Reeves Nelson Isn’t Kicked Off the UCLA Basketball Team, He’s Just Suspended Again
It might seem as if I’m taking glee in the debacle that has been the UCLA basketball season, but the Bruins are certainly generating plenty of headlines, and it’s not for their play on the court.
The latest mishap: Reeves Nelson, a malcontent who happens to be their best player, was suspended by coach Ben Howland. Again. That’s two suspensions and the season isn’t a month old. One report had Nelson kicked off the team, but that was incorrect. (Well, as of now, at least.) I don’t think this is even an NIT team right now.

When Bill Walton, Ed O’Bannon, or Cameron Dollar return to Westwood, wake me, until then, isn’t Oregon State the best hoops team in the Pac-12?

Goodness. He looks like a criminal.

Does Barry Janoff still work here? Has he been pushed to the right rail in perpetuity?
I know you don’t often take any input from your readers (unless the mobile site is truly just a 3-year project), but this was a great move.

TBL take glee at something like this? Never

It’s sad how far down UCLA has gone. To me, a strong UCLA team draws attention to other teams and players. In the old days, if you played well against UCLA, you were considered legit.
Now, this Nelson fella isn’t much different from Stephen Garcia, albeit from a different sport. Erratic behavior, distracting a program.
Just get rid of Nelson already.

If Ben Howland gets fired, he won’t have to wait long for a job. He’s a good coach.

so the two main revenue sports at ucla suck, unless they have beach volleyball

College basketball would be better if we could just take the top 2 teams and have them play in a championship game and let everyone else have lesser exhibition games for people to go to. I think it would really help the quarter-full arenas the first two rounds of the tournament.

Asians don’t play sports (well).

I’m for it. OSU would’ve been in the NC last year and most likely again this year.
December 6th, 2011 at 4:04 PM
It would ensure a worthy champion, increase revenue, and would eliminate crappy unknown teams advancing that kill ratings, which is the most important metric for CBB’s success, obviously.

If I’m Howland, I would go Moneyball on Nelson. You could probably replicate Nelson’s production with other players, and excise the cancer of Nelson’s attitude from your roster. What is the real cost of his bad attitude around your program?
Let Nelson transfer to some school (Texas-Pan American, Canisus, BIOLA, etc.) who would take him and let him jack up a ton of shots. He still gets to become a second round pick in the Association.
/not meant to belittle the schools mentioned above, just making a point

Let’s just pencil in Duke each year for the title game, then rotate in Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC as the other championship team. Teams like George Mason and Gonzaga play in lesser conferences so they have no legitimate reason to be on the same court as these other teams.

Questionable. His strengths as a coach < being a real asshole. He recruited a few friends up here in Gauchoville in the 90's and needless to say, he wears his kids down in a hurry.
