The Harris Interactive Poll: Where Alabama Gets Ranked No. 4 Below Stanford, Twice.
The Harris Interactive Poll, in concert with the Coaches Poll, helps determine the BCS Championship. Here are some of the interesting decisions made by that gaggle of football luminaries who may, or may not, have turned on their television sets last weekend.
Former ND Wide Receiver Derrick Mayes is a strong candidate for the batshit award. He has Auburn (18) and Georgia unranked. Georgia (10-3) beat Auburn (7-5) by a 45-7 margin when the teams met head to head. He has Oklahoma State (6) and Oklahoma (9). He also left Penn State, 9-3, unranked behind Louisville (7-5) and Rutgers (8-4). PSU played three Top 30 teams, three more than Louisville and Rutgers combined.
NFL quarterback and FIU coach Don Strock had a doozy of a ballot as well. He has Michigan (25) eight places behind Nebraska (17), a team with a worse record the Wolverines beat head to head by four touchdowns. Strock also has Cincinnati (18), a 9-3 Big East team with two wins over teams with winning records (N.C. State and Louisville), ahead of West Virginia (20) who beat them and have an identical record, as well as PSU, MSU, Oklahoma and Michigan.
Ex-Stanford QB Todd Husak has a vote. He used it to place Stanford (3) ahead of Alabama (4). Former Iowa State coach Jim Walden also voted Alabama (4) behind Oklahoma State and Stanford.
George Wine, a former SID at Iowa, voted Oklahoma State (6). They are behind Houston (5). Oklahoma went 6-1 vs. the Sagarin Top 30. Houston went 0-1. Wine, 80, admitted “he doesn’t do as much research” as other voters and doesn’t think it is possible to subjectively rank teams. To recap, an 80-year-old, retired PR guy who doesn’t do much research has more influence over the eventual BCS champion than margin of victory.
Gary Sanders has TCU (5) and Oregon (11). Oregon beat Stanford (Sanders’ 4) by three touchdowns in Stanford. TCU beat Sanders’ 6 Boise State by one point on a missed field goal. Oregon played a tougher schedule. LSU/USC > Baylor/SMU.
Former SEC Commissioner, and BCS creator, Roy Kramer had five SEC teams – LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia – in his Top 11. Though, he at least had the good sense to keep Boise State (10) ahead of Georgia (11).

I don’t think anyone can doubt individual voters make foolish decisions. The question is the check and balance in the system. That is, what would the polls look like had these people made more prudent decisions? I’m guessing final poll would look exactly the same as it does now.

What are the chances the line moves a couple towards LSU? I’m surprised by the line a little bit, since LSU won at Bama, but Alabama has the best player on the field, and I assume the coaching matchup favors them.

That seems about right considering SMU’s QB has a broken foot and our starting running back is out for the season and has been replaced by two true freshman: a walk-on from Florida and a converted Nose Tackle.

id rather pick new teams.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:19 PM
I’m not a Mathieu fan at all. The other corner looked pretty good, but to me Richardson was a standout in that game. You shouldn’t be able to gash a ‘great’ defense for those yardage chunks. I definitely could see Bama winning the game 24-10 or something.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:20 PM
More curious on what they eventually set the total at in this one.

I thought it seemed low considering SMU’s difficulties. Add in the fact that June Jones has apparently interviewed with Arizona State and there is possible discord on the team and you have a nice level of distraction for my ponies.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
I figured 1.5 was the total there. I was about to say it’s too high.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
I knew nothing of that, so yeah I’d take Pitt. The bigger question is what will they do next year. A real QB might make a huge difference on that team.

I knew nothing of that, so yeah I’d take Pitt. The bigger question is what will they do next year. A real QB might make a huge difference on that team.
SMU? We’ll have the first honest QB battle since June arrived (assuming he sticks around). Stephen Kaiser is a redshirt freshman and the current backup to McDermott (he of the aforementioned broken foot, he’s also graduating). Kaiser was highly recruited out of high school in Missouri, but has been through two cases of mono in the last year and so apparently has not been able to get a grasp of the offense. His arm strength has apparently fallen off quite a bit too. If he can get healthy by spring, he’ll be in the hunt. Then there’s Connor Preston out of California. He’s redshirting this year and June has been reluctant to burn it. Then there’s the previous QB Kyle Padron. He lost the starting job against A&M, and then injured his back in practice and is lost for the year. It’ll be a three way battle between each of them in spring camp for the starting job. Garrett Gilbert has to sit out next year so he won’t be competing for the starting job until Spring 2013.

SC over NEB
UGA over Sparty
OSU over Florida

December 5th, 2011 at 2:25 PM
I don’t remember many gashes though and his overall numbers came to about a 4 ypc avg, which is good but not other-worldly. Plus I factor in Mathieu’s playmaking as a returner as well. I think both are awesome in their own right and have no problem with either, which is why I said it was debatable, haha.

do i think OSU sucks marginally less than florida? yes…only marginally though.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
No, Pitt. Sunseri is awful.
Yeah… it’s debatable. He had some good sized gains on swing passes too. I just remember thinking he looked like the best player there. I also only saw the second half though, so I reserve the right to be wrong.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
Richardson 6 yards per touch. Awesome numbers against the best defense in the land.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:27 PM
They outplayed LSU in the first 25 minutes of the game, no doubt. LSU was fortunate to be tied at the half. In the 2nd half/OT, LSU was the better team. They bottled up Richardson aside from 1 run and scared the crap out of McCarron. LSU hasnt given up a 2nd half TD since the Auburn game (already up 45-3).
Two factors in LSU’s favor this time: no Jarrett Lee and a more favorable crowd advantage.

UGA vs Sparty will be good. Love watching Aaron Murray and Kirk Cousins play. Hopefully the UGA receivers will learn how to catch the ball before the game.

He’d get killed playing behind that line, especially without a significant running game.

SportsByBrooks saying Mike Stoops is leaning to going to Nebraska. Interesting…
December 5th, 2011 at 2:30 PM
In the 2nd half/OT, Richardson had 12 carries for 33 yards. One of those was a 24 yarder. He also had a 17 yd reception on a 3rd-and-20. Those were the only plays he made in the 2nd half.

I missed the first half, but I swore I heard Lundquist say that the play wasn’t reviewed. Is that true? If so, what the fuck is there a replay official for if he doesn’t review everything that is marginally close?

December 5th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
It was not reviewed. When CBS showed the slo-mo replay, Mathieu clearly tossed the ball to the official before the ball broke the plane. Absolute fucking garbage but then again, we’re talking about SEC officiating. They are the worst
December 5th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
I missed the first half, but I swore I heard Lundquist say that the play wasn’t reviewed.
I was flipping back and forth between this game and the Badger basketball game, so I didn’t see it live. I saw the replay they showed after they came back from a commercial break though, and from what I gathered it wasn’t reviewed. Looked like something the guys in the truck picked up on.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:38 PM
It was true, and I have no clue. Not sure it would have mattered, but it was a big play, that’s for sure.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
Reid/Claiborne made the plays in that game. The only notable play Mathieu made was a stupid clothesline on a punt return that cost the team about 25 yards in a game where field position was at a premium.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
It was true, and I have no clue. Not sure it would have mattered, but it was a big play, that’s for sure.
Fair point. The ball would have been out at around the 1 or the 2 from what look of it. But still…..if you don’t review something like that, then why even have a replay official.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:40 PM
At worst after the touchback maybe 35 -17. Honey Badger get’s a pass on that play which just shows how annoying Desean Jackson is.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
The crazy thing is the official’s arms went up to signal TD before Mathieu flipped it.
December 5th, 2011 at 2:41 PM
Although, if he tossed the ball to the official before breaking the plane and if the official had been standing in such a way that the loose ball would have gone through the endzone and then out of bounds, that would have been a touchback, yes?
