Joe Paterno’s Living Room Window Press Conference Or: Penn State Fans Are Delusional [Update: With Video]

Obviously, this Penn State mess is, well, a mess. Tonight an untold number of Penn State students and fans gathered outside embattled head coach Joe Paterno’s (I’m just guessing) state-funded home in Happy Valley. These kids are delusional and disappointing.
Can you really blame them? They grew up watching mighty Penn State and its legendary Hall of Fame head coach. Penn State is their school. Their parents all have “Proud Parents of a Nittany Lion” stickers in the back window of their cars. Now the entire world has turned against their school and their coach. They don’t see a man who at the very least, turned a blind eye to a monster taking advantage of helpless children for untold years. All they see is their coach — a proud man who would rather die coaching games than live watching them.
It is puppy love at its most pathetic. That is why they can do nothing but chant and march is support of a man who will soon be asked to leave their campus. That is why we get idiots like this guy with his smarmy “Occupy McKee St” sign. They are stupid kids who can not grasp what they are doing. So pity them. Pity the fact that they rally in support as the number of victims doubled in a day. They are young and they know not what they do. Though it seems even when you are old enough to know what you do at Penn State, you don’t do the right thing either.

I understand it’s your school and you hope against hope that the allegations against your legendary coach isn’t true. But this makes me so sad. It’s so hard being a sports fan sometimes, when you look around to your fellow “fans”. I love sports, but I hope to never lose my moral compass to the point where I’m doing the same thing as these “supporters” of Joe Pa outside his home.
If you love Penn State, appropriate response is to be shocked and angry. All the facts haven’t come out. I understand that. But until then, just calm down and try to wait for the truth to come out. Don’t rush to the coache’s house humming a seven nation army song. Little kids had their lives ruined, and yet these idiots are worried more about the guy who may or may not have had the power to stop it. Just sad. Really sad.

Can I play devil’s advocate to the public perception of JoePa right now? This language has permeated the conversation recently –
At the very least? Shouldn’t we assume it was the very most that JoePa did? We’re talking about one of the worst crimes a person can commit and we are assuming decent people turned a blind eye on purpose? What would be their motivation for doing so? Penn State is suffering from a lack of leadership which does not equate to a complete lack of morality. The people who knew the very specifics and did not further investigate? They are culpable. Therefore the first question should be – who knew what, exactly? And who did they tell? For me, except for those eye witnesses and those who spoke directly with the eye witnesses, it at least seems plausible that there are many in the PSU athletic dept. who did not know the horrifying details, which can be presumed by the fact they didn’t say anything in the face of such evil. “Did you hear Sandusky is a pederast” is a lot different than “did you hear Sandusky raped some kid in the locker room.”
For the past however many years, the running joke has been Paterno as coach. The same can be said for Paterno as leader. Paterno long ago became a symbol. Firing him or stepping down does not alleviate the problem, nor does it prove Paterno knew anything specific. I think as a symbol, at the very least, Paterno could prove more valuable in the PSU healing/retribution process as he could hanging from a limb above a lynch mob.

“It’s hard for me to tell you how much this means to me. I’ve lived for this place, and I’ve lived for people like you guys and girls, and I’m just so happy to see that you could feel so strongly about us and about your school. The kids that were victims or whatever they want to say, I think we all ought to say a prayer for them. Tough life, when people do certain things to you. Anyway, you’ve been great. Everything’s great, all right.”
No old man, everything’s not great.

Classic. His neighbors must love him more than usual as he lives in a very typical neighborhood. For those not aware, and last I checked, he’s still listed in the phone book. His house phone number is still “klondike 742″.

Nothing more scornful than an media member angry lashing out at someone with a different point of view.
To use what a previous commenter said and continue in the same vein – we’ve joked for 10 years about Paterno actually running the program, yet now – when it may be most convenient for those angry that the 84 year old still stalks the sidelines (or pressbox) – the media and public want to act like the man is as hands on as any coach in the country. Find me another coach that leaves his home – not his office at the complex – to go to practice. You think Lane Kiffin or Saban does that? It’s the equivalent of Bowden taking naps in the later years.
I’m not condoning any of the absolutely horrific bullcrap that went on up there, nor am I exonerating Paterno in any way, just merely pointing out how hypocritical and opportunistic the media can be. Just present me the facts and let me make up my own mind. By throwing an O’Reilly-esque spin factor in there it actually makes me support the nutjobs camping outside the assisted living center.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:18 PM
Didn’t understand a goddamn word he said. He’s the highest paid state employee right?
November 8th, 2011 at 9:27 PM
All that press conference was missing was for Joe to do the discount double-check.
November 8th, 2011 at 9:38 PM
As I watch Joe stroll out towards the cameras with a big grin on his face, I’m not sure he comprehends the severity of this situation.
Also, any PSU students that support him are idiots. Turning a blind eye to anal rape of little boys!! Yay!! We are!! Penn State!!
