Reports Have Kevin Sumlin Leaving For Texas A&M Within 24 Hours
Kevin Sumlin should not have long to linger over Houston’s title game loss. CBS Houston is reporting the nation’s hottest coaching candidate will be named Mike Sherman’s replacement at Texas A&M within 24 hours. That would explain why Arizona State abruptly pulled out of the bidding.
Sumlin has a 35-17 record in four years with the Cougars, 32-11 with Keenum as the starter. He was co-offensive coordinator for Bob Stoops at Oklahoma before taking the job in 2008.
Assuming there’s fire to the blinding smoke coming from College Station, that would be another potential home for Mike Stoops. He has been rumored to be Sumlin’s choice for defensive coordinator. He has met with Urban Meyer about the Ohio State DC job. He also could replace Carl Pellini at Nebraska if he leaves for Florida Atlantic. His brother could have an opening if Brent Venables is offered a head job. Presumably, he might get some lower-level head-coaching interest as well.

Sumlin is a piece of crap if this story is true.
Why, exactly?
And, this seems to be the way the coaching carousel is played. This may be Sumlin’s best opportunity to move up and join the big boys. Conference USA dominance can only take one so far.

from the looks of it, dr pepper HAS been the most important thing that has ever happened to her.

Does Sumlin get to take Case Keenum with him to College Station? Because I haven’t seen much evidence that he’s a very good coach without Keenum

Why, exactly?
Because this was the program’s biggest game in decades and he had one foot out the door the whole time.

He does not need to go TOMORROW. Recruiting dead period is about to start – it is not THAT CRITICAL that he focus on his coaching opportunities as opposed to doing his current job.
aTm had a coach as of this week. They did not need to make the move NOW.
He could, you know, have waited until tomorrow to play the belle of the ball.

Can we get a Ryan Boatright post?

He does not need to go TOMORROW
Correct, but…
As we both know, there is more to FBS head coaching than recruiting. There is the obligatory butt-kissing of well-heeled boosters and financial supporters. There is the hiring of subordinate staff. There is the PR aspect that “we’re moving in a new direction now!” I’m sure there are other considerations I fail to list.
Yepper, he doesn’t need to go tomorrow. If he does, it’s because he wants to, nothing more.
If he has agreed in principle to go, maybe (just maybe) Houston would prefer that he leave so they can turn the page as well.
Ultimately, why do we do anything these days? ‘Cause we can.

No. I think UH would prefer he focus on the game, since today’s lost cost them a very nice paycheck. And it doesn’t take any special effort to kiss booster butt; coaches are regularly hired in the middle of December or later and adjust fine.
This is incredibly obvious; the fact that you basically say that we can all be assholes because we can be assholes isn’t reassuring, and I doubt you would want someone that you depend upon to act in that matter.

Nah, I am not saying we can be a**holes at will, per se. What I am saying is those qualities we tend to ascribe to head coaches don’t always reside in those same persons.
Look at Saban. Had a pretty good deal at LSU. Wasn’t happy. Said one thing, did something different.
My bigger point is each of us as people have to consciously decide whether or not to be a**holes on a daily basis.
Frankly, I get dismayed by it, but there is not much I can do if Kevin Sumlin decides he wants to change jobs tomorrow. He won’t hold off until after bowl season if Ralph (my real name) says “don’t go”.
I’d rather live in a world where we have no a**holes.
To your point about UH preferring he focus on the game, I remember Bill Frieder (former Mich basketball coach) flirting with Arizona State at the close of a basketball season, Schembechler getting him out (“I want a Michigan man…), and Steve Fisher falling into a pretty fortunate national championship run. Admittedly, every college/every situation is different. Also, this isn’t the late 80s.
