Let this be a lesson to anyone who feels compelled to defend Joe Paterno in a public forum: You might lose your job.

Here’s what legendary Pittsburgh Steelers’ RB Franco Harris – a Penn State grad – said about Joe Paterno last week:

I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go. I’m very disappointed in their decision. I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time. They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.’

Here’s what The Meadows Race Track and Casino said in a statement about Harris, who was a spokesman for the company:

In light of the recent developments with Franco Harris regarding Joe Paterno’s dismissal, Franco and The Meadows have mutually decided to put their business relationship on hold at this time, while these matters are looked into further

Maybe “on hold” just means Harris won’t be in any commercials for 6-12 months until the dust from this scandal clears. But I have to wonder … how many people aren’t going to go to a Race Track/Casino because of something Franco Harris said, even if it was hopelessly uninformed? [Post Gazette]
