According to a source familiar with the case of cheating Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Braun, the results of the left fielder’s testosterone levels taken in October during the NLCS were “insanely high, the highest ever for anyone who has ever taken a test, twice the level of the highest test ever taken.” Impressive. Here’s what Braun’s spokesman had to say:

“There are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan’s complete innocence and demonstrate there was absolutely no intentional violation of the program… We are confident he will ultimately be exonerated.”

Absolutely loving the carefully worded “no intentional violation.” Reminds me of when Costanza accidentally slept with the cleaning lady on his desk: “Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?” I imagine those were the first words Braun delivered to MLB officials upon learning that the unusually high levels in his system were caused by “exogenous or synthetic testosterone,” which is to say those levels didn’t suddenly skyrocket due to the NL MVP’s overt manliness.

His lawyer, David Cornwell, the powerful fellow who represented Reggie Bush and Gilbert Arenas, has publicly stated that Braun did not take PEDs, and Braun himself has said as much in his own special way, calling it “all BS” and that he is “completely innocent.” He and his legal team plan to challenge the results at a hearing in January and, while it’s still early in the process, this already feels an awful lot like the stubborn Roger Clemens approach. And we’re all well aware of what an ugly, career-flattening and never-ending road that can become.

It’s also worth noting that Major League Baseball is 13-0 in its appeals process. Sounds promising for Braun.
