The Jets Are Going to Miss the Playoffs, But That’s Not a Bad Thing. Changes Are Coming (But Not Sanchez – Not Yet)
Denver 17, New York Jets 13. Before diving into this, I suggest reading the 2011 preview where I wrote the Jets made too many changes in the offseason and would regress in 2011.
* Quick thoughts on the Denver loss: The offense was embarrassing (I’ll get to the OC, the offensive line and Sanchez in a minute),and the defense was brilliant until Denver’s final drive. If you’re going to have a season go down the tubes, I’d much rather it be to a class act like Tim Tebow than any other QB in the league. I know everyone’s slurping Tim Tebow this morning for the 95-yard TD drive (wasn’t it fun when Jim Leonhard nearly tackled Eddie Royal in the end zone for a safety on the first play?), after lambasting him a few weeks ago. The kid is clutch.
* Oh, back to the defense: I was not surprised Denver scored a TD on that drive. The Jets’ defense, for whatever reason, has had enormous trouble getting a big stop in a big spot since that AFC title game loss to Pittsburgh. Failed to get a stop against the Patriots in the 4th quarter in the first meeting this season. New England kicked a field goal and put the game out of reach. Couldn’t get a stop against the Patriots in the 2nd meeting at the end of the half or when the Jets cut the lead to seven in the 4th. Rex’s defense has slipped in 2011.
* Denver had six first downs and 134 yards (I think) going into that final drive. New York used a 3-4 defense to bottle up Denver. Why switch to a nickle package on the final drive?
* This is the worst regular season loss for me as a Jets fan since Dan Marino’s fake-spike TD pass in 1994.
* [FIXED] Yes, it is somewhat ironic Mark Sanchez tried to do that on the final drive OF THE FIRST HALF – he had a good read; nobody was on Keller – but he made the wrong call. There wasn’t enough time left. Sanchez should have spiked it so they’d have one more play, then a timeout, and then one realistic crack at the end zone (or a Nick Folk field goal attempt).
* Von Miller is a terror, and along with Elvis Dumervil, the Broncos have one of the best pairs of young DEs in the league. But this should have been a flag.
* I see plenty of, “the Jets are 5-5, they aren’t dead yet!” reaction. True, the Jets were 4-6 in Rex Ryan’s first season, and then peeled off five wins in six games to sneak into the playoffs at 9-7. But a history lesson: that was the year the Colts rolled over in the 2nd-to-last game and benched Peyton Manning in the second half. The Jets took advantage of Curtis Painter to win, 29-15. The following week, the Bengals – locked into a playoff spot – basically did the same and lost, 37-0, allowing the Jets to lock up a playoff berth. So I urge you – just stop, guys. The SEASON IS OVER. Yes, the Jets are only 1-game out of the Wild Card hunt (regardless of who wins the Bengals/Ravens game) but they are far too inconsistent to make the playoffs and they have too many injuries. Also worth noting: They suck at football fundamentals – clock management, penalties, turnovers.
* After sleeping on the loss, I’m already over it. No playoffs will certainly mean that hopelessly clueless offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will be jettisoned. Frankly, I’d consider making the move this week (Happy Thanksgiving, you bum!) along with cutting Eric Smith, who is only the worst starting safety in the NFL. Brodney Pool should be healthy for their next game.
* I already have eyes on 2011 2012. 1) Woody needs to open his wallet. Why would you stay $9 million under the salary cap with a team that just went to two straight AFC title games? 2) Please get a creative offensive coordinator. I need more time to come up with names, but I really do like Marty Mornhinweg. 3) The primary need in the draft, clearly, is the offensive line. Wayne Hunter absolutely cannot be a starter next season. 4) My thoughts on Sanchez – yes, he’s going to continue to have happy feet in the pocket if the line keeps collapsing. You could see it against Baltimore and New England, and everyone knows the way to rattle him – get to him early and he starts to panic because he doesn’t want to get clobbered. Hopefully, he’ll flourish with a rebuilt line and under the new OC and then you extend his contract. 5) If those changes don’t result in some improvement, well, Sanchez won’t be getting another contract.

This is true, and so has the o-line. They can no longer carry Sanchez like they did in ’09 and ’10.
Damn shame he can’t return the favor.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
/giggles uncontrollably
Why is it that you can’t realize what many outside observers have said since Day 1…Sanchez will never develop into a quality QB. Especially considering he was drafted 5th! 5th!
November 18th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Reavis on the Tebow td run was like the island on “Lost”– was there and then it wasn’t
November 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
This made me laugh.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Will he bring a quarterback with him>
November 18th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
The OC for the Jets is terrible. Holmes and Burress are deep-route receivers, but it seems like he only has them doing slant routes, or curl (which gets picked) ones. This is a waste of talent IMO.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
TEBOW TEBOW TEBOW
November 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
They gave up ONE touchdown and ONE field goal last night. Score more points and tell your offense to stop giving up turnovers for points.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Von Miller is unreal.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
James Ihedigbo cheers!
November 18th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
They gave up 3 points until that last drive. 3 points. Broncos had great starting position all night. I don’t really know what else you want from the D. It’s the NFL, you can’t stop a team every single time. This game 100% On Sanchez. Period.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
MILLER MILLER MILLER!
The real hero last night. The sack he had on Sanchez in the 4th quarter was a thing of beauty.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
Not as much as this made me laugh:
November 18th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
The STATS say so.
November 18th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
He’s legit, absolute monster.

Hire Gus Malzahn, maybe trade for Joe Thomas and sign Carl Nicks and trade up in the draft for Trent Richardson. Boom: Lombardis.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
November 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Anyone listening to Mad Dog radio right now? The radio guy actually said that Decker is holding Tebow back. I think I almost drove off the road I was so pissed.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I knew Miller was good in college, but did anyone really predict that he would have this kind of impact in his first season? I sure as hell didn’t see this coming.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
You think the Eagles are firing him?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
If you’re going to have a season go down the tubes, I’d much rather it be to a class act like Tim Tebow than any other QB in the league.
This will be even funnier when Tebow isn’t a QB or in the league in a couple years.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:01 AM
/replays gif of Sanchez flinching over and over
November 18th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
Agree. While the defense has slipped, they are still a Super Bowl caliber unit. They allow 10 points last night; the offense allowed 7.
It’s lame that TBL is willing to throw the defense (i.e. 2010 AFC championship) and o-line (with two Pro Bowlers) under the bus so easily to defend a severely mediocre QB.
And I think that Plaxico has actually been a signing that worked out well for the Jets. He started slow, but has picked things up recently, or am I off-base here.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:02 AM
now that’s something i can agree with.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Every Broncos receiver kept coming up with huge chunks of dirt/grass stuck on their helmets trying to dive for Tebow’s atrocious passes.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
The spin in this room is making me dizzy.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
John Skelton has also led late game-winning/tying drives the last two weeks while looking like ass the rest of the game…where are his clutch accolades?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
Miami, kansas City, Oakland (Palmers 1st start), and Jets team that Just played Sundya night
Damn that Tebow is the greatest!!
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I’m amazed that you can’t just admit Sanchez isn’t very good.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:03 AM
I can’t wait for Francesa this afternoon.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Everyone is so quick to call for the OC to be fired because, among reasons – he won’t let the QB open things up, but what this seems to always be forgotten : the coaches see these guys practice everyday, they know more than anyone what the QB is or is not capable of. Maybe they see in practice that Sanchez is a limited skills QB, hence they don’t feel comfortable opening up the offense for him because they feel he can’t handle it. They have weapons – Holmes, Burress, Keller – if they had a QB capable of utilizing them they’d clearly be a better than 500 team and wouldn’t lose a game like last night, letting Denver stick around. Yes the defense allowed that final drive but this team 5-5 because they don’t have a QB who can make throws and use weapons in order to win games consistently.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I think he’s assuming that Andy is gonna be fired after the season and there’s going to be a clean sweep.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
I can’t wait for Francesa this afternoon.
I have a timer set to remind me.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
Holmes and Burress are deep-route receivers
I am not sure what Plax is at this point. Besides, they do not trust Sanchez to throw a deep ball to anyone that is not wide open.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
What’s up with Tebow’s voice? Does Dr. Drew’s theory of “girls who were abused at a young age have voices that sound like their voices at the age at which they were abused” apply to males too?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Forgot the “/Howie Roseman” tag
November 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Skelton didn’t exactly lead Fordham to a national championship in 1-AA or win a Heisman either. But yeah, Skelton should be getting some more due…
November 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
There is not a thing TBL can write to convince me otherwise. Sanchez is problem a-y what is wrong with this team. Shonn Greene went down and Joe McKnight comes in and performs admirably. The line wasn’t that good last night, but tough, they weren’t the reasons that he threw his second soul crushing int returned for a td in a week. Fuck this kid….
Woooossaaaaa
November 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
Sanchez was almost Derek Jeter in this town, but not really.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
The “sky is falling” posts after Jets’ losses are the best on the best thing on this site
November 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Dude…TBL just knows, though. He knows Sanchez can make the throws because he saw him do it in 16 starts at USC.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Von Miller is good and everything but calling Hunter a turnstile is an insult to turnstiles.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Take him off our hands. I kind of miss the I-Formation.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Broncos need to trade for Percy harvin or someone like him, it would put a spark into their college-style offense.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
If your QB only performs adequately under the most ideal of conditions then he’s not much of a quarterback.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
And when they beat the Dream Team in a few weeks, we’ll get “HERE COME THE JETS!” posts.
/guaranteed
//it’s always about the Jets
November 18th, 2011 at 11:08 AM
after seeing sanchez play for a few years, i knew he reminded me of someone. after last night, i got it. david carr. the teeny YPC, low completion percentage, inability to carry a team.
sanchez is david carr with a better d and running game.
in short- sanchez is not good, and if you are jets fan, you need someone else or you are pretty much shit.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
WTF? You have to be joking, right?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Season is not even close to over. Jets should be favored in the next three games. They have absolutely got to roll into Philly at 8-5 though.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Greg McElroy > Mark Sanchez
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
What Auburn misses is a defense that doesn’t give up 40 points to top-20 teams.
/completely serious
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
The Jets are totally making the playoffs.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Honestly, I hope the Jets beat the Eagles at this point, and they probably will. Or a tie…that would be all new levels of ineptness.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Yeah, the offensive line stuff gets a little tiring when good quarterbacks like Rodgers were able to absorb 50 sacks in 2009 and still manage 4,000 yards and 30 TDs…when he can’t even hit Holmes on the quick hitter to the outside right after the snap, that’s his problem
November 18th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Can’t wait for Bears to get their hands on Tebow in 3 weeks.
He’ll be having dinner with Jesus that Sunday.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
ok, i’ll try to reply to the civil comments.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
today’s word is “effortability”
November 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
weren’t they favored last night, too?
i’m not saying they are going to lose every game, but they don’t even hold any tie breakers with other teams in the WC hunt, do they?
if they had a full strength running game, they probably win last night though.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
You think the Eagles are firing him?
I think he’s assuming that Andy is gonna be fired after the season and there’s going to be a clean sweep.
Andy is staying and moving Marty to D-Coordinator
November 18th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Exactly. They got away with a bad defense last year because they were going to score 28 points on a bad day. When Cam left it meant they needed to hold teams to certain numbers, and at this point AUB has proven they can’t really do that under Roof (and Chizik). I was told Malzahn invented offensive football last year, so surely Richt’sLeftNutIsSmarterThanChizik is joking.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
The play calling in NY is abysmal. There is absolutely zero creativity with the offense. I put more of the blame on Schottenheimer than Sanchez. They’re not even trying to throw the ball downfield. The opposing secondaries can cheat up as they don’t have to worry about being beat deep.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
What kind of deal will the Jets have to offer to get Peyton?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
I think the question of the day is if you were building a team, who would you rather have: Tebow or Sanchez? I can’t give an honest answer either way.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
yup. he won’t even try a deep pass to holmes. of course you need protection for that …

Stubbornness.
Mayock was really tearing both QBs a new one last night, loved it. Refreshing to hear real analysis.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Tebow just gave the Bengals a lot of cushion, I appreciate that. I’ve turned a corner on him.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
There is absolutely zero creativity with the offense. I put more of the blame on Schottenheimer than Sanchez. They’re not even trying to throw the ball downfield.
As mentioned above, the OC probably understands the QB’s strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. Says more about the QB than the OC that they don’t take shots down the field.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
This would be hilarious, please extend him. Then the o-line and defense can continue to make him throw horrendous pick sixes.
Julius Peppers is going to make his life miserable and I can’t wait
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
i like Tebow as much as the next guy, but come on. not sustainable. Broncos are enjoying the ride.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Maybe get Ryan to keep that big, fat trap of his shut during the preseason to avoid building overhype.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Tebow or Sanchez?
Is death an option?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I know. And the Jets lost to a team that wasn’t as talented as them. One turnover pretty much made the difference in the whole thing. I mean, if you had a gun to your head, do you think the Chiefs, Bills, or Redskins should beat the Jets. They have to “and will” get through that stretch at 3-0. Then comes the hard part.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
I think the question of the day is if you were building a team, who would you rather have: Tebow or Sanchez? I can’t give an honest answer either way.
Cam Newton
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Love Mayock (and his daughter). Wish he was on a major network doing NFL every week instead of those golden domed d-bags in South Bend.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
And a QB who can make the throws. Why is this so hard to accept? You’re not fucking the dude. He’s the QB of your favorite team. You don’t owe him anything.
If that’s the only choice I have I’d tak Sanchez. You simply have to be able to throw the ball to win in the playoffs because you’re not going to face shitty teams. While Sanchez is a bottom-tier QB, he can at least complete a pass when given time. Tebow hasn’t proven that yet.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
jets were down 27-21. needed a stop. giving up the FG and repeated 1st downs = game over.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Sanchez was better when he was left handed and named Matt.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
And an accurate quarterback…not a guy completing 56% of his throws this year, this isn’t 1970s football, that isn’t good at all
November 18th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
that’s typically an indication of poor QB ability if they can’t call plays to stretch the field.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Tebow or Sanchez?
RBIII
November 18th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
They’re both not very good is what I was trying to say. Timmy can’t throw to anyone consistently and Sanchez can’t throw to his own team consistently.
The Jets offensive line is just fine, too. There’s several teams in this league that would like to have what they have up front.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
I thought Matt Leinart was starting for the Texans this week. Why was he wearing #6 for the Jets last night?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Mayock was really tearing both QBs a new one last night, loved it. Refreshing to hear real analysis.
And that was about it, otherwise he was lost and sounded like the narrator on the honey badger video
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Think the Bills could win, but I agree, Jets are 8-5 going into Philly, need split with Eagles/Giants and win @ Miami. But is 10-6 good enough? No tie break with Oak or Den, too soon to figure Cincy, maybe San Diego is the tied team.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
What kind of sacrifice are we talking about? I’m willing to go as big as a giraffe. If it requires human… I mean, I’m sure Sanchez has some Aztec in him…
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Indeed
November 18th, 2011 at 11:18 AM
Is there creativity in GBs offense? You don’t need creativity when you can throw the ball accurately and on time. You don’t need razzle-dazzle shit when you can read a defense and make the proper throw.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
This is an embarrassing question. The Broncos are structuring a temporary, makeshift offense around him and will dump him or send him back to the bench when they find a new starter for next year.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
What? Huh?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
What Auburn misses is a defense that doesn’t give up 40 points to top-20 teams.
Truth … Fire Roof yesterday. He’s terrible.

November 18th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
i could see a loss to the bills if the jets offense doesn’t pick it up. The defense is going their part, mostly, but they need better play on special teams more so than offense at this point, because FG’s should be automatic, and you can’t, right now, rely on Sanchez to do it all.
i’ll definitely agree Chiefs and Skins are wins, aside from extremely bad turnovers.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Brodney Pool should be healthy for their next game.
This will be on his tombstone.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
And the Jets receivers are plenty open. Plax and Santonio were open enough. Mierda is just too erratic to make it pay off.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
If they win the division at 8-8, I don’t think there’s any way they can do this.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
And the Jets are doing what with Mark Sanchez?
Hint: Running a limited playbook, being forced to overcome turnovers that result in points and field position for the other team and realizing a 55% completion rate isn’t getting it done.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Well played sir
November 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Again, this is on Sanchez. It’s his 3rd year as a starter, they haven’t opened up the offense more than likely because the coaches know they can’t trust Sanchez to make the reads and throws, which he probably fails to do in practice. He can’t his a wide-open Holmes on that slant and Jet fans want them to open things up more? Come on man!
November 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
I get what you guys are saying here, but at what point CAN you blame a coordinator? Isn’t there some middle ground between “the OC sucks” and “play-calling reflects the ability of the players”? Does Mike Mularky get blame for calling that run up the middle on 4th down against the Saints last week? But maybe that play works every time in practice. Maybe he doesn’t trust Matt Ryan to make a good throw in that situation.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Exactly. On the slant pass inside the 10 Holmes was wide open and walks into the endzone, but the Mexigod couldn’t get the ball there.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
Husker, or the pick 6. McKnight is streaking down the sideline, beating his man on a wheel. Sanchez didn’t even make a progression. He was throwing at Plax no matter what. Just awful.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
You can blame one if they try to put a square peg (Matt Ryan) into a round hole (airing it out like Rodgers).
November 18th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
I didn’t hear the post-game comments from Rex last night so I have to ask: How many of Sanchez’s plays did Rex call retarded? Had to be 5 or 6 right?

The line for Oregon/USC is 14.5, huh?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Hef, just putting on a clinic today.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Jersey – sadly, Sanchez has regressed because he knows he has maybe 2-3 seconds tops to get passes off before getting clobbered. he doesn’t have time to get to 3rd or 4th reads.
how about that 1st drive of the 2nd half? Where was that all night? why did they just abandon that?!?!?!?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
Come on, TBL. Where you hiding? Only 3 comments or something like that? I just hope you’re rocking a Sanchez jersey right now. That would be awesome.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
here’s the thing. the play calling isn’t that bad because it has proven to be effective, it’s the execution and decision making when the pressure is on sanchez that is causing problems.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Are you his agent, or do you know his agent? You simply can’t admit he has a (rather low) ceiling. Hell, even Atlanta fans have come to grips with what Ryan can and can’t do.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:28 AM
Here’s how you know Sanchez is the problem: he makes New England’s secondary look competent.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
The past 3 – 4 games, the Jets always start off that hot. And then eventually, they don’t get that hot again. But he missed McKnight on the pick. He missed Santonio walking into the endzone. He overthrew Plax- who was open- right before the pick. You call Von and Dumervil two really good pass rushers, well guess what, they aren’t going to not hit Sanchez at some point. They gave him plenty of time on the pass to Keller in the endzone, and it was too high and Keller had to land out of bounds because of exerting himself to catch the football. I hate that you see this differently, but Marky Mark has to take most of the blame for this.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
Here’s the crux of the argument, and why this will never be resolved.
TBL views one drive as Sanchez’s norm, and everything else as outliers, while everyone else views this as the anomoly and not the norm.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Cutler makes plays and has to worst offensive line in football. Give it up.

It’s just a little air born; it’s still good.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:34 AM
I tweeted this the other night. For the picks we traded for Sanchez, the Jets could have had Freeman with the 17th pick (exactly) where he was taken and Lesean McCoy witht he 52nd (taken 53rd). Arrrrggghhh.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
Shouldn’t the BBQ Pig actually be this instead?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:35 AM
I need to go take a walk. Jets better win their next 3 games.

His accuracy – or lack of it – is something else. I can see why they wouldn’t trust him to throw a deep ball.
At least the President’s Cup was on last night to provide some good sport-related tv.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:38 AM
no thanks. been there, done that.
the Favre experiment would have set the franchise back even further if they didn’t pick up Rex & draft Sanchez.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Guess who is telling Cutler what to do? Mike Martz.
You know what he’s accomplished, right?
oh, and Matt Forte is that offense. he’s better than any skill player the Jets have. by far.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:40 AM
Now you’re just being funny. Bravo.

November 18th, 2011 at 11:41 AM
Won a superbowl as a coordinator? Been to two? And Cutler actually went to Martz and asked for some liberties with the offense and got them.
And if Manning is available, get me Manning damn it.
/hits table
//storms out of door
November 18th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
You’d hate the Jet offensive line even more if Martz was the coordinator…the Bears didn’t start playing well until Cutler literally told Martz to fuck off with his shit offense
November 18th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
None of this happens if Sanchez doesn’t wear flip-flops to his interview with Rex…
November 18th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
You’d think a guy who runs a super popular sports blog would know that. Martz’s offense damn near killed Cutler to the point where Jay literally told him to fuck off and change the scheme.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
In retrospect, Belichick-Martz might have been the biggest coaching mismatch in Super Bowl history…use Marshall Faulk as a decoy the entire game? BRILLIANT!
November 18th, 2011 at 11:44 AM
actually, butters, i LOVED the pairing from the outset.
http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2010/02/02/reasons-to-like-the-jay-cutler-mike-martz-union/
i picked the Bears to go far last year and won $ on them.
(i did think they’d regress & the D would be older … but they have been great this year)
November 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
Why does Sanchez look slightly taller than Doug Flutie out there? I think they’re lying about his height.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:45 AM
I picked NYJ last night because of the defense… I’m pretty sure that 10 of those 17 points came against the offense (and a 13 yard punt).
+1 for young Butters.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:46 AM
Oh I’m not defending Sanchez. My problem is that I thought McKnight was pretty effective last night, yet the run:pass ratio was still 28:40.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:47 AM
TBL. Are you serious with these excuses? Im wating for you to come out and say HA!! just messing with you guys? I mean really…
November 18th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Jay Cutler: Leader.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:48 AM
Did anyone hear the “TBL” mention on Dan Patrick show this morning? Said TBL “picked up on” what they were saying with the Should PennSt. accept a bowl bid or not…
November 18th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
All that means is that you have no basis then for not understanding why he’s been a bad fit for that team…I believe his contract is up after the year and people around the Bears don’t expect it to be renewed so maybe you can get your wish next season
November 18th, 2011 at 11:50 AM
This is the problem a lot of teams have. Usually it’s the ones with competent QBs, but it’s still a problem. No matter how good you are passing the ball, you always need to run. The Patriots kill me when they get too pass happy and put Brady in the shotgun all the time. The Eagles have LeSean Friggin McCoy and don’t bother to run the ball. You’d think that after Elway and Manning couldn’t win shit until they got a RB, that teams would stay away from 65%+ pass rates.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
Martz O got Bulger destroyed in St Louis and it almost got Cutler killed as well. Cutler is a solid QB, Sanchez is not. The guy cant make the throws. Period. They see him in practice, they cant open the play book cuz he sucks. You think if Rex thought they should open the playbook they wouldnt???? Get real. The homerism on this site is nauseating
November 18th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Andy Reid is smarter than everyone else and doesn’t have to explain himself and his decision to give Shady the ball 30 times over the past 2 games…
//blows brains out
November 18th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Lovie retains his friends. Martz will likely return.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
LeSean Friggin McCoy
whom?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
That’s unfortunate, there’s a time where a team should listen to the QB’s input…it’s like he only has one system and refuses to tailor it to the personnel
November 18th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
How come TBL is literally the only member of the media blaming the O-Line, what does he know that everyone else doesnt?
November 18th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Does TBL have any knowledge of sports besides the NBA? How did this site sell?

World Wide, I think you’ll see a helluva lot more of McCoy (and interceptions) this weekend if Vince Young starts.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
martz is an incredibly stubborn guy, he can draw up some good plays, but he’s not one to take outside opinions very well and his teams can suffer for it.

November 18th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
If you don’t see the difference between “not throwing the ball 30+ yards downfield” and “throwing out your entire playbook and installing a modified option to fit a temporary QB that is unwanted by both the coach and GM”, I’m not sure what to tell you.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:59 AM
They can get Norv Turner when SD shitcans him after the season.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:01 PM
How come TBL is literally the only member of the media blaming the O-Line, what does he know that everyone else doesnt?
that’s not true at all. Everybody has been calling Wayne Hunter overmatched all year, and they’ve been calling Brandon Moore a journeyman. It’s not news that the right side of their line is atrocious, or that their O line bench is even worse. I’ve read that on FO and Grantland, and PFT. Everybody’s been bagging (and rightly so) on Hunter all year.
November 18th, 2011 at 12:01 PM

he would do a good job there. I’m actually hoping Dallas hires him back to call plays, since they both run the exact same offense, and Garrett can concentrate on game situations.

For what it is worth, Football Outsiders have Jets O-line ranked 19th in pass protection through last week. Adjusted Sack rate of 7.5% The best this year is Buffalo at 2.7%

Hey TBL, I get that you mostly watch your Jets, but their Oline is pretty good all in all. Obviously Hunter is a weak spot, but they have 2 All Pros on it, which is 2 more than most other teams. Rodgers, Ben, Cutler are qb who have had far worse OLines, yet done considerable more than Sanchez. But they are good a QBing.
Regarding Shotty, its clear he has no confidence in Sanchez to make a good read and throw more than 10 yards down field. It’s why he is calling all those draws, screens, slants and other plays with plenty of checkdown options. He may need replacing, but much of his offense is caged by his QBs limitations.

Speaking of which, my fiancee and I have had to go to a few pre-wedding marriage classes at our church. The one this week was on Natural Family Planning. The lady giving the lecture used the phrase “vaginal mucous” so many times, I lost track. And the presentation was in the auditorium of the attached school, complete with prominent crosses on sides of the stage. It was an interesting experience.

when he does think (sanchez), he shows a real flair for the idiotic. I’m not sure he has progressions, honestly. i think he has a primary and a checkdown. I think that’s all they let him do. With so much visible frustration from Ryan and Schotty, it’s obvious that they blame Sanchez.

If Sanchez can’t execute the plays currently being called, why should the OC open up the playbook for him?
November 18th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
This is laughable. Meaning, I literally laughed out loud when I read this. If they pick up Rex and then trade for a competent QB, guess what? The Jets probably have a Super Bowl, as opposed to the meaningless guarantees Rex makes every year (not to mention his mythical Chargers titles).
November 18th, 2011 at 12:53 PM

This made me laugh. Then, I suppose, the Chargers hire Schottenheimer the Younger as head coach. Dang, the circle is unbroken!

November 18th, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Now the Jets line is the problem? It been considered the best unit on the team for years. The line doesnt stink (Football Outsiders has them 17th); Sanchez does. He can’t read a defense, he can’t make NFL throws, and he can’t come up big when he needs to.
You could have put a RB under center last night, rushed every play, and not lost that game. Sanchez threw a pick six against a team that could not do shit on offense. Cardinal sin. 100 percent of that loss is on Sanchez.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:58 PM
Woody shouldn’t be such a cheap ass bastard. They are close to having all the pieces. But they are also close to being a 7-9 team in 2012.
