Chris Paul Traded (Finally) to the Clippers for Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-farouq Aminu and a Draft Pick
Chris Paul and Blake Griffin? Yup, I’m excited.
Chris Paul was finally traded, and he’s going to the Clippers in exchange for three players and a future draft pick. Here’s what was just swapped:
New Orleans gets:
Eric Gordon
Chris Kaman
Al-farouq Aminu
2012 1st round draft pick (Minnesota’s)
LA Clippers get:
Chris Paul
2 future 2nd round draft picks.
One would assume this automatically vaults the Clippers into the playoffs in the West, perhaps in the 4-5-6 range.
Here’s what the Clippers starting lineup might look like:
PG – Chris Paul
SG – Randy Foye/Mo Williams
SF – Caron Butler
PF – Blake Griffin
C – DeAndre Jordan
The bench is quite thin – Eric Bledsoe and Ryan Gomes lead the way. I’d assume Chauncey Billups, whom they just picked up, will be waived. Why keep three point guards?
If you’re a Hornets fan, this isn’t a terrible deal (though I would have rather had Bledsoe than Gordon). I would assume Kaman gets dealt near the trade deadline, the Hornets win about 15-20 games, and New Orleans picks up two top 15 draft picks. The key to this deal is how bad (or good) Minnesota is. If the Wolves are awful, and the Hornets are awful, New Orleans could have two of the top five picks in a really, really good draft.
The reason I’d rather have Bledsoe than Gordon? Two summers from now, it is very likely Eric Gordon will be a free agent. They could have had Bledsoe longer.

Billips isn’t getting waived. I bet Mo Williams gets traded or amnestied. Clips probably have another trade in them. Bledsoe has more value as a trade chip than as a backup to Paul.

Good deal for my beloved hornets. I’ll take it. I’m just not sure how the already shitty NOLA fanbase will support this team until it becomes good again. And Fuck Todd Graham.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:25 PM
Can’t believe they let Gordon go. With an outside shooter that team is deadly, now they’ll be exciting but ultimately pointless as I don’t think this makes them championship caliber.
Seriously how many open 3′s would Gordon knock down with CP penetrating and people collapsing on on Griffin? That offense would be frightening
December 14th, 2011 at 8:27 PM
Kaman for Charlie V!
December 14th, 2011 at 8:27 PM
Clippers might be a 6th seed at best in the west, but goddamn they will be fun to watch with CP3 and Griffin together. I approve.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:28 PM
Todd Graham is as trustworthy as a dingo in a nursery. I do not know why a school would hire him at this point.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:29 PM
I wish David Stern bought the Pistons so he would block the Charlie V signing in 2009.

Todd Graham is as trustworthy as a dingo in a nursery. I do not know why a school would hire him at this point.
Yeah not sure what ASU is thinking but whatever.
I’m going to miss CP3 but I blame NOLA more for failing miserably at surrounding him with a team.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:40 PM
Billups would be an awesome spot-up 2 guard in that offense…couldn’t play them together for too many minutes a game for defensive reasons, but no reason he couldn’t be as effective as when Terry or Kidd play off the ball for the Mavs.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:42 PM
Great trade. Chris Paul’s knee is a concern but he is a once in a generation point guard. Even if his knee bursts into thousand different pieces during a game, the risk is well worth it. Lakers are worse. Portland are worse. Dallas are year older and less formidable defensively. Why cant the clippers be a top 4 seed? As a great man once said, “why cant us”?

I’m going to miss CP3 but I blame cheap-ass skirt-chaser George Shinn more for failing miserably at surrounding him with a team

And this is better than getting Odom, Scola, Kevin Martin and picks how?
December 14th, 2011 at 8:53 PM
Have fun with Slick Rick Pitt.

Ballz – Cheaper. Younger. Draft pick.
Plus, with the quartet you named, they’d be battling for the 7th/8th playoff spot. no high draft pick.
this way is better. sometimes, you have to gut and start over
December 14th, 2011 at 8:56 PM
I thought the same thing. They got an ok guard, shitty big man, and a role player.
December 14th, 2011 at 8:59 PM
Coop: Gordon > Martin all day every day.
Younger. Cheaper. Probably a wash when it comes to scoring.
Kaman/Scola: One guy is an expiring contract; the other is 32 who would be on the books for 4 more years.
Odom > Aminu, but one guy is young and looking for that next deal. the other guy would definitely complain for two years.

Excuse me? Don’t you dare disrespect the Grand Kaman. Would love his ugly ass on the Stones.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:06 PM
Kaman almost gets a double double a night, and Eric Gordon will be top 5 at his position by the end of the year at the age of 23. Not actually an “ok” guard and “shitty” big man.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:06 PM
You think Gordon is an “ok” guard? Really?
This trade allowed them to accumulate young, cheap talent. Team that has salary cap flexibility and multiple first round draft picks in a strong draft class. It’ll make the team more attractive to potential buyers.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:11 PM
Said it on twitter. People blasted the great David stern for turning down that trade. Now they get a better deal, Paul doesn’t go to lakers AND they lose Lamar, and the mavericks get better. Plus previous trade didn’t make sense for Houston so they avoid that mistake. I’m telling you, David stern is awesome.

Home run for Stern and for the Clippers. You can dissect what they gave up all you want but the fact is, for the first time in franchise history they actually matter. Can’t put a price on that.

Eugene Withers has officially been named an assistant coach for OSU.
The bad news, Cyrus Jones has decided to go to Bama. Damn you Saban! Oh well, now its full force ahead on Stefon Diggs and Joel Caleb.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:27 PM
Ofcourse if Minnesota makes the playoff this year, not out of the realm of possibility, that would knock down this trade a notch or two. But hopefully the hornets can bottom out so their own pick is a high one.

Wasn’t that caveman just an all star a couple years ago? How the hell did he decline so quickly.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
Gordon >>>> Bledsoe. Bledsoe was a 7ppg rookie while Gordon averaged 16ppg as a rookie and 22ppg at 23 years old.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
Yea, granted I didn’t watch a whole lot of Clipper games this year, but I thought Kaman was decent value in this trade.
December 14th, 2011 at 9:42 PM
It’s not about what you have done, it’s all about upside.

The Clippers now have Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. Let’s not overlook the simple facts here.

Does Diggs even know OSU exists? They certainly aren’t in his top 15.

If the Clippers curse can make a mortal out of Danny Manning, Chris Paul is fucked.
December 14th, 2011 at 10:16 PM
I don’t know man. Lot of old dogs on their decline out west. In short season, young team like t-wolves got a chance.
December 14th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
Until one of those guards proves to be a reliable starter, no chance.
December 14th, 2011 at 10:27 PM
In short season, young team like t-wolves got a chance.
Yep. Better coaching should help them, too. Also, the idea that Bledsoe is more desirable than Gordon is hilarious.

TBL, I disagree with you on rather having Bledsoe than Gordon, but I fully agree that the Hornets are better off bottoming out. In the NBA, there’s no point to assembling a mediocre team year after year and drafting in the 12-16 range. It’s better to totally tank for a year or two and hope to hit on some top 5 picks (which is a risky proposition in its own right).

I’d assume Chauncey Billups, whom they just picked up, will be waived.
Never go full retard. No way this happens.

Ravens, Browns and Bengals fans are gonna love the new Dark Knight Rises trailer
That scene were Pat Shurmur was traded to the Steelers for a horde of draft picks was the best part of the trailer, with the dark Hans Zimmer score 2nd best.
December 15th, 2011 at 7:26 AM
Did you really just say that you’d rather have Bledsoe than Gordon?
You’d rather have a good young point guard coming off of knee surgery (that’s why they claimed Billups…..) than a great young shooting guard who may be the best 2 in the NBA under 30?
Seriously?
And yeah, waiving Billups idea. Pretty bad, too.
Again, Bledsoe is recovering from knee surgery and Chris Paul has his own knee injury history.
The Clips can use a cheap, veteran point guard still.
