Remember When the SEC Hated the Idea of an Ohio State-Michigan Rematch in the Title Game?
LSU will play Alabama for the BCS Championship on January 9th. That’s decided. The outcome of the SEC title game this weekend matters not. This upcoming weekend in college football is meaningless (only two games mattered last weekend.) Even with a loss – LSU is favored by 12 – the Tigers won’t fall far enough in the lame BCS standings to get leapfrogged by Oklahoma State.
Why is 1-loss Alabama playing LSU? Well, as Stewart Mandel points out, there’s clearly an SEC bias, and a bias against all the other conferences and their teams who have been blown out in title games in the last decade. (Note: I don’t have an issue with this bias. My issue is the entire system, which is broken. Last year in the NFL playoffs, the Patriots were 14-2 going in and everyone had them in the Super Bowl. Good thing there’s no BCS in the NFL.)
But let’s go back to 2006. Remember when Florida was worried Michigan and Ohio State were going to meet in a rematch for the title? Here’s what Urban Meyer said that day:
“We’re going to tell a group of young men who just went 12-1 with the most difficult schedule against six ranked opponents that they don’t have a chance to go play for a national championship?” Florida coach Urban Meyer asked incredulously. “I’m going to need help with that one.”
Here’s then-freshman receiver Percy Harvin:
“Michigan already had its chance. I think we deserve a chance.”
And the best quote came from Florida President Bernie Machen (who is a playoff guy):
“If they don’t vote for us after tonight, we need a new system,” Florida President Bernie Machen said after the game. “We should be packing our bags for Glendale.”
All the 1-loss teams eligible to play for the title – Stanford, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State and Boise State, plus unbeaten Houston – should be parroting Florida’s 2006 responses. Alabama had their chance. I’d love to see Boise State, given a month to prepare, attack LSU’s defense. If Stanford got healthy in the next month, I’m curious how it would go at the best secondary in football. Ideally, of course, we’d see an 8 or 16-team playoff.

So since they did play in the title game proves the BCS worked right mr florida president?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
Can’t believe you left off the money quote from Saban circa 2003. If I were OKST I would be screaming from the mountain tops about him saying that no team deserves a shot at the national title if they don’t win their conference.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
You realize they aren’t going to win their conference, right?
/you probably don’t
November 28th, 2011 at 12:04 PM
because then we would’ve been cursed with philly and the pats? OH HEAVENS NO.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
I disagree.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
David Pollack suggesting that the SEC might have 3 teams in the BCS was funny, in that it can’t happen because its a against the rules.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
Last year in the NFL playoffs, the Patriots were 14-2 going in and everyone had them in the Super Bowl. Good thing there’s no BCS in the NFL.)
I don’t understand what point you’re trying to make here.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:05 PM
And you really need to drop this thought process…plenty of games mattered last weekend and this weekend for a variety of reasons.
Tell msu or Wisconsin fans that this weekend “doesn’t matter”
November 28th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
Bloodbath.
Part of me wants to see OKST get in and get waxed. This comes down to what you think the regular season is for. Is it to determine the two best teams and pair them in the title game? Or is it to find the two most deserving teams? If you want the best two teams, Bama is your guy. If you want the most deserving, that’s when OKST comes into play a bit more. However losing to Iowa State is such a terrible loss. It can’t be overstated.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
agree to a point, but the loss to Iowa State is pretty tough to ignore. that, and it’s Okie state, so no one outside of Indian Territory gives a shit,
November 28th, 2011 at 12:06 PM
My arbitrary, biased argument holds more water than your arbitrary, biased argument.
/all college football arguments this time of year
November 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Nevertheless…LSU and Alabama are BY FAR BY FAR BY FAR the two best teams in college football, probably more so than at any point during the BCS era.
Try as you might to discredit the BCS…but it’s going to get it right this year. Period.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
ALL OF THIS. Tell LSU that winning an SEC title means jack. Tell it to UGA. Same goes for Oregon, the two B10 teams and even Houston, playing for a BCS bowl. The “this week is meaningless” talk comes from people who aren’t CFB fans or who don’t understand the sport.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
plus unbeaten Houston
Houston is good, no doubt about that. But considering their schedule, I don’t see them having any sort of legitimate whiff of the National Championship game. If they had beat every team they faced by 40, then sure. But they played some fairly mediocre teams and struggled at times. But their offense is really exciting to watch*.
*if you don’t mind bubble screens, which I don’t.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Can’t they have a third if two are already in the NC?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
Ouch. Put that foot all up in your mouth, genius, If UGA wins and LSU and Bama are 1-2 then the SEC will have three teams in the BCS. The rule states only 2 “at-large” teams can be from same conference. Bama and LSU wouldn’t be at-large teams.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:08 PM
that, and it’s Okie state, so no one outside of Indian Territory gives a shit,
No more firewater for you.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
This is obviously wrong, as Oklahoma State still has a legit shot to jump to #2 if they beat Oklahoma. They have a much better resume than Alabama.
Also, Big 12 South > SEC West.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
False. If Georgia wins…it is going to happen. But Georgia isn’t winning, so, no, it’s not going to happen.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Average attendance of the 4 FCS playoff games this weekend: 9151.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
I was under the impression that, if UGA won, it WOULD happen if LSU/Bama remained at 1&2 in the BCS.

The Falcons would have been involved, Philly was the #3 seed…the Packers saved us all from having to witness that
Well their earlier game didn’t matter in hindsight despite the keeper of the CFB flame repeatedly beating the “every game counts!” drum
November 28th, 2011 at 12:09 PM
Can’t they have a third if two are already in the NC?
I was under the impression that only 2 teams from one conference are allowed to participate in the BCS. I’d be all for the third SEC team taking the BigEast’s spot this year though.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Falcons Pats.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
keep in mind that the guy who wrote this piece is now rooting for one of his team’s biggest rivals since their rival hired a head coach he doesn’t like anymore.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
in that case…THANK GOD THERE’S NO BCS IN THE NFL!
November 28th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I was under the impression that only 2 teams from one conference are allowed to participate in the BCS.
This rule no longer in effect? It fucked Wisconsin out of a BCS game a few years ago.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
This has to be some kind of joke, right?
But it did matter. If WIS won that game they would be playing for a shot at the national title.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
The problem is that Oklahoma State is not a name program. Pretty much every time there has been a controversy, the bigger name program has gotten the bid. Even if Stanford vs LSU is a better “story,” Alabama is more famous. Even if Oklahoma State “deserves” it more, Alabama is more famous.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
No, and possibly.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Not if Georgia beats LSU. Georgia gets the Automatic SEC bid, Bama and LSU would be BCS at-large teams. Its not against the rules.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
If two teams from the same team didn’t win their title, but are 1-2 in the BCS, they are NOT at-large teams. The rule states only 2 “at-large” teams can be from one league.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
so I take it someone showed the new guy where the key to the liquor cabinet is huh?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
the only thing that doesn’t matter is TBL’s dumbass opinion. the bottom line is TBL wants college football to be either the NFL or college basketball…he just doesn’t get it.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
1-2 aren’t at-large teams. They are automatically in.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
If two teams from the same team didn’t win their title, but are 1-2 in the BCS
College football is fucked up.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:13 PM
You left out the important detail that Michigan sucked.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
There is a singular exception that is 2 teams from the same conference are 1-2, and neither is the conference champ, then 3 can go.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
If Georgia pulls off the upset and goes to the SEC BCS bowl, doesn’t that mean that Alabama or LSU couldn’t go because that would be 3 teams from the same conference?
/honest question

I think it would happen if Georgia won on Saturday.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:14 PM
And you use 3 quotes from one team to justify the thought process of the entire SEC? Florida in 2006 is not the SEC. You think people want to see Bama back in the NC? Are you kidding me? LSU doesn’t want to play them again. Auburn doesn’t want them in. Etc Etc.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:16 PM
LSU and Alabama are BY FAR BY FAR BY FAR the two best teams in college football, probably more so than at any point during the BCS era.
Really? Neither one has a QB. I’d like to see USC play either one of these teams.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
What’s funny is that a couple years ago I was all about wanting a playoff. The more TBL/Duffy “play the payoffs” (nods at KC? Chief? forget who…) the more I’m firmly liking the bowl system. It’s a much better way to combine both ‘champion’ and ‘best team’ than if you let a team like Stanford, who completely laid an egg in the biggest game of their season, have a chance at a lucky upset.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
They’re #2 in 2 of 6 computer polls, and they closed the gap in all 6 human polls without even playing last weekend. They dominate Oklahoma, maybe they have a shot – their resume is better.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
The conference championship games have already begun this trend…if USC was eligible there’d be 3 rematches coming up this weekend, every game doesn’t even count for winning your conference anymore
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
TBL, the difference that year? There was a clear cut 3rd…and it was Florida.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
That’s the truth. Les Miles: “Let’s see…we can either play a team that knows us in and out and has as much talent as we do, or we can play OKST would couldn’t defend a paper bag. Choices choices choices.”
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
Except if the BCS system were in place, the Patriots would have been in the championship and no one would have doubted their legitimacy based on their body of work in the regular season, which is exactly the point of the BCS>
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM
My biggest problem with a rematch is that it does make the regular season a bit meaningless. The previous LSU-Alabama game had no bearing on the national championship as it turned out and only made getting there more difficult…for the winner.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:17 PM

November 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM
And you wouldn’t have some fraudy-ass fake wanna-be overrated pretty boy QB blowhard coach ref-buying holding island fraud of a team with a chance to win the Superbowl and make people think they were actually good.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:19 PM

This summarizes nicely how I went from being a partisan for playoffs, to accepting and even liking the current system.
/but seriously, get rid of pre-season polls.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I agree with the first part but I find the second half of this statement to be questionable at best.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Occasionally, yes. But at the time…do you think either team was in that mindset? No. Mindset that you have to win is a lot more important than knowing you can give one up.

Exactly. SEC fans bring this upon themselves when they chant their conference’s name.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Gonna quote that for truthiness
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
This would be hilarious, actually. I do think you’ll see each team open it up a bit more. Both of those teams thought the winner was done playing the loser and played so conservatively throughout save for one trick play by Bama. I’d expect a much more open game.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I’d like to see USC play either one of these teams.
Arizona State can be heard heartily laughing at this.
Vontaze Burfict isn’t laughing. He doesn’t laugh. He does this instead.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
I’m not for the wacky Wetzel 16-team nonsense that TBL supports, but I do have to point out that the BCS supporters keep changing their definitions for why things “work”.
I mean, when you bash Boise (or if you’re an SEC supporter, any non-SEC team) you always say it’s the resume that matters. You get what you’ve earned, and what you’ve earned is what you’ve accomplished this season.
Well, by that definition I don’t think Alabama has any clear right over several other teams.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:21 PM
My biggest problem with a rematch is that it does make the regular season a bit meaningless.
All the games are meaningless anyway.
/spins bow-tie
You all already rip into Walking Dead this morning? I thought last night’s episode was pretty good. Maybe its just because the weak Sophia plotline is over.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
That and they lost to a 6-5 team and have no wins to tout outside of Kansas State.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
The “Alabama gets bye and LSU plays” argument is only valid if people would vote Bama over LSU if the Tigers lose this weekend. Would that happen?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Modern-era USC has never had any problems with SEC teams. Probably why the SEC stop scheduling them
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
You all already rip into Walking Dead this morning? I thought last night’s episode was pretty good.
Save for the last 5 minutes, I thought the episode was terrible.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
So Texas will be 5th best (or is it 2nd worst)?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:23 PM

Why is OSU having the press conference at 5:15 instead of 6? 5 Star recruits don’t watch Around The Horn.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
Dexter and Boardwalk Empire always have to come first. I’ll save TWD for tonight.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
What I don’t get about the pro-playoff crowd, and there are a lot of them showing up on my facebook feed lately for some reason, is how they talk about how fraudulent the BCS is in the name of fairness, and then espouse a 16 team playoff as if ever, in the modern history of college football, there were 16 teams who could lay a fair claim to a national title.
It’s like when Boise went undefeated a few years ago (I think it was Boise) and one of their players was asked in the postgame if he thought they should be #1, and he said…no.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
No, but if they are clearly better than Stanford, OSU based on their season…
I actually don’t know if I think a re-match is okay. I just hate the 6 weeks off thing that just destroys momentum and tends (?) to give crappy games.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:24 PM
That episode should have happened 2 or 3 weeks ago.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:25 PM

November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
It only takes a minority to create the appearance of a vocal majority. Screw those SEC chest beaters. Plus, the only reason they’re saying that is because it’s uncouth to chant the South Will Rise Again.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I think that’s something we cam all agree on.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
I’m pro-playoff, but not 16 teams. I’d prefer 8, think you could get away with 12, but I’d just be happy with a plus-one.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
LSU and Alabama are BY FAR BY FAR BY FAR the two best teams in college football, probably more so than at any point during the BCS era.
not a chance. they are both very good, but not they are not well rounded enough to have that label.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
Hmmm, I think you missed the point. Most SEC fans don’t want to see LSU/Bama in the title game, because most SEC fans dislike both programs. But all SEC fans are quite aware that they both deserve to be there.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
If OKST beats OU (not really a given) I think they’ll have the best argument. You have to look at wins and losses for each team. What is OKST’s best win? What is their loss? Same for VT, Stanford and Boise. You can’t knock Bama not winning the SEC and ignore Boise not winning their league. Same goes for Stanford. If VT loses to Clemson you’ll only have OKST, but what if OKST loses? Houston’s schedule is pathetic. You have to punish them for playing no one worth a damn all year. Don’t blame the BCS for every other team losing. Someone has to play LSU after all.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
The BCS is supposed to pick the two best teams. So they got it right. Period. Move on. And I am scared to death to play Alabama again.
But I do suspect that if the NC consisted of some Ohio State/Michigan/Notre Dame/USC form of rematch, the media would be all for it–like they were in 2006. I guess rematches are bad because some guy in New York City didn’t like the lack of touchdowns in the first game.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Va Tech… Sorry, can’t keep a straight face typing that.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
More top 25 wins than Bama, or is this the part of the BCS strength-of-schedule debate where eventually everyone sucks other than SEC teams?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
Shane has transformed from a moderately interesting morally ambiguous character into the almost unbelievable bad guy. And Dale needs to die. Hide the guns? WTF? Seems like a bad play in the Zombie Apocalypse.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
The thing that gets me, is that in all the years of the BCS, talking heads spend so much time all season talking about “doomsday” and “what-if” and “chaos”… yet somehow at the end of the year, there are usually two deserving teams which are fairly obvious, and then there’s everyone else.
If they make a +1 format, TBL and Duffy will just spend all year talking about which 5th-ranked team is going to get screwed.
Or if TBL really gets his way, we can discuss whether 7-3 Cincy, or 6-4 Florida deserves the 16th spot this year.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
And how the fuck do they have Sophia in the barn and not let Rick’s group know? You know Herschel wanted them gone asap, and the only thing holding them there was Sophia, and you never fucking mention, oh by the way, we have a little girl walker in that barn that you now know about! Someone’s gonna have to explain that one to me.

I’m late to this thread, but could not agree with this more. You may not like it that the 2 best teams happen to play in the same conference and already played each other, but that’s too fucking bad. If the purpose of the BCS is to create a champtionship game between the 2 best teams, then LSU-Alabama is the only logical matchup.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
Not to make excuses or anything, but I wonnder if the Oklahoma State/Iowa State game turned out differently if it wasn’t played the day the team heard about the plane crash.
/and the refs called the FG good–which it was
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I think the best way for that to work is to have the 4 BCS bowls be the first round of the playoffs. Keeps the current system intact, and the stadiums will be full (or should be).
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
No because Rick Neuheisel is going to postpone his dismissal until after his Rose Bowl victory! UCLA! UCLA!
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
I could see this. They will also get a bump from voters who don’t want a rematch (much like Florida did over idle Michigan)
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Agreed. For some reason, everybody thinks all fans of SEC schools are SEC homers. Nothing could be further from the truth. I think the other 11 SEC schools were all rooting against Auburn last year, and vehemently so.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Haven’t seen TWD ending….but between Boardwalk and Dexter, there were several, “oh, fuck” moments last night.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Yeah Dale’s who I mean, I can never remember his name. I hate hate hate hate hate Dale.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
But it works so well in the NFL! NFL! NFL! NFL!
It works pretty decently in the NFL (definitely not perfect though). But part of the reason for this is that the NFL has centralized scheduling. Teams can’t decide their schedule, they can only win the games on it. But I just don’t think a playoff works in college because 1) conferences are horribly uneven in terms of quality and 2) teams can decide just how hard or how easy their schedule is. But this latter aspect provides a way for teams–like TCU–to move up in the world. If you commit to building a good program and recruit accordingly, and play a good schedule, you can get to the BCS. The pathway is open, its just that some schools don’t want to commit the time and effort to working for it.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
All of this. You think I want Kirby Smart coming into Georgia pimping another ring? Fuck that noise. I’m LSU’s biggest fan if Bama gets another shot at them.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
I was gonna go with Shannon from LOST.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
It’s easy. Look at who the Big 12 teams have beaten out of conference. Then look at who the SEC teams have beaten out of conference. The Big 12 is propped by some sloppy schedules. Their best win as a conference is 9-2 TCU, followed by 7-5 FSU…
November 28th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Otis never got to tell Herschel. Otis used to wrangle the zombies into the barn. Oh and fuck Herschel anyways.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
And Dale needs to die. Hide the guns? WTF?
In the first season I thought Dale could be a really interesting character. After watching him try to hide guns in the river (or wherever he was going) I’m pretty sure he has early-onset Alzheimer’s. I’m not even sure the thought process on that. Plot holes and such.
Still thought it was the best show of the season. Not saying much, but at least the show will move forward. Also, zombie killing is fun.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Hopefully that means she dies soon. Then Maggie can take her place.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I haven’t seen it yet, but I have a suspicion that he kills Richard in last night’s episode based on the clip from the preview where he’s shooting, because it’s nearly identical to the shot where Richard kills the Dalessio brother who’s sitting on the ground.
I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say the butcher got his revenge on Jimmy. And I don’t think he’s finished yet either.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
TWD has a serious problem with poignancy. What could have been a really good discussion about who is right for this world (Rick, Dale, Shane, etc.) fell completely flat. Like every other attempt.

Nobody actively pulls for their SEC brethren in the title games that I know of. But you have to understand one thing. There is a certain amount of pride when you hear people telling you that the Big Ten and Big 12 are just as good as you and then you win 7 straight championships. It’s kinda an F.U. to all those people more than a “YAY US!”
November 28th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
This is what only a few people are talking about. Bama lost ground in the polls that matter and that was with them waxing Auburn and OKST not even playing. If OKST puts a big number on OU, I could see a voter revolt.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Then look at who the SEC teams have beaten out of conference.
Alabama has beaten whom out of conference? At PSU? PSU was exposed for the frauds they were the last couple of weeks. LSU beat Oregon on a neutral field and a Big East team on the road. Better than Alabama, sure, but I’m not impressed.

Like I said Friday, here’s a guy who quit on the Falcons during the season and told his players with a form letter complaining about Les Miles’s ethic. FUCK YOU SIDEWAYS, DICK.
By the way, people bitched at Miles for kneeling against Ole Miss, and now they’re bitching at him for a garbage FG against Arkansas. Well…which is it?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Agreed.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Unfortunately, I’m of the belief that if you
-can’t win your conference
-can’t win your division within your conference
-can’t score a TD at home against a division opponent
-allow 21 pts and 350 yds by an FCS opponent
then you deserve no more shots. You’ve been eliminated.
Pac 12 was eliminated by LSU beating Oregon
Big 10 was eliminated b/c thy’re the big 10
The ACC got thrashed by the SEC over the weekend.
The Big east just sucks.
I know of no hard comparison of sec vs big 12 games this season (other than Ark having to stage a crazy comeback to defeat a crap Texas A&M team) to take the big 12 out of the loop.
I’m not a big 12 fan. Give them a shot ..
It’s a NATIONAL Championship, not a neighborhood championship.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Shit is gonna go down in these last two episodes.
For those of you that have seen TWD “finale”, will it make me want to continue watching the 2nd half of the season? I’m almost ready to bail.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
It’s kinda an F.U. to all those people more than a “YAY US!”
This is the perfect way of saying it. It’s not so much a cheer as it is a taunt.
But they act like their conference is being unfairly persecuted, when I don’t think anyone ever says they are anything other than the best football conference in the country. It’s like they have an unwarranted inferiority complex. Which is true because they’re Southern, but not because of the quality of football they play.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
I wasn’t really paying attention. But how the hell did those zombies get stuck in that swamp? What was the explanation behind that?

It runs so much deeper than football, dude. It’s silly as fuck (and racist to a degree) but it has a lot to do with the Civil War. The people down here cannot let go of that. So they use football as their weapon of choice to show off their strength. I’m not even kidding, by the way. It’s weird.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
I would be in favor of this being a pre-requisite. It would put a whole lot more emphasis on the regular season as well. The only thing is, say Georgia beats LSU and OU beats OSU. Who plays for the title?

More than you realize. Your comment is a bit frightful.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
\
There isn’t now, but there was in 2006. LSU won in 03 but everybody said USC was better. Auburn was locked out in 04 but it was okay because USC was better. Then they were on the verge of getting locked out in 06 because “It’s Ohio State and Michigan, of course. Two storied Big 10 programs!”
When LSU won in 07 it was gravy. By 08 when Florida won it was obvious. That’s when it stopped.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
LSU is in no matter what. Their resume is insane. Since every team has one loss (spare me Houston, people) they are still locked and loaded for the title game.

If the final BCS standings are released and Alabama is No. 2, Les Miles shouldn’t even bring his team to the title game. LSU has nothing to gain and everything to lose. He should say his boys are the national champs because they already beat their opponent at their house during the real season, and call it a season.

I think he’s going to grow up to be a serial killer. Remember earlier in the season when he supposedly talked back to a nun at his school? Nucky’s solution was to tell him “don’t do it again” and then gave him a dollar and told him to go to the candy store.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Sophia disappeared before they met anyone from the farm, right? So they would have no idea who she was or what she looked like. Unless they showed them a picture, I guess.
Bama and LSU probably are the two best teams, but to me, it’s kinda boring to watch two teams who already played this season and play each other on a fairly regular basis play again (especially if it’s another FG fest). Part of the excitement of the bowls is watching teams that don’t play that often go head-to-head.

Also, Georgia got rid of their old flag, then got a new one that didn’t honor the confederacy, and then the last governor got elected because he said he’d change it back, so now it’s kind of a mix of both the new and old.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
Is it your goal to continually prove yourself a moron? The SC state flag has nothing to do with the Confederacy.
Yes. But Ole Miss wound up in the Cotton Bowl that year, and kicked Texas Tech’s ass, and finished in the top 20. Iowa State will be in the lowest possible Big 12 bowl, and has zero chance of being ranked.

I think the tide really turned after 41-14 in the ’06 title game. People forget but Florida’s offense was pretty unimpressive in SEC play that year. They didnt top 40 pts in any of their SEC games, and didnt beat any SEC opponent by more than 19.

my bad… i meant S. Carolina flying the confederate flag on the grounds of their capitol building. I have no idea what their state flag looks like now. (palm tree, I’m guessing?)
Gotcha. South Carolina’s state flag has a crescent moon and a Palmetto Tree. The reasoning behind it is pretty cool. Early in the American Revolution, a British Fleet tried to force it’s way into Charleston Harbor. The militia built Fort Moultrie near the harbor entrance to defend against the attack. The fort was built out of palmetto logs which were the most readily available. Palmetto is spongier than normal wood, so the British cannonballs just bounced off the sides of the fort. The British fleet then gave up and left. So South Carolina adopted the palmetto tree as their state symbol in remembrance.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:50 PM
So, their body of work is clearly the best…
November 28th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
If I was a voter and Alabama squeaked out a win, I’d still vote for LSU because winning in Alabama during the course of a regular season means a hell of a lot more than winning on a neutral field a month and a half after your last game.
BCS voters are obligated for vote for the winner of the MNC game as the BCS champs, but the AP isn’t.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:51 PM
Bama’s pulling hard for VaTech this week. But honestly the last poll is completely different from the others. You will see teams jump other teams for no reason other than to create the 1 vs. 2 matchup. If OSU beats OU impressively, i could see them jumping idle Stanford, as well as VT even if VT wins (VT’s schedule is a joke and is too far down in the computers to even threaten for #3).

IMO, the best Alabama can hope for in the MNC is a split title. That would be all they deserve, and frankly, that’s still a bridge too far for me.

or northern idiots with nothing to do?
November 28th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Only Southern idiots clinging to the past.
If you reside in Georgia, I think I’d be careful about using the phrase “southern idiots”. Some people, the type that drink Budweiser and keep unlicensed and unmarked handguns on them at all times, might not like it.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Ouch. Serve some other inaccuracy up for us, please.
The inaccuracy I clarified before you jumped in with your snark? Sorry I’m not entirely up to date with the state flag of S. Carolina.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
They voted on contingencies last nite. Georgia is in the mix if they play LSU close. All signs seem to indicate that Arky is out.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Except that some of the flags were deliberately changed during the Civil Rights era to give the finger to those northerners who wanted their black people to go to school with them.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Probably best to throw out the SS uniform now grandpa.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
He who wins the BCS title gets the crystal ball, therefore he who wins it is the champion. Split titles no longer exist in my opinion.
I think UGA will play them close, actually. LSU’s offense doesn’t match up well at all with UGA. I just don’t see how UGA scores enough. I also think the special teams advantage for LSU is going to give them 7 points or more.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
I hope college football does get a playoff but it only includes the big boy conferences, so that idiots like TBL can have a new complaint about the playoffs not being good enough.

November 28th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Btw here’s what’s on the line for LSU this week. Keeping an undefeated season alive. Winning their 4th SEC title this century (more than anyone else). Beating Georgia, the only team in the SEC to have a winning record vs. Les Miles. A chance for one of the great seasons in modern CFB history. And they’ll be preseason #1 next year with a much easier schedule.
November 28th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Which is why we need to bring back the old system. To hell with Joe Casual Fan.

November 28th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
There’s a difference between earning a rematch by clawing your way past other deserving opponents in a playoff system, and being placed there by biased coaches and ADs who want to maximize ratings, money, and exposure.
The way CFB is currently constructed, there cannot be a rematch in a national title game because there would be no actual champion crowned.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Yeah…ok. The difference is Texas A&M was the best team you beat.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:01 PM

November 28th, 2011 at 1:09 PM
So, Lemme get this straight…Because Alabama lost to the number one undefeated team in the country…managed to win all their games before and after that…while others lost to teams that aren’t the number one team in the country, and don’t have the supporting wins that Alabama has from the computers and subjective POV…they haven’t earned a rematch by clawing past other deserving opponents?
Why have a regular seasont hen. We should just make all sport seasons a playoff…
(Checks construction)
The BCS puts the #1 and #2 team in the country based upon an agreed upon system by 11 FBS conferences to crown national champion.
Pretty much kills that argument.

November 28th, 2011 at 1:30 PM
Bama’s best “win” was taking LSU to overtime.
while i don’t think Bama should get another shot at LSU, it’s the only matchup where LSU stands a chance at losing. so if everyone is ok with watching OK St, VaTech, Stanford, Boise, or Houston get throttled in the NC game, then let’s do it.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:36 PM
I want OK State, but I’m going to get Bama. Thus I will root for OK State and LSU to both win by 30 in their bowl games, so it never happens again.
November 28th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
As an LSU fan, i want Bama. I believe Les Miles’ damn strong team will have a want to prove that the Nov 5 game was not a fluke. I dont think the motivation would be as high given a different opponent, though I agree the chance for victory would be higher.
November 28th, 2011 at 2:13 PM

It’s amazing how Alabama supporters have managed to change the narrative so that a “good loss” is perceived to be more important than “quality wins.”
Alabama has one quality win — Arkansas. Arkansas has beat exactly one ranked team — South Carolina — which in turn beat only one ranked team — Georgia — which in turn beat no ranked teams. See how this SEC bias thing works?
OSU has better wins, a better schedule, and plays in a better conference. If they beat OU, they will have won their conference and finished with the same number of losses as Alabama. Now, in what world is Alabama more deserving, especially considering they already lost to the title game’s other participant!
If the situation was reversed and Alabama was in OSU’s shoes, they’d be pulling the gray uniforms out of the closet.
