Tim McCarver Wins the Ford C. Frick Award For Broadcast Excellence
Tim McCarver has wowed fans recently with his spelling acumen, with educating us about things we learned in 2nd grade baseball. Our very own Tim Ryan has suggested he should probably be done butchering World Series broadcasts.
So yes, this announcement that Tim McCarver is the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award Winner for Broadcast Excellence has led to lots of online angst, but keep in mind that, even though the Ford C. Frick committee may very well be trolling us for more page views, this is a career award, and they only give it to someone once. The award began in 1978, with Mel Allen and Red Barber. Vin Scully got his back in 1982.
So even though McCarver needs to stop broadcasting World Series games, there is no doubt that he had a long career as a broadcaster, served as a very good announcer for the Mets and Yankees, and has called many big games. According to MLB, “Frick Award voters consider a number of criteria, including longevity, continuity with a club, honors, national assignments such as the World Series and All-Star Games, and popularity with fans.”
So congratulations, Tim McCarver. It was a great honor to receive after you called your last World Series game.

Sort of like paying the playoffs?

If, and ONLY if, this allows McCarver to retire peacefully immediately, then I will graciously applaud this award.
Otherwise, it is the biggest MF’ing farce on the face of the Earth.

To celebrate, Deion dumped a cup of Haterade over McCarver’s head.

“His wit and intuition, combined with his passion for the game and his down-home style, delivers a trusted insight for viewers. Tim’s journey in reaching baseball broadcasting’s highest honor has connected generations of New York Mets fans as well as audiences across the country for more than 30 years.”

Sandusky charged with more counts against two new boys/men.
Burn him now. He’s not getting a $100k bail this time..

You mean the guy who thought the word “strike” was a 5 letter word won this award? Sounds about right.

I’m not terribly sure how/why he was released on bail to begin with.

Put Sandusky on suicide watch. That dude is fucked.

Things that are better than a Tim McCarver broadcast:
Communism, Tim Tebow, the Kardashians, HIV
December 7th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
I take issue with Kardashians being on this list. But Jersey Shore can replace it.
December 7th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Craig James sees nothing wrong with McCarver winning the award…in fact, he expects to win it himself one day.

Yep, it appears so. The news blew up while I was at lunch.
So my team is back to being fucked now, as we’re going to lose pretty much the entire class we had committed.

Didn’t the judge that bailed him out sit on the 2nd Mile board? I’ve truly tried to quit reading about it.

Any MTV production will suffice.

I consider Buck and McCarver a disgrace to my hometown.
In all seriousness though, I’m not old enough to remember McCarver in the 1980s. Was he actually good then?

That just reminds me how much ESPN is missing without Charlie STeiner.
December 7th, 2011 at 3:14 PM
Nationally? No. He was still arrogant and grating on the ears. There was virtually no scrutiny on announcers then, so he carried on with a free pass to idiocy.
I can’t comment on his local stuff because I didn’t get to hear him daily (thank God).
December 7th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Don’t count on the Chipster being back in Eugene. It sounds like the crap may be hitting the fan on the Ducks something fierce… and very soon.

I liked it when he was criticizing Gary Sheffield’s swing during an All-Star game and just as he was finished talking Sheffield hit a bomb into the left field stands
