One Armed Fighter Nick Newell Picks Up Submission Victory To Remain Undefeated
This is Nick Newell. He was born without a fully-formed left arm. His arm ends just below his elbow, but that never kept him from competing. Newell was an all-state wrestler in high school who won 153 matches. He was the captain of the wrestling team as a senior at Western New England College. Now, he’s 6-0 as a professional mixed martial artist. All six victories have come via stoppage in the first round.
How far Newell can go in MMA is yet to be seen, but he an incredible inspiration. Something he’s been aware of since beforeĀ his first pro fight. Via MMA Fighting:
“My goal is to prove that people with disabilities can go out and win,” he said. “It’s more of a message I’d like to send, that if you have a goal, go out and do it. Try it, whether it’s fighting or something else. Whether you want to be the best at your job, or at sports, just do your best. Give it everything you have. Winning is very important to me, but at the end of the day, even if I lose, as long as I know I gave it everything I had, there’s no shame in that.”
So far, so good.

good for him. But, there are some advantages as well as disadvantages to his handicap. Regardless, I’m happy he’s putting together a solid career.

reminds me of the story, or aesop fable, about the boy with only a right arm who wanted to learn karate. the teacher looked at him and taught him one move, making him practice it over and over and over. the boy wanted to learn more, but the teacher said this is all you need. so he kept practicing. in his first match, he won within seconds, and his next match, and match after that had all the same results, with the boy performing that one more and winning in seconds.
later, the boy wanted to learn more after prooving he can beat his opponents, but the teacher said no. the move you know is all you need. the teacher smiled and said, to stop you from performing this move, your opponent needs to grab your left arm.
so he goes on to defeat cobra-kai in the grand regional semi finals.
end of story.
