Jim Boeheim: “I Supported A Friend, That’s What I Thought I Did”
Jim Boeheim took to the podium after the game against Eastern Michigan Tuesday night, and addressed the Bernie Fine situation. He was at times contrite, at times thoughtful, and at other times, more forceful and resolute.
He spoke about his initial defense of Bernie Fine, which included accusing Bobby Davis of lying and that it was all about money.
I supported a friend, that’s what I thought I did. I’m proud that I did. I think if you’ve known somebody and worked with somebody for 36 years and known them for 48 years and went to school with them, you went to school with them, I think you owe a debt of allegiance and gratitude for what he did with for the program, and that’s what my reaction was, and . . . so be it.
I’ve already shared my thoughts on those initial statements, and I think that as a friend, some of those statements are to be expected, but as a leader at an institution, some of them went too far. I don’t think the debt of allegiance to Bernie Fine justifies attacking a potential victim before details have emerged; express support, fine, attack potential victims and create a chilling effect, not fine. It was more justification than apology. I don’t get the feeling Boeheim thinks what he did was wrong.
He also said that no ball boys have traveled with the team (“as ball boys”), a key potential distinction as we know that Bobby Davis went on trips with Bernie Fine’s family, and the question of whether he actually traveled “with the team” or separately as a guest of Bernie Fine could matter in the future.
He also talked about finding out what happened “on my watch”, a phrase he used often, and from his tone, I think he feels he did not do anything wrong other than trust Bernie Fine.
Boeheim also closed with some classic Boeheim: “I’ve never worried about my job status in 36 years . . . when I worry about that, I may have to get a job with you guys.”
I will say this, Boeheim at least came forward and talked about it, rather than, like Penn State did, announce a press conference where only questions about the game would be addressed, then cancel it. I thought he handled himself as well as possible given the circumstances. It’s clear that for now, he, and Syracuse University, aren’t giving in to the calls from groups around the country and writers for him to be terminated for his statements about the victim.

Someone wake me when somebody gets fired at ESPN for sitting on a tape, confirming Fine was doing this, for 8 years. What a joke.

ESPN crucified Paterno for sitting on allegations of child rape, yet they did almost exactly the same thing? Where’s the outrage?
November 30th, 2011 at 4:58 PM
i’m still waiting for the confirmation the tape wasn’t doctored and for reasons why ESPN was the only entity give a copy of the tape.
people really want to make this into another PSU scandal, but there’s even less evidence right now in this one than in the PSU case.

So Paterno (or PSU), in all likelihood, showed Sandusky the door after the ’98 allegations, whereas Boeheim kept Fine in his position. I assume the outrage is at a similar level and Jim “This isn’t like Penn State” Boeheim will be shown the door for this actually occurring on his watch?

“I think if you’ve known somebody and worked with somebody for 36 years and known them for 48 years and went to school with them, you went to school with them … “
After 48 years, I guess you didn’t really know him at all, Jim.

Yesterday SG was telling me this wasn’t true. I don’t know what to believe anymore.

I’ve compared PSU’s allowing Sandusky to use their facilities as his personal Neverland Ranch, but reporters seem to shy away from that one. They prefer The Wire analogies.

Bobby Davis lived with the Fines for many years and did travel with the family on road trips as the babysitter. So he might have been in Fine’s room but it wasn’t as a ballboy.

RKDS,
The big difference is that the Fine allegations could not be corroborated so I can understand why Boeheim kept Fine on the staff. If there was more proof back then, Fine would have been gone.

But the fact that they existed at all should have given Boeheim reason to be more careful with his comments.

Totally agree. Boeheim has a bad temper and he definitely lost it that day.

The morality olympics ended a few weeks ago, Rex. The national media has already shown that they can be outraged by a story like this, so no need to do so again.
November 30th, 2011 at 5:16 PM
that’s a tough leap… i mean, if the investigation goes to the point where charges are filed, that’s one thing since it means there’s enough evidence (no matter how thin) can be tried… but it there’s allegations that don’t even have enough evidence to have charges brought up… and nothing new is provided, but in the wake of PSU the same people bring up the same allegations that didn’t result in anything… i can understand the reaction.

Jim Boeheim is nothing but smug. All of these professed “leaders” want to be paid and respected as such, but when it comes time to take responsibility and accountability for your intial reaction, “I supported a friend, that’s what I thought I did.”

“I supported a friend, that’s what I thought I did.”
Lesson From PSU n’ ‘Cuse: Apparently friends shouldn’t coach with friends. It SEVERLY blurs what is right and what is wrong.

I think(and hope) Boeheim will be fine job-wise. My initial reaction when I heard about this story and then the only other allegation was from this guy’s brother was it was a money grab and a ploy for some media attention. It seemed to happen too soon after the Penn State scandal to be true. Why after all this time? Why NOW? If Fine was a good friend for that many years, I probably would have reacted the same way.
