Joe Paterno Will Retire At the End of the 2011 Season
AP is reporting that Penn State coach Joe Paterno will retire at the end of the 2011 season. After 46 years as a head coach and 409 wins, he will be allowed to leave with dignity, a dignity, considering the recent child sex abuse scandal, he ceded the right to in 2002. The decision was Paterno and Penn State’s prerogative and it’s they who must deal with the visceral reaction and consequences.
The decision to let Paterno retire on his own terms is consistent, as it displays the same insensitivity and cowardice Penn State University has displayed throughout. Given the gravity of the controversy, the proper question should not be whether Joe Paterno coaches the remainder of the season. It should be whether there should be a remainder of the season at Penn State.
[Update: Paterno's Statement]
I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.
I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.
That’s why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can. This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.
My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University.

He doesn’t deserve to get a swan song. He should be gone today.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
So firing Joe Paterno and canceling PSU’s season serves what purpose, exactly?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
So there are two Paterno retirement posts?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
I disagree. JoePa and the Ginger should be out. The current players should be allowed to finish their season. They aren’t guilty of enabling a rapist to do his worst.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Does it appease the victims?
Does it serve as retribution to the current players, coaches, staff, 99% of whom had no idea what was going on?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
so, two paterno posts on the same topic.
the fridge has been nuked.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Did FSV tell TBL not to write about this situation anymore?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
I disagree.
I strongly disagree.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
JoePa should be fired.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
He’s on a conference call with his PI looking into McNair’s death.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Stoops to PSU
November 9th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
Would the blogosphere and sports journalism world feel more comfortable knowing that their print created a punishment for people who may or may not have deserved for a dereliction of duty they may or may not have been aware of given we aren’t exactly sure who knew exactly what at this point? (or are we? what did JoePa know for sure?)
November 9th, 2011 at 10:25 AM
not sure, but JDIDDY3000 has free reign
November 9th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
There isn’t a single individual at Penn State with the moral authority to do so…
November 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Not. Good. Enough.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I’m not positive that serves a purpose outside the realm of PR.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
I think the board should do so whether you think they have the moral authority or not.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
He should resign immediately. This will be a complete circus.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:27 AM

It shows that no one man is ever bigger than the mission and values of a university. And it shows people of power that there are more victims for their crimes than those directly involved.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Let the man speak before you burn him at the stake, he’s earned that right.
I want him to come out and apologize. I want him to admit he was wrong. I want him to say that he personally confronted Jerry and that his friend of 40 years swore on his mothers grave that it wasnt true. He couldnt bring himself to believe it and he let his friendship cloud his judgment in that situation. I can rationalize with that.
The rest of the people involved can burn in hell.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
99% of whom had no idea what was going on?
how many people on the Titanic saw the iceberg?
how many people at the great straw man fire of 1937 had a partially built strawman?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
For one, that is good enough as this is about the worst PR nightmare imaginable. Secondly, he should be fired because he slow footed THE RAPE OF A BOY.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
Well if an employee of mine raped children at my work and I did nothing to have him arrested and that former employee went on for another decade plus raping kids while I kept inviting him to the christmas parties, lending my name to his children’s charity and I allowed him to bring kids to my office for sleepovers than yeah, I would expect to be fired.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
If he wants to try to do something with a semblance of dignity this is his only play.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
I’m not positive that serves a purpose outside the realm of PR.
now is not the time for PR, it’s Nebraska week! PR is all bullshit.
/nebraska week?

November 9th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Just heard report that PSU is asking Tom Ridge to become acting President.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Both perfectly well said.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Place him and all the suspects like McQueary on paid administrative leave
Gets him off the sidelines, doesn’t fire him and leave yourself open to legal exposure.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Care to diagram how I created a straw man?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
Sucks for PSU fans. The pre-game pat downs are going to be insane.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
Care to diagram how I created a straw man?
no, I did, about the titanic.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I think the board should do so whether you think they have the moral authority or not.
yep. moral authority is clearly lacking at this place, so having the ability to terminate based on moral authority is worthless. a swift, decisive action needs to be taken, that action is a termination today.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
strongly disagree…the man responsible for the program’s relevancy for a half century should be granted a muted, distracted send-off. it would be leaving on a somber note, but going recluse wouldn’t help the healing process for anyone involved.
PSU fans deserve it and so does paterno. no, football is not more important, but nobody’s perfect and lets not react like this funeral march is akin to retiring jerry sandusky’s number or something.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
Good call, though they can fire him and pay him the remainder of his salary without any concerns if they want to avoid legal issues. His deal expired at the end of this year anyway. Either way having him on the sidelines/in the coaches box makes little sense.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Playing devil’s advocate:
a) not his employee – no longer under his jurisdiction
b) reported incident to the person who did have jurisdiction
c) reported incident to person in charge of campus police
d) he’s only an honorary board member at the second mile. Other honorary board members you may have heard of: Cal Ripken, Arnold Palmer, Andy Reid, Mark Wahlberg, Lou Holtz, etc.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I’m going to agree with Spencer. I’m fine with this outcome.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
That horse has already left the barn. Paterno and Fire Truck will not face criminal legal action, but the civil exposure will be there, whether or not you have them coach another game. It could shape up to be a 9 figure lawsuit against the University and the individuals involved. I do agree with you however, that they all need to go, now. Period.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
justice will be served to those who were victimized, those who should face punishment for their actions or inaction, will.
right now, in terms of Paterno coaching beyond this point, is the court of public opinion looking for justice they feel the right to have, even though Paterno’s career going forward will have no impact in serving justice to those who actually deserve it.
I do not agree with Paterno coaching the rest of the season, but whether he coaches or not, it won’t change anything for the victims. this anger and hatred needs to be directed at the true monster, the spotlight needs to be kept on him.
With the vengence spotlight on Paterno, it will turnoff as soon as his story is done, and the rest of this scandal will likely be forgotten and turned into a byline down the road.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
It took me like 10 minutes to realize these were two different posts. Ughhhhhh can someone please just put up a diversion post every once in a while? I hate having to think about this shit so much.

I see, as usual, you’ve not thought this through and just want to swing the hammer without weighing the peripheral consequences.

November 9th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Which presumes he knew the employee was raping kids. I think it presumes otherwise unless we’re going to go full throttle in our judgment of Paterno and say he is as equally reprehensible as Sandusky.
I think the play is to come clean as full as legall possible. A complete mea culpa. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think he knew specifics. I think what he was told was not specific enough, or direct enough to overcome whatever feelings Paterno had of his former friend. Much like the offensive playcalling, etc. in the last year, I’m assuming JoePa knew very little.
Quitting now, or being fired now, creates too much of a vacuum with Penn State and makes them more vulnerable to the attacks they must now suffer. Some of that is obviously deserved. But by and large, we are still talking about a fantastic institution that must do all it can do to salvage its reputation. For me, JoePa is old guard. Pre-Sandusky. I think he could serve as a bridge from the old PSU to what must become the new PSU.
Of course all of this assumes he had no reason to believe the worst instead of merely hiding his head in the sand.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
the man responsible for the program’s relevancy for a half century should be granted a muted, distracted send-off. it would be leaving on a somber note, but going recluse wouldn’t help the healing process for anyone involved.
while he is responsible for the programs relevancy, he is also partially (in this case, any responsibility is very bad) responsible for its plunge to crap.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Did any other honorary board members hear about Sandusky fucking a 10-yr-old in the ass in the Penn State locker room?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
What does it matter to them, or anyone who’s writing about this story? Just ride the wave of emotion, baby! Consequences be damned!
November 9th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
I went with the immediate rowdy future, Duffy went with history, and Stephen Douglas is expected to soon go with how much JoePa’s nose resembles Gonzo’s.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
he’s PARTIALLY responsible, which is why he wouldn’t be given the viking pyre to valhalla he would’ve if this never came to light.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Per the grand jury testimony he was told that Sandusky was doing “something sexual in nature” to a 10 year old in the shower. But yeah, he didn’t know that the guy was technically balls deep in the kids ass, so he’s in the clear.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Again, devil’s advocate, do you know that’s what he heard?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Ummm…ok, but he could have already done this if he wanted to. And don’t give me the fact that his presser was cancelled and he couldn’t. Joe Paterno IS Happy Valley and PSU football. He can speak anywhere, at anytime that he wants to.
That old man has NO CLUE what he’s in for when they go on the road for the last 2 weeks. He’ll wish he would have stepped down sooner.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Most poignant comment on this site this entire week. Wayyyyyyyyyy too much focus on JoePa.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
ritty did you reach the grand jury testimony about Joe’s knoweldge? It’s spelled out.
The old sicko needs to go.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
I know quite a few PSU alums and most of them are pretty sharp. That being said, so of them are out of their minds in the fact that they think the whole University is being castigated. No one is questioning your academic prowess, leaders that you have graduated, or the R&D achievements that you have put out. MAKE the fucking distinction; you people are smarter than that!! You MADE Paterno the face of your University, and an institution in the PSU and CFB community. When THAT person does a morally bankrupt thing like this, he HAS to be held accountable, along with the higher ups who fucked this up beyond belief. It’s REALLY tough to hide behind his “legal obligations.”
November 9th, 2011 at 10:43 AM
board members you may have heard of: Cal Ripken, Arnold Palmer, Andy Reid, Mark Wahlberg, Lou Holtz, etc.
List of people who need to fire their publicists.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Which presumes he knew the employee was raping kids.
so we have both sides of that story already, the one where the guy said he told Paterno (him and his dad) and then the one where the guy said he was told by Paterno, but we don’t think he knew? That’s not even something we can presume?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:44 AM
BTW, I’m by no means arguing he should be absolved of all/any responsibility. There is no way he escapes this unscathed and deservedly so. It just seems the vitriol is actually higher for JoePa than for the person actually committing these heinous crimes.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Methinks he didn’t, because it’s…jarring.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
I don’t think he knew specifics. I think what he was told was not specific enough,
I love that this is what you’re willing to presume
November 9th, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Isn’t that the truth. There are very few adults covering this story, that much is apparent. Paterno was negligent, that much seems clear. He probably had to step aside. But the media is out with pitchforks as if Paterno himself is the child rapist. The pendulum has swung too far.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
They were sexual abused Joe, they don’t have hemorroids.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Joe was around 80 years old when this reported shower incident happened. He heard a story from an eye witness but never witnessed the incident himself. He reported it to his superiors because they’re the only ones who have the ability to kick the rapist off campus.
Everyone is angry because NO ONE called the cops but why is all the wrath focused on Paterno exclusively? I am far more angry at the 28 year old who caught Sandusky in the act and didn’t do anything other than call Paterno.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
I didn’t read the testimony. I was under the impression JoePa wasn’t told specifics. Not sure where I got that. I guess that invalidates a lot of what I said. Sorry to waste your time.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
“With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more”. Yeah Joe, you should have, you really should have.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
I know I’m shocked that people are focusing on one of the most revered coaches in CFB history being a key member of team: ignore the pederast for a decade+.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
you mean those gigantic glasses don’t have a REAH-VIEW MIRRAH?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
That dude has got a free pass so far. If I’m a parent of one of the victims, I’m pissed at that dude, too. This whole thing seems like a cousin of Genovese Syndrome.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
exactly.
hopefully there will be actual sports related posts coming up.
Hell, i’d take an unsolved mysteries post about mcnair over this for the rest of the week.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
It’s consistent with the character Paterno has displayed for the last decade. His constant feud with Bobby Bowden over the “Most Wins” Record. His refusal to step down regardless of the ebbs and flows of college football or his own health.
Make no mistake: Paterno wasn’t going to be fired by the PSU BOT. They don’t have the balls to do that to the man who built them. This is as close to a compromise as they were going to get.
Joe Paterno made the last decade of his career about himself. Why should anything small like a child rape scandal get in the way of that?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I am far more angry at the 28 year old who caught Sandusky in the act and didn’t do anything other than call Paterno.
This, right here. I would have cracked open the rapist’s skull and dealt with the consequences.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I was under the impression JoePa wasn’t told specifics.
He was told something sexual in nature had taken place in the shower between Sandusky and the little boy. JoPa also commented that the GA was VERY, VERY upset and disturbed when he came to him. JoPa knew whatever happened must have been very serious based on what the GA told him.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:49 AM
I’m not shocked, regardless of your ridiculous sarcasm. JoePa did wrong…but the focus is way off kilter.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
I guess that invalidates a lot of what I said.
I cannot tell you how many times in life that was the thing I was supposed to have said.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:51 AM
You have to understand JoePa’s role in everything beyond football as well. He lives/breathes for everything PSU and the academic aspect of everything was always WAY more important to him. Don’t you think we’d love to be running Paul Jones out there at QB this season? But, he didn’t make grades, so JoePa suspended him for THE YEAR.
Without his effort, we wouldn’t have had the R&D facilities, the campus growth, etc. that has occurred the last half century. There’s a reason his name is on the Library on campus and not the football field. There is no clear divide between the university, the football program and JoePa.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
Yeah, sure you would have, tough guy. Imagine walking in and seeing someone you quite likely revere as a father figure fucking a boy in a shower. It’s almost certainly the most shocking thing you’ve ever seen. Probably turns your world upside down a little bit, don’t you think?
I don’t fault McQueary for his reaction in the moment, or within a day or two of the incident. But after it became apparent nothing was happening, you have to pursue it. THAT is where lots of people dropped the ball.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
I get the anger towards Joe as someone who has built his reputation as an educator of young people. I harbor that anger myself towards Joe, actually.
But really, at this point, you’d almost think it was Joe that was the actual pederast, the way the narrative is currently being written.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:52 AM
If they put up a post on all the sickos involved, I’ll be an equal opportunist with venting my rage at all of them.
They are all a bunch of sick turds.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Correct and well articulated.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Joe was in his mid seventies. The 28 year old went to the person who RUNS THE ENTIRE CAMPUS AND TOWN OF HAPPY VALLEY. A person who he and everyone at PSU considers to be God. If the 2 of them couldn’t figure out that they have to go to the cops with this, the fuck ‘em both. They both deserve to be fired IMMEDIATELY. Instead, the kid has been promoted up the ladder. How do they look at each other every day without remembering the morning they discussed the rape of a child?
November 9th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
Penn State you are so screwed. I hope they get sued to the stone age and shut that school down and let the football stadium rot.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Yeah, I had that awakening a few years ago. It’s hard to do on the Internet, but enlightening when it happens.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Agreed. Make no mistake about it, this will tarnish his image plenty. Firing him now would scar or punish him no more than he will already be.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:55 AM
Well, we all know Sandusky is going to burn. Human nature dictates we seek to find out the how in this case. How did a man get to do this for 15 years. How did no one see anything or do anything to stop it? Then you find out that there weren’t just some signs that something was wrong, but rather eye witnesses to this. You then look at those in charge, and whether some dude has the word “President” on his office door or not, JoePa runs that school. He is the one that has the most power. The fact that he knew something was going on and reported it to his superiors (as if there really are any superiors to him at PSU) and left it at that is tantamount to being a damn accessory as far as I’m concerned.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:56 AM
JoePa is the second most powerful man on campus behind the president. The word “revered” doesn’t begin to describe JoePa on that campus. He can kick whomever out of his locker room, his practice, his program, his campus, he so desires. I’m not buying anything else.
I totally agree with your second paragraph.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Joe Pa better get a real good lawyer because of all the civil suits he’s going to spend the rest of his life giving dispositions.
Welcome to the Neverland Ranch Club at Beaver Stadium. A $100 million donation gets you all-you-can-eat stadium food and bear and nice leather seats. All proceeds go to the Child Rape Fund.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Everyone is angry because NO ONE called the cops but why is all the wrath focused on Paterno exclusively? I am far more angry at the 28 year old who caught Sandusky in the act and didn’t do anything other than call Paterno.
It’s difficult to gauge how we’d react if we had seen that scene play in front of us. I’d hope I wouldn’t have ran to call my dad. I hope I would have walked in there and beaten Sandusky bloody.
What I find harder to reconcile is his continued silence. If I see that scene and then see the same guy walking around campus (WITH CHILDREN), there’s no way I keep my mouth shut. No matter what may or may not have been the answers provided by PSU’s authority figures.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
All of this.
November 9th, 2011 at 10:58 AM
He’s 84.
They better get those depos now.

November 9th, 2011 at 10:59 AM
So they have to blow up the entire PSU football program right? I can’t see JayPa and Mike McQueary still hanging around.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
The disgust for Sandusky is beyond reproach. Anything he gets is not nearly what he deserves.
McQueary will have to live with his inaction for a long time. That will not be easy and will not come easy to those he interacts with.
For Paterno and the others in positions of power at Penn State should be ashamed. Joe, as well as several others, had the ability to get that filth off of their campus at any point in time. I’m not sure how Joe and the others can think anything else.
For healing to begin, all involved must move on… and quickly.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
Alright. I’m sick of this story. Doesn’t matter how many people are fired or thrown in jail, justice will never be served.
Can we go back to talking about bewb secks soon?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:00 AM
I get the anger towards Joe as someone who has built his reputation as an educator of young people. I harbor that anger myself towards Joe, actually.
But really, at this point, you’d almost think it was Joe that was the actual pederast, the way the narrative is currently being written.
Here’s the thing: Sandusky is finally in jail. He’s going to trial. I have no doubt he’ll be found guilty and spend the rest of his life in jail. It’s everyone who ENABLED that monster that needs to have a swift rebuke. After reading the indictment, allowing Paterno to leave at the end of the season is NOT SWIFT ENOUGH, nor does it really constitute a rebuke.

I think the compromise that will play out is that he’ll coach Saturday at home where he can, in effect, say goodbye, then he’ll be placed on leave Sunday or Monday. They’re buying time with this “special meeting” this week. They can’t send him on the road for the last 2 weeks. The circus will be too much.

chicken stew. tasty, and perfect for the weather
November 9th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
But really, at this point, you’d almost think it was Joe that was the actual pederast, the way the narrative is currently being written.
He is the only individual coming out of his house and waving to supporters with a big ass smile on his face, making unbelievably insensitive and stupid comments. Not only should he not be coaching he should be sitting in a padded room somewhere smearing shit on the walls.
Also, JDIDDY3000 is a douchecanoe of the highest order
November 9th, 2011 at 11:04 AM
supposedly some lemon-garlic chicken in a lettuce wrap.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
my gf made baked ziti last night. she made two huge pans so I will be eating it for a week.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:05 AM
Joe had no authorization to do anything other than what he did. He didn’t witness the incident but he reported it to his superiors. While we all wish he would have gotten pissed off like we are now and called the cops himself, HE DIDN’T WITNESS THE INCIDENT. Would all of you immediately call the cops on your friend if some random person came up to you and told you a story about your friend fucking a kid in the shower?
Personally, I’m the most deeply disturbed by the fact that there were numerous rumors about this guy for years and years yet he was able to continue with recruiting kids for the charity and his strictest punishment from the school’s AD was asking for his gym keys.

I’m making a tomato barley soup. With a salad
November 9th, 2011 at 11:06 AM
I fucking love it. I’m also going to do some sauerkraut with italian sausage. Get the fresh kraut, saute an onion and some garlic, add the kraut, white wine and a bay leaf or two and top it off with beef stock. Let it simmer for an hour or so and put that on a hoagie with an italian sausage and spicy mustard. So good.

Hey – ATL_Badger – what part of Atl do you live? I’m in alpharetta, currently work 85-clairmont area.
Right now I live and work just outside of Marietta. Hate living out here though, so I’m moving ITP before the year’s up. How do you like alpharetta? Little too sprawly for me.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Absolute fucking bullshit. Here’s what a human being who was not worried about the “Penn State Brand” would say: Mike, give me 2 minutes. Get in my car, we’re going to the police station and you’re going to tell them EXACTLY what you saw.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
spaghetti is a terrible date meal unless you’re going to brush, rinse, and pop a whole pack of tictacs
November 9th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
Ooooo. Bad date food. Too easy to make a mess.
I make excellent spaghetti… and making a mess is usually a good way to make fun of yourself. It has worked quite well in the past. Haven’t you seen lady and the tramp? If she gets all bent out of shape that’s a huge red flag anyway.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
I had Japanese last night for the first time ever. It was a date! That’s cool how they cook it in front of you. It was a TON of food, though. I’ve got plenty of leftovers.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:10 AM
ALL OF THIS. I read her bullshit line and just shook my head.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:11 AM
Awesome. Hibachi restaurants are great.
/slow clap
November 9th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
OK but why put that responsibility solely on Joe? The guy called his DAD first and he and his dad came up with the plan to call Joe instead of going to the police!
November 9th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
then i’m not putting out.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
unless you’re going to brush, rinse, and pop a whole pack of tictacs
how is that any different than most meals? I’d argue anything with a lot of onions is worse. I’m not looking to make out 5 seconds after we’re done with dinner. Sheesh people.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:12 AM
Hibachi is great, agreed Ndub, Im already full before he’s even done cooking everything. Usually good for 2-3 meals.

Just got finished with a project near Powers Ferry – Terrill Mill. That commute sucked from Alpharetta.
I’m actually in Forsyth County part of Alpharetta – it’s OK – everything is convenient and the traffic is not as bad as Johns Creek (where I moved from). Schools are good and the parks and rec sports for the kids is good – both game changers for me.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:13 AM

Good first date meal: seafood provencal. It’s just cooked seafood in a tomato and veggie sauce. Can’t mess it up.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
@ SG, did you witness something like this in the past and do nothing or something? strange commentary…
November 9th, 2011 at 11:13 AM
It wasn’t a random person, though. It was a member of his staff. JoePa AT LEAST has to talk to Sandusky, a long-time friend and assistant, about the subject. And it doesn’t have to be an immediate call to the cops. But, for chrissakes, ask around and see what’s going on.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
I think you mean Teppenyaki. I personally don’t care for them. Its a little gimmicky.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Agree that Joe should be gone now. McQuery too.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
If you’re in a mandatory reporting state, you HAVE to report something if you SUSPECT any abuse towards a child has occurred. Whether or not you witnessed the act is IRRELEVANT. When you work at an educational institution, you have the obligation to report possible criminal incidents (even if it involves adult on adult behavior). That goes for people who work at social service agencies, YMCA, day cares, etc. He HAD to report to authorities (real police, not bogus campus police) what he had been told and he failed to do so.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
Schools are good and the parks and rec sports for the kids is good – both game changers for me
Oh yeah… I didn’t know you had kids. Commuting into and out of johns creek would be a bitch… that area is a clusterfuck. but I can’t see living ITP with kids, unless I was rich.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
And I think this goes without saying, but…. on Saturday #weare Nebraska, right? I hope Nebraska drops 100 and JoePa doesn’t get carried off the field.

November 9th, 2011 at 11:16 AM

Not sure if I would even if I was rich. You ever meet some of those offspring? Yikes – privileged isn’t a harsh enough description.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:16 AM
Last night was my first experience. Yeah, yeah, I know…. My date ribbed me about it. The cook found out I was a newb and played a prank on me. He took a plastic bottle and acted like he sprayed me. I swear I saw the red stuff come out of it. I look at my plate, then my shirt, and then rub my face. The stuff that shot out of it was just a freakin cloth string. He got me good and the table laughed.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
I’ve thought a lot about this, and it seems easy to come to this conclusion in hindsight. Ideally yes, you go to the cops right away. But this has to be the biggest WHAT THE FUCK moment in the lives of anyone associated with this. I mean, up to and including a dead human being it would be hard to imagine walking in on something more shocking.
Ultimately they started out trying to do the right thing – notifying Paterno, then the Penn State administration. Okay, so it isn’t going straight to the cops but they were groping around trying to do the right thing. Where the whole process falls down is that the Penn State administration did nothing, and once it became clear they were doing nothing, Paterno et al did nothing to follow up.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
Saki-Bombs are always fun at the end of the meal as well.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:17 AM
don’t know why, that’s the only place that can cook mushroom and sprouts that i like to eat.
also got yelled at by the cook once in Montreal for talking. felt like i was in gradeschool.
then he said something in japanese and laughed drunkenly. it was a good night.

November 9th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
How is it “strange?” Because my opinion is different from yours?
All I’m saying is everyone is quick to put blame on Joe Paterno and thinks he should be fired because he didn’t do enough. While we all agree he should have done more, he actually did more than 1) the people in the charity who let the guy recruit kids for YEARS after he was initially investigated by the cops or 2) the school administrators who continued to allow the guy to bring kids on campus by himself!!
November 9th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
I don’t know Pennsylvania law, but I’m not sure that’s true at a university like it would be at an elementary school for example. I work at a university and if I’m a mandatory reporter, nobody’s told me. The football staff doesn’t coach minors so why would they need training in looking for signs of child abuse?
(I’m not excusing their failure to report. This is obviously pretty cut and dried abuse, no questions asked, no training needed. If I see that, I report it. I’m just saying they very well may have met their legal obligation.)
November 9th, 2011 at 11:20 AM
That’s cute. That got my 4 year old nephew too!

Hey Farva what’s the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:21 AM
Again, it’s Joe Fucking Paterno. He’s been there 61 years. Buildings are named after him. Statues are built. All he has to do is say the magic word and that boy lover is off campus.

I think it spans all educational levels (will re-research it). Many colleges do house programs and services for community organizations, host camps, etc. so they are ultimately liable
November 9th, 2011 at 11:22 AM
The worst part was that I firmly believe it was on my shirt. I had a red one on and the sauce was that color. I thought I was missing something.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:23 AM
Which means the assistant that witnessed the incident, the dad who took his son’s call and didn’t offer to call the police, Joe Paterno who heard about the incident second hand, and the school administration who heard about multiple incidents, all did nothing. Yet Joe Paterno is the sole focus of your wrath. That’s what I don’t get it.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:24 AM
I’m having pizza and hopefully some ass.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
me personally? I have not directed any sole wrath at Paterno. I haven’t stated anything to that fact. Others here may have, but I personally have not. the grad assistant, his father, Paterno, and everyone else notified is liable. I agree with you on that. I am just saying that is inaccurate to say Paterno did all that he was supposed to do.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:25 AM
It’s strange because it appears that you don’t feel that raping children is a crime that warrants getting the police involved before your boss.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
I’m having pizza and hopefully some ass.
pkiguy’s wife, or is that Friday?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
Fact: At this very moment, Pennsylvania State University employs multiple people who covered up child rape.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
They’re all gutless for not instantly calling the police, but I think the main point is that Paterno had nothing to fear there other than the taint on his precious football program. The assistant, the father, they all bow to Joe. Not saying that’s right either, that aspect is pretty sad in its own right.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:26 AM
That’s Friday. And she better not be expecting me to feed her, freeloader.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:27 AM
It’s strange because it appears that you don’t feel that raping children is a crime that warrants getting the police involved before your boss.
I don’t really think that’s what she’s saying at all.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:28 AM

Yet Joe Paterno is the sole focus of your wrath. That’s what I don’t get it.
I think they shouls ALL go down, and I certainly don’t think JoePa should get to go out coaching on Saturday and be carried off the field. He did the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM he could have done, if he would have done ONE OUNCE less he would be facing criminal charges…not what you would expect from a leader of men
November 9th, 2011 at 11:29 AM
WRONG. I’m fucking INFURIATED that the fucking 28 year old grad student consulted with his fucking father after he saw a little boy getting raped in the ass and their only thought was to call Joe fucking Paterno instead of the cops. I’m also mad that everyone wants to blame Joe for not calling the cops when he wasn’t the one who witnessed the incident!
November 9th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
This is great.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
Paterno is the focus of the wrath of so many because his fate was the most uncertain, he’s the only one who could have ended up being protected in this. McQueary and his dad are both going to be in that boat but if there’s a way to get them they’ll be gotten in one way or another, but I really cannot understand why so many of y’all think that those calling for Paterno to be fired are somehow giving Spanier and Sandusky a free pass. Paterno is going to be the highest profile one who did something wrong but is outside the touch of the law, he should still be culpable in one way or another because even though he didn’t legally do anything wrong he still did not act in the moral regard in which is to be expected of someone in his position. The law can take care of a lot of the wrong doing here, it cannot touch Paterno. But he still needs to pay. Completely separate from the literally guilty.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
Donte Stallworth ran a fucking guy over and called the police on himself, he has 100x more integrity than any of these assholes…
/did I just say that?
November 9th, 2011 at 11:33 AM
The kid should have called the cops. Since he didn’t and he told JoePa, Joe should have. Everybody should have. Joe deserves to be criticized for not calling the cops just like everyone else

I doubt he makes it through the season.

You know when you go to the zoo sometimes and watch chimps fling poop at each other? It’s kind of disgusting, but funny nonetheless. I’m watching that for close to 2 hours with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. It’s highly entertaining.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:36 AM
The freaked out, scared, moronic grad assistant went to the 2 people he thought of as god in his life, his father and Joe Paterno. Turns out both of those people were cowards too.
With great power comes great responsibility. JoePa has ALL OF THE POWER. And he took NONE OF THE responsibility. He’s a piece of shit, as is the grad assistant, the dad, the janitor, the charity, and everyone else. But none of those other people had Joe’s power. And he fucking BURIED HIS BIG ASS NOSE IN THE SAND. And then, more children were raped.

Agreed. Well put.

November 9th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
You fire him for knowing what happened. Make him an example to all the douchebag coach’s who think they are above the law
But that’s part of the problem: the natural reaction to any potential scandal is to shove it under the mattress and act as if it never happened. Given the propensity of shady, dirty behavior across the FBS landscape, this was not a surprise.
It seems they thought this was just like any other scandal they’ve encountered. It wasn’t.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:43 AM
Not telling anyone about what he heard from the eye witness is burying your nose in the sand. He told someone but he didn’t call the cops. The kid who saw something actually happen should have called the cops. You want to give him a pass because he was tramatized but he was the ONLY one who saw what happened and could give the cops the best chance at a case. He is a bigger shithead than everyone involved other than Sandusky. Fuck him and may he rot in hell.
November 9th, 2011 at 11:52 AM
do you know where mcqueery is, btw?
recruiting trip
November 9th, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Not giving him a pass. He should rot too. But if you’re the older, wiser, leader of the program…put the guy in your car and drive him to the police station for Christ sakes. Or maybe a week later, ask your AD “Hey, whatever happened with that Sandusky thing? I just saw him walking some boys around at practice. Is that really a good idea?”
November 9th, 2011 at 12:07 PM
Dude was almost 30 years old when he saw what he saw, he wasn’t some kid. He shouldn’t have needed to have his hand held to go to the Police station, just like he shouldn’t have needed to have his hand held to yell stop when he saw the deed. If he was scared to tell the cops what he saw, then I’d bet Paterno was right when he said the guy didn’t go into detail. I know collective outrage is intoxicating, and Paterno is the biggest fish to go after, and Duffy is trying to win a Pulitzer, so keep going with it.
November 9th, 2011 at 12:12 PM
You’re right, he shouldn’t have. But he did. And Joe wasn’t courageous enough to do it.
November 9th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
This is perhaps the most tragic story in all of sports. Cheating scandals, steroid scandals, point shaving, recruiting violations, betting scandals. Nothing else even comes close. Shame JoePa has to go, but it’s the right thing to do. I hope he will now spend some energy on helping the victims instead of helping the University hide this crap.
