Monday Night Football: San Diego at Jacksonville Provides A Good Time To Handle Those Christmas Decorations
I spent Friday afternoon putting up the kids’ Christmas tree. Was this even a thing when we were kids? I don’t remember having a separate tree with our ornaments on it. Anyway, it’s nice for getting all sorts of goofy ornaments and for putting that Joe Montana Notre Dame action figure ornament that isn’t allowed on the “fancy” tree, and the Mizzou helmet, and the Spider-Man. Did I mention it was for the kids?
Anyway, talking about ornaments is better than this matchup. I should have saved it for tonight. If you haven’t done so yet, might be a good night to work on that mantle with the game in the background.
The 4-7 Chargers travel to the 3-8 Jaguars in the lame duck bowl, except Jack Del Rio didn’t quite make it here, as Mel Tucker is the interim coach. San Diego has done what they have done so many times lately and underperformed. Still, with Oakland’s loss, they can get within 2 games with a victory and keep slim hopes that they make a run and save Norv’s job (we can all dream, right?).
For Jacksonville, the defense has played really well but has been racked with injuries lately. The rush defense suffers without tackle Terrance Knighton, and Rashean Mathis is a key loss in the secondary. They still acquitted themselves well against Houston in the last game, and I look for a decent effort. They just need something out of the offense.
Blaine Gabbert has struggled, mightily. He is only averaging 5.2 yards per attempt, is completing less than half his passes, and taking sacks almost 10% of the time. Add in the sacks and Gabbert is at 4.1 net yards per attempt, making Jacksonville one of the few teams that can gain more yards by running with Maurice Jones-Drew.
Gabbert’s main issue when I have seen him is that he appears unsettled by the rush. He often fails to set his feet, and gets his eyes down too quickly. He’s got the arm strength, and I think the accuracy if he gets his footwork right, but too often he is feeling pressure and letting it affect his mechanics.
The positive is that the Chargers’ pass rush is non-existent. Tim Tebow had time to paint portraits last game. I expect San Diego to be blitz heavy given Gabbert’s struggles against the rush. Plays will be there. Evaluate whether Gabbert sets that back foot and drives the ball, or whether he floats away too early.
San Diego is favored. Sure, they could come out with a great performance, but I’m done expecting that. I look for a heavy dose of Jones-Drew and for Jacksonville to pull the mild upset.

Feels like an ugly game with lots of turnovers and FG attempts.

True, but it becomes that as the season unfolds. I had high hopes for my team in August.
Yeah, it ain’t August.

Little bit of Yes coming back from commercial break. Good call.

Make it 3-0.
Starting to think the Bruins are the NHL version of the Packers. Great team that probably won a year too early, have set themselves up for a run, have one of the best players in the league…
If they can find this gear in April, May, and June, a repeat is not at all out of the question.

In August, who the hell at ESPN thought Jacksonville would be worthy of an MNF game?
Uh, I was thinking of the Chargers, actually. Don’t give a hoot about Jacksonville. In August, I thought they would be a speed bump on the way to the Chargers winning the division.

Once you get rid of Norv Turner you’ll be fine.
Sounds pretty simple. Now that you fixed that, get Halle Berry to give me a call. I’m free for the next few decades…
December 5th, 2011 at 9:13 PM
No, I understand you weren’t talking about Jax. But what was ESPN thinking? Yes, the Chargers were expected to be good, but how good did anyone think Jacksonville really was going to be?
Looking at this week, I’m guessing PIT-CIN was protected, as well as NYG-GB. NE-IND was penciled in for SNF, so that still would have left HOU-ATL, KC-CHI, or NYJ-WSH that you would think would have more “curb appeal” than JAX-SD.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:15 PM
PoM, once I re-read your statement, I gotta concur. Looking at your list, back in Aug I would have thought Texans-Falcons might have been a good matchup for tonight.
Maybe Jets-’Skins as a secondary choice.

Still feel like they have a good deal of talent. I take it you don’t?
December 5th, 2011 at 9:20 PM
The MNF sked is etched in stone. I think there’s a ceiling of 5 night games for teams, in terms of the opening schedule. Three teams could be flexed for a sixth game, but that would only bring Sunday night into play.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:22 PM
Still feel like they have a good deal of talent. I take it you don’t?
I think they have talent. Talent, however, is perishable. Gates is starting to show wear and tear. Line depth, on both sides of the ball, is a problem.
The DBs (especially Cason) have been a weakness. Rivers has been around a while (and I am not convinced he doesn’t have some sort of injury).
Sure, some guys have been hurt and missed time. But, the guys (McNeill, among others) weren’t playing at an All-Pro level when they got hurt.
Right now, they are a mediocre team that needs breaks to win a game. They won’t overwhelm anyone with sheer talent anymore.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:23 PM
I’m with you 100%. I’m surprised they didn’t go Jets-Skins, given the markets, or Texans-Falcons considering how ESPN loves Houston for some reason.
It’s too bad ESPN tries to be “ahead of the curve” on these kinds of things. KC, STL, and JAX each have *2* MNF games? Why?
Instead of going with the safe bet, ESPN tried to catch lightning in a bottle with those 3, I guess. And now they’re stuck with a putrid schedule. Serves them right, I guess.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:25 PM
You are 100% correct. My point was that ESPN gambled (and lost) that teams like the Rams, Jags, Chiefs would maintain the success they had last year. And considering those teams are part of 6 of 17 games on the MNF sked, I’d say they lost that gamble.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:25 PM
The MNF sked is etched in stone. I think there’s a ceiling of 5 night games for teams, in terms of the opening schedule. Three teams could be flexed for a sixth game, but that would only bring Sunday night into play.
Which gets us back to the initial dilemma. As much as I like SD, I don’t know if I will stay up to watch it all. ESPN can’t be happy about this game’s potential viewership. Other than diehards, who is interested in this matchup?
December 5th, 2011 at 9:29 PM
Fuck the Blackhawks and Coyotes.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:30 PM
Knighton is a big ol’ boy. That was grounding, BTW.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:33 PM
If the Chargers can’t cover 3 fucking points against the Jaguars I’ll hate them with a passion till the day I die.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:34 PM
Gotcha. I just don’t view the Monday night game as that big anymore. They’ve essentially flipped its importance with the Sunday nighter on NBC, where the same collection of teams are ALWAYS on, last night notwithstanding. Remember the old Sunday night NITRO on TNT, where they’d split the Sunday night sked with ESPN in the 80s and early 90s? They had some real garbage matchups too.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:35 PM

December 5th, 2011 at 9:35 PM

December 5th, 2011 at 9:36 PM

i have evidence, in the form of a t-shirt that is finally falling apart. NFL on TNT. won it in a radio trivia contest
December 5th, 2011 at 9:39 PM
That’s fantastic. I thought they did a nice job. I can’t watch this ESPN coverage. Everyone’s the greatest, blah, blah, blah.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:41 PM
Yup. I imagine the pecking order goes something like this:
NFC East team (regardless of who the opponent is)
Pittsbugh (regardless of who the opponent is)
NFC North team (preference to Green Bay or Chicago)
New England (regardless of who the opponent is)
Random other Divisional matchup
And I agree with you completely that MNF is not even close to what it used to be. Especially with ESPN shoving its coverage down your throat starting at 3:00, and the fact that the games don’t usually end until midnight.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:42 PM
Seems like the overall quality of teams has declined too. Just aren’t as many compelling teams as there used to be, IMO.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:44 PM
Timmah with his 10th win in a row; B’s have won 14 out of 15.
And this conference re-alignment is gonna be pretty money.

/That means “I agree with Vez”
December 5th, 2011 at 9:54 PM
Most definitely. I guess if you tossed New Orleans and Indy in there with Manning, and maybe Baltimore and the Jets, and that’s about it. About a third of the league gets a regular appearance.
I hear you. That’s why the NFL doesn’t get it with the parity, even though there really isn’t any in terms of one season at a time. I’d much rather have a handful of dominant teams on a collision course for each other than have ten teams at 8-8.
Plus, it was so much easier to gamble, or so I’m told. Two or three team teaser with DAL, SF and GB in the mid 90s? Those teams routinely covered double digits.
December 5th, 2011 at 9:57 PM
Apparently a lot of the Eastern teams are bitching about the added travel. Cry me a river.

For such a prolific unit for a number of years you’ve got V-Jax from what, Northern Colorado, Floyd from Wyoming and Gates who played hoops? Interesting.
December 5th, 2011 at 10:44 PM
Yeah, Jackson went to Widefield High here in the Springs, then the other UNC. Not highly regarded coming out of college, but really blossomed with SD.

Worst. Snap. Evah.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:09 PM
Oh, now you get off. Four-and-seven, last place. After a month of losses, and virtual elimination from playoff contention, now you wanna execute.
Do it next week, SD. Do it next week.

I figured it was just winding down, not looking at the clock…now I realize there’s another 9 minutes left. Yikes.

Gabbert is terrible. So many throws at the feet of his receivers. Just flat out garbage.
December 5th, 2011 at 11:26 PM
You can do that for a whole career and, for a limited period of time, be considered for the HOF.

If Skip Bayless really watched football, he’d know that the Broncos are far from having the worst offensive talent in the NFL. He definitely hasn’t watched the Browns and the Jaguars
December 5th, 2011 at 11:33 PM
You can see now why I sound somewhat pessimistic when talking about the Chargers, even with Jacksonville struggling now.
How do you solve the problem at the pro level? Team with talent and potential, but no consistent execution. Is it lack of heart? Lack of committment? Poor coaching? All of the above? Something totally different?
December 5th, 2011 at 11:34 PM

Finding it hard to stick up for him anymore, was one of my favorite Huskers, but he has some serious issues…
December 6th, 2011 at 12:05 AM
I bet it is really tough for Husker fans. When a former college teammate (Matt Slauson) comes out and speaks up against Suh, that definitely speaks volumes.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:06 AM
He can’t control himself on the field so he gets suspended. Now he can’t control himself in his personal life. Does not bode well for the future.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:09 AM
I bet it is really tough for Husker fans. When a former college teammate (Matt Slauson) comes out and speaks up against Suh, that definitely speaks volumes.
Slauson wasn’t universally liked as Suh is, so I kind of blew that off, but the stomping thing was fucked up, and I don’t think he knew what he did until he watched it after…out.of.control.

She said he refused and told her she was fine. She eventually walked down the street and had her husband pick her up and take her to Oregon Health and Science University for treatment.
Why is she riding around late at night with a dude who isn’t her husband? If that was my wife calling me, saying she was riding with another dude AND she got broken up because he was driving recklessly, I would be beyond pissed. At her and the driver.
Regarding Suh, he’s on that road to self-destruction we’ve all seen before. No different than Barnaby in that he needs outside, professional help to change his ways.
December 6th, 2011 at 12:11 AM
I was trying to parse that one, too, SROD. Another dude who is a millionaire professional athlete at that. Why would that be OK?
December 6th, 2011 at 12:16 AM
stark, I hear ya and agree with ya. My only rational guess would be if the lady and Suh were cousins or step-siblings.
Even if the two were friends from birth, and the lady is now my wife, and she comes to me and says “I’m going for a ride with this other dude/I’ll be back late”, to me the only answer would be “don’t come back.”
Literally, what the hell?

I was trying to parse that one, too, SROD. Another dude who is a millionaire professional athlete at that. Why would that be OK?
Dude could be mormon and have like 5 other wives so he was OK with it for one night (and really wanted Suh’s autograph)
