USA Today Coaches Poll Ballots Released: Coaches Liked Alabama, One Coach Had Oklahoma State Ranked 5th
USA Today released the ballot database for the final coaches poll that factored into the BCS Standings. This poll, featuring voters with the most bias and the least ability to watch a broad swath of games, largely decides which team plays for the BCS title. Here are some votes we found notable.
Coaches Who Voted Oklahoma State (No. 2): David Baliff (Rice), Tim Beckman (Toledo, former OSU DC), Bret Bielema (Wisc), Art Briles (Bay), Dave Christensen (Wyoming), Sonny Dykes (LaTech), John Embree (Colorado), Larry Fedora (So. Miss), Al Golden (Miami), Mark Hudspeth (LL), Bronco Mendenhall (BYU), Jeff Quinn (Buffalo), Paul Rhoades (ISU), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), Jeff Tedford (Cal), Tommy Tuberville (TT) and Ron Zook (Unemployed).
Coaches Who Did Not Vote Oklahoma State in Top Three: Troy Calhoun (Air Force) had Oklahoma State ranked 5th behind Alabama, Stanford and Arkansas. Five coaches – David Cutcliffe (Duke), Doug Marone (Cuse), Gary Pinkel (Mizzou), NICK SABAN (Alabama), David Shaw Stanford – had OSU ranked fourth.
Outliers
* Mark Richt ranked Oregon eighth, behind his SEC brethren Arkansas and South Carolina.
* No one pulled a Craig James on Boise State, though Todd Berry (La-Monroe) had them 13th and three SEC coaches – James Franklin, Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier – had them ranked 11th.
* Art Briles is not a Wisconsin fan. He ranked the Badgers 16th. Only one other voter had them below 10th. He had Michigan, who missed the title game, ranked five places ahead of them.
* Les Miles is still a Michigan man at heart. He ranked his alma-mater 8th. Here’s how he ranked teams that could have knocked them out of the top 14: Kansas State (17), Baylor (19) and TCU (21).
* Clemson beat Virginia Tech by three scores, twice. Coaches weren’t that impressed. Larry Fedora had VaTech 9th and Clemson 22. Pete Lemb had VaTech 9th and Clemson 19th. Kyle Whittingham had VaTech 12th and Clemson 22nd.

Gene Chizik voted Bama too – and should be fired for it.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
NICK SABAN (Alabama)
Should he have Alabama unranked? It is in his best interestes to have Alabama 1st or 2nd, I dont really see hwo you could blame him.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I know it’s shocking to think that Nick Saban believes his team is better than every other team, except the only team he lost to.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
That’s a little ridiculous. Props I guess to Saban for not ranking OSU 20th or something though.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Did they text their rankings in, like American Idol?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Why doesn’t Gundy get a vote?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
I love that we still pretend that any of the coaches actually filled these things out themselves.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Well done.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Why didn’t Gundy vote?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Four guys had OSU at 6th in the Harris Poll. Whomp whomp.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I know it’s shocking to think that anbody associated with the Alabama program believes their team is better than every other team, except the only team they lost to.

He doesn’t have a vote.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
Whoa — no way
December 5th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
I get the matchup argument and VaTech might actually be the better team and they just don’t match well with Clemson, but if you put VaTech 9th you cannot put Clemson 22nd.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
St. Bear is Cowboy Mike?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
only some coaches have a vote. How or why they are given one is beyond me
December 5th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Guess Richt doesn’t like faggy offenses. God does hate them, after all.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
Fucking bullshit the conference collusion between coaches and the system that creates incentives to foolish or disengenous rankings. Fucking SEC coaches voting the ‘party line’.
Also Michigan vs Vt bowl should be renamed “We the BCS do not give a fuck how nakedly corrupt we appear and your going to watch this game or what talk to your family? Do not make us laugh, you poor fucks better buy another foam finger too”
December 5th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Oh my God. I cant stop laughing.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Apparently.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
How much of a factor does this have on final BCS numbers?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
So true. I bet Mark Richt, gutted after pissing away his chance at the SEC title, sat down and really worked hard on his coaches’ ballot. Pouring over stats and watching film took hours I bet.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
The BCS brainwashing has some hilarious and terrifying side effects.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Why didn’t Gundy vote?
He doesn’t have a vote.
Somehow, I had no clue about this. Play the Payoffs!
December 5th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
1/3 of the formula.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I never really thought about how ridiculous that is until right now.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
People paid to be highly competitive individuals that motivate 80-something other young individuals voted that their competitors were better than other competitors.
Story at 11.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
The AP had MSU ahead of Michigan. The coaches had Michigan ahead of MSU.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
No. You can’t be the better team when you get waxed twice by the same team, one at home and the other at a neutral site. Sorry. That’s simply not possible.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
None of these are as bad as Phil Fulmer’s 1997 ballot.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
The horror! Almost like if you wanted to not be subject to polls, you should win all your games.
On the other hand, it’s fun to tweak Bama fans on facebook. They get REALLY mad if you suggest they played a weaker schedule or didn’t deserve it.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
This. It is someone in their fball offices who knows where they should vote to get the advantage to their team/conference, plus some votes for spite’s sake.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
NICK SABAN (Alabama)
not as bad as Mizzou leaving with a parting shot across the Big XII bow.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
How much of a factor does this have on final BCS numbers?
1/3 of the formula.
Wow. That’s funny.
/This one’s for all the TOSTITOS’d
December 5th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
4th is about right for Saban to put them. It’s just self-serving enough without being horrific (like putting them tenth).
December 5th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
I’m sure someone’s done the work I’m too lazy to do, but how much does the final tally change if Saban/Pinkel aren’t assholes and put Okie State at 3 instead of 4?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
No worries, we only have to wait 5 weeks for this game to be played. I’m sure both teams will come out playing sharp.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Don’t think Alabama being in is a huge travesty but its just enough to ruin a monday morning
December 5th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
The ridiculous part is that not every coach is given the chance to do this. This whole thing is a fucking farce.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Anybody else excited for the Interim Coach Bowl, aka The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, featuring 6-7 UCLA vs. 6-6 Illinois?
December 5th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
Just read up on this, wow he voted Michigan 4th and help split the National Championship out of Heisman (Charles Woodson) spite. What the fuck. It’s a tribute to how great college football is on the field for so many to put up with an unbelievable amount of bullshit off the field.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
WOW!
https://twitter.com/#!/DetSportsGuy/status/143717824161005568
December 5th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
The ridiculous part is they have a vote, period. They have so much at stake, that shady voting is a given. Add to it that they are too fucking busy doing their actual job that it should be a no-brainer to have them go elsewhere.
Of course then you see the Harris Poll and you laugh just as much as you do with the coaches’ poll.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I don’t want Bama in the game, I don’t think Bama’s resume is as good as OSU, but they’re in it. As long as RGIII wins the Heisman, I’m good going forward.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
LSU is going to run up the score. I’m thinking 15-9.

Ineligible. Nebraska is the true 1997 National Champion.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Would USC be ranked if not for the probation? I think the answer would be YES but I’d like to hear other sources
December 5th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I pray the title game is an equally lame 9-6 affair.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I wish I could find it on the internet – back in 2004, when it was Auburn vs Oklahoma in the big game, Mike Stoops would support his brother by voting Auburn 7th or so.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I forget which game I was watching that he broadcast over the weekend, but at one point he started a sentence referencing his ballot and all I could think of was that post and how awful his ballot was to begin with.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
And that was in the Harris poll, which is another 1/3 of the formula.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Absolutely. Top 10 for sure.

That must’ve been a mistake? Or did he fill it out before Saturday?
December 5th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
PSU’s game with Houston will likely be same.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
It will be a more open game. It has to be, for one thing, and now they know for a fact that a win gets them a title. The first game was more about survival, so each team played very conservatively save for one trick play by Bama. I think this one is 20-17 or something like that.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
It could be worse. As of 2008, Jerry Sandusky still had a Harris Poll vote.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Red Sox now getting into the whole sexual abuse game. Sickos.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:06 AM

Jesus, SC hyping Rodger’s “clutchness” is driving me batty. He’s the best QB in the league. He’s really good. Why are we surprised he’s also really good at the end of games?

December 5th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
So what do you think about the opinion that Danielson was spouting Saturday night that LSU should get the AP title minimum if they lose to Alabama?
I think it depends on how bad Alabama wins, if they win at all.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:09 AM

December 5th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Shocking.
/There’s no way in hell LSU should get a split championship in that scenario
December 5th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Seems the BCS prefers to schedule the established teams against each other and leave the up and coming against lesser known teams. This makes it difficult for the entrenched teams to fall and keeps the lesser known teams/cup and coming teams out of the spotlight.
/See BSU vs TCU last year, Baylor vs Washington, OK ST vs Stanford..

December 5th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
/There’s no way in hell LSU should get a split championship in that scenario
Why not? LSU and Bama would have identical records. And if it’s a close game, all it says is that the best 2 teams were LSU and Bama.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I agree, I would not be surprised if both teams get in the 20′s. I htink the score in 2010 was 24-21 LSU. It’s all or nothing for Bama, so expect more shots downfield. Prediction O/U 47.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
The title is a one-off. The BCS is designed to pair No. 1 vs No. 2. The previous 12 games should be forgotten and the only result that matters (for those two teams) is the title game.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
It’s kinda like saying Georgetown should have split the basketball NC with Villanova. I’m torn. Part of me thinks we already beat them. On the road. And even though LSU has an advantage in the Superdome, it’s still going to probably be something like a 60-70 to 30-40 split than a flat out home field advantage. Tuscaloosa is only about a 4 hour drive, I believe.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
The title is a one-off. The BCS is designed to pair No. 1 vs No. 2. The previous 12 games should be forgotten and the only result that matters (for those two teams) is the title game.
but…but…but…EVERY weekend matters!
December 5th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
You’re only torn because you’re a fan of LSU. If Bama wins, they’re the champs. If LSU wins, they’ll cap the most impressive BCS era run (by far).
December 5th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Seems like the coaches did a better job with their ballots than some of the Harris voters…Duffy Tweeted about someone who had Auburn 18th and Georgia unranked
The BCS as a system isn’t all that bad but when you consider the dipshits they let put the title game together it’s the dumbest postseason in sports…used to fall on the other side of this debate but this year is just too stupid to defend
December 5th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Why didn’t Gundy vote?
I think you have to be 40 years old.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
You can’t champion the BCS as a system determined to declare a national champion and pit #1 v #2 against each other at all costs and then ignore the result from the game. Alabama shouldn’t be in the game, but they are. If they win they should be ranked ahead of LSU.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Yes. No denying that.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Pretty sure up and coming TCU played and beat established Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl last year.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Coach K already had the wins record, he just had that one season wiped because he had the bad back (and they had a bad record).
December 5th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
You’re only torn because you’re a fan of LSU. If Bama wins, they’re the champs. If LSU wins, they’ll cap the most impressive BCS era run (by far).
It’s easier to explain if you say that both teams qualified for a 2 team/ one game playoff.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Coach K already had the wins record, he just had that one season wiped because he had the bad back (and they had a bad record).
Probably my favorite little nugget on coach K. Guy preaches team and family, but he has a bad year and bails.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
You can’t champion the BCS as a system determined to declare a national champion and pit #1 v #2 against each other at all costs and then ignore the result from the game. Alabama shouldn’t be in the game, but they are. If they win they should be ranked ahead of LSU.
they’re going to play a game to determine the title winner, and the title will be won by the team who wins this game. It’s a playoff game.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
LSU has such an inferiority complex with Alabama, and that goes for me too. I would go into a personal funk if the greatest season in the history of LSU football was ruined by Nick Saban. And so would about 98 percent of the LSU fanbase.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
My favorite nugget is that the team was 9-3 when he stepped down that season.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
FWIW I don’t think OSU should get a split title if they blow out Stanford and Bama struggles with LSU. I think OSU is the 2nd best team in the country, but if Alabama beats LSU, I’d have no problem accepting them as the better team. It’s not like 2003 when I thought USC was the best team in the country before the BCS selection
December 5th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
My favorite nugget is that the team was 9-3 when he stepped down that season.
He knew they weren’t going to be good. Let’s not give him a pass there.

December 5th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Yeah let’s not give him a pass but let’s also not scream conspiracy when the guy who replaced him is now a fucking video coordinator in women’s basketball and probably wasn’t quite as good of a coach as the guy he was replacing.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Exactly. How could an assistant be so terrible to take a 9-3 and send them to the crapper? If they fell about because he wasn’t around (even though he was), then this actually makes him look worse, not better.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:29 AM

He stepped down the game before conference play started… and they went 2-14 in conference.

Coach K. That other sports blog wrote a very interesting story about it. Where he basically threw one of his long-time assistants under the bus.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
No, seriously, I think it works like soccer. Since LSU won by 3 at Bama, Bama has to win by more than 3, or LSU wins the two game series.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
I’m struggling with who I want to root for. I hate Saban, I don’t think they should be in the title game, I don’t want Alabama claiming anymore championships…but it would be so damn funny to me if they did win.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:35 AM

I’m working myself up just thinking about it. LSU would have about 8 NCs if Charlie McClendon wasn’t Bear Bryant’s bitch.

But what if Bama wins by 1 in regulation? LSU needed OT.

Solid work retorting the facts claim with a wrong one. He coached the first game of ACC play.
Seriously? I love the internet. How does that take away from my point really? The one conference game he lost was to Clemson (by 5 points -FACTS!). And then he bailed. Because losing to Clemson at home is a pretty good indication that your team isn’t good.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
My bad I missed where you had a point.

He bailed on a bad team when the schedule got tough.

huh when did coach k step down
/walk me through it by the numbers.

Fun fact though, that Clemson team? First year coach Rick Barnes! Still riding that one Sweet Sixteen appearance with them fifteen years later.

If my facts are right… 1994-1995 season.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
It’s worse being an Arkansas fan. We only have one, and Alabama (who lost to a team we beat) wants to steal part of ours away? At least LSU has a few.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Pitt vs. SMU in Birmingham, you going?

Between Rick Barnes and Mack Brown, Texas has paid their coaches an awful lot to underachieve with great talent.

The most damning thing about K wasn’t the bailing, it was the active record-doctoring after the fact/bus-throwing-under of his colleague.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
LSU has 3, but only one without controversy.
We still hear that USC was better in 2003, and I admit we lucked our asses off in 2007.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
So the entire argument there is that fifteen years later a coach that took a leave of absence had his team’s record on his shoulders so … Duke should get some of those smart kids working on a time machine? Good lord that site has gone to shit.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Pitt vs. SMU in Birmingham, you going?
With all the costs associated with a spring wedding, bachelor party and honeymoon, unlikely. But then again, it’s not that far of a drive from Dallas.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
Good lord that site has gone to shit.
how can you say that with a straight face and comment on this one?
December 5th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I hear that… I would normally not consider it, but it’s a pretty short drive from here. The bigger issue is that I was going to run a race in Birmingham in February, and Bham isn’t exactly the kind of place worthy of visits in consecutive months.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
I don’t see why the two have to be related.
The 94-95 season is shady and it’s been known for a while, I just don’t see how the records part of that article has even the slightest bit of a solid argument to it.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
So what I get out of that is that we should’ve celebrated Coach K breaking the record 4 games sooner.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
I really thought Darren McFadden ended your title hopes that year. And then WVU went on to have the brainfart to end all brainfarts a week later.

I don’t give a shit about the W-L record or whatever… I just hate the coach K hero worship.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
I also like that Calhoun is the point of reference and he’s the biggest piece of shit in coaching. When was the last time K browbeat a kid into giving up a scholarship so that a shadily recruited player can come in a year early?

So I’ve heard. I’ve never been. But I hear that Legion Field is almost literally crumbling. Glad to see that games are still being held there.

The citrus bowl is the biggest dump of a stadium I’ve walked into since County Stadium, and it hosts one of the bigger bowl games.

I get that, trust me I do. Hero worship in college athletics is one of the creepiest things in sports.
However, we all know goddamn full and well that if that season did count on his record (and even if the bailing was shady, he didn’t coach the team, so it’s not like it’s indefensible that he doesn’t get the records from that stretch) that the Duke trolls would just be flipping the script to “he hasn’t broken the record yet, he shouldn’t get credit for those four wins!”

Duke trolls would just be flipping the script to “he hasn’t broken the record yet, he shouldn’t get credit for those four wins!”
Oh yeah… for sure. To be fair, I’m an unabashed Duke hater… but I really don’t care about the W-L record. A lot of other Duke haters would though, you’re right about that.
December 5th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
I’m a Duke fan and don’t give a shit about the W-L record, honestly.
Just like Carolina fans don’t give a shit about Dean Smith’s award of “coach who did the least with the most in the long proud history of college athletics” as voted upon by deez nuts.

but to their credit, they have full service bars at the Cap One Bowl. pretty sure that double Makers and sprites was the only way I made it through the game a couple years ago.

This whole system can go get fucked. What a fucking joke.
December 5th, 2011 at 3:30 PM
To be fair, the 95-96 team returned a lot of the players from the 94-95 team, sans Cherokee Parks and Trajon Langon (knee injury) and K got them to 18-13 and the NCAA tourney.
To me, the whole Duke-hater belief that coach K bailed on the 95 team because they sucked can’t be reconciled with their belief that he is a type A super controlling ego-maniacal asshole. Logically he wouldn’t bail on the team because they might suck, because they wouldn’t suck if he was there to run everything right? Gaudet was treated like shit regardless how you look at it.
