The Miami Marlins Offer to Albert Pujols is Reportedly Now 10 Years [UPDATE]
It’s a tweeting bonanza at the MLB winter meetings in Dallas and so far, it’s all about the Miami Marlins. After landing Jose Reyes and Heath Bell, the team has shifted its focus to Albert Pujols and have reportedly upped their offer to a ridiculous 10 years. No dollar amount has been floated just yet, but didn’t we all learn something from the obscene A-Rod-Yankee deal? This would essentially be the same scenario, bringing the diaper-wearing slugger to the age of 41 in the final year of the contract.
Regardless of whether the offer makes sense – it doesn’t – the Cardinals are nervous. Pujols’ agent and renowned party boy, Dan Lozano, met with the Marlins twice yesterday and is scheduled to meet with them again today.
It’s of my expert opinion (read: hunch) that the St. Louis Cardinals are screwed.
[UPDATE: Bob Nightengale of the USA Today tweeted that the offer is said to be in excess of $200 million. Since Pujols wasn't pleased with the Cardinals offer of $22 million a year before the season, I'm guessing the Marlins offer is somewhere around $250 million to make that per year salary a little easier on the eyes.]

So they are at 10yrs $250? Wow!
December 6th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
/fixed
December 6th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Actually, I think they’ll luck out by not having to overpay here.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Dumb.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Miami is going after ticket sales and luxury suite buys. Even if Pujols sucks in 6 years, they’ll make a killing off of signing him with their new stadium opening up.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Please sign Pujols and become the baseball “Dream Team”.
Who the hell is going to pitch for them?
/aware that dimensons of new stadium are bigger than Petco
December 6th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Seriously?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Even if Pujols sucks in 6 years, they’ll make a killing off of signing him with their new stadium opening up.
If he sucks in 6 years at the age of 42, they will probably suck in 6 years and the park will be empty. Then what?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
needs a “/Tom Hicks” tag, right?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
aware that dimensions of new stadium are bigger than Petco
Seriously?
I have not heard this. Would be surprising, that park looked pretty intimate when I saw some pictures of it from the inside.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Make a splash, why dontcha. What are the denizens of St Lou saying about the Marlins’ offer?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I believe brad penny is available
December 6th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
As a Cardinals fan, STL should not match a 10 year deal. 8/$200M would be my top offer which is even too much.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
3 years 100 million. Short contract but you he will be the highest paid player in the game for those 3 years. It should compensate for his bitching about the short contract
December 6th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Pujols sounds like he won’t sign without a no trade clause. Which means Miami better hope that the NL adopts the DH because by the end of the 10 yrs they will be paying $25 mil a yr for a pinch hitter.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
has Loranzo been slipping date rape drugs into Loria’s drinks?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
It should compensate for his bitching about the short contract
He’d never sign a 3 year deal.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Yeah, I saw on fangraphs or baseball prospectus an overlay of the dimensons of the new Miami stadium and Petco, and Miami’s new stadium is about 10 feet deeper in left and at least 8 feet deeper in center than Petco.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
he will only need the no trade clause up until the 5th year. after that he can veto any trade regardless
December 6th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Miami wants to get latino star players, and landing Reyes and Pujols would do just that. I don’t think they should do it as the back end will kill them (as many have stated) but I definitely see their thought process here. It’s a money grab in conjunction with the new stadium.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Dumb da duh duh dumb.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
STL could manage without him. Move Berkman to first and get Craig and Freese a few more AB’s. You also have Wainwright coming back. Then, there will probably be another big-time 1B free-agent in a year or two (Votto?) that would be a bit cheaper than Pujols.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
oh i know. i think if you can get more quality years then its all gravy. I’d just have a hard time giving him the contract
December 6th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
This right here.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Sounds like Albert is moving up, he will be playing in front of coke heads rather than meth heads
December 6th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
The last thing I want to see is Albert Pujols 19 times because he now plays in my team’s division. Fuck that noise.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Albert’s psyched.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
STL could manage without him
Yeah, if I were a Cardinal fan and had electricity hooked up to my trailer in order to follow these negotiations, I would be pissed if they offered him more than 8 years anyway.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
TL could manage without him. Move Berkman to first and get Craig and Freese a few more AB’s.
That would work in the short term, but Berkman isn’t getting any younger. He had a resurgence last year but he’s still got a gimpy knee (which is why a move to first would actually be great for him) and probably only 2-3 productive years at most left in him.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Wholeheartedly disagree. They are not selling that place out. Not happening in that town.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Ah yes, good point about his 10/5 rights. Cardinal fans should actually rejoice that another team is dumb enough to overpay so much.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
I think the best part of the beginning of next season is going to be the unremitting mockery of the Marlins’ new colors and uniforms.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Agreed. Although Phillies/Braves will be seeing Harper 19x a year by 2013.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Miami is going after ticket sales and luxury suite buys. Even if Pujols sucks in 6 years, they’ll make a killing off of signing him with their new stadium opening up.
This right here.
Color me skeptical that the park will be full after year 1 if they aren’t contending. They’re in the same division as the Braves and Phillies, so it’s not like its guaranteed they’ll win it every year even with Reyes (who is injury prone) and Pujols. They need pitching.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I don’t even think they need to sell out. The luxury suites should be enough.
/works for the Yankees
December 6th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Johnson, Sanchez, Nolasco.
Hell, Volstad’s decent.
Very solid 1-4, then they fill it out with whatever 5th starter they can find.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
The last thing I want to see is Albert Pujols 19 times because he now plays in my team’s division. Fuck that noise.
One of the few things I like about the Astros moving to the AL in 2013 is not having to play that asshat multiple times a year.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Must be better on the ball flying farther due heat & humidity
December 6th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I think you might be right, but they have to do everything in their power to try, don’t they?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Hell, Volstad’s decent.
NO. No he’s not. Johnson is the only legit starter.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Ryan Howard’s contract isnt looking nearly so bad now, eh guys?
/still bad
December 6th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Wholeheartedly disagree. They are not selling that place out. Not happening in that town.
I agree with Hair. They might sell out a few games at the start of next year, but by July that place will be struggling to pull in 20,000 a night.

December 6th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Ten bucks says it’s Livan Hernandez.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
I think you might be right, but they have to do everything in their power to try, don’t they?
Spending like a drunken sailor is not the way to build winning team. They had one of the top SS in the league and they go out and spend $100MM on Reyes.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
How about that lineup though if they do sign Pujols. Adding Pujols and Reyes to Ramirez(if they keep him), Stanton and LoMo.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
No. This is very wrong. Say what you will about Volstad, but Nolasco and Sanchez are good.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Hell, Volstad’s decent.
NO. No he’s not. Johnson is the only legit starter.
Maybe so, but every time I saw Volstad against the Nats, he looked pretty solid. Big guy with a nasty breaking pitch when it’s on.
/FWIW
December 6th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I don’t think a new stadium alone will help ticket sales beyond a year or so. They needed some star players, too. I think they’re fighting an up-hill battle, but at least they’re trying to improve the team. Better than many other professional teams.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Fascinating. I wonder if this will dissuade potential power hitting free agents (Pujols) from signing there.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
I can not believe that is real.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
/nods at Dan Snyder.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Didn’t anybody learn a lesson from the Dream Team?
Miami is the best sports town in America!
/when you have 3 of the 10 top players
//allegdly
December 6th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
So, if the Marlins sign Pujols, and the Braves and Phils are already good teams, and the Nats are possibly up-and-coming, when does the obligatory Mets’ knee-jerk reaction signing take place?
Shouldn’t they overpay for Pat Burrell or Brad Hawpe or someone similar?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Yeah, the humidity will help, but big field, is still a big field. Reyes should when healthy put up 20+ triples a year.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Sanchez: 3.67 ERA
Nolasco: 4.67 ERA
Good? That’s a stretch.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
I’m not sure I buy it, especially for the somewhat aloof (generously) fan base in Miami. A mediocre team without a lot of experienced pitching.. somehow they are going to fill the seats and sell every box in a weak economy? I think Pujols may end up owning half the team by 2017 instead of getting paychecks.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Give it a year, they’ll do like Detroit did with Comerica and set up a new fence ten feet closer.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Dan Snyder spends the same amount of money as every other NFL owner.
If Dan Snyder owned a baseball team, he’d spend a bajillion dollars to bring Arod, Soriano, and Barry Zito to town.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Give it a year, they’ll do like Detroit did with Comerica and set up a new fence ten feet closer.
Mets are bringing in their fences as well.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Okay… so Hernia beat me to it, but yeah put me in the camp where we doubt those boxes and seats are filled in 2013.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Get him out of the NL Central. That’s all I care about. Same with Princess Chunk.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Good? That’s a stretch
Sanchez 3.35 FIP
Nolasco 3.54 FIP
ERA is useless.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
ERA is useless.
Okay.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
White Sox just acquired a mystery Molina.

/Anxiously awaits the monster seasons from Nolasco and Sanchez next year
//Not holding my breath
December 6th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
\
No, it’s not useless. It’s just less useful than FIP. Hell, you should use xFIP, which is even better.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Agree 100%. But I say you put him there for 2 years and then acquire a top 1B when that time comes. That guy will probably be a helluva lot cheaper than Pujols.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
/nods at Fetch
December 6th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Now with more Vitamin-R!
December 6th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Shift the argument a little more, please.
First, they have no pitching.
Then, no legit pitching.
Now, they don’t have anyone that will be a monster.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
Is there a “good” pitcher with an ERA over 4?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:54 PM
First, they have no pitching.
Then, no legit pitching.
Same thing.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Well, they are both good but not great pitchers so I doubt you will see monster seasons out of them. Unless you believe pitcher wins are relevant, because that lineup will score some runs.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
As long as it keeps Poo-holes away from PNC Park that is fine with me. That dude kills the Pirates (everyone does though).
In 354 ABS at PNC he has 29 HR, 133 Hits, .376 AVG, 1.170 OPS
December 6th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
any team that gives albert more than 5 years is absolutely stupid. St. Louis will be better off in the long run without him.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
goooosh
December 6th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Chris Volstad is a huge ball of useless

hmm…how do you feel about Jack Morris?
/career ERA 3.90
December 6th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
That’s like Berkman against the Reds at GABP.
.325 .442 .739 1.181
December 6th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
VS Pirates (total): .365 .451 .681 1.131
@PNC: .376 .452 .718 1.170
So Pujols only does marginally better (though definitely a little better, and probably enough of a sample size to be signficant) at PNC than vs. the Pirates at home… he just likes to hit against crappy pitching.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Amazed it took 60+ comments to have a stat fight in a baseball post.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:00 PM

December 6th, 2011 at 1:00 PM

December 6th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
Go DIAF.
Who does he play for?
December 6th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Wow…Wasn’t aware of that. It looks to be a significant move. Runs may increase quite a bit.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:02 PM
Go at Rusty… he’s still on double secret probation from the Lord of the Banhammer
December 6th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
he just likes to hit against crappy pitching.
Who wouldnt. I heard a story that in the locker room at PNC there is a “Top Ten HR’s at PNC Park” chart and for a certain period of time Pujous was 10th. That’s embarrassing.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:04 PM

shit, Ron Santo is now in, might as well let anyone in.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Mean, but very funny.
The thing about Bautista was that he wasn’t even good as a Pirate so his crazy success afterwards I can’t be upset about. I seriously doubt he would have developed that way with the Buccos. Giving away Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill was pretty upsetting.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:25 PM
I find it hard to root for the Pirates after Brandon Lyon/Jeff Suppan for Freddy Sanchez (my favorite Red Sox minor leaguer at the time).
/how’s Brandon Moss working out for you though?
//laughs
December 6th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
I know I’ve told this story before, but I wrote an arbitration brief for the Pirates’ general counsel on Bautista and had to do really deep analysis on his compared to similar players. Based on that I refuse to believe that fucker is not cheating somehow, he was a below average player his entire career and then suddenly boom. Fuck him.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:40 PM
/how’s Brandon Moss working out for you though?
I believe he was on the Phillies and then signed by the A’s (checks wiki—– yes.)

I certainly hope the Marlins sign Pujols to a 10-year deal, then watch him bloat into a poo hole almost immediately and have to deal with the aftermath.

December 6th, 2011 at 2:15 PM
No one has a problem with Hernia including this? In his 10th year of that contract, Alex Rodriguez, though missing 60 games, still played pretty well. He won 3 MVPs and led the league in HRs 5 out of those 10 years.
December 6th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
“In his 10th year of that contract?” Que? I’m taking about his current 10-year deal that will take him to age 42.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:03 PM
This deal, signed at 32: http://www.aolnews.com/2007/11/14/report-a-rod-about-to-finalize-10-year-275-million-deal-with/
Six years left.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:13 PM
I love the update so the author could “guess the offer is around $250M”.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:17 PM
My apologies. I thought you were referring to the first 10 year deal he signed. The most recent one was a 6 year extension to his previous deal, no?
December 6th, 2011 at 3:21 PM
The update was Nightengale’s report, sweetie.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:23 PM
I thought he had three left when he opted out during the Red Sox-Rockies World Series game. But essentially, yeah, it was those remaining years reworked with a sprinkle or two, and the additional six or seven years bringing it 10.
December 6th, 2011 at 3:31 PM
Agreed. The extension was dumber than Einstein.
December 6th, 2011 at 6:12 PM
Look at the number of elite season the top 20 hitters in history had after age 37. Not many. And certainly not many with Pujols’s body type. A 10 year contract with an AAV of 20M+ would be a complete disaster for any team that signs it. The Cardinals are better off letting him walk. You’ll lose 3-6 years of elite production. But after that, not so much.
