Franco Harris Found Out the Hard Way That Defending Joe Paterno is Not a Smart Move
Let this be a lesson to anyone who feels compelled to defend Joe Paterno in a public forum: You might lose your job.
Here’s what legendary Pittsburgh Steelers’ RB Franco Harris – a Penn State grad – said about Joe Paterno last week:
I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go. I’m very disappointed in their decision. I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time. They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.’
Here’s what The Meadows Race Track and Casino said in a statement about Harris, who was a spokesman for the company:
In light of the recent developments with Franco Harris regarding Joe Paterno’s dismissal, Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time, while these matters are looked into further
Maybe “on hold” just means Harris won’t be in any commercials for 6-12 months until the dust from this scandal clears. But I have to wonder … how many people aren’t going to go to a Race Track/Casino because of something Franco Harris said, even if it was hopelessly uninformed? [Post Gazette]

I would guess this is the tip of the iceberg. Franco was renting the horses from the track to JoePa for the old man’s deviant sexual satisfaction. Very young horses, mind you.
November 16th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I’ll be sure to consider this if someone is using my likeness to schlep a product. Franco Harris got removed from a promotion for having an unpopular opinion. Your lede looks and smells like a tabloid.
What else you got?
November 16th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
The question is why would people go to Meadows Race Track, which is in the middle of no where, while there’s a nice brand new casino downtown?
/I need to stop going there drunk at 230 am

Somehow, some way, I hope Paterno is exonerated.

See, it would have been better if Franco had vigorously defended him only to capitulate right before the hammer came down, so we could make a humorous reference like “look who’s running out of bounds again!”

Yes. I forgot about the Duke case. I wonder if the process of exoneration for those Duke kids was simply under reported or was it nonexistent? I don’t remember much other than the Internet throwing stones.

I’ve never been there, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that it’s smoke filled, has silver hairs pushing walkers everywhere, and their lounge features some random 80′s cover band on the weekends.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
TBL – do you not? Understand my point – apathy or indecision or whatever psychological crisis you want to attribute to JoePa, et al are no excuse in my book. It’s a sad state of affairs that, if proven to be absolutely true, should be considered evil (I’m talking about Joe Pa still…not Sandusky whose acts are evil on their face). So why is it bad to hold out hope that there is some reasonable aspect of Joe Pa’s case that has been left out of the public record thus far that would reinstate Joe Pa’s standing in the national community? I’m hoping for good here. Somehow someway.

I like to consider it constructive feedback. Just because you write Google-rific stuff and it gets eyeballs doesn’t make it interesting. Just makes it profitable.
I am hoping Tim Ryan does have a baseball post loaded up. Would like to talk about that realignment stuff and the new CBA. I don’t really like the two 15 team league idea. Or the extra wildcard. It appears to be inevitable right now though.

November 16th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Also, I’m in line with the NYT times article that is critical of everyone’s rush to judgment. The mind is a mysterious thing. We think we know how we would like to act in certain situations but fortunately 99.9% of us will never be faced with a comparable test to see how we fare. I don’t think this nullifies punishment or scorn we place on Paterno, but I don’t think Paterno is bad in his core. He failed because he is human. Not because he is inherently evil and therefore a part of me feels sorry for him. And therefore a part of me gets defensive when we rush to judgment about what could be completely unrelated events – his house, etc.

all of the anger about Paterno is from assumptions based on a scant amount of information in the form of a grand jury testimony that was investigating another matter not directly related to the timeline of what and when Paterno knew what was going on.
i don’t excuse Paterno for his lack of inaction outside of the bare minimum required by reporting it to his own superiors, and i’m certainly not apologizing for him.
there’s just not enough information out there to definitively say what exactly Paterno knew.
even the ginger coach’s statements in the grand jury testimony don’t match up with what he’s saying now, so there’s a lot more info out there.

Don’t kid yourself – Franco will find a new endeavor around town to whore his name for. When the downtown casino licenses were being competed for, he backed one of the plans that wasn’t chosen. Now, he was marketing for the next closest casino to the downtown one.
If there’s any type of event/commercial/etc. that needs an old Steeler, you bet your ass Franco and Rocky Bleier are racing to see who gets there first.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:16 AM

November 16th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
No. I agree. They are not the same. I was inserting my feint hope that Joe Pa is not the man he appears to be and he would be exonerated and there would be a time when those who hastily judged would have to eat crow. I realize there is slight chance of this, given what is of public record. I’m not an idiot.

I would go to Soldier for the tailgate. Not sure about attending the actual game though. Stadium only seats 56K. Those tickets will be pricey. I also can’t bring myself to cheer for the Irish unless they’re playing one of the Michigan schools and I have money on it.

i don’t excuse Paterno for his lack of inaction outside of the bare minimum required by reporting it to his own superiors, and i’m certainly not apologizing for him.
there’s just not enough information out there to definitively say what exactly Paterno knew.
There’s 3 potential outcomes:
1. Paterno knew as much as has been revealed, i.e. he was told by McQueary what he saw/did and he passed it along and that’s it. It’s tough to accept him not doing more than the minimum, but it doesn’t stain him further.
2. Paterno knew more than has been revealed, i.e. he was aware to some extent of the rumors and allegations against Sandusky at Penn State but he did nothing more than he did. This is troubling because it paints Paterno as do-nothing against a child predator who used his facilities/program as bait.
3. Paterno knew and was actively covering it up. This is where some are going to prematurely but, if true, would destroy his reputation. If he knew of Sandusky’s crimes/allegations against him and was active in ensuring things never came to light, I don’t know how anyone can defend him.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
It’s amazing the groupthink that takes place in situations like this. Stray from perception and it’s as if you support child rape. Therefore, remove all images of Paterno, do not defend, do not wear that PSU sweatshirt or else you spit in the eye of all rape victims. Lost is the belief in reasonable alternatives to the narrative, and simple wishes or hopes that people are not as bad as they appear to be. And not simply for the sake of a college football coaching legend whose reputation borders on mythic, but because if a college football coach whose reputation borders on mythic fails, what of a regular old person…like me. Or you. Or TBL. We are all sinners and failures. We all suffer from the same shortcomings of thought and mind. Save the exclamation marks. Excuse me for wishing it otherwise.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:27 AM

Apropos of nothing, Franco’s son is a dumbass. I know he went to Princeton (I think), but he ran for mayor in Pittsburgh. He was a dumbass. One part of Bush (Ivy League scion with no relationship to reality), one part Obama (darling of local hipsters with no relationship to reality).

VezBeast, this. I’ve been curious about this aspect of the meetup thing for a while. What if everyone gets to the tailgate/bar/whatever and realizes, what the fuck, all of you people are ridiculous assholes?
To be fair, we kinda are
we’d all stand around talking about TBL and the commenting section, like married people talk about their kids when they’re finally alone. then we’d re-enact epic posts and comments!
/i know that’s not how it goes
November 16th, 2011 at 11:54 AM
From other meet-ups I think we will be fine. Tailgating is hardly ever a bad experience. Alcohol will loosen everyone up.

WHAT?! Hahahahahahahahaha! I love it.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m super fun. Plus I’m the only person capable of bringing additional vagina to this tailgate so that automatically makes me good people.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:55 AM
that’s a fun little bout of anxiety tho…goes away pretty quick tho.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
Apparently he did not, and was not happy about it. We have yet to hear WHY he failed…
November 16th, 2011 at 11:56 AM
That sounds pretty truthy.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
If I show up. who’s to say we won’t have lobster?
November 16th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Spencer’s first words when he got in my truck last year at the airport were, “I’m not as big of an asshole in person as I am on the internet.” Things went just fine from there.
If you guys come to Chicago, you can get another sammich from Perry’s again.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
I’d probably have to at least be facebook friends with a few TBL’ers before I made the plunge on a trip. That way I could investigate/prepare/change my mind all together in fear I’m gonna get stabbed.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
lol.
November 16th, 2011 at 11:57 AM
That’s a top 10 comment all-time.

I have nothing to add that I didn’t say the other day. I just don’t want this to get lost in the CHI planning.

Thank you good sir. We can plan some golf too if people want to play that weekend. Try to do the Phils/Red Sox game on Saturday and golf on Friday if people arrive then…
November 16th, 2011 at 12:03 PM
I would go to a Chicago trip, but I feel like I won’t be one of the cool kids because of my NFL allegiance

Now you’re talking. But if it happens, I’m still telling my wife y’all are some of my old Auburn friends she hasn’t met.

You alright Ritty, you alright, very well said.
For the record I always thought Cam was innocent.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Thanks. Glad I’m still referred to as Ritty around here for the 2 weeks I must suffer the commenter name change bet I lost to HuskerDawg.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
It’s also Preakness Day…and given that there is a OTB a stone’s throw from CBP, bets could be made if need be.

I like where your head’s at.
November 16th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
I hear you. I’m a disembodied, pipe-smoking head prominently associated with a mock religion for the truly weird.

One part of Bush (Ivy League scion with no relationship to reality), one part Obama (darling of local hipsters with no relationship to reality).
And we wonder why our country is so fucked up. Look at the leaders we choose.
