Matt Kemp Close to Signing 8-Year, $160 Million Contract
According to everyone who has ever discussed the game of baseball in a public forum, the Los Angeles Dodgers are “on the verge” of signing Matt Kemp to an eight-year deal worth $160 million. Sure, that’s a truckload of money for Rihanna’s former bone buddy, but at 27 years of age the contract will be up when Kemp turns 35, otherwise known as the age where baseball players suddenly turn into Montgomery Burns; or A-Rod.
Assuming the monster deal ends up somewhere in the neighborhood of the widely reported mountain of dollars, it would eclipse the incredibly regretful $105 million deal the Dodgers awarded Kevin Brown back in 1999. Sounds like we’ll find out for sure later this afternoon at some ceremony taking place in, you guessed it, Compton.
While locking up a young star player before selling the team is a sound business decision, I’m assuming this was Frank McCourt’s olive branch to Dodger fans in the hopes he can safely leave town without a gang of rioters following closely behind.

This is going to prejudice any potential owner looking at the club, isn’t it? McCourt, on his way out the door, OK’s an expenditure that he might only have to meet 1/8th of?

This honestly seems like a pretty solid deal to me, I imagine the MLB people in charge would approve this since it would hurt the value of the club to let him walk.

shout out to Crouton who mentioned this earlier.

What’s Kershaw’s contract status? It would be wise to lock up him as well. That’s a good core to build around.

Hmm, good point. I didn’t think about that.

The Cubs had no problem selling even with all the shitty contracts they have. The Dodgers before this had no big longer term contracts, plus in McCourt’s eyes, he will only be around to pay the Kemp arb year. I would guess the first year of the contract, he makes in the neighborhood of $15MM

According to Cot’s, he’s entering his first arbitration eligible year in 2012.

MS, that’s what I meant by this: “While locking up a young star player before selling the team is a sound business decision,”

He is entering the first year of arbitration and becomes a free agent after the 2014 season. I would imagine he gets locked up after next season…probably the best from a front office stand point to not lock him up after a Cy Young calibre season…unless he has another one next year.

I swear I read the post. I must have skipped over that sentence.
I offer this as an apology.

Should they try trade Ethier now?
November 14th, 2011 at 2:52 PM
Yeah, it’d clearly be in their best interest to do this and lock of Kershaw, but that’s Captain Obvious stuff there. I’d kill Angelos to have either or both an O…more Kershaw than Kemp.
Actually, I’d kill Angelos for almost nothing.

He’ll definitely get a nice raise this year. I don’t know that they’ll try to lock him up. I would presume, with Kershaw still under control for three more seasons, they’ll leave that up to the next ownership group.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Kershaw isn’t a free agent until 2015, right? Plenty of time to figure it out with him.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
It’s Monday, completely forgot about that rule.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:55 PM
They should have traded him last year. As a big Dodger fan, I have hated him for a while. He is awful defensively and can’t hit left handed pitching, which makes him a really really good platoon player. That said, they would do best not dealing him, hope his knee recovers well and either trade him at the deadline or let it ride if they are still in it.

I just saw that Carlos Lee is going into the final year of his deal. That made my day.
/we still owe Brett Myers $12 million next year

And here come the pretzels!
November 14th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
It’s not a priority. Plus, it would be hard for him to eclipse this year’s performance…so if he slips a little next year, it would be a good time to extend him then.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:57 PM
Good for the Dodgers and their fans. This guy needed to be retained. Dodgers should run this this division with the right owner.
November 14th, 2011 at 2:58 PM
I just looked at the Dodgers roster. It’s not impressive.

I pretty much agree with this.

mat kemp should celebrate with trip to venezuala.

At least your team didn’t just sign Jamey Carroll to a two year contract to be your every day SS.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
if you read this in Bammer, it makes total sense.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:00 PM
All of you can stop your bitching, I have Peter Angelos.

We had the second best record in the NL in the second half. If Ethier returns heathy, Gordon can learn to get on base, Sands can continue to rake like he did for the last 6 weeks and Jansen can be the elite closer he was, we will be just fine. Kenley Jansen’s FIP for the month of September was negative. That is insane.

We also owe $5.5 million to Brandon Lyon, $13.5 million to Wandy Rodriguez, and $250,000 to Bill Hall. The same Bill Hall that was released halfway through the season.

I can play the “If” game with the Indians as well. It never comes to fruition though.

At least the Dodgers didn’t just drop $50,000,058 on a major douchebag.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:04 PM
That’s true.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:05 PM
We are paying Andruw Jones in 2012 a lot more than that to be released in 2008.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:06 PM
Every team has shitty contracts. It’s having the cash to bail those out that separates contenders from the Royals.

venezuala is venezuela’s bitch.

Ouch. You win.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:08 PM
The Cubs have the cash to bail themselves out and they are worse than the Royals, though.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:10 PM
Cubs now only have three years left on Soriano’s contract.
/looking for Hendry
November 14th, 2011 at 3:12 PM
Cubs payroll has decreased every year since 2008, I think. It didn’t help that all our scouting reports and transaction requests were covered in duck fat and powdered sugar. The donut eating dunce is gone, thankfully.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:15 PM
And the bright side for you guys is that you didn’t hire Ned Colletti either.
November 14th, 2011 at 3:22 PM
Kemp and Stewart have been asking for a new contract for years. If Frank had any brains he could’ve gotten him for less money after the egg he layed when he was fucking Rihanna.

Looking up at Arizona the next 4 years. Enjoy.
