Except he’s comparing the salary over the next 3 years of 1 player who is currently due 16 million for the next 3 years (0 after this year) to 2 players who are due a combined 75 million.

So yes, the Lakers are “saving money” by taking on one player with an expiring contract and trading 2 players who are under contract.
