Deron Williams Gives the Nets the Stiff-Arm: He’s Not Re-Signing With New Jersey
Deron Williams, who was traded from the Jazz to the Nets in February, has decided he will not be re-signing with New Jersey at season’s end, but instead opt-out and become a free agent.
“Deron will not be signing the extension,” Jeff Schwartz told The Record this afternoon. “Based on the new rules it doesn’t make any sense for him to sign the extension. It has nothing to do with how much he likes New Jersey. Because of the rules, he’s going to play the season out and opt out of his deal.”
So much for the dream of Williams loving life on the East Coast and attempting to lure Dwight Howard to the Nets.
Remember when everyone hailed Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov as wise for not over-paying for Carmelo Anthony (the Knicks did) and then swooping in to land Williams? Well, it’s looking like Prokhorov took a big risk and it didn’t pan out. He gave up 2010 1st round draft pick Derrick Favors and two future 1st round draft picks in the deal for Williams. And in return he gets … zip.
But wait! The Nets will have ample cap room next summer to pursue … ha! All the stars want to team up these days, so I’d imagine some of the best players in the league are pining to play alongside Brook Lopez. Good luck, Prokhorov.

I think we need Cousin Yuri to convince him to stay with the Nets.

This is what makes the NBA pure garbage. In a couple teams there will just be 3-4 elite teams and the rest will be tanking for lottery balls.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:12 PM
So much for the lockout addressing that whole competitive imbalance thing.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:13 PM
Yep. 3-4 All Star teams and a whole bunch of yawn.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:15 PM
Rolando McClain is in some deep shit.
Wally
So who would you rather have, Noah Spence or Se’Von Pittman? Spence considers OSU his #1 and Pittman is considered a visit.

Free Agency? Yeah I want the league to keep one of its premier talents on a shitty team with no real chance of competing in the near future.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:17 PM
second verse, same as the first!
so, what did the lockout accomplish anyway, aside from cancelling a significant portion of the season?
December 1st, 2011 at 5:17 PM
Playoffs this year were awful weren’t they?
/No they weren’t
//stop recycling the same gripes about the NBA
December 1st, 2011 at 5:22 PM
It’s not necessarily the same gripe. Since now the true stars of the league have no issue with just holding their teams hostage, demanding where they want to go and team up with other superstars in a few select cities. Doesn’t matter how many 1st round picks a team gets in compensation when those picks will be at the end of the 1st round.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:24 PM
How is it not collusion when several players decide to go to one team?
I understand free agents have the right to choose the best situation/contract, but the whole Lebron, Wade, Bosh thing reeked. It will screw any competitive balance that there could be.
With rosters so small, it only takes a few.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:25 PM
SHOCKED that no one wants to stay in Jersey.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:28 PM

I think players are allowed to collude as much as they want but if coaches or management is involved then it’s a problem.

the NBA is like “the walking dead”. die hards love it and can ignore all the faults, it gets ratings because it’s entertaining, but it’s so fun to complain about becuase the faults make it easier to not take it seriously when you aren’t a die hard fan.

Don’t know how this is typical NBA move, he’s leaving a big market.
Unless he goes to Lakers.
Just glad D Howard has one less place he would go to.

He still has value. They can trade him before the deadline, and get a lot of their haul back.
Additionally, can anyone expand on the agent’s statement on why it wouldn’t make sense to sign an extension?
December 1st, 2011 at 5:31 PM
It says hes not signing the EXTENSION not that hes NOT CONSIDERING STAYING. In fact if you had done your research you would see that the reason he didnt sign said extension is because he can sign for more money if he waits and then signs. Excellent reporting TBL

Cant remember where I read it but if her signs extension he can only sign for like 39 mil? If he waits he can get more, not sure how much
December 1st, 2011 at 5:33 PM
Fuck the fucking NBA. I was really hoping, by some miracle, that the lockout would last forever. I’ll take college hoops over that garbage any day.
And fuck David Stern, too…

How come nobody has beef with the numerous baseball players that change teams ever year?
December 1st, 2011 at 5:34 PM
Shockingly enough its in the artice TBL mentioned…
It is not surprising that Williams would take this route. He can earn roughly $30 million more by opting out at the end of the season and re-signing with the Nets, if that’s what he decides to do.
According to the new CBA, when it is ratified, Williams can sign a two-year extension during the season that would be tacked on to the two years left on his current contract, bringing the total value of the deal to approximately four years and $70 million.
If he waits until after the season, he could get a contract for five years worth $100 million from the Nets, or a four-year, $70 million deal from anybody else.

My take is there are a lot more variables on teams with larger rosters. One or two major moves can significantly improve or ruin (Cleveland) a team.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:39 PM
The max extention is 2yr/39M. If he waits until the end of the year and opts out, he can get 5/100 from NJ or 4/74 from another team. Bucha idiots that thought ip this new CBA.

Because in baseball, one player doesn’t make the difference between competitive and non-competitive.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:42 PM
If Puljos signs with the Cubs, they still won’t even be considered a favorite let alone a lock to make the playoffs.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:42 PM
And the Nets are not even staying in Jersey, so he might be enticed to be the face of the new Brooklyn franchise.

David DeJesus signing here did one thing. Make me want to Google search his wife.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:51 PM
I guess but there is an irrational hatred toward NBA players for choosing to play in another city that doesn’t apply to baseballers.

Because MLB players are pretty much owned by a team at a minimal salary for like 4 or 5(?) years then become arbitration eligible.

Vlad –
A little late, but I’d take Pittman. Either would be great. Both would be superb!
Pittman’s GF is heading to OSU to play hoop next year (Ms. Basketball as a junior) too.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:06 PM
Yeah both would be sick. Imagine if Urban can lock up an elite LB, Algohor and Caleb too. That would be sweet.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:11 PM
Clearly him and Dwight have figured out that Phoenix will be able to sign two max free agents next year and are acting accordingly.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:24 PM
Barry Bonds in 2002 would probably have something to say about this.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:31 PM
Baseball players are tough, gutty, gritty, full of heart, down to earth, and humble. Basketball players are thugs, lack fundamental, lack the mental capacity to understand complex playing system, wear tattoo, part of the look at me culture, and don’t appreciate all the good things others have done for them.
Did you not get the memo?
December 1st, 2011 at 6:37 PM
The new CBA was always about the BRI. Owners handily won on that point. They’ve made player movement tougher, but not completely impossible. I’m sure they would have liked to make it more tougher for player to move where they want, but you take what you can get. Owners got what they wanted. Curbed the amount of money that players get. Overall economic environment will dramatically improve. But you will still have the haves and the have nots. Just like all the other sports beside football.
But hey, let’s just let uninformed self-professed NBA haters parrot their same old garbage like they always do.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:40 PM
So I take it that you’ve never heard of the NBA rookie salary scale?
December 1st, 2011 at 6:43 PM
Yes. you’re right. He’s just opting out to get more money … from the Nets. would you care to make a friendly wager right now whether or not he returns to the Nets?
of course he and his agent have to say that … but we all know the Nets have zero shot of getting him.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:44 PM
TBL, when are we getting the NBA preview. Any exact time? I’d like to be here for that discussion.

I’m truly sorry if there was a misunderstanding. So let me make it clear, I don’t give a shit about your opinion on NBA. I was talking about predictions and opinions from people who actually watch the game, and not from someone who pop off about a sport they don’t like and isn’t even aware of something as basic as rookie salary scale.
But I better go before Gaseous, you, and all your basketball hating buddies accuse me of being overly sensitive.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:14 PM
kaiser, did you watch the US-France u17 match? Been swamped this week, missed it.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:18 PM
I’m fully aware of the rookie wage scale. Why don’t you go jerk off to some scat porn.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:23 PM
No, too busy watching pros play to pay attention to the youth sides. But overall, its an encouraging sign that most MLS teams are building up euro-style training academies for their youth. USA will never hit the big time as long as talent is being groomed by high schools and colleges. I saw that a 16 year old started in past MLS season for philadelphia. Hopefully this becomes a norm in the MLS over next few years.
Like duffy says, 20 isn’t “young” in soccer. These kids should already be regularly starting in the MLS at 17-18 years old.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:26 PM
yes, sure you do.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:43 PM
But I thought everybody should want to go to New York, the mecca of basketball?
December 1st, 2011 at 7:48 PM
I think Chris Paul will end up in New York. But I don’t understand what Deron William is thinking. Miami is set, New York with CP3 will be set. So where does that leave Deron? Go home to dallas? I’d be fun if he ended up with the clippers (stop laughing), to team up with Griffin.
December 1st, 2011 at 8:43 PM
True, but let’s face it- this new CBA was mostly designed to protect the owners from themselves. The less wiggle room some of these morons have the better.
December 1st, 2011 at 10:37 PM
No doubt. Funny thing is, the new salary floor which forces team to spend a certain amount of money will just cause more dumb contract to be handed out. But regardless, overall a lot more team will make profit unlike under previous deal.
