Kansas City Chiefs Coach Todd Haley Has Been Fired
Todd Haley is out as head coach of the Chiefs. Earlier this year, we talked about the reported rift between GM Scott Pioli and Todd Haley. There were reports Pioli was set to fire Haley earlier this season, but then Kansas City went on an mini-run following the dreadful start, winning 4 straight to briefly get above .500. Todd Haley acted like he was in Office Space. He started growing a full beard and looked as if he never showered. He seemed like a man resigned to his fate, and he was going out like a maverick.
Then QB Matt Cassel got hurt, and Tyler Palko was the alternative. Over the last 6 games, the Chiefs have scored 45 points, and the two touchdowns were a Hail Mary and a quasi-Hail Mary through a sea of hands in New York in garbage time. That is the third lowest total over a 6-game stretch since 2002, behind only the 2008 Browns (31 points from games 11 to 16) and 2009 Raiders (42 points from games 2 to 7).
Haley lost his cool on the sidelines (again) in New York and was penalized in a second half, something that rarely happens to coaches for sideline behavior. Watching Palko (16-of-32 passing, sacked five times) probably set him off. Pioli had enough, whether it was the antics, or the fact that the Chiefs have now lost 5 games by at least 27 points this year.

Weeeeeeeeeee!
December 12th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
That’s too bad. The Chiefs and Haley deserved each other.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
It’s now obious that Charlie Weis ran the show.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
I’ll take him as an OC once Martz leaves this spring.
Chiefs need to rally around Stanzi now and beat Green Bay this weekend. Use this as motivation.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
/team full beard
December 12th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
I wonder how many players on the Chiefs now wish they took a shot at this guy.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
I’d like to commend Lisk for not mentioning Kirk Ferentz in the post and remind the editor that despite his footnote, Kirk Ferentz’s son will still be a senior at the University of Iowa in the 2012-13 season.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Reading the roundup just now and am constantly amazed at Sportsgal’s demeanor around here. Girl is in desperate need of a good tongue punch to the fart box. Wound up tight, that one.

I know he’s your boy, but if he was worth a shit he’d already be playing.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
oooo, they can hire McDaniels and he can trade for Tebow!
December 12th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Next year’s worst-to-first. Guaranteed.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Is this the post where SC and I can mock Vlad for losing his fantasy hockey matchup this week to SenatorJersey, the last place team?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:47 AM

Oh, give it time. TBL is currently knee deep in a Ferentz to KC post that will go up this afternoon.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Pioli has ties to Nick Saban. Saban’s been at the same school for 5 years.
/smoke
December 12th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
How much leeway will Pioli continue to get? He’s just as responsible for that shitstorm at QB as anyone.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Get ready for some hot INTERIM COACHING ACTION.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
UCLA?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I’m currently a month in on mine. It’s starting to get annoying at times, but it’s still fun to just sit and stroke the beard to pass time.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
It’ll probably be ripe with conspiracies about how Kirk forced out Norm Parker yesterday from his defensive coordinator position. Not that his foot being amputated and his health issues had anything to do with it. He wanted to force Norm out so that a whole regime change could take place.
Scott Pioli is a diabolical mastermind. He planted those diabetes in Norm back in 1996 knowing that 15 years later he could scoop up KF as his head coach for the Chiefs.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
They already shot that bullet last year.

December 12th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
No high profile college coach worth their salt would take over this shitshow in KC. Who’s a hot assistant these days?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
he’ll get 2 more seasons, if they don’t turn it around then with their new HC and injured players back he’s out. and maybe back in NE.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
.
Harbaugh’s success will do wonders for college coaches wanting to get to the NFL, not that Saban hasn’t been there before. I don’t think Saban is long for college football.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
best plays i saw yesterday that may fly under top-play radar
peanut tillman’s INT — amazing body control
sean lee’s INT –amazing reactions while tied up with a blocker
oh, and the bolts are gambling gold lately
December 12th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Money talks.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
The surge begins.
Actually got to meet Pioli right before the game yesterday. Really nice guy.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Todd Haley joins the long list of coordinators who shouldn’t be head coaches. See: McDaniel, Josh; Phillips, Wade; Spagnuolo, Steve…
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Who’s a hot assistant these days?
MIke Nolan, but he’s a 3/4 guy. I expect a retread OC. Or even Marty Schottenheimer, who will then hire his kid as OC.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
If there is any justice Piloi takes the fall, too. Can’t hang Tyler Palko on Haley.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Haley had his chance. Some guys just aren’t meant to be head coaches.
In my gut, I could see Schwartz being in this place the next two to three years. Guys who lose their cool/can’t keep their poise have it tough in the National Football League.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
He won’t survive in the NFL either. Guys making a shit-ton of cash aren’t going to put up with his Napoleonic bullshit
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
lopped mine off about two weeks ago, wasn’t turning out as well as i had hoped this year
December 12th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
What the fuck has McDaniels done to warrant another HC position? I know the roster is mostly devoid of offensive talent, but the Rams have scored 11 offensive TDs in 12 games. Odd that someone who may not survive as coordinator for one team could become head coach of another.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
He’d be the dumbest man alive to leave the gig he has in Alabama for the pros, again.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Jason Garrett, JJ’s assistant.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
very underrated…the itchiness will pass brah.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
oh, and the bolts are gambling gold lately
That’s all we have left, brotha.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Who’s to say that Pioli won’t just tap McDaniels on the shoulder?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
you talking about your beard or your genital warts?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Not as much as it used to.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Todd Haley joins the long list of coordinators who shouldn’t be head coaches. See: McDaniel, Josh; Phillips, Wade; Spagnuolo, Steve…
Soon Turner, Norv is going to be on that list.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
beard…the wart itch never gets better.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Saban already realized the NFL isn’t for him…different game when you don’t have more talent than every team you face and the players don’t view you as a god
December 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Stoops.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
As soon as Xmas is over, it’s on. I can usually get just into Feb before it gets annoying. My record is President’s Day.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
i have a great beard right now. it’s usually never a plan, just lack of shaving until it gets a mond of its own
December 12th, 2011 at 11:58 AM
I dunno if I’d put him on the list. Has he really gotten a fair shake in STL?
December 12th, 2011 at 11:58 AM

I have 8 words for you: V.E.N.A.B.L.E.S.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Nope. He’s been handed a platter of feces by management
December 12th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
He’s not going anywhere. He’s got a top 5 job in CFB, and he knows he doesn’t have the mentality for the NFL.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
I’m almost 4 months in. Going to be a shock to the system when it gets removed.
December 12th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Can’t hang Tyler Palko on Haley.
Palko was Haley’s guy.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Soon Turner, Norv is going to be on that list.
Pfft, that list was named after Norv.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:02 PM

The only way to grow a beard. If I’m too conscious of it it’s like I must go to war with my face.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
/Team shaves every two weeks, lets it grow out, then shaves again
December 12th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
I’d be happy to have Spagnuolo back in Philadelphia, running the defense.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
why even remove it? your face is gonna look all gaunt and stuff if you shave it off.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
/team unable to grow a full beard
December 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Agreement with the wife. I get it for at most 6 months.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Dom Capers (?) feels left out.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Norv Turner wants a piece of this list.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Saban will be in Austin before long. They’ll pay him $8-$10MM/year and thank Mack for his service with a nice office next to Deloss’. Stoops v. Saban on an annual basis for 5 years will be something.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I don’t know whether to mock you, or be jealous.
/probably mock
December 12th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
If Saban wins that Championship game, they may make him Governor of Alabama. If I were Saban, I wouldn’t want to leave Alabama. Guy’s got it made there.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Chiefs are obviously waiting for the Browns to fire Pat Squirmer before they make any head coaching moves.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
A friend told me to go heavy on the conditioner and it alleviates the itch, this has mostly worked. Planning on keeping mine until New Year’s Eve.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Can they oversign in the Big 12? If not, Saban isn’t going to Texas.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Well, it would be nice if they had defensive talent like an Earl Thomas or JPP instead of an injured, soon-to-be bust Brandon Graham.
/vomits
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
I’d be happy to have Spagnuolo back in Philadelphia, running the defense.
Holy Fuck, no! That would just wreak havoc on the Giants.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
do you make her shave her beard for 6 months too?/resists making inappropriate comment and jsut accepts Hawkeye’s explanation at face value
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
But why would he want to live in Alabama?
/everyone’s question for everything
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
i thought the same thing…but now? pssh…debunked.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
December 12th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
His performance this year should keep him in Green Bay. Thankfully, I might add because this year isn’t his fault. TT has seven rounds to find a defensive lineman and another outside linebacker who can rush the passer.

/but it’s NYC!

Tried it this summer/fall. Looked mangy and grey, like Grady on “Sanford and Son”. It’ll be a while before I try again.

I hope he was fired a la Vince McMahon, just to shove it in Spaz Haley’s face.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
lol.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Could we get a post on where Chris Paul may live in LA?
December 12th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
He was already the most beloved person in Louisiana since Huey Long, and he didn’t have a second state university to compete with. And he gave that up.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
Saban isn’t going to Texas. Chris Petersen will be their next head coach.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
What becomes of Manny Diaz? Some Big LEast HC job?
December 12th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Being the top man at LSU isn’t the same as being the top man in Alabama. It’s just not. I could see Saban leaving because he’s Saban, but I can’t imagine he leaves for another college job. He can oversign like crazy at Bama, has the local media sucking his dick at every turn and is the Napoleon of the state. He also makes more than any coach except Mack, and if Texas ever approached him, Bama would cut funding to every state program to make up the difference and then some.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:17 PM

I really thought he’d be a Laker by this morning. I’m surprised.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Wouldn’t he just stay at Texas? Maybe Pete goes and gets Wilcox from Tenn, but I would think Harsin would be the OC and Petersen would keep Diaz. I would think Diaz would be a HC before Mack retires anyway.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I’m 3 weeks into the beard, and I look as bad as Haley.
Can’t believe that Josh McDaniels would be a favorite. I might have to root for someone else or at least go underground for a period of time.

Yeah well, he’s going to have to start changing a little bit, otherwise they’re going to keep spinning their wheels.
/totally fine with that
//fuck the Cowboys.

You know it. Dude is smaller than I am. It cracks me up every time I think about it.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Crennel is the interim, makes sense. I bet he really fires ‘em up for a fine finish to the season.
/Looks over at Romeo Crennel
//Gets fired up
December 12th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Didn’t TBL have a poll or do a write-up about which playoff teams from last year was gonna crap the bed this year and either not make the playoffs/finish last in the division?
someone got that link?
December 12th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
I hypothesize that Nick Saban is the only person Jerry Jones would back off for. Because it gets him one of the best coaches in the business and it gets him out of the same division as Arkansas.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
well caribou, the bears fit that description
urlacher btw was classless, calling tebow a running back who throws the ball well
December 12th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
dude isn’t suited to own a team and win the way he is running it. good business man, but in sports the good business man defers to people who actually know more about football than they do.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Yeah well, he’s going to have to start changing a little bit, otherwise they’re going to keep spinning their wheels.
he will change when he dies. until then, he runs that team top to bottom.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Would any other GM whose team has won one football game in 15 years even sniff another job?
December 12th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
even a GM hired through nepotism would have been fired.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Carl Peterson almost landed in Miami after getting canned from the Chefs…and for all I know is some consultant down there even now. Other than that, though, I got nobody.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
And obviously I meant *playoff* football game.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
They said that about Parcells too…
December 12th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
That’s before he used his influence to steal Bobby Petrino away from the Falcons.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Don’t have time to read all the comments. Not surprised by the move. I think he sealed his fate with the sideline tantrum yesterday. I actually think Haley might not be a bad head coach in the right situation (veteran team). He wasn’t the right guy to develop this team.
That being said, Pioli has not done him any favors. The starting QB (Cassell) has back up level talent and the backup QB (Palko) has 3rd string talent. Lots of key injuries and no depth in important places despite lots of cap money available. That’s on the GM. I hope Clark Hunt put Pioli on notice as well. This crapfest is just as much his doing as Haley’s.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Also, the players never quit on Haley which is to his credit. They certainly had reason to, especially since Palko took over and started spraying the football everywhere. Guys like Bowe, Baldwin, Thomas Jones, etc. have kept quiet despite the fact that their talent was being wasted. There was no internal mutiny that I’m aware of.
December 12th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
And finally, pleae no Josh McDaniels or other supposed hot shot from the Patriot’s coaching tree. Unless Pioli falls ass backward into another Tom Brady, he needs to get over the whole Patriot Way crap. Hasn’t really worked for anyone else from that extended staff.
I’m sure someone like Cowher is a pipe dream. I fully expect Pioli to hire someone who falls in line and does what he’s told without questioning the GM.
December 12th, 2011 at 1:32 PM
He sucked from day one. Good riddance.
