Will Joe Paterno Coach Against Nebraska?
Three days of silence. On the fourth day, there was frantic action, escalating Joe Paterno’s departure from a probable action to all but a fait accompli. Reports indicate Penn State is preparing for the end of his tenure. Protesting alumni are burning diplomas. Media converged on Paterno’s house. The Big Ten may need to rename its championship trophy before its initial awarding. Penn State’s board of trustees is scheduled to meet on Friday. It’s conceivable his fate could be known before Saturday’s game against Nebraska.
Evidence of the rift is already apparent. The school cancelled Paterno’s press conference, denying him an opportunity to defend himself. His son planned to hold his own press conference, before cooler legal heads prevailed. The family claims there have been no discussions about Paterno’s potential retirement. Perhaps, the more accurate claim would be there have been no discussions that involved him.
Paterno, a perceived pillar of virtue for 46 years, will depart Penn State, leaving wreckage incalculably greater than that left by Woody Hayes at Ohio State. This isn’t sad. Sad is individuals not responding to pertinent information that could have spared others life-altering pain. Sad is that, with or without Paterno, Penn State will play a football game on Saturday. The game so beholden to revenue must go on, even stained by the darkest depths of human depravity.
Penn State can’t address the specific allegations for legal reasons, as they are staring at a nine-figure lawsuit. Though, the complete silence from university administrators has been astounding. Four days and counting after Penn State’s athletic director and vice-president were charged with covering up a child sex abuse scandal, not one university representative has addressed the issue in person and at the very least deflected questions. Even Jerry Sandusky opened his own front door.
Graham Spanier and Co. are displaying the same leadership and accountability vacuum that led to this scandal happening initially. There’s no more glaring sign that the university, not just the football program, needs a comprehensive fresh start as well.

The biggest tragedy is the ninety seconds that ABC is going to have to fill each year now that they won’t be able to do a piece with the announcers eating Peachy Paterno.

What percentage of these alumni will sheepishly be requesting a new copy of their diploma from the Penn State Registrar’s Office within a year?
I’ll say at least 40%.

This is the kinda Duffy is made for. Good job, dude. Sorry you have to be associated with the other shit that has been written here the last couple days.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:59 PM
I refuse to call into radio shows. It’s the biggest con in the world. You think you’ll get into a debate or debunk some shit they are saying, but then they cut you off and hang up and that’s that. I had to listen to the idiots calling in today to talk about a re-match and why Alabama deserves it and this and that. I then had to hear UGA fans call in to say they’ll beat LSU 28-17, and when laughed at, they change it to 28-24 (but still a win!).
November 8th, 2011 at 5:00 PM
For those burning diplomas, why not burn copies? With today’s copier tech, you can reproduce a pretty realistic copy. Burn that to make your statement (read: draw attention to yourself), but keep the original safe at home.
Amirite?
November 8th, 2011 at 5:04 PM
if people are reactionary enough to decide to burn a diploma, they aren’t likely to see this side of the argument.

November 8th, 2011 at 5:18 PM
Just wanted to acknowledge the various commenters who rightfully ripped TBL and the inexplicably dug-in stance he has taken. Thank you all for that.
As I have told a variety of people off-board, I have no problem with a post questioning what could have been done to stop this, or asking informed, intelligent questions, but laying it out there as he did, regardless of who I am and how I’m associated with this site, is straight trolling . As anyone who knows me will attest to, as will the dozens of media interviews I have done over the last 6 year, I am subjective to the point of irritating. Hell, Ray Gricar’s brother, my Father, vanished under similar circumstances almost a decade prior, with his body being discovered in a Dayton, OH river. I have no idea what happened to Ray Gricar (the theories of Suicide/Runaway/Foulplay can be recited in my sleep, much to the bored ears of every reporter I’ve dealt with more than once), and much like he did in his career, I have to let facts guide me, which sadly, there are very few pieces of actual evidence that allow me to do so.
My issue with his post, at it’s trolling “bloggy” finest, is not the possibility his vanishing could be tied to Sandusky, whether tangentially or otherwise, but laying it out there with loaded phrases that he could have easily prevented any of this from occurring in the first place. “Feel free to speculate as to why Gricar didn’t prosecute the scumbag”, TBL stated. Simple: Going back to needing evidence, he felt he simply did not have enough to successfully prosecute the case. I think we’re all aware that you do not go after people of note without a full arsenal. The original inquiry should have been enough for those around Sandusky to pay closer attention, as this was a known investigation. This comes as no surprise to anyone connected to PSU and there are numerous failures abound.
In addition to this, Jason McIntyre’s apparent glee in perpetuating this post, via tweets and comments, is just sad. He flippantly stated that we should really just be thankful he cast light on a disappearance nobody outside of State College is aware of. While I appreciate his obviously altruistic effort, we’re currently on an hour long show on Investigation Discovery, have appeared on every talking head show you can imagine (which I’ve loosely spoken of on here before. Case in point, the Nancy Grace and Geraldo stories), countless print interviews, numerous TV shows featuring it, and gosh golly, even were lucky enough to get the blessed “If you’ve seen this real life missing person…” at the end of an episode of Without a Trace. But as we all know, if it didn’t occur during a breaking news cut-in during Gossip Girl, did the DA really even disappear?
Through all of this, I attract an amazing number of conspiracy theorists who have preferred to tie it to Homeland Security, Witness Protection, Alien abduction, the Mob, etc, and now, today, I have something new to sift through. TBL said that other outlets reported on it, and yes, they did report that Gricar chose to not prosecute. I have zero issue with that, and regularly speak to a half dozen reporters who also know that.
If Gricar would have prosecuted him, and won, none of this would be occurring and JoePa could keep on keepin’ on for many years to come. So, yes, absolutely push that as a story line. At it’s best, it spares us from athlete dong, and at it’s worst, it’s incredibly destructive to those involved. Either way, I prefer the various posts stay up because they paint a valid picture of how he operates.

I’m listening to this Duffy radio thing right now. I’ll give him props for going on Arrington’s show in the first place given his relationship to PSU. Frankly I’m a bit shocked at the disconnect between thunderous-in-print Duffy and meek-on-the-radio Duffy. It’s like two different people.

Well written. I’m sure the last 4 days have been worse on you than most. Keep on keepin’ on. And here’s hoping a conviction in this case serves as some sort of pain killer, if at least for a short minute.
November 8th, 2011 at 5:27 PM
Rex I award you every single Paolo point I ever received. That might one of most the well-written comments that I have ever seen on here. From reading all of the comments last night and again this morning after the original post went up yesterday and from the terrible handling of this by TBL, I sort of figured what your relation was. This blog world of ours seems like a rather large one until we are no longer anonymous. And your openness and candor, when you could have just as easily responded to TBL with anger and no facts, is refreshing.
I don’t think I’ll see this place quite the same way again after how the last 24 hours have gone.

Now that is a politician wearing a district attorney’s mask. Add AG Tom Corbett to the mix. Due to political differences with him, he completely abstained from involvement in the Gricar case, but he’s all over this one now.
One thing I will note that, when it comes to victims of crime, most notably women and children, there was no bigger champion than Ray (yes, people said the same of Sandusky, so I firmly understand we don’t know what goes on in peoples’ heads). When he pushed for his position to be made full-time (amazingly, for years it was not), he took his new pay differential and quietly established a Women’s Resource Center with it. I know that this would kill him today.

Eh, maybe. What TBL has done is reprehensible, but he didn’t do it to me. So it seems somewhat childish to take my ball and go play somewhere else. But I question his journalist integrity and his personal motives with the initial post and how he’s handled this.
And it’s too bad too. The first post about this yesterday by Duffy, where he called for Paterno’s resignation, was a good one. I was hoping that was the beginning of some solid coverage. Turns out: not so much.

My involvement here has lessened due to a variety of posts, although more due to a new business venture that has moved me to Columbus and puts me less in front of a computer. To me, it doesn’t change my view much because we’ve all seen this from him before via the /humanize’d tag a large number of posts generate. The only real difference now is that you all have a connection, no matter how loose, to one of these posts. I have met a number of you in “real” life, even vacationed with some, and like many of you, come here for the camaraderie, dick jokes, CRM’s beard, Hernia’s captions, Lisk’s Liskyness, Artie’s picks, Duffy’s realistic and grounded views of life, and Chinese Ladies for Marriage.
In summary, I anxiously await Irish sending me a shiny new boat.
