UFC on Fox Drew 5.7 Million Viewers, Which Compares Favorably to an ALCS Game and Regular Season College Football
UFC’s first offering on FOX was a quick one: A 64-second knockout Saturday night (Stephen will have a full breakdown later). It happened in the midst of the Oregon-Stanford game, which was on ABC and had National Championship implications. I didn’t expect MMA to generate a big rating.
It drew a staggering 5.7 million viewers and a 3.1 rating.
That’s about how many people watched game five of the ALCS between the Rangers and Tigers. While that’s surprising, this is even moreso: “Among men 18-34, UFC on Fox out-rated every college football game this season other than LSU-Alabama.” FOX is probably thrilled. Here’s a further breakdown of the numbers. [Broadcasting & Cable]

Less viewers than the Kimbo Slice fight on CBS. Are the glory days of MMA in the past?

that’s just because the people who watch CBS regularly enjoy seeing black people in cages.

Come on now, that’s not fair, Kimbo moves the needle.
I am happy for Dos Santos. He is very easy to root for. I really enjoyed him on TUF.

This fight was easy money. For some reason I was able to get +odds on both fighters to win inside distance. I loaded up my entire account with bets on both fighters (skewed toward Dos Santos who I got at a staggering +280, Velazquez was +110) as well as the prop bet that it went less than 3 rounds (at -200).
Cashed out nicely.

True. only way UFC was gonna top that is if Brock was the free fight. and there is no way Dana is gonna giving away Brock for free when he can get a million PPV buys.

No, you didn’t.

well that’s depressing.

clown – is the pac hype train derailed? does anyone really think pac would beat money?

well that’s depressing.
What did you think Penn State students were going to tune into after an afternoon of yelling “JoePa forevah! Fuck the haters!” into a camera for all to see?

Not Clown, but why are people saying this? Marquez is Pac’s biggest rival. Knows him the best, and went the difference the last two fights. Why is everyone surprised that he did so well against Pacquiao?

golf.

I really wish they would have showed the Henderson/Guida fight. Logged in online to watch – it was awesome – knockdowns, slams, submission attempts, slick transitions, etc. For everyone that complained the title fight was too short it would have been a nice counterpoint.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Yes. Pac fans. Just a major dropoff from Manny compared his last few fights.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:13 PM
went the difference huh

i’m not surprised. their previous fights were also close. just think that the pac hype machine is bullshit and b/c money may, like marquez, strives at countering, he’d destroy pac.

great fight. too bad no one saw it.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:15 PM
Because one is supposedly the best pound for pound fighter in the world, and the other is a slow 38 year old. I didn’t hear from the Pacquiao crowd much today. They even slinked out of the local BWW after the fight.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
Marquez is much more aggresive than Money, though (unless he sees that the fighter and ref aren’t paying attention). I’d say Pac would be 6:1 and I would bet on him.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:20 PM
Don’t mistake activity for results. Mayweather dominated Marquez.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
I saw you say this the other day. When was Marquez ever fast? That’s not his game. Never been his game. Marquez fought as well as he could. The fact is, if he was as cautious of Pac’s power in the 1st two fights as he was in this fight, he wins those. Can we please give some credit to Marquez who is one of the better fighters around. He’d still whoop a bunch of younger, “faster”, lightweights. This isn’t an indictment on Pac’s talent at all.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:21 PM
To be fair Marquez was on that peepee diet at the time, which he smartly discarded before the Pacquiao fight.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
Mayweather was a bad, bad match up for Marquez. He had no business being in the ring with him with his style. Plus, again, Marquez threw far less punches then Pacquiao. For the third fight in a row.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:26 PM
I couldn’t be happier about the results. Pac won but didn’t look good. If this doesn’t give Pretty Boy confidence that he can beat Pac nothing will and Floyd takes calculated risks when picking his opponents.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:28 PM
He was never quick (it’s not about fast), but he wasn’t as slow as he was Saturday night. He was countering Pac Man with rights all night, then sliding. He gave away that fight in the 11th and 12th rounds. His corner should have never told him he was winning.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:31 PM
Any chance Mayweather stops ducking Pac? Or is he going to continue to wait for him as Pacman gets further away from his prime?
November 14th, 2011 at 1:33 PM
I say he was being more conscious of an obviously more in shape fighter that he knows can knock him down. He was very selective in the spots where he engaged Pacquiao. I don’t know why you and others feel that it says something about Pac that the guy who knows him best inside the ring would look to be on level ground with him in their 3rd fight.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
They’ll fight next year. I truly believe that with all my heart.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:34 PM
he’s older than Pac
November 14th, 2011 at 1:39 PM
If he doesn’t make the fight now he never will. Pac has looked like an animal over the last few years. Saturday night he looked like he took a step back. A lot of that has to do with Marquez knowing him so well as Jersey discussed but he looked beatable. If Pretty Boy (I refuse to call him Money, athletes can’t give themselves nicknames) doesn’t make the fight now he has no intention of ever doing it.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:44 PM
He was getting caught with rights the whole night, not because the guy knows him so well. He was getting caught because he was diving in, off balanced, and is a mediocre defensive fighter. He was also losing steam from the body shots he was taking. This, once again, was coming from a slow, 38 year old boxer who went down in weight class after Mayweather beat him because he said he felt too slow at that class.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:47 PM
And talking about his hype machine; if Lampley and crew were doing the fight on radio, you would have thought Marquez hadn’t landed a punch for the first five rounds. Then you had round 8 (I think)when Lampley was practically orgasming over Manny’s footwork, instead of the fact that he was getting caught by about 3 or 4 Marquez upper cuts. Kellerman finally had to bring the dude to reality.
November 14th, 2011 at 1:54 PM
Yeah, he felt slow after his one fight at that class with one of the quickest guys on the planet. C’mon. And It’s exactly what I mean. Marquez knows that he can’t go after Pacquiao. He had to bait him into coming in. The first 2 rounds felt so slow, but it was only because Marquez was establishing that tonight, he wouldn’t be the aggressor. That looked very obvious. Aside from that, this fight looked JUST like the first two fights. Even Mayweather said as much.
