Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that the Jaguars fired coach Jack Del Rio. This isn’t a major surprise. Del Rio barely survived last season and had no shot this year when the team released QB David Garrard days before the start of the regular season. Del Rio started the season with Luke McCown at QB, but that experiment quickly failed, and rookie Blaine Gabbert was tossed into the fire. Gabbert’s been a wreck in 10 games, completing less than 50 percent of his passes (though it’s not like he’s got anyone skilled to throw to). The Jaguars are a raging dumpster fire, having scored the fewest points in the NFL (138, yes, fewer than the inept Colts and the pathetic Rams). Del Rio switched back to McCown in Sunday’s loss to Houston, and perhaps that was the last straw for management.

Or, maybe Del Rio knew he was done at season’s end, so he wanted to be cut loose early so he could have a crack at one of the many college football openings? Del Rio went to USC and is from California … while he was playing in the NFL in 1990, he went to the University of Kansas to get his degree. UCLA and Kansas have coaching openings. I imagine Del Rio will lobby hard for any job, and yes, that includes lower-tier schools like UAB, Memphis, and even Washington State.
