Rick Reilly Thinks UCLA is Sweetening the Offer to Chris Petersen With Assurances For His “Special Needs Kid”

ESPN’s Rick Reilly decided to jump into the college coaching search rumor mill Tuesday night with a tweet about Boise State’s Chris Petersen getting offered $20 million over five years from UCLA, along with this bizarre note: “assurances his special needs kid will get great care at UCLA med center.”
It didn’t take long for Brian Murphy of the Idaho Statesman to respond to Reilly – Petersen doesn’t have a special needs son.
Here’s what George Schroeder wrote on SI.com about Petersen’s son back in 2009:
Petersen’s son Sam had just turned 1, an apparently healthy toddler playing with his older brother in the stands during a preseason scrimmage. But when he fell and hit his head, a routine examination revealed a nightmare. Sam had a brain tumor. And though it was successfully removed during an eight-hour surgery, doctors soon discovered the cancer had spread to Sam’s spine.
As football season unfolded, Chris Petersen somehow balanced the 80-hour work weeks and family life. His wife, Barbara Petersen, spent a full month living at the hospital with young Sam. Chris divided his time between Eugene and Portland, 100 miles away, where his young son was undergoing treatment.
But you’re wondering about young Sam Petersen. The family celebrated his 11th birthday earlier this summer. He’s healthy, a frequent presence around Bronco Stadium — “Really into football, and the Broncos,” Chris said — and a constant reminder of why his father doesn’t seem very interested in uprooting for the next big thing.
Does Reilly know something nobody else does?
While Petersen has been untouchable the last few years – as in, thanks, but no thanks without hearing the offer – there is some scuttlebutt that he’s actually listening to offers this year. (Kellen Moore, his star QB, is graduating after an incredibly successful run.) Something to watch – Boise is approaching month four in its athletic director search. Who wants that job if Chris Petersen isn’t locked in as coach? (Who wants to move to Boise?) As long as that opening isn’t filled, I’ll assume Petersen is weighing his options.

Would Bryan Harsin leave Texas to take that job?
Petersen can all but name his next job. I don’t think he’s leaving for a mess like UCLA.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
concerning CFB, no. But he has to have some mega dirt on somebody high up at espn to get paid for sucking.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
I just don’t think UCLA is a very good job, but the timing for a move is perfect for Petersen. I don’t know why PSU wouldn’t offer him the moon and see what happens.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
Petersen is coming to Texas after Sir Mack wins the 2013 title.

rick reily is an insufferable douche. his presence annoys me
November 30th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
(Who wants to move to Boise?)
I don’t understand why TBL uses this argument all the time when he’s talking about taking a job somewhere. If you were an up and coming assistant athletic director and it’s your desire is to keep moving up, you wouldn’t take this job… simply because it’s in Boise? You can’t just hold out and wait for the AD job to open up at ND. It’s a good stepping stone to a bigger job. There are decent high paying jobs out there that aren’t located in LA or NYC.

rick reily is an insufferable douche. his presence annoys me
Not a fan of smug, high-pitched banter?
November 30th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Who wants to move to Boise?)
Who wants to move to half of the towns\cities that have prominent programs? With that logic, Hofstra would be the #1 destination.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
And has anyone here been to Boise? Gorgeous.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
Who wants to move to half of the towns\cities that have prominent programs? With that logic, Hofstra would be the #1 destination.
Exactly. Who wants to move to Tallahassee? How is State College PA any better than Boise? It’s nonsense.

I’d rather live in Boise than Columbus.

Take the money and run. UCLA is paradise.

I’d rather let Michael J. Fox shave my nuts than live in Columbus.

O/T
I just read this and I’m floored at how much ESPN pays people. Would ANYONE stop watching ESPN is Hannah Storm left?
“Kornheiser’s comments would leave behind an ironic legacy. His suspension by no means put an end to coworkers’ fascination with Hannah Storm’s outfits — the gossiping and backbiting never even slowed down — but in a way, Storm had cause to be extremely grateful to her cranky nemesis. Before Kornheiser volunteered his crude form of fashion commentary that day, Storm was in negotiations to renew her ESPN contract at a yearly figure stuck in the mid seven hundred thousands. But her “ordeal,” and the ensuing attention it brought her, very likely contributed to the fact that once the new contract was signed and sealed, the happy number for her was $1.2 million. As one executive said, “Kornheiser opened up his mouth and got clipped for two weeks’ salary, but Hannah walked away with a dividend of close to half a million dollars.”
November 30th, 2011 at 12:25 PM
Alot of hate for Columbus around here — I thought it was, and is, a cool city.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I’d rather let Michael J. Fox shave my nuts than live in Columbus.
I laughed out loud
November 30th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
As a town this is a no-shit statement, is it not?
November 30th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
I just read this and I’m floored at how much ESPN pays people.
If you saw how much they charged cable providers per subscriber you wouldn’t be. ESPN rakes in the cash. Agree that they overpay people with little talent though.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
As a town this is a no-shit statement, is it not?
Not if you’re TBL.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Does Reilly know something nobody else does?
No.
I’d rather let Michael J. Fox shave my nuts than live in Columbus.
Harsh. True, but harsh.
Who wants to move to Tallahassee?
People who like meth and trailer Milfs?
November 30th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
That’s pretty mindblowing SirSpicious. It kind of makes you wonder what other long-time ESPN folk are making.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
I forget who, but a few days ago I saw someone in the CFB media tweet that Petersen can essentially pick the next AD. Also, I highly doubt he would leave for a job like UCLA. He has it made, it would probably take a stable top 10 job to get him out of Boise, IMO.
/Could definitely see him as the next coach at Texas

Madison.

Top 5 college towns? Austin is #1/#1, right?
Austin is definitely up there. I’ve heard Oxford, MS is pretty nice too.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
I made it this far.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
they would just replace with another pretty face.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Oxford is overrated. it’s nice, but gets too much play.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Snow and cows. Yay.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
This would be my guess, though it’s tough calling Austin a college town as it’s huge. I’ve heard Madison is good, but it’s way too cold to be the No. 1 school. Though I doubt anyone wants to look at the Wiksy heifers without several layers of clothing on.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
they would just replace with another pretty face.
It’s quite surprising how few anchors at ESPN are really pretty. Hannah and then…. ? Sage? I’m surprised they haven’t gone the FoxNews route.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Oxford is overrated. it’s nice, but gets too much play.
I’ve never been, so I’ll have to take your word on that.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Austin is definitely up there. I’ve heard Oxford, MS is pretty nice too.
Oxford is nice, but I can’t imagine it compares in terms of social life to Austin. They do have a shit ton of country sorority girls — but they get annoying. FAST!
November 30th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
scenery shouldn’t count though. oxford is small and there isn’t much to do, and let’s not forget it’s in Mississippi. the eye candy will make you forget that though.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Snow and cows. Yay.
Spoken like someone who has never been there.

November 30th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
I just read this and I’m floored at how much ESPN pays people. Would ANYONE stop watching ESPN is Hannah Storm left?
The only show of theirs they shouldn’t mess with are College Gameday and College Gameday Final. Everything else could be scrapped and re-started and I wouldn’t be hurt by it.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Austin: Guns and Livestock
You haven’t spent much time in Austin, have you.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Charlottesville.
/it’s nice but I’m also a homer
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
rick reilly sent you the video of the star wars kid last week and got angry when you didn’t respond with “lol.”
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I think we need a better definition of ‘college town’. Durham NH is a college town. Knoxville and Blacksburg are college towns. Madison, Columbus, and Austin are state friggin capitols which happen to have large prominent football schools there. Someone from those places will have to correct me if the cities really revolve around the school but you have to make a decision on how much of the town away from the school factors into it. If it does a lot, then I imagine Austin takes it.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Austin: Guns and Livestock
steers and queers
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I’ve heard great things about Seattle, but can we really call that a college town?
November 30th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
don’t get me wrong, it was nice, but it’s no better than any of the other cities I’ve been to a game in (Athens, Gainesville, Tuscaloser, and Knoxville).
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Charlottesville is also a really nice college town, that is very much a college town. I just can’t think of a city with 700k people as a ‘town’.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Homer vote for Boulder, and Madison, Austin, Athens
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
That’s why I said Seattle. Austin’s metro is over a million people for christ’s sake.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
so then wouldn’t it be a good thing that it’s cold so those bigguns stay all bundled up?
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I lived there for a year and it’s a very pretty town (campus is awesome) but the social scene skews a bit older. In fact, I think it’s one of the top places for retirees. That kind of crushes the college town street cred if you ask me.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
Also going by reputation only, I hear Boulder would like to be included in this list.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
You haven’t spent much time in Austin, have you.
I hope this was sarcastic. That was the joke.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
i’m not really floored with the attractiveness of ESPN’s female personalities. They are good looking, but i wouldn’t run through walls for them.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Austin’s city population is bigger than Seattle’s. I’m not sure why people imagine Austin as a small town with like one main street.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Seattle is far higher up on the ‘great cities’ list than the ‘great college towns’ list.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
I can vouch that this is actually correct.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
I fucking loved this town. I went to the UGA game last year up there and loved everything about it. I would move to the Denver area in a heartbeat if the Mrs. could be convinced.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
I’m not sure why people imagine Austin as a small town with like one main street.
Yeah.. me neither. It’s got a pretty decent skyline.

I fucking loved this town.
Just as cold as Madison, yo.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
I hated it when I moved 15 years ago, but every time I go back it seems better and better. Not amazing by any means, but it’s a’ight for the Midwest.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Also, State College, as an actual college town, is pretty damn awesome.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
No, Seattle is not a college town.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I hope this was sarcastic. That was the joke.
You should have gone with ‘steers and queers’ as RealAC suggested. It would have been more obvious.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Okay… how about only towns where the college students + employees are equal to half the town’s population? (or some other appropriate %)
November 30th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Never seen so many visiting fans in my life… i was really impressed. btw I’m a senior at CU and live on the hill if you remember the area

November 30th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Someone from those places will have to correct me if the cities really revolve around the school but you have to make a decision on how much of the town away from the school factors into it.
I can tell you from experience that Austin is all about the Longhorns. Shit there revolves around the school for most of them since they’re the one major team they have.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
What I heard on this is that guy in Boise who was Petersen’s kid’s doctor for like 5 years is now at UCLA, and that is something that could be attractive about the job.
This guy gets it.
/TBL’d
November 30th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
No way is Austin a college town. It has a million friggin people. It is awesome, though.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Does Madison have skiing? Call me when they do, because that could change my opinion.
Yeah, there’s a few decent and cheap places to ski within an hour of it. But if you’re asking if Madison is located in the Rocky Mountains, then no.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
In terms of places I have visited that are “college towns”
1. State College
2. Oxford
3. Athens, OH (I wish it was Georgia, but OU has a good party scene)
November 30th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Oxford, OH — not MS. Miami is a strange, yet awesome place.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Tell me about it. I was stuck in the airport the next two days due to flying standby. There is a massive alumni base in Denver, so that helped with the fans. The official tailgate set up that they provided was amazing. Just a gorgeous campus. It’s the only campus that I’ve been to that I liked better than Athens so far.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
Homer vote for East Lansing.
/Boulder is probably the correct answer
November 30th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Ahh — East Lansing is a good one too. I liked that place as well.
November 30th, 2011 at 12:49 PM

/I also like the signing because it’s reasonable baseball wise

I’ve been to Neb, Iowa State, Ohio State, Colorado, Southern Cal, South Carolina, Clemson, Virginia and Auburn.
I want to go to Austin, Oxford, Baton Rouge (just for a game…I’m sure the town is a dump), T-Town (see Baton Rouge), UCLA and Seattle.

The rumors about the women were absolutely true. Avg was about a 7. Guys were all rich midwestern DBs. I said this in a previous thread, but the rumor was that the piping in Miami is terrible because there is such a prevelance of bulimia that the stomach acid eats away at the piping systems.

It’s really not. Some people have the impression that it’s 20 below zero 9 months out of the year in Wisconsin.

Petersen to UNC. Let’s do it. One look at that Belltower adjacent to Kenan Stadium should be enough to bring him in.
