Sizeable story we missed due to the Joe Paterno ouster: some pretty big corruption in the UFC athletic department.
UFC or UCF?
November 11th, 2011 at 8:32 AM
You double posted that story.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
kind of answer your own question there don’t you?
November 11th, 2011 at 8:35 AM
ugh. clearly, a long morning. sick as a dog.
thanks, will fix.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:36 AM
TBL – are you hung-over? Hate to hop on the bandwagon here, but hiring a freelance copy editor might be a wise strategy.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
The Chargers opened the season 4-1, but have now lost four in a row.
Made my comments last night (see Lisk’s pregame post).
Good news: the 3 games in 11 days crunch is done.
Bad news: they lost all three. This team is getting worse. I still think Rivers is injured, but trying to play through it. That doesn’t explain poor defense, though.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:37 AM
GW – No, just sick. Little guy got sick this week and I’ve got it now. Stuffy nose, coughing, and the throat swelling up, which i hate the most. sleep was brutal. going to the store to get some drugs to combat this.
i normally like to try and tough it out … no shot today.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:38 AM
not even when it was posted in the roundup yesterday?
November 11th, 2011 at 8:39 AM
c’mon now, the big news is that Tiger is in the lead at the Australian Open (after two rounds)

I just assumed you had a case of NyQuil at the house.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
BTW – saw a few articles last night speculating that McQuery hasn’t been fired since PA actually has a “Whistleblower Law” that prevent employers from firing or otherwise discriminating against employees who make a good faith report of wrongdoing.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:41 AM
TBL – get well soon.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:44 AM
thanks, man

No, just sick. Little guy got sick this week and I’ve got it now. Stuffy nose, coughing, and the throat swelling up, which i hate the most. sleep was brutal. going to the store to get some drugs to combat this.
take this and call me in the morning.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:47 AM
How in the hell is McQueary not being prosecuted for failure to report a crime? The state’s protection of this assclown is becoming sickening.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:49 AM
let me as a general question… if you tear your calf, can you walk on it?
November 11th, 2011 at 8:51 AM
Also to all, happy Veteran’s Day. Hat’s off to all who have served to defend our nation.
Not meant to stir political discussion on how troops were used. Just honoring the troops themselves.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:51 AM
Oddly, the brunt of the coverage of the whole Penn St. thing was on Paterno. Sandusky is such an enigma. He’s done irreparable harm to numerous kids and yet his foundation has done so much good. He’s adopted six kids. He’s married and yet rapes young boys. I can’t figure the guy out. Is his foundation a byproduct of his sickness, or is he truly a do-gooder with a twisted sickness?
November 11th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
Because he met the PA legal requirements by reporting it to his superiors, including the highest ranking person in the Campus Police dept.

Happy Veterans Day to all of the Vets out there.
A question wrapped around an enigma. Otherwise, I thik it’s a little of both parts.
November 11th, 2011 at 8:56 AM
that’s BS, if you use that logic Paterno also reported it up the chain and still got canned.
/anxiously waiting for a half baked article about the PSU scandal

Paterno wasn’t the witness – he wouldn’t be protected by that law.

November 11th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
That’s horseshit. He witnessed a crime in progress, did nothing to stop it from continuing, called his fucking father instead of the police, and then the next day met with Paterno. Strike three. Dude needs to be hung up by his fucking toenails and left alone with Sandusky.

November 11th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
TBL – it might be too late but Zicam is the answer if you can get out in front of the sick. I have two rug rats and keep that stuff in the medicine cabinet for the slightest hint of cold.
Its $$$ but worth it.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
Yeah – I just read about Sandusky’s adoptions yesterday. I got to thinking about just how creepy that is. That really makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
doesn’t matter, it applies to anyone who makes a good faith report on wrongdoing.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
I don’t believe there actually is a Good Samaritan Law. This isn’t Seinfeld.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:03 AM
Marshall actually hired Sandusky – for a day. He abandoned, thank god, for the charity loyalty reasons.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
Agreed.
Quick aside: Veterans day would explain why traffic was so light today on the way to work. The commute was almost delightful.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
Finally this shit is getting it’s day in the media spotlight. I wish Paterno would have quit immediately so people could focused their attention on these scum bags.

herd – have tried zicam in the past. not a huge fan
November 11th, 2011 at 9:07 AM
The FDA warns everyone not to use that stuff.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
That aircraft carrier game is really cool. Hadn’t heard about that.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
TBL, if you don’t use Zicam, I’ve found when I get cold symptoms like yours, double shots of NyQuil help me.
Also, I down large quantities of orange juice and Sprite/7-Up (mixed 50/50). Usually clears me of cold symptoms within 24 hrs.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
Funny. It wasn’t like it was a violent crime where McQueery had to fear for his safety or anything. It was a fucking old guy banging a ten year old in the shower.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
Zicam doesn’t work….at least for no one I’ve ever heard use it.
If it works for you, mozel tov. But I think it’s a useless product.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
is Zicam kind of like that airborne stuff?
November 11th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
No matter how many times I read about this, I can’t avoid feeling sick.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
yeah, it’s not like you walked in on two adults banging and it appeard to be consensual. there’s nothing about this situation that could have been perceived as “legal” or Consensual
November 11th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
Wow. I can’t say I’ve ever asked anyone if it worked for them or not. But I’m a b*tch when I get sick so I try combat the thing as soon as I get any inkling its coming. I used the little nasal swab things and it seemed to work.

dayquil every 4 hours, powerade zero in large quantities and Afrin no drip nasal spray in the pump bottle.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
I think she makes some good points.
From the tone of your words in describing the article, you obviously don’t agree.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Yes, that too.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
I guess I cant say for sure that Zicam works, but I put a full court press on at the inkling of a cold with Zicam, vitamin c, echinacea, zinc, tons of water, green tea, and knock myself out at night with Nyquil. Usually goes away very fast and doesnt hit me very hard.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Your check is in the mail.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Wow. I can’t say I’ve ever asked anyone if it worked for them or not.
If you are prone to getting sick or to nasal problems, do yourself a favor and get/use a neti pot. It’s the best thing you could do and has a much firmer basis in actually working than products like zicam.

Read the Herbstreit article. He seems like a regular guy and a true sports geek. He reminds me of what ESPN used to be – regular sports fans like us who just happen to be in front of the camera.
I miss that version of ESPN.

Wasn’t McQueery friends with one of Sandusky’s kids growing up, maybe he was a victim at a young age too. And the sight of what he saw reminded him of the pain and fear that he couldn’t do anything to stop it. If not, than he is a big douche who did nothing and should be kicked to the curb.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:24 AM
Will he ride his bicycle while decked out in black pants, white shirt and red tie and pamphlet-filled backpack to practice?
Because fuck Jehovah Witnesses.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
.
I worked for a guy who was a Jehovah Witness.
He used to keep a stack of those watchtower pamphlets right on his desk and as if to implicitly encourage employees to take one. I never did. Never thought that was appropriate at work.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:28 AM
FUCK YEAH! Did they play for almost three hours?! They did on Monday and it was EPIC. Grohl is a helluva entertainer and that band can perform live, buddy.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:29 AM
since nobody wants to talk golf, fuck it…
tiger looks really sharp. he’s hitting his irons really well and while this short course allows him to keep the driver in the bag, he’s been striping it off the tee with his irons and fairway woods. short game is looking a lot less rusty and he’s finally making putts.
i dont wanna say he’s back, but a win would give him some awesome momentum heading into the presidents cup. who knows…maybe a win this week and a romp with his buddy stricker over some aussies is just what he needs to get back on track.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:30 AM
Yes they did. They were awesome. Their drummer (his name escapes me) is unbelievable, IMO.
Whatever Dave Grohl’s vocal cords are made out of, scientists should study it. No idea how that guy sings and yells (in tune) and puts it all out there like that and still has a voice at the end of the night.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:30 AM
OK, so forgive him for not stopping it. But I DO NOT forgive him for never once calling the cops even though he was the only eye witness.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:30 AM
As long as he’s not pushing it on me, that’s fine.
This one dude came to my uncle’s house twice in about an hour and both times my uncle politely told him he was not interested. The guy came back a third time about a half hour later and my uncle answered the door butt-ass naked. Jehovah Witness Guy said nary a word, turned around and walked away. He never came back.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:30 AM

November 11th, 2011 at 9:33 AM
Taylor Motherfucking Hawkins. He puts SO MUCH into his drumming. Did they have the screens atop the facility so you could see closeups of the guys? Hawkins always has this agonizing look on his face, like he’s at the tail end of a long run or struggling to get that final rep on the bench press. Ha ha. He’s awesome.
Spot on about Grohl. That dude he scream like no other. Did they encore with some acoustic then kick into electric halfway through “Times Like These” before doing a few more songs? They covered “Breakdown” by Petty and that was awesome. Obviously closed with “Everlong.”
November 11th, 2011 at 9:33 AM

November 11th, 2011 at 9:33 AM
tiger looks really sharp. he’s hitting his irons really well and while this short course allows him to keep the driver in the bag,
I’ve been saying he needs to totally re-do his schedule; Start playing courses like Riviera, Colonial, etc where his iron play sets him apart instead of the normal bomb and gouge courses he likes and won at before.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:34 AM

November 11th, 2011 at 9:34 AM
i liked was his distance control. these are tricky greens and you have to be in the right spots and he flighted his irons really well the past two days. even when he left himself 20 feet, he wasn’t in a horrible spot. between that and his short game, it’s great to see him sharp again instead of leaving himself long par putts.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:35 AM

/just where was Mike McQueary when the USS Cole was bombed?!?!?!?!?!
November 11th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
agreed…he’s not missing out on anything by having 5-8 super long drives in a tournament considering that at the masters, us open and british open, his driver isn’t going to kill him. he can spray it all over augusta and the opens are firm and encourage strategy enough that he won’t be at a distance disadvantage and can work around with woods and irons.
if he’s razor sharp with his approaches like he was in the past, he’ll be back to challenging every week. hate on haney all you want, but he was the best iron and wedge player in the world under him.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:38 AM
sorry, there’s no excuse.

TBL -
My sarcasm meter ran out of batteries earlier this morning. Were you serious on the Twitter machine when you said that you can’t remember ever seeing a MSU-UNC hoops game?
November 11th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
yes and no…technology only helps so much and, if you look at all the great putters out there, they’re almost all using blade style putters. the quality is kind of important, but a $2,500 cameron tour putter isn’t going to roll any better than an off the rack $300 cameron or a $70 cleveland classic.
it all depends on if the puttee is comfortable using it and the shape sets up well to their eye. more mental than anything, though they have done studies that show if an amateur gets told their putter was a pro’s old putter, they sink 1 more putt out of 10. too lazy to find the link but it was on golf digest.
November 11th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Agree on this. Driver, wedges, irons then putter in terms of make/quality in my book.

Jehovah Witness.
The last time they came to my door I was hungover and drinking. I demanded to see the bible verse that said if I was dying I could not get a blood transfusion. I asked them why they would let their children die for an obscure bible verse but is was so slurred it probably came out “yooouse gonna let yoursh childrensh jus die?” If anything I probably encouraged them to ‘save’ people.

November 11th, 2011 at 9:50 AM

The 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic will take place on the flight deck of the United States Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson. A temporary basketball court, lighting and seating for 7,000 spectators will be constructed off site and relocated to the flight deck the day of the game. A duplicate, redundant set-up will be installed in the hangar bay should inclement weather pose an issue on the deck.

How do you know. This coverup goes straight to the top! Trust no one!

Should have added the link for that info:

In that Post Gazette story, this would seem to be a pretty critical paragraph:
That seems to be a pretty critical juncture. The way this is written certainly lends credibility to the idea that Curley was involved in actively covering this up. Maybe I’ve missed it but that’s the first reference I recall seeing to an investigation into the 2002 incident.

Zona with a kick-ass recruiting class coming in next year. Definitely looks like Sean Miller has things moving in the right direction.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
starts every morning with a bad picture of some hot celebrity.
It’s part of the charm.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
Well, everyone knows Sandusky did it. But what this book presupposes is, what if he didn’t?
November 11th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Locks his tweets. OOh look at how important Butters is!
November 11th, 2011 at 10:02 AM
Vlad, you’re welcome in advance for the free 2 points tonight.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Growing up in the midwest you learned how to play in the wind. There were times where you would put the ball 3 feet to the left or right and let the wind do the rest.
/I don’t miss that shit
November 11th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
Actually, per this article, it looks like they scrapped the plan to build a second court below deck because of logistics issues and security concerns. Obama’s going to the game. And there’s rain in the forecast but not until midnight (tip off is at 7:15pm ET).
November 11th, 2011 at 10:03 AM
My guess would be Quicken Loans is paying a hefty price tag. Probably ESPN too.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
is this where we all point and laugh at Georgia Tech?
November 11th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
they paid for the UNC-MSU court with by selling all the black-market cell phones they found in the Bin Laden compound
November 11th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Yeah, I said that before I found out it was a corporate sponsored event.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I believe private donations are part as well.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
wish the game was on CBS instead of ESPN.
Haven’t looked but I’m guessing Shulman/Vitale
November 11th, 2011 at 10:09 AM
When do we start talking about the greatness of Carson Palmer?
/Top 25 QB
November 11th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
is this where we all point and laugh at Georgia Tech?
Yes, it is. I can’t wait for UGA to beat them in 2 weeks and the AJC can talk about how Johnson outcoached Richt again.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
That would be bad to just cancel the game. What would ESPN show for two hours? The Best of Chris Berman
November 11th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
do they play all their home games at that stadium or do they sometimes play at the dome? that place looks like a dump.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Jesus. They can’t sellout their home games at Bobby Dodd. There’s no way they could sell out the Dome. Their fans are garbage. The place last night wasn’t packed and it was against a top-10 team.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
do they play all their home games at that stadium or do they sometimes play at the dome? that place looks like a dump.
They play all their games there. It’s the oldest on campus stadium in the country. I think it looks cool during night games with the skyline in the background but it is a dump.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
So tip off is 4:15 local time, and sun set will be right in the middle of the game. The lighting and shooting backgrounds are going to be all eff’d up.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
And a chick was raped on campus right before the game. It’s in a shitty area.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
yeah they flashed to the coaches box one time and it looked like it was about to fall in on them.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
You have the Bulin Wall!
November 11th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
I read about that. It’s a great school, but they have such a hard time protecting their students. Reading the report about the rape last night was terrible.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
But what this book presupposes is, what if he didn’t?
I use this line all the time. It’s pretty much the premise of every Malcolm Gladwell article ever wrtitten
November 11th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
The lighting will suck but I guess it will make for some pretty scenery? The idea itself is cool but it completely fucks up the game. Glares on the court floor, wind gusts throwing off passes, moisture on the court from the ocean blah blah blah.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I read about that. It’s a great school, but they have such a hard time protecting their students. Reading the report about the rape last night was terrible.
It has been an ongoing issue for so long now with no sign of improvement. I know that’s part of being in a big city but the administration has to step up and increase security. There’s no excuse for the amount of crime that has happened on campus.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Has anyone seen Jon Ritchie talk about Sandusky and the PSU scandal? Insightful and honest stuff.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Seagulls shitting on the court during the game.
Actually, I hope that happens, it would be pretty funny.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
fuck you jon ritchie
/what paterno basically told him when JR chose not to go to Penn State
//stay classy JP

Looking for a job, don’t need a quick Google search of my name allowing potential employers to see how I spent a summer letting Juan Pierre dictate my mood
November 11th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
god damn michael bush was a great pickup off the scrap heap
November 11th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
good morning to you too, Negative Nancy.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
“Michael Bush was a great pickup off the scrap heap”
Must be an 8 team league.
November 11th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
From a story about McQuery in the NYT today: “McQueary did not spare details in telling Paterno about the shower rape.”
November 11th, 2011 at 11:07 AM
Matt, do you have a link to that? Also, be ready to jump into the next post with it.
