Penn State Campus Erupts In Wake Of Joe Paterno’s Firing

Joe Paterno was fired this evening. For the second night in a row, students are gathering across campus, changing and running around like dumb college kids. So far, there have been reports of fireworks, but no real trouble. And as I typed that, Gregg Doyel reports the first light post has been taken down. Stick with us tonight as we’ll try and follow the crowd as it goes from gathering to potential riot.
11:24 – An officer allegedly pushed a student. So it begins.
11:26 – ESPN reports two arrests and a smoke canister being fired.
11:27 – Lots of noise. Lots of people. (via @DailyCollegian)
From earlier – The CNN anchor does not know much about college football. Still, she’s done an admirable job and gotten the attention of many football fans.

Here’s video of students chanting earlier via @cjzero.
Also from earlier, PSU students chanted “Fuck The Trustees” live on CNN. (via @tlksuperstation)
[via @johnwertheim]
And here is the van getting flipped. Things seem to be quieting. What with the police using mace and whatnot.

Can we get the Oakland PD in there for some crowd control?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:30 PM
Penn State’s close enough to Morgantown to burn couches, no?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:31 PM
What a bunch of lunch boxes you guys are down south eh?!
You wouldn’t see any rioting up here in Canada over a silly game,,,oh wait.
Okey Dokey, let’s just forget I said that for Gretzky’s sake

Miz, I think it’s time to update your avatar to the Pedo State Bear that I think Rex is feverishly slapping together as we type

The CNN anchor
I’d demand she say the filthiest things in the English language. That accent is a weapon!
November 9th, 2011 at 11:34 PM
nah, apparently they are knocking down lamp posts instead
November 9th, 2011 at 11:37 PM
Since I’m not in State College right now, I’ve decided to join in by eating a 25 cent pack of Spicy Shrimp’esque Ramen Noodles, chugged a deuce-deuce of Natty Light, and threw my running shoes over the power lines.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:42 PM
That anchor woman should go see a dentist and a speech therapist.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:42 PM
Yeah but we had a perfectly good reason for that riot…oh wait, never mind.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:42 PM
I don’t know, man…I might do it if somebody could whip up pedobear in the blue and white like this.

So the board of trustees announced that the president is no longer the president and JoePa is no longer the head football coach. They didn’t announce that their employment has been terminated. Is it possible that–for now–they’ve been stripped of their titles but remain employed?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:18 AM
wait, they riot over this, but not because kids got raped?
outrageous outrage

just heard another news van is down

If what I was told tonight about the details of the new allegation in Sandusky child sex case is true, it will horrify the public.

Too bad Paterno wasn’t coach at Mississippi State. Outside of a Shoney’s, I don’t think there is an actual town that rioters could burn down.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:31 AM
I am seeing some pretty sick stuff that some other sport blogs are saying is coming out tommorrow as well
November 10th, 2011 at 12:33 AM
If what I was told tonight about the details of the new allegation in Sandusky child sex case is true, it will horrify the public.
I heard a rumor that McQueary was also a victim and didn’t report it initially bc of his shame.

Where are these rumors? I only go to this blog, my sports blog knowledge is very minimal.

They actually go way back, pre-Penn State.

tey meaning sandusky and mcqueary?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:38 AM
Mcqueary has been friends with sanduskys son since they were kids. His dad and sandusky are friends
November 10th, 2011 at 12:38 AM
I heard a rumor that McQueary was also a victim and didn’t report it initially bc of his shame.
Well that certainly changes things for MM if true… Not Paterno though.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:39 AM
The public is horrified. Hence the reaction.

Can we please get a post tomorrow about OREGON releasing more Willie Lyles documents
November 10th, 2011 at 12:43 AM
If this were a bunch of Middle Easterners protesting or chanting in support of action against the US, the media would be yelling about how this is proof that Muslims just don’t get it. They support terrorism, etc. So my question is: are Middle Easterners allowed to point to this as protest that we don’t get it? A bunch of idiots are marching in support of a football coach (not even a political figure), who did almost nothing to stop the molestation of children. Really?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:45 AM
Seriously though… A major league baseball catcher was kidnapped tonight.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:46 AM
What he said. When you factor in Curley being born and raised, and the shadow of JoePa, to say this thing is incestuous is an understatement. Add in the insulated, and isolated, world of State College, and I’m not surprised this stayed so quiet. I do give a lot of MM leeway on this one, however, for a variety of reasons, including the aforementioned.

Remember Mark Madden? The dude who “called it” in April. Here is his latest tweet:
Don’t believe this can get worse? Give it 72 hrs. People really digging into Second Mile. Even more shocking revelation is ahead. Yikes.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:47 AM
Someone should report this dude to homeland security.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:47 AM
Think you’re gonna have to volunteer to write that one, Vlad. Not sure that’s on the map right now.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
Anyone see the interview of the fairly well-spoken kid on Sportscenter about 5 minutes ago? He mentioned that one of the individuals Paterno reported the incidents to was in law enforcement – haven’t heard that before, is it true?
I could understand some anger about JoePa being gone if McCreary (who I believe was an eyewitness) is still employed by PSU…is he?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
Grizz, what really sucks is I have some great friends with 2nd Mile. This is just sad all the way around.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:49 AM
Cal Ripken Jr. and Andy Reid are pederasts?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:49 AM
He picked a great night to get kidnapped. In all seriousness Ramos is a good kid and I hope he gets released unharmed.
Going to bed see y’all tomorrow.

I feel terrible for the rational folks at Penn State, especially you Rex. I had a great time on my visit to happy valley. Good people.

i’ve watched enouhg boardwalk empire to know that sometimes the cops are the bad guys. no surprise if coverup extended to cops, with the tangled relationships in this little world. a lot of people profited and had better lives because of penn state football’s status
November 10th, 2011 at 12:52 AM
I love that ESPN felt compelled to refer to the Rose Bowl as the “Rose Bowl presented by Vizio” in their write-up of the firing. Solid work.

And I’m even a tOSU alum. lol My brother is a PSU alum, however.
Spence had a great time at Penn State for the Bama game. As God is my witness, on a couple of occasions during the game, he said “We” when referring to the Nittany Lions. #realtalk
November 10th, 2011 at 12:55 AM
someone just mentioned on Fb that jerry kill would be the rght guy to take over. his combo of sincerity and coaching skill
i of course typed that he would be a shaky pick

Fuck these kids. So stupid.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:57 AM
@Vladimir Crouton
I’m no nutjob. I’m just saying look at this in context. A bunch of idiots are marching in support of a guy who probably covered up a child molester’s misdeeds. What does that say about our society? Are we any better than crazies elsewhere in the world? I could not be more disgusted right now. Paterno and his colleagues did nothing to stop a child molester, and people are supporting him? What the hell?
November 10th, 2011 at 12:58 AM
Penn State from what I’m seeing is not USC. I would not eats Nerdz outta any of these broads’ asses.
November 10th, 2011 at 12:58 AM
Do you think the QB coach, or whatever McCreary is, was on the BoT agenda tonight? He’s done. We all know that.
And this would be the first that anyone has mentioned JoePa telling the police. I’m guessing, since it is a rioting 19 year old saying it, it may be lacking some facts.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:00 AM
Fuck…My bad, bros… sorry for the light humor in a serious situation.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:04 AM
jbriaz, the deal is, i don’t think these rioters are supporting anything but the ability to riot. as i typed before, what’s outrageous is that there are riots now and not when the grandjury report came out. riot because the program aided and abetted a boy rapist, not because the head coach is fired because of the scandal
November 10th, 2011 at 1:05 AM
Indeed.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:08 AM
an NBA press Conf. at 1:07AM, what a news day already!
November 10th, 2011 at 1:10 AM
@vezina
I’m with you buddy. Hopefully, these students are just a bunch of idiots looking for an opportunity to destroy crap on a weeknight. It just frightens me as an American to see fellow Americans doing this in support of anything remotely associated with such a heinous crime. We should be better than that. We need to be better than that. We are better than that.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:10 AM
b.easy, maybe they’re taking this chance to announce that the wnba will be conducting a draft of NBA players, two per team
November 10th, 2011 at 1:10 AM
You clearly missed a variety of my comments tonight. Most were of the /dick joke variety, so buck up.

November 10th, 2011 at 1:15 AM
Gary Schultz would be who the kid was referring to, I’m pretty sure. Schultz’s role, from an NPR article: “As the senior vice president for finance and business — which gives him oversight of university police — ”
I have no idea if he facts of that role means someone that JoePa would have considered a police, or if it just meant he signed off on the police budget or something like that.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:17 AM
Contractually obligated, I’d assume.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:17 AM
Fair enough, Quick question…. How the fuck are they going to find a Jury for this trial, Rex? It’s nearly impossible. Does Sandusky plead guilty, or does he do the moral thing and just off himself and leave his life savings to a child abuse charity fund under a anonymous name to save the most minimal of face (which is damn near impossble)? God knows he doesn’t want to face this mess. Just a thought, you’re smarter on this content than I am.

a trial might be the best thing, in case there is more wrongdoing and worngdoers to uncover. get as many as you can, now, and start the recovery

wow…i finally fucked up a quote on here. time for bed.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:27 AM
No way in hell this goes to a trial of his “peers”. (seriously, hang yourself, Sandusky). At any rate, It will be damn near impossible to appoint a jury. That will be the tallest of orders for a defense.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:27 AM
Sandusky has already stated he is not guilty
November 10th, 2011 at 1:30 AM
I can see this attempted.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:32 AM
Well, his lawyer stated he will plead not guilty, but who knows.
Also, how does a guy facing 40 counts of sexual abuse get out on bail?
November 10th, 2011 at 1:33 AM
Very difficult to prove insanity in a murder case.. damn near impossible to prove in a child molestation case. This fuck was spry enough to coach a defense at a division 1 level, correct? Good enough to me. Yet, I don’t know the law….. just logic.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:33 AM
This shit is just insane. Just a horrible, sad tragedy that is above sports.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:34 AM
Im thinking he could plead that he was mentally ill.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:36 AM
I will watch with fascination as his team puts together a strategy.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:41 AM
Sandusky grew up living above a gym. You see it coming, right? He was abused as a kid. Probably some guy there liked to show him how to shower.
And he probably was.
Still, fuck him.
November 10th, 2011 at 1:52 AM
Given my reaction to this story, you guys might be shocked to learn that I work in criminal defense. Here would be some of my quick hitting points on your questions.
1. The trial has to be moved for sure. Probably Philly.
2. The DA is not offering a deal to save his life, so this will go to trial. This case is way to public for him to offer a deal, unless of course it is life without parole (which really isn’t a deal).
3. Picking a jury will be very difficult. The jury pool will likely have to be much larger to get even a remotely fair jury. Regardless, child molestation is always the worst type of case to take in front of a jury. Basically anyone with a child will hate this man.
4. He is 67. This will take two years to get to trial, but basically he’ll spend the rest of his life fighting this case.
5. If he is convicted, he better pray that he is put in a special lockup away from general population.
6. The insanity defense won’t work. I don’t know PA’s rules on using the defense, but it would just be poor strategy. It would likely only engender more ill will with the jury. Seem like he is dodging responsibility.
7. His attorney also has the poor task of trying to tear apart the testimony of several children.
Point being: Sandusky is fucked.
November 10th, 2011 at 2:08 AM
But it gets better! Didn’t Sandusky bring kids to bowl games? Hmm. Sounds like bringing a kid across state lines for kinky stuff. The feds don’t fuck around!
