James Harrison Suspended One Game For Hit On Colt McCoy
Adam Schefter has reported that the NFL is suspending Pittsburgh’s James Harrison for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cleveland QB Colt McCoy last Thursday. The hit prompted Colt McCoy’s dad to tell a Cleveland newspaper his son didn’t remember anything in the game after it.
It is the first suspension for a helmet hit, and is the fifth time Harrison has been penalized for personal fouls related to helmet hits over the last three seasons. Last year, he was fined on multiple occasions. In the offseason, he took his frustration out on Commissioner Goodell, calling him a “crook and a puppet” and that he wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
I’m sure Goodell took those comments into consideration.
On this hit, the specific incident alone wasn’t any worse than several others, though Harrison did clearly lead with his helmet immediately after McCoy passed to a receiver. It was likely the accumulation of incidents that ultimately led to this decision.

It was a long time coming. Cannot call the commissioner of the league a homophobic slur, publicly state that you continue to commit dirty hits, and not get suspended. Enjoy your week off, you POS.

So, when does McClain get suspended for, you know, firing a gun at someone?
December 13th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
good. hopefully this thug gets kicked out of the league when his takes out another helpless Brown.
December 13th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
I hate some of the new hitting regulations as much as the next guy ( I remember one this year on brian dawkins where he hit a guy to dislodge the ball, and got a flag) but this one was downright rotten.
Harrison had full access to hit this guy, and could have driven his shoulder clear through McCoy and lacerated his liver, but instead, he chose head shot.
My preferred suspension for this was team choice – 3 regular season games, or 1 playoff game.
December 13th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
if it was anyone but JH i would protest a bit, because mccoy was in harm’s way, but harison is a headhunter and it was late anyway
still, we need more posts on the browns fucking up mccoy’s concussion testing, that’s the NEWS here, not another punishment for this guy

Too short. Needs to be the rest of the regular season due to being a non-remorseful repeat offender.

concussions are funny tho. the way bradford’s head slammed to the turf last night was the same as others whose arms then go straight up, but he popped up. maybe his brain’s smaller

I’m hopeful he appeals, plays this weekend, and then sits against the Rams.

It’s a beautiful thing for the NFL. The rules give the a leg to stand on with regards to “we care about player safety”. And the controversy about Goodell’s rulings keep the violent hits replaying on ESPN and on the web for days and days, giving the NFL more and more coverage.

Why? What difference does it make what his name is? I get that I’m easy to rip on sometimes, but I don’t see how that makes my point any less relevant here. December 13th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
@ATL_Badger – I think almost everyone understands that when Goodell issues a punishment the severity is quite often determined by the offender’s history.
So yeah, it is rather relevant that you know who the player is so you know that player’s history.

I agree this is news, and I wrote about it Friday. I’m waiting to see if there is any follow up in the next few days by the NFL. If they suspend Harrison but then the larger issue of a team putting a player who was clearly concussed is not addressed, yeah, we will revisit.

no it’s not…if you can’t follow clearly outlined directions like “wear the same socks as your teammates…you know, the ones laid out for you already by a lowly equipment bitch?” you deserve to get docked. that’s selfish, ignorant and just dumb in general…even if the rule is stupid, it’s SO FUCKING EASY TO FOLLOW that if you don’t follow it, you deserve a stiff penalty. it’s totally premeditated if you break that rule.
the violent stuff probably should be fined heavier, agreed…but im all in favor of fining players for voluntarily breaking rules because they don’t like the way their calves look.
December 13th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
So yeah, it is rather relevant that you know who the player is so you know that player’s history.
I must mention the guys name when I say that it’s stupid that wearing the wrong colored shoes warrants a bigger fine than ending some guys season on a hit that Goodell has deemed dirty enough to warrant a fine? Okay. My point is irrelevant I guess.
