Larry Fedora to UNC? A Former Tar Heels’ Player Says It is Happening Today [UPDATE]
Will Larry Fedora be the next North Carolina football coach? That’s what former UNC linebacker Mark Paschal just tweeted. Paschal said the announcement will come later today.
Fedora coached Southern Mississippi to an 11-2 record and Conference USA title this season. He’s rumored to be in the mix for several college football openings – Texas A&M, Ole Miss (before they landed Hugh Freeze), Illinois and to a lesser extent Arizona State.
Most of the UNC scuttlebutt so far has centered around Alabama assistant Kirby Smart and Auburn assistant Gus Malzahn. But nothing credible has emerged about any candidate. New UNC AD Bubba Cunningham is playing this one very close to the vest.
If you’re wondering about the credibility of Paschal and whether or not he’s plugged into the program, he had dinner with former UNC QB TJ Yates Sunday night following the Texans’ win over the Falcons. Paschal was a 2nd team All-ACC linebacker at UNC in 2008. [H/T Joe]
[UPDATE: Inside Carolina is now also reporting Larry Fedora will be UNC's next coach. Still no confirmation from anyone, though.]
[UPDATE: Now, Inside Carolina says that is not an accurate portrayal of its report. What then, exactly, is Inside Carolina saying? I have no idea.]
[UPDATE: Football Rumor Mill is claiming that Fedora will "likely" accept the UNC job.]
[UPDATE: Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun says Larry Fedora is UNC's new coach.]

Southern Miss has a reputable program and probably the best program in Mississippi. It’s a shame they can’t join the Big East because their television market isn’t good enough for them.

That might lend credibility, but having dinner with a former player doesn’t necessarily equate with ‘plugged in’.

Dan Tricorne to UCLA.

UNC isn’t a horrible job. The fans just don’t care that much about football. That culture is starting to change a little bit though.

@Cowboy Mike
I didn’t know you write for ATD? You guys post some good stuff on there. Just one question; is Liverpool that fucking schizophrenic? They’ve had some good wins, and some horrible losses to teams they have no business losing to.
I’ll hang up and listen.

UNC is a horrible job.
Not quite as bad as being the basketball coach at Auburn.
I think it’s a good spot for him – easy conference, a few good athletes in NC, poach some in Tenn, VA, and SC. Nice fit.

James Sombrero to Arizona State
December 6th, 2011 at 11:53 AM

Does that still exist?

I like how Moleman is now referred to as Cowboy Mike.

This might be the funniest thing I’ve ever read in a post on this site. “Want to know if this guy is tapped into the program? Well he had dinner with an NFL QB who went there the other night. Draw your own conclusions.”

Lacking lethal finishing, everyone but Suarez is fucking snakebit. Still furious at his goal getting waived off yesterday.

Larry Fedora & Hugh Freeze sound like they should be the lead characters in a TNT show about cops. Freeze & Fedora : TNT Knows Drama
Two former wise guys learn how to turn the tables on the the mob and the casinos. Larry Fedora & Hugh Freeze star in The F Men – a TNT orginal; TNT knows drama.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
If he doesn’t wear a Fedora on the sideline that is all sorts of FAIL.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Oh how Gus Malzahn’s star must have fallen. Is he a bad interview?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Other than being in a shit market, isn’t the Southern Miss job a lot better than UNC’s right now? I guess UNC’s has a higher ceiling, but still…
December 6th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
So Arizona State, Kansas, UCLA, Texas A&M, Illinois and Penn State are left. Am I missing someone?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:11 PM

Mississippi makes any job worse.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Lacking lethal finishing
Yeah, I suppose it happens when Kuyt’s your primary striker. Suarez has been worth every penny, though.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
So is everything going into moderation?
So Arizona State, Kansas, UCLA, Texas A&M, Illinois and Penn State are left. Am I missing someone? Also, how has Gus Malzahn’s star fallen so much? Is he a bad interview?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
how has Gus Malzahn’s star fallen so much? Is he a bad interview?
Probably not. But his wife is.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
It’s funny, but some people were arguing that her interview didn’t hurt him. They could very well be right, but there is no way in hell it’s helping him. And as Clown pointed out on Twitter, it sure seemed like Cam hit that.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I’ve heard his name mention with the Kansas job, but that’s about it.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Did not know that Kansas gave Turner the axe. Should never have let the fat man go.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Shouldn’t Fedora and not Les Miles be known as The Hat?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Same here. If Kansas is all you can get when there are this many openings, that’s not a good sign for him at all. AUB should be pretty stacked next year, though, so a good season and he might be back into contention for some good jobs. Though if Mullen leaves for Penn State, maybe Miss State goes after him. That would make sense based on what each guy does offensively.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
God dammit. UGA offered some kid who ditched Florida because they’re are rumors of the No. 1 speed back picking Clemson later today. That would fucking suck.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Cleet – fair point. laugh away.
a few people have said Paschal is his agent. that’s unconfirmed.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
UNC is a bball school and always will be, but the fans will follow them if they start having success. Chapel Hill is a great place to live. BCS conference, and one that is usually up for grabs at that (VIRGINA had a chance at the division FFS). Not to mention the budget and the higher visibility. If you succeed in fball at UNC it’s like succeeding at Florida in bball, and that hasn’t been bad for Donovan.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Plus you get first crack at all the moron athletes from Durham who can’t qualify for Notre Dame academically.

December 6th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
TBL, I know you take a lot of ridicule just from being the man behind the site. Comes with the territory. Sometimes it turns into piling on, but that just struck me as funny.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Stephen Pork-Pie to Notre Dame
Nah, Brian Asshat remains in power there.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
The main point is that – intenally, UNC is committed to joining the arms race in football. They went in big with Butch Davis but it didn’t work, but they want UNC football to be an ACC power. They will commit some resources that other schools cannot or will not. Whether that comes to fruition is another matter.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
He shouldve left when Cam did.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Notre Dame.
And shortly after, Oklahoma.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Hey Husker – based on Crowell’s season, especially the last three “diva” weeks, uga should get the pick of the best of the surrounding states. Crowell may be going the way of caleb king.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:10 PM
No. He just had a bad QB – or three – this year.
December 6th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
He’s done well elsewhere with serviceable QBs. Prior to Cam, he made Chris Todd, who is a stone back there, look competent.
I cannot emphasize enough how terrible Auburn’s two upperclassmen QBs were. Should Malzahn have taught them more? Maybe. But both were products of late Tommy Tuberville recruiting, and probably had more business starting at somewhere like Samford.
