Miguel Torres Cut From UFC Over A Rape Joke
Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres was cut from the UFC yesterday. Torres’ termination came in the wake of a controversy concerning a joke he made about rape vans on Twitter. It was a bold move by the UFC and there’s no telling what the long term ramifications will be for the organization.
On Wednesday, Torres tweeted:
@MiguelTorresMMA: If a windowless van was called a surprise van, more people wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.
On Thursday, he was fired. Ready for the double-standard? In November, former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin tweeted a rape joke. He was not fired. During Wednesday’s UFC On FOX 2 press conference, former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans made a joke about the Penn State scandal, directed at former PSU wrestler, Phil Davis. He was not fired. Here’s Dana’s explanation.
To be fair, that wasn’t Torres’ only rape joke this week.
@MiguelTorresMMA: Your mouth says no but my roofies say yes.
If Torres is in any other sports league, he’s looking at a nice little fine. In the UFC? He gets fired by Dana White who went on an expletive-filled tirade against reporter Loretta Hunt a few years ago where he called her a “fucking dumb bitch.” (He also referred to an anonymous source as a “pussy and a fucking faggot” during that rant.)
Was Torres’ firing the example that the UFC had to set now that they’re working with FOX? Maybe. If Torres wants to say something stupid, that’s his right as an American. I guess it’s also the UFC’s right to fire him. I would say that this sets a dangerous precedent for the UFC, but that’s not true.
For years Zuffa has handled each incident they have been faced with on a case by case basis with little to no consideration for any previous example. Some guys test positive for performance enhancing drugs, they get fired. Some guys test positive, they sit out for a little while and get a title shot. It all comes down to who is making the UFC money. Right now, Torres isn’t doing that. While the former WEC champ is 2-1 in the UFC, he’s had all three fights go to decision. Gone is the exciting non-style that pushed his career record to 37-1 in 2009 and thus, gone is the contract.

I bet he wishes he had made a better rape joke. That one he got fired over is kind of lame. Maybe he got fired because his rape jokes lack edginess?

I believe it was a reference to the rape van from Workaholics.

Rape is bad. You shouldn’t rape anyone. Unless you have a good reason. Like you wanna have sex with someone and they won’t let you. WHat other choice do you have? How are you supposed have an orgasm in their body if you don’t rape them?

So, I was about an hour too late to meet this guy today. This little asshole made me unable to pick up my bourbon from the store.

Classic overreaction by DFW. But the joke was stupid, and in poor taste. With the new Fox deal, I can see why the UFC would be on high alert for things like this though. They do not need any bad PR right now as they try to prove to the masses that MMA is a legit sport and not human cockfighting. Personally I would have liked to see Forrest cut too, but only cause he’s always rubbed me the wrong way, like the kind of rubs you’d get in a windowless van.

Dana White is worse thatn Goodell with his bullshit fines/punishments.
Like it was said, there is no consistency whatsoever when it comes to these things. Fuck Dana White. You almost think for UFC to get to the next level they need to get rid of this arrogant prick.

Here’s a good comment I read:
“This is what happens when you encourage your employees to use social media, who in an attempt to promote themselves, occasionally speak out of emotion and excitement, rather than rational thought and intelligence.
The correct answer in my opinion, is to set a code of conduct for your employees, then dish out punishment when that code of conduct is violated. This whole situation reeks of contradiction, hypocrisy, and favoritism.
This is the fight game, it’s not a tickling competition. I don’t expect everybody to be nice and be gentlemen. Sometimes it makes for good tv and is good for business. But there needs to be a line drawn and you can’t give one guy a warning and then fire the next one.
Sure, timing is an issue perhaps, but did Miguel know about Griffin’s and Rashad’s comments before he made his? And if he did, did he know they were issued warnings? Did Dana send an e-mail company wide warning of those situations and not to do it again? In Miguel’s defense, if he isn’t in the inner circle of Dana, Griffin or Rashad, how would he even know there were warnings? Since neither of them were fired, he might have assumed it was ok.
I’m not saying I agree or condone his actions, but lets set a standard and live by it instead of making decisions based on whims, ego, and the adrenaline he gets running the worlds best MMA promotion.”

Aren’t 95% of MMA fans Rapist anyway?
Dana, you are biting the hand that feeds. Don’t bite it, put it on your cock against it’s will and make things right.
