In his prime, Smokin’ Joe was one tough son of a gun. His style wasn’t the prettiest, and he didn’t talk smack like Ali, but he would go toe-to-toe with anyone. God rest his soul.
November 8th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
Those sound nothing like Boston accents
November 8th, 2011 at 8:33 AM
I concur – definitely didn’t get the Masshole accent from that video.

Joe namath is to the Football HOF as Bill Mazeroski is to the baseball HOF. Overated, below average players who got in based on one game. Frauds
November 8th, 2011 at 8:50 AM
Joe Paterno’s normal Tuesday presser on the team’s upcoming opponent is still going to be held today and will obviously be well populated with reporters who are going to want answers on the Jerry Sandusky matter.
Why do I feel like there is a good chance Joe says something that might end his career today?
November 8th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
Can you please lose weight so I don’t have to pay for your fatty fat fat health insurance down the road?
November 8th, 2011 at 8:52 AM
It would be pretty sweet if, when Joe et al refuse to talk about anything but the Nebraska game, that all the reporters just stood up and walked out.
November 8th, 2011 at 8:53 AM
(In annoying high pitched Italian accent) – “Guys guys you know I can’t comment on that right now. You have your story – write what you want. We’re concentrating on a good, tough Nebraska football team.”
/”And I still plan on playing both kids at QB – they deserve it”
November 8th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
Fine by me. Everyone from and including Spanier to McQuery should be gone as soon as possible.
Sadly, this is basically the most heinous representation of the atmosphere Paterno had created the past 15 years. No accountability for your actions as long as you were “loyal.” Fuck that. That selfish, cranky old fuck held on long enough that even his most loyal supporters cant wait to see him gone.
November 8th, 2011 at 8:55 AM
The JoePa presser today has disaster written all over it. His pressers are already awkward because of his rambling answers and poor hearing. He’s never had one like this and at his advanced age will probably make for some cringe-worthy moments.
Hey, I saw Foo Fighters last night and I’m pretty sure it was the best show I’ve seen. They played for THREE FUCKING HOURS!

damn, that’s a long ass show.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
I agree and this is the sentiment to most of my friends I went to PSU with. I haven’t heard from a single person that doesn’t think Spanier and Paterno both need to go.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:00 AM
You’ll have a lot of fun. It seems like they genuinely want to rock your fucking balls off. Grohl is an epic performer.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
Super jealous, I’ve wanted to see the Foos for a long time now.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
After a few songs to open, Grohl talked to the crowd and after a bit said they were gonna play until they puke. Then he said, “but what if I puke right now?” He had jokes all night long, too, as you’d expect.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:01 AM
I hate that people would actually think this guy is a racist based on that comment. Like was said earlier, he’s a spiteful asshole.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:02 AM
i used to go to see music all the time…now, i rarely do. maybe once per summer, if that. last concert i went to was probably maiden in 2010.

Just imagine what Jay Cutler could do with weapons. That guy is special. Someone chisel Tom Brady’s face off the Rushmore and get Jay up there.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:04 AM
Why do I feel like there is a good chance Joe says something that might end his career today?
Yeah we were hitting on this last night, it’s going to be AWKWARD. The Sports Info Director is going to have to just come out, say b/c of the legal matters they cant go into it, and then the media are going to howl, and a few are going to ask questions anyway. It could be very Ken Clawson/Wategate ish….
It’s really going to be a portrait of a man detached from reality, no matter what is said or isn’t said.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
Wish I could have seen them up here in September. Damned midweek concerts
November 8th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
Earl Bennett looked legit last night, or the Eagles secondary is vastly overrated. Probably a combo of both.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
It’s just not worth it IMO to spend that amount of money for live musical performance. There are only a few bands I would hash out decent coin to see.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:05 AM
Liked the LaVar Arrington article with his thoughts on Sandusky. Very well done, and a good description of a guy with some real conflicting emotions.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
Wait until Saturday. Guys last home game (I’m assuming he wont have the class to step down before then) and he’ll be getting booed.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:06 AM
He has the best running back in the NFL right now. Pretty good weapon to have.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:06 AM

What a dumb bitch. It didn’t sound like a Boston accent to me.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
I was hearing the usual “this is Joe’s last home game” rumors that seem to crop up every year before the last home game.
This year, though, I would welcome a “Joe is stepping down for health concerns” announcement today.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
KC, apparently there was another one last night, which I again didn’t notice.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:08 AM
I am seeing a Van Halen tribute band the night after Thanksgiving with all my childhood buddies. I think it is going to be outrageous on many levels.

Joe Paterno’s normal Tuesday presser on the team’s upcoming opponent is still going to be held today and will obviously be well populated with reporters who are going to want answers on the Jerry Sandusky matter.

November 8th, 2011 at 9:09 AM
it’s probably gonna be fuckin’ awesome.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Of course I fell asleep watching the game last night and never made it to the store to get my copy of MW3.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
same here. there are a couple artists that I will see whenever they come around, but they are usually small shows and pretty relaxed. my days of going to arena/huge shows are pretty much over.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
Imagine Tom Brady having Forte behind him. Sigh.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
No he won’t – he won’t even be on the field. The fans won’t boo the current players. The only way he gets booed is if they make some kind of announcement over the PA system, which I highly doubt they will.
I think everyone’s on board that this weekend will be the end of the JoePa ever. Again – my guess is the BOT allow him to “retire for health reasons” at the end of the season.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:10 AM
The Krupa on the right did the old “bring an ugly girl with you to make you look hotter” deal. Girl on the left looks like she never stood in heals and her face was possibly flattened by a frying pan earlier.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
As much as I’d love to be a homer and agree, AP is still the best. And Shady McCoy just made Major Wright look stupid again.
Very impressed by the Bears though. Forte bounces back from two fumbles, Jay makes a couple throws that only a handful of guys in the NFL can make, Earl Bennett returns the Vandy Connection to glory and Julius Peppers was a warrior last night. Big game on the Lakefront on Sunday at the big spaceship.
I don’t want to pick on Iggles fans who have to be pissed this morning but damn… Y’all got three number one corners and couldn’t cover Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, Dane Sanzenbacher, Stonehands Williams and the best PR/most overpaid #1 receiver in the league.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
I think Brady would settle for a receiver that can run routes more than 15 yards downfield. The biggest deep threat NE has is the TEs or Welker running up the seam.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:12 AM
Bears defense looked great last night.

Liked the LaVar Arrington article with his thoughts on Sandusky. Very well done, and a good description of a guy with some real conflicting emotions.
he was just on chicago radio got a little heated as he defended the program, but not the act. it’s a human thing ot a football thing. hosts called him on that part, since he was enabled by the program
November 8th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Hernandez ran deeper routes before he hurt his knee. They also had Price going long when he was active. At this point though nobody can, and it hurts.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
The greatest trick the Cromartie family ever pulled was convincing the NFL that they were good cornerbacks.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:14 AM
Hillis to the Patriots?
November 8th, 2011 at 9:14 AM

The Krupa twins can’t be topped. Joanna’s ads for no fur over in Russia… Cousin Yuri has probably chaffed it raw to those things.

Perhaps this photo will sway your opinion.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:15 AM
He has the best running back in the NFL right now. Pretty good weapon to have.
yes, god forbid he should have nice things, like an OL and decent WRs. let him struggle all his career because of a shitty FO. cutler is the man, the way he keeps play going, his toughness, and you are seeing what he can do with some protection
November 8th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
“It’s a sensitive issue, and just like when I heard about the incident, I’m not going to say anything about it today. Let’s talk about Nebraska…”
November 8th, 2011 at 9:16 AM
Pissed isn’t the right word to describe it…depressed that it’s the same shit over and over again. Soft defense, no true dedication to the run, no true #1 receiver, and a shitty O-line. Pretty much the storybook of Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.

It’s just not worth it IMO to spend that amount of money for live musical performance. There are only a few bands I would hash out decent coin to see.
agreed.
the nice part of living near chicago is that there are a lot of small venues, cheaper prices and yet good bands still play them as they start their career. saw pearl jam at metro, jeff buckley there too, STP, Living Color
November 8th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
Most surprising thing last night was the Soldier Field turf monster making the road trip and sealing the game by tripping up Maclin on 4th down.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
Well, for me, this is one of those shows. This is my first concert in I don’t know how long. I can’t even remember the last big act I saw. I spent $60 on the ticket, $25 on a boss t-shirt and probably $30 in round-trip gas. To me, that’s worth it, as Foo Fighters have been one of my faves since “I’ll Stick Around” floored me in seventh grade.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:17 AM
I bet people will be crawling out of the woodwork for that one. probably would be worth it for people watching alone.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
fingers crossed that CJ2k gets cut, gets motivated, and signs with the pats to proove he deserves a big contract… then the pats cut his ass after the super bowl win.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:18 AM
Isnt it interesting that everyone he’s cut is still out there or is sucking for another team?

samuels is a fool
November 8th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
The Eagles deserved the “L” last night. They came by it honestly.
The play of the Bears’ LBs last night was in stark contrast to what Eagle fans are used to seeing out of their own LBs. Rolle had that fumble recovery for a TD last night, but I can’t really remember the last time an Eagles LB made plays the way Urlacher and Briggs did last night. Maybe in the Trotter and Carlos Emmons days.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
From TBLAD:
The only thing worse than TBL’s speculative Penn state post? TBL failing to see the problem with his speculative Penn state post.
Truth. That was the worst post in the history of this site, worse than Oden dong, worse than Garcia is shaving points, worse than McNair’s killer is still out there. Quite frankly, I can’t believe that whatever legal oversight there is over the editorial content would have allowed that to be published.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:21 AM
makes it impressive he was able to get something out of them, depressing that was the best they could get in terms of players.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:22 AM

November 8th, 2011 at 9:23 AM

November 8th, 2011 at 9:23 AM
That was a disgraceful performance last night. They need to make some deals in the off season and work on that Front 7 and maybe draft another firefighter for the o line.

November 8th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
Also…I can’t understand why Reid doesn’t call Vick’s number more often. Dude should be running for 100 a game. Take advantage of the weapons you have, and don’t force them to fit your own stubborn sense of how the game should be called.
That said, it’s always nice to laugh at Iggles fan at work the morning after an excruciating loss.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
i do see a season ending “injury” popping up, like a hamstring, etc. that’s the only way he gets his money at this point, if i understand correctly.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:25 AM
I completely agree NDub. I was just speaking to spencer’s point about not going to many concerts anymore. I used to go all the time because it was 10-20 bucks for a halfway decent seat.

I’ve been the PR guy and the reporter. I wouldn’t begrude the media to go into attack mode today given that BS press release JoePa (if this is true – Joe you said so the grand jury) and the school’s statement (we stand behind these guys). A smart PR guy would cancel the presser and just bring a few players out there. Total dumb move to do what they are doing today. It is going to go bad.

I have three monitors so I have options.
/my sofa might be broken by the end of the season
November 8th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
I love that movie.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:39 AM
Well the weird part is they had him basically confessing to that one mother. Something must have gone wrong there, maybe that confrontation was inadmissable, I dont know. We have every right to be angry that it could have been stopped there, though.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Holy Shit these are ugly
November 8th, 2011 at 9:40 AM
Yea I immediately felt bad after calling him better. Like a Lion fan trying to call Johnson the best receiver.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:41 AM
entrapment, no?

November 8th, 2011 at 9:42 AM
Puljos and Reyes are gonna look great in those!
November 8th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Ozzie Guillen is going to look great in the dugout in those.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Anyone have an audio link?
November 8th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
Oh for chrissakes. I’m sure it’ll be funny but they could not have picked a worse time to release that than after this past summer.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:43 AM
If Calvin had Kurt Warner throwing him the ball…
November 8th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Theres a Gif for that.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Holy Shit these are ugly
honestly, they are better than that teal garbage.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
I thought the allusion to his disappearance (and the inferred connection) was more troubling
November 8th, 2011 at 9:44 AM
Wait what? Is this our Duffy?
November 8th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
I thought it was the not so subtle allusion that PSU (or maybe even the BCS!) “took care” of the DA because he knew too much.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:45 AM
Anyone have an audio link?
I wonder how many minutes before he mentioned his scientist doctor parents. Probably not before he mentioned Michigan.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:46 AM
Great point.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:48 AM
It was mentioned in his introduction.
“We welcome Ty Duffy to the program, Ty is a contributor the ‘The Big Lead’ and comes from good breeding, Ty glad to have you on.”
November 8th, 2011 at 9:49 AM
I was pretty sure the subtext of that post was “Joe Paterno strangled the D.A.”
November 8th, 2011 at 9:50 AM
The late 70′s Astros uniform agrees with you
November 8th, 2011 at 9:52 AM
I can’t wait for baseball season. There needs to be photos of Cousin Ron in his brand new Marlins Mike Stanton orange jersey for the first post of the year.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
JoePa killed the DA!
You remember back when this blog was getting noticed and after that Will Leitch/Buzz thing that TBL said in an interview to the LA Times that blogs needed be aware of what they posted?
November 8th, 2011 at 9:53 AM
Former reporter, now PR. No way I’m trotting the lamb out for the slaughter. The problem with sending a few players, though, is that you’re going to get questions of them about “the mood in the locker room” or “how Coach Paterno is handling this.” Tough situation.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:54 AM
I bet the NHL is thrilled about this movie.
Frankly, I don’t think the NHL will give a damn.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Duffy sounded extremely nervous during the whole segment and Lavar called him out on it. He also really was not making sense. I believe that Lavar and his co-host hung up or cut Duffy off very early in the interview.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
Will had a nice response. It’s when I stopped lurking here and became a commenter.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
This right here. The first question should be “Why did you not go to the cops immediately after hearing about the abuse?” And when he doesn’t answer, every single question should be identical to the first one. I just read the story from the PA paper with quotes from the mother’s of two victims. Holy shit. I’m beyond enraged. This shit could have stopped 13 years ago and they let it continue. Paterno needs to resign now, not at the end of the year so he can have some bullshit going away party in a bowl game. I don’t care how much good work he did for PSU. All of that pales in comparison to letting this guy ruin the lives of so many people.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:55 AM
This is the second time I’ve heard about Duffy dropping the ball in a radi interview. I believe it was SG or CJ (sorry) who said they heard him and Hernia on an interview. Maybe I’m wrong.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I traded Longo and picks in the next two drafts for Staton, Gallardo and Wainwright. Stanton is gonna be nasty with left field line at the new stadium much lower and only 340 to the corner.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:57 AM
I’ll look into it.

November 8th, 2011 at 9:58 AM

Just read it too, Husker. Everyone read this
November 8th, 2011 at 9:58 AM
To be fair, though, radio is tough stuff if you aren’t used to it. Easy to babble, or just come off as a clueless wretch.
/from experience’d
November 8th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
To be fair, there was a time when the responsible/reckless ratio was waaayyy closer than it had any right to be. At least the reckless stuff isn’t nearly as often anymore.
Also, I’m really enjoying that JoePa pic of him on the main page. It’s like he realized, “Oh god I’m at the Metrodome, I’m going to puke, get me out of here…”
November 8th, 2011 at 9:59 AM
What was funny about the Duffy interview to me is that Duffy is obviously a very intelligent person. I disagree with a lot of his views and think that he tends to be overly idealistic and take a very hardline in many things that he writes but nonetheless he is obviously very talented.
It is funny that a talented smart guy came off sounding poorly on a show which is one of the worst sports talk shows in the DC area. (Which is saying a lot. DC sports talk radio is pretty terrible.) I cringed a few times during the interview because I felt bad for Duffy. His talent as a writer did not translate well yesterday.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
Tough situation.
Well these are the days you earn your paycheck. You just have to prep the players how to handle it, bring a few seniors out there. It can be done. You don’t have any media access then you’ll get it worse. People always piled on Drew Rosenhaus for his T.O. “next question” scene but he was out there taking haymakers for a player. Not every day is a good day.

This is my understanding why Simmons doesn’t do television.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:04 AM
Also because you cant fix ‘nasally, annoying voice’
November 8th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I’d like a cuppa Krupa-Krupa, please!
November 8th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
I did a podcast once and was always trying so hard not to ramble. I had fun doing it though. Very weird to hear yourself talk. Not really a fan of it.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
When your voice is somehow more annoying than Chuck Klosterman’s, that’s an achievement.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
Yea, Young Duffy sounds a little nervous and all over the place there. Wasn’t able to do his fantastic article justice.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:07 AM
radio is when you realize how often you say these words: umm, basically, err, okay then, and others…
November 8th, 2011 at 10:10 AM
A little jarring at first, but it doesn’t take away from his podcasts like other people that don’t have good radio voices. I hardly notice it anymore.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
This is my understanding why Simmons doesn’t do television.
Does he not fill in on PTI anymore?
November 8th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
So true. I heard Duffy on Yahoo radio and he dropped a number of those down. I think the thing to do is make sure you have some notes in front of you. Much like giving a speech, you just need words or phrases to point you in the right direction.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:11 AM
Alex Trebek called this reporter a saucy wench
Someone used “saucy minx” in one of yesterday’s chats to describe Maggie on The Walking Dead. I can only echo what Glenn said, pre-bang: “Hello, farmer’s daughter!”
November 8th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
How would you get better at this?
Would something like Toastmasters help? I did a couple of public speaking classes as an undergrad and one as a professional. Guess I don’t know Duffy well enough to know if he is a confident public speaker when he’s not on the radio.

Could be worse. My user name could be “Train” or “Creed.” Think of what you’d have running through your head then.

Did I drunkenly design the ND helmet and forget? It was clearly the work of someone who hated Lady of the Lake perhaps it was the intern getting revenge from beyond the grave.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Also, my damn Gravatar isn’t working anymore, so I can no longer link myself to the totally-pertinent-to-our-times John Carpenter classic They Live. Occupy Alien Wall Street!

Oh man, I haven’t heard that song in a gazillion years. The video always cracked me up. I remember that Tripping Daisy song that was really popular around that time.

Hey, I saw Foo Fighters last night and I’m pretty sure it was the best show I’ve seen
This is the greatest Foo show ever.
November 8th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
Hosting a radio gig takes repetition. I hosted shows weekly for 4 years and it took til year 3 to be good. Your confidence needs to be through-the-roof. Your heart rate will go up so you have to just stay calm. Good DJ’s make it look easy. A lost craft.

The equivalent of Herman Cain demanding that those pesky reporters stop asking about the harassment allegations and stay on message.

Comcast Philly had a former Eagle on as a guest last night, for the life of me I cant remember his name, but during conversation he brings up that when he used to be on the defense, they would be able to “rape” wide receivers. This was immediately after their segment on Sandusky. They had to come back from commercial break and apologize.

Joe namath is to the Football HOF as Bill Mazeroski is to the baseball HOF
Hey, put a lid on such talk. Lowered standards are my only hope of getting Archie Manning into the HOF.

I watched a forklift back over a ladies leg one time at a company I was working for. Gruesome, her bone was poking out and blood everywhere. Of course the forklift was beeping loudly and the lady literally walked behind it…..kinda like this gate that had been in motion for a minute when the lady walked up to and stood in its path?? Some people…
