belt champs, and you get to feast on shitty competition. Troy is down. Schnellenberger is gone. Cristobal may soon be gone. He can get 9-10 over there farily easily.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
it may not be a better move for everyone, but think about it. you go to Vandy or Maryland and get shit-stomped for a couple years by your conference opponents and you are gone. at ASU it is a million times easier to win your conference and get noticed for something other than getting stomped by V. Tech or Alabama.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:37 AM
WTF? You think it’s a better move for Gus to take over ARK ST than to take the job at Maryland or Vandy?
Ark State is in a better place right now, relatively speaking, than Maryland is. I know you mean a school “like Maryland”, but nonetheless, going to Ark State puts him in a position to succeed right away and get experience running the entire program. He’ll probably be there 2-4 years and then, if he’s successful, the really big name programs will come calling.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
I do. He can go to the Sun Belt and dominate (although I am of the opinion that Willie Taggart @WKU is going to be the one doing the dominating), as opposed to a destined-to-fail spot like Vandy.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
On one hand, Franklin making Vandy mediocre has led to people calling him a miracle worker. On the other, he will be lucky to win 8 games there. There is precedent for taking Vandy to mediocre and getting a better gig – Gerry Dinardo.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Franlin went 6-6 at Vandy and is seen as a god in Nashville and elsewhere. Maryland was coming off of an 8-4 year and had a young QB. If Malzahn is a good coach, he would have done well at either spot, plus he’d be making far more cash.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
A minority coach performing miracles in the Sun Belt? One more year, tops, before somebody calls him up.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Well written, Duffy.
I like the move. I think there were some schematic clashes between Chizik and Gus as far as playcalling/pace but I think it was clear that Gus’ offense had an expiration date in the SEC anyway. In ’09 it was innovative. In ’10 it was all Cam. And in ’11, with similar personnel to what we had in ’09, we could do nothing – NOTHING – against stellar defenses.
As for the future, I’m optimistic. By all accounts, we had an awful schedule this year. It won’t be as tough next season. Our freshmen/sophomore heavy lineups will have one more year of experience, and I think Chizik will hire someone capable of cultivating the talent we already have, and keeping the talent that has already committed to come to Auburn next year.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Getting HC experience will be easier at ASU and that’s what he needs most.
idk. everything is in a much smaller and less intense scale (fans, media), fewer prima donna athletes to manage. organizationally and managing a staff, sure, but is HC experience at a small school no one cares about great prep for a BCS type job?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Exactly, though. The expectations at Vandy are so low, that if you meet them, you’ll get a better gig. Malzahn must win 10 games a year now or people will think he’s failed due to Freeze winning 10. If Malzahn went 6-6 twice at Vandy he’d be the coach of a much bigger school.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Franlin went 6-6 at Vandy and is seen as a god in Nashville and elsewhere. Maryland was coming off of an 8-4 year and had a young QB. If Malzahn is a good coach, he would have done well at either spot, plus he’d be making far more cash.
If he falls on his face at Maryland though, people will question his legitimacy as a coach. He can toil in the smaller limelight of Ark State, which is in a position to continue to be successful. If he dominates there, he looks like a genius. Urban Meyer coached at Bowling Green and Utah before going to Florida. I’d say that worked out pretty well. There’s something to be said for the gradual approach. Clearly Malzahn knows there’s a few things he needs to learn still about being a college level coach.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Dude…in 2009 you still had a really good OL. AUB had garbage for talent this year. No OC was winning more than 7 games. Ala, LSU, Ark, Clem and UGA were head and shoulders better.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
I thought that before the Malzahn hiring, not so much anymore.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
why would it not be? it’s pretty much what every successful coach has done. plus a whole lot better than jumping in head first and getting fired after a couple years like Turner Gill. sure, there is a small chance you jump in and have success immediately, but the chances of that are pretty slim, especially at a place like Vandy or Maryland.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Adding on – it baffles me that Gus’ offense never really evolved. I’ve watched every snap of every AU game the last 3 seasons and the predictability and simplicity of the offense, once you get beyond the overwhelming motion, was stunning.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
What if he goes 8-4? Freeze went 10-2, right? The expectations are set that Gus needs to win 9-10 games a year now. I don’t know shit about ARK ST, but are they built to win 9-10 games for the next couple of years?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
The Astros just ripped off the Red Sox. Big time.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
what’s the record for going from podunk to spotlight with one move? erickson from wazoo to miami in 91?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
maybe, but Freeze was also only there for a year, so if Malzahn comes in and wins 9 or 10 next year who says the same thing can’t happen?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
How so?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
True, but Freeze went to Ole Miss. I think Maryland is a better gig than Ole Miss.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
it’s pretty much what every successful coach has done.
i can only assume you know a lot more than me (serious, not sarcastic), but it seems like guys jump from OC/DC at a big school to a big school HC job pretty often
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Interesting. They play at Oregon to open the season. That could be fun even though Oregon will kill them. How many plays are going to be run for each side?
They also play at Nebraska.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Jose…you are my 2nd favorite Hilltopper fan, so I’ll tell you the same thing I told my favorite one last night…Taggart is/will be twice the HC Malzahn will be. Fear not.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
They’re gonna start singing along to “Sweet Caroline” during the stretch.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I’d like to thank Malzahn for leaving now, though. Hopefully this means Avery Young will sign with UGA to go along with John Theus. UGA needs all of the OL help they can get.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
No team in the Sun Belt will consistently do that, mainly because 3 of their 4 OOC games are usually money grabs. To go 10-2, you need to go unbeaten and hope you can schedule a team like Memphis that you can beat.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
LOL
December 14th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Well, that’s true. I think with the ’09 offensive line, we would have competed more this year, obviously, but per my second comment, I think the surprise element is what makes Gus’ offense effective. And it simply wasn’t going to work long term.
Plus, we’re in complete transition now. I’m fine with it. Gus was going to be at the top of most open head coaching positions anyway and would have taken one eventually. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chizik told Gus – if you get a job, take it.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:50 AM

I don’t disagree but you could say the same thing about a move to a school like Maryland. Either path has its merits and its risks. So there’s not really a ‘wrong’ choice here. This is a calculated move on his part which I think will work out for him. We’ve seen what happens when a coach is moved up too quickly without the experience of running a larger program: Turner Gill, already mentioned, and spencer’s boy Todd Dodge, both embarrassed themselves by doing so.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
Instead of overpaying for saves (Papelbon) they lopsided traded for saves (Melancon).

I can’t imagine changing coordinators would have too much of an effect on offensive linemen. I think we’re selling our OL recruits on the fact that our line sucks and they could play immediately.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:51 AM

Link please.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I don’t think it’s going to matter how many games Malzahn wins (within reason). I think his success will be judged by how well his offense performs, especially in top OOC games.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I wouldn’t call wazu podunk…they are a BCS conference, after all. Far more of a better example would be Tressel, from a 1-AA program to Ohio State.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Gus was selling Young hard on his system being perfect for him. He was leading the charge to sign him. It helps UGA out a lot. Doesn’t guarantee anything, but it certainly helps.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Auburn will be fine as long as Trooper is still giving out his patented handshakes.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
So true. Dude has to be one of the shadiest recruiters out there. I remember Tenn fans hoping he’d leave before he got them into trouble.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Ehh, truth is I don’t follow recruiting that much until January. We’ll have a top-10 class one way or the other. Somebody started a fake Malzahn twitter account and was tweeting all of our recruits to go to Bama.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
You got Lawrie and big right hander under control until 2016 for a “closer”.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
sadly, I think you are correct. ole piss is a fucking train wreck. along the same lines though, I bet it will be easier to build a program there rather than Maryland. at least ole piss has some semblance of tradition.

Love this stuff. One of the shadiest recruiters out there based on message board posts from 6 years ago.
Reminds me. One of my wealthy friends tells the story of being on another one of our acquaintances jet going to see the Horns play down in Austin. Dude that owned the jet had a briefcase full of money and was bragging about passing cash to a recruit he didn’t name.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Looks like DeRuyter might be taking over at Fresno St.
That’s probably the best example. Derek Dooley also comes to mind.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Of course they will. Every SEC team worth a damn does, but UGA needs to sign OL and they already have Theus. If they get Young (who is probably a red shirt guy, to be honest) it sets them up very well for the future. Theus will need to play well next year for UGA to win big, something that worries me as true freshman OL rarely dominate.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
Lowrie. Lawrie plays for the Blue Jays. As much as I liked Jed, he just couldn’t stay healthy. No chance Melancon closes for Boston.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
this is something I think we can all agree on. Ritty, what do Auburn people think of him?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I’m surprised that Houston (apparently) didn’t show any interest.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Bard is in the rotation. Who the hell else is closing for Boston? Larry Lucchino?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
It’s okay to admit he’s shady. That’s what Tenn fans did. They accepted his services as he landed the studs, but they knew he was dirty.
December 14th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Dr.Tom, interested in a name-change bet for the Cap One Bowl?
December 14th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Trooper is an interesting phenomenon. If he wore his hat like most people and was white, he’d be considered a dynamic young recruiter, not a crook.
I’m not worried about Auburn’s OL recruiting.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
They think he’s squeaky clean. They cannot admit/accept he’s shady. Not sure why, but they can’t.

December 14th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I think he’s like a father figure to the players. I have never heard his name connected with anything legitimately shady…what he did at Tennessee doesn’t concern me. Chizik runs a tight ship and we don’t cheat. Therefore, I’m fine with Trooper.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
And why didn’t I get this offer?
/probably because I think SC rolls
Not likely. Though I think his towel waving is the most egregious thing he does. I can handle the hand$hakes, but the towel thing is just obnoxious.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:02 PM

Nice. Jeff Luhnow spreading his wings already.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Awesome.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
Like I said I have no more reason to believe he’s shady than to believe that Mark Richt is actually Helen Hunt wearing a man wig. I will never believe Trooper is shady until an accusation is proven. And I will never believe Mark Richt isn’t Helen Hunt until I’m able to tug the wig off.

No idea. I limit my comments to his time at Auburn. If he was shady before, I consider him reformed until he is accused of something at Auburn and it is proven to be true. This is my duty. Well you cant even spell the dude’s name right so I doubt you realize he spends 90% of games on the DL. I’m still waiting for them to get their closer though, this isnt the last move they’ll make.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Mark Melancon pitched in an enormous park, one inning a game, for a terrible team. Good luck in the AL East with him. As for Lowrie, he does get hurt a bit but considering the rest of your infield can’t stay healthy either, it’s nice to have that utility guy that can place 3 positions. You don’t have that luxury anymore, at least not for as cheap as Lowrie came.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Iglesias will fill that position, actually.
December 14th, 2011 at 12:52 PM

December 14th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
Just because a job is in a BCS conf doesn’t mean it is worth taking. Kansas is terrible. Illinois is terrible. Kentucky is bad. Maybe he wins big at Ark St and gets an actual desirable BCS gig in a few yrs.
December 14th, 2011 at 2:08 PM
Germantown might hang 50 on the Tiggers . . . of course, they’d have shut out the Vols this year.
