Chris Paul Trade Fallout: Which Offer Was Better – the Lakers/Rockets, or the Clippers?
I’m hot about the Chris Paul trade that has been blocked. I’ve been seething about David Stern and the petulant owners since last night. I’m so fired up that I’ve been ranting to my wife about it – and she doesn’t even know who Chris Paul is.
But a wise man pointed out something to me this morning: Was the Clippers’ trade for Chris Paul actually better than the one the Rockets and Lakers offered?
We’ll be working under the assumption that the Clippers were offering Eric Bledsoe, Chris Kaman, Al-farouq Aminu and an unprotected draft pick the Clippers acquired. Financially, what the Clippers are offering was terrific.
Eric Bledsoe, age 22: $3.3 million over the next two years, then a team option
Al-farouq Aminu, age 21: $5.7 million over the next two years, then a team option
Chris Kaman age 29: $12 million this year, but he’s an expiring contract.
Minnesota probably isn’t a playoff team, so you’re looking at a pick in the 10-18 range.
Let’s match that up against what the Houston/LA trade was:
Kevin Martin, age 28: $12,019,840 this year; $12,939,675 in 2012-2013
Luis Scola, age 31: $8,591,793 this year; $9,408,207 in 2012-2013; $10,224,622 in 2013-2014; $11,041,037 in 2014-2015
Lamar Odom, age 32: $8,900,000 this year; team option for $8,200,000 in 2012-2013
Goran Dragic, age 25: $2.1 million this year, then he’s a free agent
1st round draft pick in 2012 from Houston. The Rockets – if they got Gasol – are contending for the 8th playoff spot. [UPDATE: The pick appears to be New York's ... which is even worse. The Knicks will be a Top 5 seed in the East.]
The Clippers trade would help the Hornets get younger. Chris Kaman and Emeka Okafor won’t be able to co-exist in the middle, but Kaman is a potentially-attractive expiring contract for a contender. Might someone want to take a chance on Kaman at the trade deadline? Bledsoe (18th pick in 2010) showed flashes last season; Aminu (8th pick in 2010) barely got playing time in LA, but who knows what he could do with 30 minutes a night in New Orleans (he was a star at Wake Forest).
While I love Dragic, Martin is an aging shooting guard who can score, but does little else. Scola’s a very nice role player but has a horrible contract. Lamar Odom has undeniable talent, but he’s 32 and almost certainly will pout for two years. I really, really like Dragic (who can forget this?), but if he’s traded, this will be his third team in two seasons. Why isn’t he sticking anywhere? The biggest problem with this deal is that the Hornets are locked into the Okafor/Scola C/PF combo for at least the next three years at a total over over $20 mil per year. Gross.
Then the question becomes: Ok, which of these two deals sets you up better long term? I’d say that pretty clearly is the Clippers deal. It’s not like Bledsoe/Aminu are going to turn the Hornets into a contender, but would you rather be in the draft next year (it’s loaded) or would you rather have a team jockeying for the 8th playoff spot?
Final note: Daryl Morey, the Rockets’ GM, is considered one of the smartest in the league.
Are you maybe beginning to wonder: Did Dell Demps present this deal to Chris Paul and his agent, only to have them reject it because he wants to play for the Lakers? Because I’d ask, uh, Chris, would you rather play with an aging Kobe Bryant and an oft-injured Andrew Bynum … or Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon?

If Bill Simmons wasn’t buddies with him, would this be true?
December 9th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
It was my understanding that the Hornets wanted Gordon & the Clippers wouldn’t part w/ him.
And if you were CP where would you rather go? Clippers or Lakers? Exactly.

And if you were CP where would you rather go? Clippers or Lakers? Exactly.
Wouldn’t want to play for sterling… but I don’t think going to the Clips wouldn’t have been a terrible move for him.

yeah, this reputation is not deserved.
December 9th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I’d rather play for the marquee franchise that has the league’s 2nd most recognizable star who has a shot at 1 or 2 more titles with the possibility of landing another elite talent after that guy retires than an afterthought owned by a racist.
December 9th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I am very happy something like this happened to the Lakers, makes it that much more fun.
December 9th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
LA is a Laker town, no? Why wouldn’t Paul want to go to the Lakers?
/Superteams!
December 9th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
But I don’t know if the Thunder would want to trade Westbrook for Paul, even though I think it would be better for KD.

wasn’t it the Knicks’ pick?

That’s like asking if I’d rather play for the Yankees or the Mets.

yes.

December 9th, 2011 at 12:02 PM
Paul – Gordon – Griffin would be a pretty slick combo. But yeah, there’s just something about not wanting to be a Clipper.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
well if its the Knicks’ pick, that’s even worse. they are definitely a playoff team. i’ll look it up.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
So, is there going to be some kind of big trade attempt again today or what? Or are the teams going to let this Paul this stew until Monday and not make any transactions until they feel it’s fully resolved?
League could do itself a huge favor if Howard or Paul got moved before close of business today. Everyone would quickly forget about the veto.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Are the people who think this the same ones who will tell you Kenny Williams is a savvy GM?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
This should read 1-18.
Also, it doesn’t matter which one we think is better…the GM of the Hornets made the Lakers deal.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
First off, if Morey is such a great GM, why did he give Scola that “horrible contract?” Second, this completely goes against the argument the NBA is making. It was a “basketball decision.” They are obviously concerned about selling the team for lesser value without a star player. Would you rather sell a team that at least has a decent chance to make the playoffs with the Houston/LAL trade or one that has no chance and may or may not have a bright future with two or three very unproven commodities.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Speaking of Kenny… I heard that Beckham could get moved before the calendar year ends, Butters. They were talking about it on the radio last night. Kenny denies any chance of him moving.
If they can get a decent return, I’d say move the kid. He hasn’t show much more than flashes in 2.5 years.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
All players are aging, but did you have to single out Kevin Martin (28)?
What the fuck?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
I preferred the Clippers offer myself. Aminu > any wing player the Hornets have had since Mashburn retired. Minnesota’s pick could be anywhere within Top 20 in a deep draft. And Bledsoe could surprise (or he could be another Jarrett Jack, a solid bench player). Plus Kamans’ expiring deal could be turned around for more pieces.
But I don’t know if that deal was really offered. Or if the Warriors were really into it. I will trust Demps’ senses that what the Lakers/Rockets were giving up was the best deal.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
1st round draft pick in 2012 from Houston. The Rockets – if they got Gasol – are contending for the 8th playoff spot.
obviously this doesn’t matter, since you’re wrong about the origin of the draft choice, but with Gasol and the which guysleft on this roster is Houston competing for a playoff spot?
Thabeet, Chase Budinger, and Kyle Lowry? And Johnny Flynn? That’s a playoff competitor?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
All players are aging,

December 9th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I’m still wondering how Chris Paul and Kobe would play together. Has Kobe ever played with a talent like that at PG? Has he ever played with anything that close?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:15 PM

So, is there going to be some kind of big trade attempt again today or what? Or are the teams going to let this Paul this stew until Monday and not make any transactions until they feel it’s fully resolved?
Wonder if we might see a bit of solidarity from GMs who can’t like the idea of the league torpedoing their hard work.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Will there be a post on Mike Dunleavy signing with the Bucks?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Isn’t this what I got criticized for before? I just don’t see any of those four guys starting for a 50 win team. I’d love all those guys as sixth/seventh men, but oof if that’s your starting five (with Okafor/Jack).
December 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Put it on your own blog you whiny little bitch.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
I think Morey is still considered one of the sharper GM’s by league people, but after being worshipped here in the city initially he’s starting to feel a little heat. The bloom is off the rose, as it were.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Like I said. If Paul was going to Portland or Toronto, no one would give a fuck.
I would absolutely want to go play with Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon before I played with Kobe. I understand wanting to be in a big market, but I just don’t get how Paul doesn’t ask to get traded to OKC or the Clips, teams that actually have bonafide young talent.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Not a good trade for NO on the surface, ’cause that’s a 30 win team. However, Scola, Martin, & Odom have value and they could flip each separately for 3 high draft picks. Clips would have to include Gordon to match – otherwise that clips trade is garbage.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I’m still wondering how Chris Paul and Kobe would play together. Has Kobe ever played with a talent like that at PG? Has he ever played with anything that close?
I’d guess today’s Kobe would work well with this kind of PG. The Kobe 10 years ago, not so much. And Jordan Farmar is just a poor man’s Chris Paul right?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Those three make a ton of sense. I’m sure Paul and Kobe could figure out how to coexist, but guys like Jordan/LeBron/Kobe/Bird don’t need/want point guards. The offense runs through them (though out of the four, Kobe probably does the most without the ball in his hands).
December 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Has he ever played with anything that close?
How can you so quickly forget the Smush Parker era?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Yeah, Tyronn Lue
December 9th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I would absolutely want to go play with Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon before I played with Kobe. I understand wanting to be in a big market, but I just don’t get how Paul doesn’t ask to get traded to OKC or the Clips, teams that actually have bonafide young talent.
If I’m CP3, I look at playing alongside Griffin and the Clips as the chance to own my team while playing in a major market.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Wonder if we might see a bit of solidarity from GMs who can’t like the idea of the league torpedoing their hard work.
I saw a link on ESPN that said the teams were appealing the decision to block the trade.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
and the winner is…
Tyronn Lue. Sorry, Scripty.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
The olympics and if you want to stretch, that brief period with Payton. But yeah, Kobe now would benefit a lot from having Paul as a running mate.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
I asked this back in moderation: Yes or No, does the trade go through? I think Paul is gone by Monday, and probably to the Lakers still.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
So 33-33 and they’ll pretty much have the same pick range as the TWolves.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
In what world are these 3 guys each worth a “high” draft pick??
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Donald Sterling is a part of that Blake Griffin and Eric Gordon deal. You still want to play there instead of for Jerry Buss and a team that could easily add another elite talent after Kobe retires?

December 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Easily. If there is anything that pisses me off about the whole players dictating where they go thing, it’s that they have no sense of adventure. No sense of wanting a challenge. Especially when those challenges are absolutely ideal. The Clippers are literally built for a point guard like Paul to just go Drew Brees in that bitch.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
The Lakers always reload…Paul knows that. Paul wouldn’t worry about being competitive over the next 5 years, with or without Kobe.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
In what world are high NBA draft picks really worth that much, either? Though really, I hated the trade for the Hornets. Unless you are contracting the team and WANT Paul to walk (and pay off the rest), you need to get a guy like Gasol in there, to maintain value for when you sell it.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Was Nick Van Exel a PG with Bryant when Kobe was in his early 20s?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I asked this back in moderation: Yes or No, does the trade go through? I think Paul is gone by Monday, and probably to the Lakers still.
If this does happen and CP3 still goes to the Lakers, that’d be some serious egg on Stern’s fat face. Does it also mean his CEO title is in jeopardy?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
How good is Eric Bledsoe. Forgetting that Paul is the alternative, is he a good enough distributer for that team to contend?
I love the five of Griffin-Jordan-Aminu-Bledsoe-Gordon, and you have Kaman/Williams on the bench or to trade.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
And Jordan Farmar is just a poor man’s Chris Paul right?
I desperately hope this is sarcasm that I didnt get
December 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Is Donald Sterling really a factor? Really? Maybe? But not a certainty. His racist jacks spends as well as the next guy. Have players stood up to this guy and demanded his sale of the team? Why not?
/don’t doubt his evil but there has not been an uproar you’d think there’d be…
December 9th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
He fleeced Sac for Martin, same with SA for Scola and Memphis for Lowry. He’s very good but you don’t get superstars without bottoming out and getting lucky in the lottery (unless superstar demands trade to your team).
December 9th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
IN A WORLD–WHERE LAMAR ODOM IS WORTH A HIGH DRAFT PICK…..
/in movie preview voice
December 9th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I’d get over that really quick when I realize I have a to guys under 25 that are absolute ballers at their positions. And that as I step in it be pretty much easy to call the team my own. Like, we forget that there have been significant stretches in the past two decades when the Lakers were not a dominant franchise. The Lakers have to be smelling another stretch.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Ahh… Nick the Quick. The Eldon Campbell years.. Eddie Jones. I miss Nick, but I miss his ghetto eyebrow lines more.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
I guess a better way of saying it would be… not many teams would want to take on those three guys, and those contracts, when they can just use their pick on a young, cheap, guy in the draft to potentially build around.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
They could get a 19 year old with lots of promise who will just demand to be traded to New York when he’s about to become an All Star at the ripe old age of 23.
/vicious cycle
December 9th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
I remember around late January/February, they started on a huge roll. Didn’t they actually flirt with making the playoffs?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
He fleeced Sac for Martin, same with SA for Scola and Memphis for Lowry. He’s very good but you don’t get superstars without bottoming out and getting lucky in the lottery (unless superstar demands trade to your team).
True, but he was also kind enough to take Thabeet from the Grizz as well, when virtually no one else in the league wanted a 7-footer.
I like the guy, for that if nothing else.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Eh, screw it, they actually tapered off at the end of the season.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I think they could get at least a top 14 pick for each guy. I’m sure that was their plan.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
haha, nicely done
December 9th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
You know my thoughts on Blake Griffin, Jersey. I suppose having an elite talent like Paul come in would add to Griffin’s one trick pony act though. He is the perfect compliment to that kind of player. Look what he did for Chandler.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
He brings guests into his locker room to view the “fine specimens”.

I saw a link on ESPN that said the teams were appealing the decision to block the trade.
I just saw a tweet that got retweeted about 10 times that says that the owners can’t appeal, because Stern blocking the trade was acting on behalf of the NBA owners and as the “owner” of the Hornets.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Wilbon just went in on the owners and Stern on TWWL website.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
They started to make a small push and then collapsed, but I never watched them play much. Gordon-Griffin-Jordan and any distributing point guard would be an awesome team to watch.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
He’s taking a flyer on the guy. I think almost all of his moves have been good ones, but you can’t win without a superstar. Houston not an attractive city like Miami, LA, NY and Rockets haven’t gotten a lucky ping pong ball.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Sure would be nice if the Hornets had a backcourt of Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton right now.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Been a bit too much of that today. Actually every day. Actually all the time.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
This. I never fully understood trading away Collison.

True, but he was also kind enough to take Thabeet from the Grizz as well, when virtually no one else in the league wanted a 7-footer.
He’s taking a flyer on the guy.
But that gets back to the original circular argument. Small market teams and teams in “less attractive” cities (Memphis, for example) can’t afford to take many fliers on guys, at those prices.
Furthermore, those same cities rarely win the “powerball” lottery. So, it appears they are hosed coming and going.
The Houstons and Memphises are in the same boat, year after year. While the Lakers, Heat, Celtics and their ilk dominate the headlines, the others mud-wrestle for scraps of attention
