The NBA Owners Are Trying to Kill the Chris Paul-to-the-Lakers Trade [UPDATE: The Owners Killed It]
The NBA owners are apparently ticked off that David Stern would let the league-owned Hornets trade Chris Paul to the Lakers, so they’re trying to block it.
[UPDATE: The owners killed the trade. It's off.]
Yes, the league owning the Hornets is a conflict of interest. There’s no debate over that. Here’s the problem: What’s the point of the league blocking the trade when Chris Paul’s just going to leave after the season and the Hornets will get zero compensation?
As it stands right now, the Hornets are getting three potential starters (Kevin Martin, Lamar Odom and Luis Scola), and I think they’ll have a solid starting five next season (add point guard Jarrett Jack and center Emeka Okafor). How do we know that group won’t contend for the 7th or 8th playoff spot? How do we know GM Dell Demps won’t try to flip Martin, Scola or anyone else on the roster to a contender at the trade deadline? Do we even know what draft picks the Hornets are getting in the trade?
What would be much worse is not trading Paul and letting him walk in the offseason. Then you’re looking at a horrible roster – who is buying that team? – with little flexibility. And don’t play the “they’ll have cap room!” card – it is well established that free agents want to a) play with their friends or b) play in the city of of their choice, and New Orleans does not appear to be a marquee destination.

WTF is wrong with these owners. Paul is going to go to a top team regardless, and its not like the Lakers aren’t losing valueable peices. This isn’t exactly Kwame for Gasol.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:17 PM
lollercoaster
December 8th, 2011 at 9:18 PM
Unnamed owners allegedly wrote Stern a demand note. In Comic Sans.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:19 PM
I’m so pissed I can’t even spell properly.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:19 PM
CP3 needs to lawyer up.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:21 PM
Seriously, this is so fucking ridiculous.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:21 PM
Clarence! Clarence! You did it Clarence!
/runs around ringing bell
December 8th, 2011 at 9:27 PM
I’m not even mad that the trade didn’t go through – I like Pau. I’m mad that the trades of one team are dictated by 28 other unhappy owners, and vetoed by the Commish for no reasons other than because other owners don’t like it. That makes ZERO sense, and makes the NBA look like the most clownish sports league in North America. This is fucking embarrassing. I respect Stern but this makes him look so, so, so weak.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:28 PM
Owners are idiots. Lakers got worse not better with that deal.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:30 PM
This has Cuban’s fingerprints all over it.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:31 PM
agree with Karma & Curtis – the owners are idiots. this would be a terrible decision.
I’m sure a handful of owners think they have a shot at Paul, and then the rest just went along with it. this is where the league is: players want to play with their friends and win titles. you have to draft wisely, set your sights on realistic free agents, and yes, there’s some luck involved.
how lucky did Boston get to land Allen/KG? They were smart getting Rondo, who turned out to be a great pick. Perkins was a smart pickup, too.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:33 PM
Phil Jackson, the prophet: “Who’s going to pull the button on it?” Jackson asked. “When Chris says he has to be traded, how’s that going to go? … Someone’s going to have to make a very nonjudgmental decision on that part that’s not going to irritate anyone else in the league.” – December 2010.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:34 PM
Ouch Steelers
December 8th, 2011 at 9:37 PM
NFL – nation of fucking liars. They said you would be able to watch the game streaming live on the NFL iPad app. In reality, it’s studio chatter with occasional live look-ins to the game. Assholes
December 8th, 2011 at 9:38 PM
Not to mention Boston had 15 down years to get there. The owners seem to be worried about public perception of the new CBA. Basketball people signed off on the trade. WTF. What a circus.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
Just wait until Jerry Buss gets outta the hospital. David Stern’s gonna get bitch slapped over this.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
So does this mean Paul to the Clippers is back on?
December 8th, 2011 at 9:40 PM
I’m guessing if it was Andrew Bynum that got traded instead of Gasol, league would have allowed it. What owners were afraid of was that Lakers would get Chris Paul without giving up Bynum, and then ship Bynum to Orlando for Dwight Howard.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:41 PM
wow, that’s awful. Did they explicitly state that you would be able to watch the game, or did they just dance around the topic? In any case, that’s not cool of them to do.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:44 PM
DK – thats what it said in the update last week. But then you have to go to the actual app description where they specify that its only studio analysis and lookIns. Good ol bait and switch. I guess you get what you pay for and the app was free.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:51 PM
Sounds like it is Cuban. But this is ridiculous that Stern would cave. Unbelievable.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:52 PM
Most overrated commissioner in sports. Typical Stern: more concerned with appearance than substance.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:54 PM
Considering Jerry Buss is the most accomplished owner in the history of American sports, he should have something to say about this tomorrow morning when he wakes up.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:54 PM
Wow. Just as I was tellin my buds about the trade it looks like it is pretty much dead.
So WTF? The Hornets are owned by the league and yahoo said it looks like Paul will be a Hornet for the foreseeable future.
Some owners pushed Stern to demand the trade be nullified, and the Hornets be made to keep Paul on the roster for the foreseeable future, sources said
December 8th, 2011 at 9:55 PM
Amid the many boring parts of the ESPN book, the parts about David Stern and his behavior in meetings and negotiations just show how much of a unlikeable, egomaniacal douche he is
December 8th, 2011 at 9:55 PM
This.
For all the shit Selig gets, I’d take him over Stern in a heartbeat.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:57 PM
You know what’s funny? Owners want to veto this trade cause they it made them look bad on the heels of the CBA. And then they go out and do something that makes them looks a thousand times worse.
December 8th, 2011 at 9:58 PM
The owners are crazy, Paul and Howard are going to get what they want either thru free agency or a trade. Might as well get something for them before they bolt like Lebron and Bosh.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:01 PM
The NBA looks like a joke of a league with this debacle.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:03 PM
It sure would be convenient for the NBA to blame this shitstorm on the most outspoken owner in the history of the league. Why would Cuban care, he’s got his trophy.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:04 PM
So..the Florida Panthers lead their division by 7 points and are 2nd in the East..damn, i love hockey. Its crazy
December 8th, 2011 at 10:09 PM
lololol
/wanking motion
December 8th, 2011 at 10:09 PM
no question
December 8th, 2011 at 10:11 PM
Stern’s ego would never allow him to cave to Cuban, and Cuban wouldn’t care about the transaction. These owners are vying with the Republican party as the dumbest collection of millionaires.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:16 PM
How the hell can any of these owners expect their own potential trades to go through if they move to block other teams’ trades?
Do I like the trade? No. It may be a blessing in disguise if it lets the Warriors or Clippers back in. BUT that doesn’t mean that I like the idea of my team’s moves needing approval from others.
Anyone wanna bet that Sarver was involved?
December 8th, 2011 at 10:17 PM
The NBA looks like a joke of a league with this debacle.
Didn’t the last offseason do that for them already?
December 8th, 2011 at 10:20 PM
It’s apples and oranges. Other trades don’t get blocked because one of the party isn’t owned by the league. As is the case with the Hornets.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:21 PM
damn straight
December 8th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
I think the Kardashians have that title locked down
December 8th, 2011 at 10:25 PM
“”In the end, David (Stern) didn’t like that the players were dictating where they wanted to go,” source says.”
Chris Paul is a free agent in 8 months.
What. The. Fuck.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:27 PM
Wouldnt surprise me if the owners email chain started with some Comic Sans. He thinks the property should play where the owner wants.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:28 PM
NBA owners look like butthurt fantasy league players vetoing a trade just cuz..
December 8th, 2011 at 10:31 PM
[UPDATE: The owners killed the trade. It's off.]
So you’re saying Dolan has a chance….
December 8th, 2011 at 10:32 PM
i hate you david stern
December 8th, 2011 at 10:32 PM
I predict we’ll hear the “The Miami 3 will take less to get Paul” next offseason. The Owners will then be happy to approve this trade.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:33 PM
!
December 8th, 2011 at 10:36 PM
Unfortunately, the NBA can’t block people’s access/plans for working where they will, for whom they will, for whatever amount of money they will. CP3 is leaving NOLA and I for one would rather the team not suffer more than it has to when that happens.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:36 PM
Chris Paul should “tear an achilles”, sit out this season, then declare himself fully healthy a week before free agency next summer
December 8th, 2011 at 10:41 PM
Pretty sure CP3 can take this to court, since if it really was for basketball reasons, league should have stepped in the midst of talks, not 3 hours after it was finalized.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:44 PM
queue the modern day slavery posts
December 8th, 2011 at 10:44 PM
Well at least the Lakers had a top 5 player on their roster for about an hour
December 8th, 2011 at 10:48 PM
What’s so fucking funny?
December 8th, 2011 at 10:49 PM
clearly the trade was stopped because it would make the kardashians less relevant than they are now.
it actually reminds me of a fantasy baseball league I am in where owners veto all trades if they aren’t getting the players involved.
December 8th, 2011 at 10:51 PM
So Howard to the Lakers is going to be vetoed too?
December 8th, 2011 at 11:01 PM
So wait, is the MLB the most properly functioning league now? Or is TBL not allowed to admit that?
December 8th, 2011 at 11:02 PM
So Howard to the Lakers is going to be vetoed too?
No. The League doesn’t own the Magic. That’s also probably why Paul doesn’t really have any legal recourse. I would think he NBA, as an owner, has every right to veto a trade that their GM made.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:04 PM
So wait, is the MLB the most properly functioning league now? Or is TBL not allowed to admit that?
It’s got the best commissioner, by far. Hard to argue that really. Who gives a fuck about turning a blind eye to steroids now? The NBA and NFL both have commissioners on a power trip.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:04 PM
Why don’t the lakers trade for Rondo?
December 8th, 2011 at 11:07 PM
Don’t know if TBL has mentioned this, but Stern’s reasoning for doing so was apparently because he “didn’t want Chris Paul to dictate where he went”. Huh? What a fucking moron, the guy is leaving in 8 months regardless.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:08 PM
Oh by the way, Der Kaiser. Re: your comments on the last post; I was trying to have a little fun by poking at TBL’s incessant NBA v. MLB march. But there is no need to resort to slurs. Seriously, I mean we all are adults who act like children, but let’s not act like homophobic children.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:13 PM
I laughed.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:19 PM
Rediculous… I thought the trade was pretty fair all around. Clippers signing Butler to that deal is even more rediculous.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:53 PM
Playoff spot? With that five? What world do you live in?
Even more so, I don’t see how you give up the best player in a trade, and you get back three guys who probably aren’t best suited as starters.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:54 PM
I won’t deny this, but that’s pretty funny considering how many people hate Selig.
December 8th, 2011 at 11:57 PM
How the fuck is the banhammer threatened for Rusty not liking a post, but this shit stands, TBL. This site can be a disgrace sometimes. I demand a press conference apology from DK.
/only half-joking
//seriously dude… anger management and tolerance
December 9th, 2011 at 12:04 AM
Last point I’ll raise this evening: did the NBA block the deal as the controlling interest (i.e. “the owners”) of the Hornets or as the arbiters/managers/guardians of the game (i.e. “the league”)? It may be semantics but the difference is major.
If Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton want to trade Drew Brees and Tom Benson stops it, he’s doing it as the owner — it’s his right to approve/block deals. If Roger Goodell tries to do it, he better have a good reason or he’s overstepping his boundary.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:15 AM
How the fuck is the banhammer threatened for Rusty not liking a post, but this shit stands, TBL. This site can be a disgrace sometimes. I demand a press conference apology from DK.
Because it wasn’t directed at TBL or his beloved Jets. If Der Kaiser had called the Jets a bunch of fags I’m sure TBL would have, if he noticed, had something to say to him. If DK had called TBL a fag….well we all saw what happened to Bulldog.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:19 AM
And for the record, Bulldog totally deserved it. It’s not as though he and TBL ever really got into it (as far as I know). He just decided one day that he was going to call TBL names (both homophobic and racist) for shits and grins, I guess.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:20 AM
Jesus, spare me the victim bullshit. You guys can be such sensitive bitches.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:23 AM
Der Kaiser’s a racist, homophobe, hater and a Nazi. A Nazi, this aggression shall not stand !
December 9th, 2011 at 12:24 AM
And I didn’t call anyone fags. Ive heard people in here call soccer fans fags or Nancy plenty of time without everyone getting their panties in a wad. I do the same with baseball, and everyone goes snitching to tbl. Unless you really think that I think all baseball fans are fags. In that case, that’s just idiotic. Quit taking everything so seriously and literally
December 9th, 2011 at 12:26 AM
Der Kaiser = Anti-Semite.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:27 AM
Der Kaiser, just shut up. As a fan of both baseball and soccer, I don’t really care for comparisons to be made between the two. So, in conclusion, just shut up.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:29 AM
You do realize the topic was dead and I had moved on before you guys decided to cry about it again, right?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:31 AM
Even more so, I don’t see how you give up the best player in a trade, and you get back three guys who probably aren’t best suited as starters.
That was the best offer the hornets were going to get, by far. They also would have gotten a #1 from Houston. now they’re fucked… Paul cant be traded to anyone now based on this precedent. Holy shit… WTF is stern thinking?
December 9th, 2011 at 12:34 AM
Owners really made a rash and emotional decision. Paul might sue, and I cant really blame him
December 9th, 2011 at 12:34 AM
One person brought up what you said. One person (me) responded to it in a way that was, if anything, directed more at TBL than you, and it was your response which caught Vlad’s attention. The topic being dead doesn’t mean what you originally said wasn’t idiotic. If you want people to think more highly of soccer, saying shit about another sport is hardly the way to go about doing that.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:36 AM
This is such garbage.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:38 AM
Two things I learned today. David stern is lot crueler of a man than I ever thought. And TBL commentariat is made up of delicate little flowers who’s delicate skin develops the most severe of bruise at the slightest hint of a wind.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:40 AM
Couldn’t agree more with Der Kaiser. Come back 6 months later and its the same butthurt tools day in and day out.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:40 AM
Fine, don’t listen to me you self-important dipshit.
I’m back to thesis writing. Night all.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:41 AM
Even more so, I don’t see how you give up the best player in a trade, and you get back three guys who probably aren’t best suited as starters.
Must not watch much NBA
December 9th, 2011 at 12:43 AM
Yikes, 3rd man agrees with me. Wow, maybe I did go over the line then.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:44 AM
…and the butthurt continues.
December 9th, 2011 at 12:57 AM
Did you guys read Dan Gilbert’s letter? Hilarious.
December 9th, 2011 at 1:12 AM
I approve of any/all comic sans jokes.
December 9th, 2011 at 1:42 AM
Dan Gilbert’s e-mail is hilarious, all comic sans jokes are ok, and Der Kaiser is a fucking retarded fag.
December 9th, 2011 at 1:46 AM
Derp derp derp! I’m gonna whine about whining by whining more than anyone else has whined before AND I’m gonna use a homo-phobic slur to boot! I’m Derp Kaiser! Seriously, shut the fuck up and never comment again. Sure, TBL has like a couple of your comments, but he has awful taste in everything.
December 9th, 2011 at 1:59 AM
Dude is soccer fan #1 when it comes to complaining about people insulting soccer, has trolled numerous baseball posts looking for reaction without getting any, and then when someone does suggest that he calm down (about a post that I assumed was intended as jokey exaggeration, but apparently he stands behind), he can’t believe how touchy the commenting section is.
I’m assuming he’s drunk (and I know you’re drunk, Ballz — as am I), and if so hopefully he realizes he’s been a dumbass tonight.
/ For the record I like baseball, soccer, and the NBA.
December 9th, 2011 at 2:01 AM
Also for the record, compare this:
With this:
December 9th, 2011 at 2:23 AM
How dare you assume that! (hiccups). And being drunk off of good old American whiskey >>>>> being drink off of……Riesling?
December 9th, 2011 at 2:45 AM
Oh, for goodness sakes. *being drunk off of……Riesling. Yáll know how it is.
December 9th, 2011 at 2:49 AM
I was trying to think of something clever to say about that comment, without even noticing your mortifying typo there. So yes, I guess I do know how it is. Now explain how in the fuck you got that thing over the A in yall.
December 9th, 2011 at 3:12 AM
David Stern might have saved Lamar Odom’s marriage.
December 9th, 2011 at 7:20 AM
Did I call it or what. Fuck Dan Gilbert, what a piece of shit. And people wonder why LeBron got the hell out and rubbed it in his face in the process.
http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2011/12/cleveland_cavaliers_owner_dan_4.html
December 9th, 2011 at 7:37 AM
All Dan Gilbert did was ask stern to put it to a vote
.
…but ya I’m sure ha has the power and control over stern and the league to block the trade on his own
/wanking motion
December 9th, 2011 at 8:06 AM
As bitchy as he sounds, Dan Gilbert made several salient points.
And if he owns 1/29th of the Hornets, he has an interest in not seeing them run into the ground, especially if it means the Lakers get to pay less of the luxury tax/revenue sharing that just got agreed upon.
December 9th, 2011 at 8:06 AM
All this shows is that the NBA owners were not ready to end the lockout. They saw that they were getting a lot of money back and Stern used that leverage to push for this abbreviated season that conveniently could begin on Christmas day. They completely ignored their whole thought process going in which is they wanted to instill some competitive balance and get more revenue back
Then the day that they actually ratify the new CBA, this trade goes down and a bunch of owners are caught staring at themselves saying ‘wait, thats right we were going to fix this shit’
David Stern overreacted to their reaction and completely fucked up everything. They should have taken their time and hammered out all these issues.
December 9th, 2011 at 8:17 AM
Except he’s comparing the salary over the next 3 years of 1 player who is currently due 16 million for the next 3 years (0 after this year) to 2 players who are due a combined 75 million.
So yes, the Lakers are “saving money” by taking on one player with an expiring contract and trading 2 players who are under contract.
December 9th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
Yeah, they’d have to max Paul out, and would pay the tax to do so. I agree with you and not me on that point.
December 9th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
This is a joke, and Stern is going to look like even more of a buffoon as the day goes on. He’s going to judge trades now? So if he blocked it on the merits of the trade itself as the “owner”, then what trade is going to be good enough? Why didn’t he step in earlier? Demps had the right to make trades on the teams behalf, with the league’s approval. Now it would be a disaster to let any other trade go through.
Chris Paul should stand up right now and say he will not re-sign anywhere else, and at the end of the year he is going to LA anyway, so Lakers please don’t trade any pieces for me. Keep Lamar and Pau and I’ll see you next year.
Plus Stern has bitched things up in LA as well. Odom is all pissed off now. What a colossal blunder this is.
December 9th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Was doubtful that I was going to have any interest in the NBA this season as it was…after this, zero chance I watch even one minute of an NBA game this year. The league is a joke, a farce, insert any other number of adjectives…
December 9th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
I’ve seen some Kevin Martin and Lamar Odom, and I think both guys do far better when they are not starting or carrying a big offensive load through the whole game. Is Luis Scola a legit starter on a 50-win team? He’s the one I don’t know much about…
