ESPN’s Chris Broussard Thinks the Knicks Are Going to Get Chris Paul. ESPN’s John Hollinger Crunches the Numbers, Says Otherwise
ESPN’s Chris Broussard on Colin Cowherd’s radio show Monday morning: “I think they’re going to get Chris Paul. I think there’s a great chance he ends up in New York … If they don’t get Chris Paul for some reason, Dwight Howard is a possibility, Deron Williams is a possibility … the Knicks should end up getting one of those three players, and I think it’ll be Chris Paul.”
ESPN’s John Hollinger Monday night: “It appears the only realistic way that Paul can end up in Gotham would be if he is willing to take a massive pay cut. He would likely make about 60 percent as much in New York as he could make in New Orleans and, even in the best-case scenario, forego tens of millions of dollars compared to playing in other markets … So if Paul really wants to go to New York, he can go — as long as he’s willing to give up, at a minimum, forty million dollars to do it. (The same, incidentally, applies for Deron Williams or Dwight Howard.)
This little nugget from Hollinger will anger Knicks’ fans, but it’s exactly why I wasn’t thrilled when they gave up so much for Carmelo Anthony in February:
This is why I argued the Knicks overpaid in the Anthony trade with Denver rather than being patient and signing him outright over the summer — they have no assets left to make a deal for Paul, and yet from a financial standpoint, trading for Paul is the most realistic route to bringing him on board.
So which one of these guys a) Doesn’t understand the new CBA, b) knows something the rest of us don’t? As Andy Glockner notes, this smells like LeBron 2.0. He’s going to come to New York! Why? It’s New York!
November 29th baseless, don’t-ask-me-why-or-how predictions that, I can assure you, will change by 99.9 percent next week, and then by another 99 percent in January:
- Chris Paul to the Lakers
- Dwight Howard to the Lakers
- Deron Williams to the Heat
* Note: While I love Dwight Howard immensely, it makes zero sense to have a Anthony/Amare/Howard frontline. The Knicks need a point guard.

LETS GET WEIRD.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
I think Chris Paul is staying in New Orleans, though I kinda want him to end up somewhere else. A couple teams need to be contracted.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Hopefully the other guy in the photo ends up in Chicago.
Chris Broussard has about as much credibility as the ham sandwich I’m having for lunch.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
The NBA needs to get rid of a few teams. Charlotte, Toronto, and NO are the first teams that come to mind. Maybe one of the California teams like the Kings.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
IT’S ABOUT FUCKING TIME.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
can i offer you the cavs in this turd flush?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
I see your Cavaliers and raise you Memphis
November 29th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Aren’t the Cavs going to be better this year though? That one kid, the guy from Duke… uh… the one I thought shouldn’t have left early. You know, he got hurt…
The above shows how much I pay attention to the NBA outside of the United Center.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
I, for one, can’t wait for the return of the daily dumpster fire, Ballin’.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
WOW
November 29th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
should we have a preseason version?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:49 AM

Milwaukee is always left out of these conversations for some reason. I’m inclined to think its more because people forget Milwaukee has a team.
/Don’t take my horribly run, mediocre franchise!!
//Teams with new arenas (Charlotte/Memphis) would be pretty tough to contract, if contraction were feasible, which it’s not.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Toronto needs to stay.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Why the wow? I already ran out of leftover turkey. Ham was all I had in the lunch meat drawer this morning.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Did the Timberwolves merge with the Knicks without telling anybody? Timberwolves.com redirects to the NYKnicks.com page.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
should we have a preseason version?
I am actually really really shocked that you haven’t been all over the FA market and potential moves more TBL. I expected you to come out guns blazing coming up with theories and such on Monday.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Did the Timberwolves merge with the Knicks without telling anybody? Timberwolves.com redirects to the NYKnicks.com page
The whole NBA.com page is fucked up right now. I noticed this too earlier today.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
I don’t think players would ever allow contraction because that means less jobs for them, and owners wouldn’t do it, because all of these teams still appreciate in value every year.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Yes. Yes we should. Who needs cap space?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Anyone know when this deal is going to be ratified?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
I was actually hoping there would be a post explaining how this whole amnesty thing works. One of the few things I have interest in.
For example, are the Magic going to use it on Gilbert Arenas? Will it cause irishmafia to dance in the streets?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Current seasons moves haven’t happened yet, and we’re already predicting next year?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Pacers.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Current seasons moves haven’t happened yet, and we’re already predicting next year?
Are you unfamiliar with TBL’s 2012 NFL draft or March Madness predictions from 6 months ago?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Same here, when can Carlos Boozer be told to go away?
November 29th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Why would you want Boozer gone? He is as good of a small forward as you can find.
November 29th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
They just had Nick Friedell on the radio here, Butters. He’s the Bulls beat guy. Said there’s only a small chance the Bulls would use it on Boozer. Because there are 4 years left on his deal, they apparently still have to pay him the full contract value if they use this amnesty thing. That’s a lotta cash.
Again, not familiar with how it works exactly, but Friedell thinks it’s highly unlikely. Only move he thinks the Bulls make is a run at Richardson. He’d have to take a paycut to play here though since other teams can definitely offer him more money. Guys like Aaron Afflalo are a pipe dream as well.
One more Bulls note… he did say that Thibs’ primary goal is to make sure Noah and Booz can play cohesively on the floor at the same time this year. He’s got his work cut out for him I guess.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Chris Broussard is Sean Salsbury stupid.
/waiting for the “privlege to play for Knicks in Mecca of Madison Square Garden you don’t need money you will be king of NY” talk to start
November 29th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Souvy, answers both questions.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:00 PM
Current seasons moves haven’t happened yet, and we’re already predicting next year?
I am talking about posts about said moves. Lets wait 10 games into the season before we start talking about Timberwolves Lottery picks.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
they apparently still have to pay him the full contract value if they use this amnesty thing
Yes, my limited understanding is that you still have to pay the full contract, but it doesn’t count against the cap?
/could be wrong
//am probably wrong
November 29th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
when your owner’s blind and offering him an extension before his current contract’s up.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Thank you, Trey.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
Yeah! Like an update on the fluid Nene situation. Sup with that? Last I heard, Boston was willing to dump it’s entire team to sign him.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
OK. So if I read that thing right the amnesty provision doesn’t have to be used this year. It just has to be used on a guy currently under contract. So, the Bulls could potentially see how Boozer works out this season and then decide to waive him after the season if they don’t like what they see.
That’s gotta be the best option. That way, if they were to make that run at D12, they still could since he’s not UFA until after this season. I guess it leaves them wiggle room if Joakim Noah proves to be injury prone too. He could be amnestied later in the contract.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
I hate the way you are so sure of yourself.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I read that ESPN 5for 5 shit on Nene and the writers were saying ‘oh he is worth around 4yrs 60 million’ Hmm…might be contracts like that, that led to the lock out.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Again, not familiar with how it works exactly, but Friedell thinks it’s highly unlikely
The team has the one time amensty over the lifetime of the CBA.
So keep Boozer this year, if he fades as he did last year, cut him and sign Howard.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
No way do the Knicks get Paul. What’s the cap, 60? 70? Because with just FOUR players signed to their roaster next year (Amare, Anthony, Balkman, Douglas) our salaries still add up to $46 millions. So even if the Knicks somehow get Paul to take $6-7 million a season less than he’s worth, that’s still 5 players who take up the ENTIRE cap space. No back ups. Hard cap.
Death.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
- Deron Williams to the Heat
This wouldnt happen for the same reason Paul to NY wont happen. WAYYYYY too much money left on the table.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Gotta think the Sixers will use the provision on Elton Brand.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I think we dump Arenas, start working on trying to get another PG here. A team of Magic alumni (backcourt of Steve Francis and Penny Hardaway) beat a team of current players (backcourt of Jameer and Gil) a few weeks ago…
November 29th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Him and Lebron are gonna be awesome together in the Big Apple.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
when your owner’s blind and offering him an extension before his current contract’s up.
i’ll be DAMNED if i let you sit there and talk shit about Gordon Gund. he’s a SAINT damnit. he allowed the team to draft Lebron… LEBRON!!!
November 29th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Maybe the Knicks will use Amnesty on Amare.
/cries
November 29th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Has the trade machine been updated to reflect the new CBA?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Can’t you sign minimum-salary players to fill the roster no matter what the cap is?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
You should amnesty one of those guys. The one that sucks.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
- Chris Paul to the Lakers
- Dwight Howard to the Lakers
Me likey, but would prefer CP3 as D-Fish has gotten a bit long in the tooth. CP3 comes and I’ll be driving down the coast to watch me some games. Wait, I forgot my boycott of this ridiculous league and it’s bullshit commish…

it must be “needs reading comprehension refresher classes tuesday” here at TBL because i didn’t say a single bad thing about gordon gund…i was insulting boozer.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Chris Paul is coming to Phoenix. No one denies this. Nash has one short season ride and then bam CP3 runnin and gunning in the desert.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Yes, but then we still don’t have a center, three point guy, or any semblance of a good team. We have three good players…well, until Amare’s knees give way again around February.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
I think he just saw “blind” and wanted to make a Gordon Gund joke.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Hedo’s contract squeezes them for next offseason when guys like Williams and Paul are available, right? Gotta think he exercises that $12M option for the following year too. They could still get a 2nd tier guy though.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
Carmelo Anthony will still be the death of the Knicks. No one (except Knick fans) denies this.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I have no idea. Seems like they have been keeping it up to date though. For example teams still control the rights to players on expiring deals.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
It’s weird that you say that, because I’ve railed against the trade, and TBL – IN THIS VERY POST – sad it was a bad move.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Lebron and Paul are best friends. If he’s taking a pay cut it’s to join the Heat fiasco. He will not get traded there. The NBA still owns the Heat and won’t empower the Heat franchise further one iota.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
it must be “needs reading comprehension refresher classes tuesday” here at TBL because i didn’t say a single bad thing about gordon gund…i was insulting boozer.
just ball bustin brah. i was more so taking a shot at gordon for drafting lebron and allowing the subsequent heartbreak to happen. IT’S ALL GORDON’S FAULT!!!!
November 29th, 2011 at 12:15 PM
When is the “where in NY will Chris Paul buy a house” post going up?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
Also, D’Antoni probably needs to go. You can’t win in that system. I love the offense, but 117 – 110 games kill me.
However I have no idea who they would replace him with.
/please dont have a Phil Jackson post
November 29th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
CP3 may be leaving New Orleans, but NYC can forget it cause he won’t go there.
Actually, thanks to this new CBA, there’s a better chance that the Hornets keep Paul and can build around him. They’ve a ton of cap space and need to make moves to rebuild.
I’m interested to see TBL’s thoughts on the new amnesty system. Players can’t get cut, get paid, and go sign with whatever team they’d like anymore.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
The predictions subject to change in the post definitely concern me. It would allow me to root for Kobe again and getting that 6th title but Williams on the Heat means bad news for the Bulls. Just not sure how they could afford him with those 3 enormous contracts they’ve got. It would slow down the wheels completely falling off the Heat in 2013 because those 3 assholes have to log so many minutes without a suitable bench.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
the only way the heat get CP3 is if Bosh is traded.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Yea I could see one of those happening but not both. The Lakers have 60 million dollars wrapped in 4 players the next 3 years.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
The NBA needs to get rid of a few teams. Charlotte, Toronto, and NO are the first teams that come to mind. Maybe one of the California teams like the Kings.
*YAWN*
Contraction isn’t happening. Not now. The league wasn’t going to push it for it — the franchises are worth something. The players weren’t going to push for it — that’s 15 jobs that they’d be asking to disappear. And no fan wants their team to go away.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
You’ve got a bunch of guys under contract that are mostly disinterested in playing any defense at all. Doesn’t D’Antoni make complete sense? I’m not even trolling, that’s an honest assessment.
What good would a defensive coach be with players like A’mare and Cancermelo?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
I could see the Knicks getting Marc Gasol, and then him eating his way to “Eddy Curry Status”.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
TBL loves making predictions, documenting them, and re-linking to the 1/10 that come true. It’s a pretty good system actually.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
CP3 is by far my favorite player in the league and I want him to have great success, but the Knicks will not be the answer. I haven’t read any of the details with the new deal, but there is no way they can afford him and still build a contender. The Knicks ceiling is a 4 seed.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Well Alvin Gentry got the best season of Amare’s career out of him by getting him to focus on defense. Carmelo is a lost cause but Amare just needs the right coach, and coach D’Antoni is not that coach.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
That’s why they wanted to go to NY, but they need to play SOME defense. Outside of Amare or Turiaf getting the occasional block, there’s nothing there.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Reading stuff like that makes me sad that Bulls didn’t pursue A’mare instead of Carlos Boozer. He could have thrived with Noah doing the garbage man work plus he wouldn’t be the total defensive liability that Booz is.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Yep. Bulls wouldn’t be talking about Dwight Howard at all. Once Amare moved from playing in the 5 on D’antonis system to actually having a center and playing in the 4 he was a completely different man. Which is why I hate Robert Sarver.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
So… Knicks. Want to play let’s make a deal? Boozer and a #1 for A’mare? GET ME JAMES DOLAN ON THE PHONE.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Isn’t it great the NBA is back?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
There are going to be so many financial dominnos that have to fall before all this happens. The market forces are going to just murda the current UFA’s into smaller deals.
I really don’t see there being any complete teams, nobody will have the resources to fill out a team. San Antonio has the least holes but is decrepit old.
I think a wild card is if Norris Cole can be a serviceable #1 for Miami. The Heat will still get torched on the glass though.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Wouldn’t surprise me, but still a lot of money to eat there. Depending upon the season, Sixers will be 5-7 seed or will bomb and trade Iggy.
November 29th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Forget free agency, who is capable of being a bottom 3 team with a chance for the #1 pick?
November 29th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
If the Suns trade Nash(never going to happen) we got a shot.
