Joe Paterno Has Lung Cancer

Joe Paterno has lung cancer. Paterno’s son, Scott, made the announcement in a statement to the Associated Press today. Paterno is undergoing treatment and doctors are optimistic.
“As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment,” Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.
Paterno will be 85 next month. He was fired on November 9th in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

A grad assistant told him he probably had lung cancer in ’02 and Paterno went to the university president with the info but never saw a doctor about it.

MMonast, between my maternal grandparents, my first mother-in-law, my ex-wife and both her parents, I too have been around enough oncologists and diagnoses to know when a doctor tries to be encouraging. Still, the attempt to encourage can be sobering. Cancer is a bitch.
