Did Mike McQueary Play in a 2nd Mile Golf Fundraiser Organized by Jerry Sandusky Just One Year After Witnessing the Alleged Shower Rape?
Mike McQueary is shaping up as a key figure in the Penn State scandal because he allegedly witnessed Jerry Sandusky raping a young boy in the shower in 2002. Whether or not McQueary took action to physically break up the disgusting act remains unclear – all signs point to no – but he did pass along the disturbing news to coach Joe Paterno. The New York Times has a powerful story with some great reporting about how the Sandusky investigation unfolded, and McQueary comes off as a sympathetic figure (the prosecution is going to need him):
So investigators set up a meeting in an out-of-the-way parking lot, according to those with knowledge of the case.
There, one day a little over a year ago, McQueary unburdened himself, the two people said. He needed little prompting.
But Mike, how could you in good conscience witness something like that and then go play in a 2nd Mile golf fundraiser – organized by Sandusky – one year later? Very curious to see how McQueary defends himself on this one.

It might dent his credibility as a witness, but it’s certainly possible that he was just trying to keep up appearances while matters were sorted out by the administration (even if they were in fact not being sorted out). But I don’t think this is the damning condemnation of McQueary that you think it is. If there is a picture of him from that tournament having a great time with his arm around Sandusky, then yeah, he’s pretty fucked. But if he went to the tournament, never saw or interacted with Sandusky, then this seems a rather neutral event.
I think it’s far more damning that he claimed he emailed a report to the campus police in 2002 and campus police says they have no record of talking to him. Seems like that might be the better aspect to continue to focus on.

Are we ignoring the part of the NYT article where investigators admit that Ray Gricar didn’t have enough evidence to take Sandusky to trial?
November 17th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
“Officials at the Second Mile, the charity for at-risk children that Sandusky founded and that prosecutors say he used to target victims, reported that several years of the organization’s records were missing and had perhaps been stolen. The missing files, investigators worry, may limit their ability to determine if Sandusky used charity resources — expense accounts, travel, gifts — to recruit new victims, or even buy their silence, according to two people with knowledge of the case.”
Wow.

Has this article been discussed? An FBI psychological profiler and expert in child crimes says that 9 times out of 10, people would run from that horrific scene.
November 17th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
We get it. He should have reported the horrible offense that he allegedly witnessed to any and all authorities, both those at PSU and outside, i.e., the police, sheriff, and anyone else who would listen. Thereafter, if nothing was done he should have made a bigger issue of it by re-reporting or reporting to someone else. Also, the fact that he continued to interact and be around this alleged monster of a man is troubling. However, do we really need a new post about every intereaction they had after the alleged rape witnessing. I don’t think we do.
November 17th, 2011 at 10:57 AM

I’m pretty sure that I’d be one of those 9. The shock and disbelief that must go through one’s mind when seeing a highly respected individual committing so disgusting and reprehensible an act, I can only imagine. I would think that the first reaction would be to try to convince yourself that you did not see what you just saw.

November 17th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
It’s not a morality thing, it’s a common psychological response
November 17th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
A quick comment – while I agree that in the shocking instant of witnessing a horrific crime, most folk would be taken aback. Something like child rape is so rare, that it would knock any of us off balance.
But, if we always stay shocked and lose sight of the harm being done, then go home thinking “I shoulda done something”, to me that guilt would be unbearable. I would rather now step in, even if it isn’t my business, than walk away and hope someone else steps in to help the innocent victim. And, in my past, I have stepped in to other circumstances (and almost got my butt stomped once or twice), but it was still the right thing to do.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Boom!
November 17th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
But it is one thing to flee the scene and another to not call the police once you’ve got your shit together again
November 17th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
In that moment, I agree. But there is an 8-12 hour time period between the time he witnessed what he saw, and he went to Paterno’s house.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
sportsgal, I have dated liberals before. My folks marched in the civil rights movement in the 60′s – I grew up liberal.
Richt’s – nobody actually dies. The story is about relationships (partially driven by my failed second marriage), but it is thematically opposed to the Tyler Perry/RomCom stuff that is so prevalent today. I want to look at realistic characters, and not the stuff that misleads people today.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Grand Jury reports are only summaries of what was testified to, usually only bringing out the details that can uphold an indictment.
Grand Jury testimony itself is sealed. No one will ever know what McQueary testified to outside of what they included in the report. The fact that he could have said I went to the police, etc would usually get excluded from that report because it isn’t necessary to uphold conviction.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
In that moment, I agree. But there is an 8-12 hour time period between the time he witnessed what he saw, and he went to Paterno’s house.
Great point. I don’t want to be an apologist for anyone, but I know what I’d like to think I would have done in those 8-12 hours, but I have not, and hope to God I never am, been in that position. So I’m not sure where my head would be.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
I will continue to rip Mcqueary because after witnessing this, NOTHING happened. I don’t care if he ran away, it’s what he did afterward that I care about. If he REALLY did enough as he claims, we would have heard about this.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
or a business decision.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:17 AM

I never expected to last this long. I initially wanted to do a 4-year hitch as an accounting and finance officer, get out with a master’s and CPA cert, then move back to Memphis. This isn’t the life I would have picked 30 years ago, but I am blessed and thankful.

As I said, it sounds as though you have earned a nice life of retirement. I thought about service after high school and then again after college, but couldn’t make the commitment that it would entail. So I always have respect for those who spent the majority of their lives to this point serving the nation, especially when doing so has become such an unfashionable thing to do for so much of society.
I do have friends and step-brothers who served and my brother’s best friend is an academy graduate who currently is an O-3 flying F-16s out of Luke AFB. I cannot fathom what it takes to climb into the cockpit such as he does with a wife and child and know that each time there’s a possibility he may not return.
In short, your presence, at least from my point of view, is very welcome here.

Ms621, when I have been in military-friendly towns like San Antonio and the Springs, even though a lot of folk haven’t actually served, their active support is needed and appreciated. At my church, we have a military ministry that reaches out to deployed members. Most of our group haven’t served personally, but they “get it” – they understand what it means. I don’t get to this point without support from people like you.
Also, your brother’s friend flying Vipers is truly at the tip of the spear. The men and women flying fast movers are rock stars, and across the rest of the USAF there is a bit of envy.

Miz, heck yeah. I could go for some dry rub ribs now, for sure.

my wife and I were talking about Rendezvous just last weekend. that picture was taken October 2010. I had a work trip to Memphis and got to catch the Tigers season opening hoops game and eat Rendezvous all in the same night. nomnomnomnom.

I also just looked and it said the Public Eye closed down in 2000. I’m with you though on listening to the locals. there is a place in Little Rock called Sims that is awesome and I don’t think many people know about.

there’s a place I ate at a few times in grad school that’s between the U of Memphis and the Liberty Bowl stadium on the same road (Central Ave maybe?). it’s kindof a hole-in-the-wall place, but phenomenal. you walk out smelling like you were on the pit.

Dang, Miz. That pic looks great. One bad thing about COLO, not a lot of locals here know about BBQ. Gotta find a transplant from the south to get great ribs.

I grew up in Wisconsin and sometimes when I go home my mom tells me there is BBQ in the fridge. I open it up and see sloppy joes. I weep for her every time it happens. I think my blank expression usually tells her what she needs to know.
