Jim Boeheim on Bernie Fine: “There’s Absolutely No Way I Believe Any of This Could Have Possibly Happened”
Pete Thamel of the New York Times has already gotten a statement from coach Jim Boeheim, and he took a very strong stance on the investigation into allegations of molestation against his long time assistant, Bernie Fine.
I’ve known Bernie Fine for 45 years, and there’s absolutely no way that I believe any of this could possibly have happened,” he said. “That’s the bottom line.
Since the story broke earlier this evening, the University has already placed Bernie Fine on administrative leave tonight while they investigate the additional allegations. Boeheim has really put himself out there with this statement. He could have offered something more along the lines of “I support Bernie based on what I know at this time, and hope that the University conducts a full and fair investigation.” It sounds like the University has done its due diligence based on what we know so far, so this statement takes an unnecessary personal stance from Boeheim.
I talked about sexual abuse earlier today regarding this not being just a Penn State problem. People rarely believe a perpetrator, particularly someone they know, is capable of such things. Bernie Fine may be innocent. He may be guilty. Boeheim wasn’t with him every minute of his life.
The most recent allegations have re-surfaced because a second accuser, a relative of Bobby Davis, has also come forward. We should view this with skepticism but with seriousness. We should also not discount a witness outright because they did not come forward in the past: dealing with sexual abuse is difficult. Real victims don’t always come forward right away or at the first opportunity.
This is not the Penn State situation–an indictment, an eye witness, multiple unrelated victims who provided information, more recent victims. If the investigation leads to nothing more, it may ultimately fall to a he said vs. he said situation. If the publicity causes more people to emerge and level claims against Fine, though, Boeheim’s statements may not look so prudent.

Nobody trusts or likes Boeheim in the first place, do they? Awful things are expected to come from Syracuse.

You shut your mouth, stark!
November 18th, 2011 at 7:21 AM
Boeheim wasn’t with him every minute of his life.
let’s not make assumptions, OK?

Is Bernie Fine married/divorced? There’s no mention of it in Wikipedia. If not, it would be circumstantial evidence, but enough to convince me there’s some truth in these claims.

Has there already been a post on here about Tokyo Sexwale? There doesn’t really even need to be any connection to current events. Just write about Tokyo Sexwale
November 18th, 2011 at 8:00 AM
this isn’t a very appropriate time or place to talk about asses.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:01 AM
Its much easier to bottle it up and pretend it never happened than to face it AND face your abuser AND face the whole world knowing what happened to you.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:03 AM
Agree. Boeheim’s statements strike me as reckless.
But on the other hand you can’t just dismiss that the City Police, the University, the Post-Standard, and ESPN all conducted their own investigations into this years ago.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:09 AM
I always cringe when I hear people assert things absolutely, since there are so few absolutes in life. What if Boeheim is wrong?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:10 AM
Very true. Seems all proper protocol was followed, they just didnt have more than one accuser or eyewitness. Dont think Boeheim will take any hit or be blamed for this.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:16 AM
Then he’s wrong. I hate sounding insensitive about things like this. I understand that these allegations may be true. But, if there was something said about someone I’ve known, trusted, and loved for pretty much a lifetime and the accusation came out of nowhere or it was supposedly the first time I’m hearing about this, the first duty I have to that person is to defend them to the death. Deal with being wrong later. People will forgive you for being loyal when you truly had no idea. Forgiveness is a lot harder to get back if you didn’t unequivocally have your friend’s/family’s back.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:17 AM
Yep. That’s his personality, though, for better or worse. But I was still amazed at what he said, in that it was so direct in attacking Davis.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:22 AM
Spot on, Jersey. Admittedly, I’ve become jaded over the years. If I’m Fine, you bet I would want a high profile guy like Boeheim lending active support.
Lisk does make a good point in the fact that Boeheim wasn’t with Fine every minute of Fine’s life.
I do wonder as to the timing, though. Why do the accusers come forward at this specific time? Is it because it took this long to muster the proper courage? Is there something more nefarious afoot?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:23 AM
The one guy apparantly started talking to ESPN in 03. But with no other accuser/witness, they didnt report it. Apparantly after the Penn State thing came out, someone else decided to come forward.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:24 AM
His stepbrother. As Jim Boeheim is very quick to point out.
/put down the phone, Jim. Put it on silent.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:26 AM
ESPN has dropped the moral obligation ball. They must be punished.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:27 AM
@Jersey – I see where you’re coming from. If it’s family (and that can include people who aren’t blood) then yeah, I understand.
This is a bit different, though, right? I wonder if Boeheim would be reacting the same way if the accusations were just coming to light. I hope he is feeling so emboldened because he knows much about the previous investigations, rather than simply out of loyalty.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
I don’t want to sound insensitive either, but I saw that stepbrother on sportsceenter, and something about his story didnt add up. And he was gross looking. Borderline unmolestable.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:30 AM
Borderline unmolestable.
You never know, though. Could’ve been a slumpbuster
November 18th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
The Pride of Lyons is a no-bs straight shooter, and I don’t think he minds taking the PR hit. Just hope he’s right for the sake of everyone involved.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
That comment reminds me of some people avoid gay spots because some fag might hit on them. Have you looked in the mirror lately, dude?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
I’m admittedly hideous to look at. I don’t pretend otherwise.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
I heard on the radio that there have been multiple investigations in this previously by ESPN, the police, and Syracuse, and none of them could corroborate the victims stories.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
none of them could corroborate the victims stories
Draw your own conclusions
November 18th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
All I have to say is this.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:39 AM
ESPN, The Syracuse Post-Standard, the University, and the City Police – each did their own. Though I need to read again whether the City Police actually did as much as the others, who all interviewed multiple people who the accuser said would corroborate his story or had been abused themselves.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
Either way, the City Police have opened a new investigation which, given the national and local media scrutiny, should be rather thorough.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:40 AM
I’m not used to being up and commenting before the first post. Is it always this lively pre-Roundup?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
This morning. I got a nice beard going, so there’s that.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:42 AM
Only when you combine the salaciousness of a child molestation accusation with an evening where Tim Tebow ate TBL’s soul.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
I’m anxiously awaiting TBLs bashing of a Akers defense that forced 8 three and outs, and got punts on three possessions that started inside jets territory.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
This iPad sucks. Sub in a jets for akers

Francesa should be VERY entertaining today with his Jets BBQ and talking about his pal Boeheim.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
Yeah, teach your stupid iPad that the kicker is usually considered a member of the offense while the punter is considered a defensive position.

Hey, me too! It’s the winter thing, isn’t it?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
According to the OTL guy, the police told the accuser that basically the statute of limitations was up on what happened to him and only had a short phone conversation with him. Didnt sound like they did much of an investigation.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
Can’t wait until after the holidays to grow my beard.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
yeah, but watching homophobe guys get overly-uncomfortable around anyone who they even perceive as being gay is hilarious in its own right. add in them thinking they might get hit on and it’s unintentional comedy at it’s finest.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
Speaking of unmolestable, thanks for convincing me not to pick Denver, Clay. Turns out that after you convinced me that Ryan’s D could stop Tebow, I should have asked how the Jets offense was going to do. I forgot that Sanchez can’t win an important game without a great running game, a defense outscoring the other team’s offense, a couple of gift pass interference calls, and someone besides him playing QB.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:48 AM
I guess you type often about your love for David Akers?
November 18th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
Many first impressions seem to be dismissive of the Fine/Boeheim accusations… much like Paterno’s reaction? We owe it to the children to not overreact, but to do due diligence on every wolf cry.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
No shave November bro, you’re a couple weeks late on starting that Novembeard.
November 18th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
Yeah. I do get the impression there is more to it than that. But I’m glad that after that, even though the University knew the police treated him like that, they still took him seriously and investigated his claims. Penn State this is not.
November 18th, 2011 at 11:20 AM

Exactly. Sadly we live in a cynical world these days where people immediately think of reasons for the accusations, such as lawsuits and money. Add in that honesty is an endangered species – Sandusky claiming his innocence – and the pedestal we put this shitbags on. I just hope these molestation accounts don’t go epidemic, but I suppose I won’t be surprised to hear more surface.
