Why Did the District Attorney in Pennsylvania Not Pursue a Case Against Jerry Sandusky in 1998?
Of the many questions in the sickening Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case that has shaken Happy Valley, here’s one that will never be answered: Why didn’t former district attorney Ray Gricar prosecute Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky in 1998 when two kids reported he washed them in the shower?
Gricar mysteriously vanished on April 15, 2005. And he has never been found. He was declared legally dead in July, even though nobody has a clue what happened to him.
Gricar disappeared April 15, 2005, after taking a day off work to drive to Lewisburg. His disappearance has been the subject of a lot of speculation.
His laptop hard drive, which was found dumped in the Susquehanna River near where his car was parked in Lewisburg, was too badly damaged by water to be read.
Mysterious enough for you? Wait, it gets more puzzling.
A member of law enforcement who was in the room with Gricar when police presented him with the 1998 allegations against Sandusky said Gricar led the investigation.
He tried to get information by having officers hide in the home of one of the victims as the mother confronted Sandusky.
But that source said he isn’t sure how Gricar came to his final decision not to prosecute the case.
Feel free to speculate as to why Gricar didn’t prosecute the scumbag, even though “Sandusky admitted to showering naked with the victim and admitted it was wrong.” Interestingly, Sandusky retired after the 1999 season. (Form your own conclusions.) Four years after Gricar’s poor decision, Penn State officials neglected to report to police that an eyewitness saw Sandusky allegedly anally-raping a young boy in the showers on the Penn State campus. Good God, TBL.
November 7th, 2011 at 6:22 PM
Who knows why he didn’t prosecute but it certainly seems like he had issues living with the decision.
Just read that Sandusky gave a commencement speech in 2007 at Penn State. They just keep looking worse and worse.

Good God, TBL.
Is it bad that when I saw that part I barely even flinched and muttered to myself “Figures that this sentence would be here…”
November 7th, 2011 at 6:24 PM
What’s Sandusky waiting for? Kill yourself already!
November 7th, 2011 at 6:26 PM
Probably just dropped it.

I think we’re doing this a disservice by assuming that his disappearance is related to this Sandusky mess. Gricar also prosecuted several individuals who were deeply involved with organized crime during his time. I’ve read that his family had a history of depression as well and that his brother had committed suicide near where Gricar disappeared.
The point being that, we shouldn’t speculate. But I guess there’s no blog posts in not speculating.

If it was my kid he’d be dead by now.
November 7th, 2011 at 6:27 PM
Maybe Sandusky and Gricar were in cahoots. Perhaps Gricar faked his own death and escaped to some island in the Caribbean. Sandusky was planning the same but the law caught up with him before he could make his move. Is such a thing even possible?
November 7th, 2011 at 6:28 PM
Uh…Rex?
November 7th, 2011 at 6:30 PM
Word is that Gricar was waxed by McNair’s real killer. Allegedly. (the situation is fluid)
November 7th, 2011 at 6:33 PM
Anybody else friends with Rex on Facebook and know that whole thing? I can’t be the only one.

Look at Mr Fancypants reading more than 1 article. Thats why youre just a commenter and not an author, details are for suckers, just type anal-rape and call it a day.
Having been prosecuted by this Gricar jackass I can ensure you he was an ass hole.

I’m hearing Bernard Berrian snitched on Sandusky.

I could have sworn that Billy Buck said something _very_ important just now.
November 7th, 2011 at 6:58 PM
Because he didn’t have enough to successfully prosecute the case (“If you come at the king, you best not miss.”), most likely because he was personally taking the time to prosecute Coop for Arts Fest vandalism or some such crime against Centre County.
And I’m not his brother, but thanks for that Billy Buck.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:04 PM
Ahhh, I was incorrect, my bad. Now I feel as though saying that in the comment section was probably not the best way to mention it anyways.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:14 PM
A fair amount of you know who I am, so I’ll just say this… Gricar was not a politician. He was a prosecutor. He was not beholden to the university, mostly because he didn’t give a shit. Back in the mid-90′s, Paterno and Bobby Engram left a very bad taste in his mouth after Engram’s arrest on theft charges, resulting in the nickname of Bobby Ingrate. I was aware of the Sandusky case back then, as were a good number of people in State College. Any failures come down to oversight of, and those interacting with, Sandusky. There was not a whiff of anything re: Sandusky after that, at least in terms of law enforcement.
A successful case could not be assembled, and I’ve been reassured this by a variety of prosecutors in the last 24 hours, so I have no issue with it.
As for “Mysterious enough for you? Wait, it gets more puzzling.”…you have no fucking idea how puzzling it is.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:21 PM
Thanks for that, Rex. I (among others, I’m guessing) didn’t feel like we should say anything in a public forum. Now we wait to see what Jason has to say.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:25 PM
Any buzz out there in PA? ESPN radio mentioned a possible presser w/ Joe Pa tomorrow? I can’t imagine they’ll let him take questions as I think it’ll be a sad ending to his career, him not grasping at anything.
If they let him take questions it’ll be Waterloo on his career. I don’t think they have any idea what kind of a hornet’s nest he’d be going into.
They kind of have to, but that’ll ge Game/Set/Match in the court of public opinoin, no? An old man flailing at the truth?
November 7th, 2011 at 7:30 PM
For the various liabilities to himself and the school, it can’t be any more than a brief sentence. Maybe JayPa will get up and start pontificating about how great his Dad is and how the University is still above it all.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:30 PM
I went full-retard mentioning anything, sorry guys.

Something profoundly important seems to have occurred on here but I haven’t a clue what it is.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:37 PM
I’m confused, Rex Kramer is Ki-Jana carter?
November 7th, 2011 at 7:38 PM
Yes you did, now I’m all curious. At least my internet sleuthing led me to MLJ, which appropriately has pedobear in its banner.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:42 PM
No worries, Billy. Hell, I’m not even really bothered by JMac’s post here as it’s in-line with other equally ignorant posts he’s thrown at the wall to see what sticks. “Gricar’s poor decision” is just another example of that, but this time he happens to have someone who has a bit more knowledge than the typical commenter. I guess I just better be sure to lock down my Facebook pics before I go to bed.
ms621, I’m more than a bit intertwined with the Gricar disappearance case. Doesn’t really bother me to know who I am, it just cuts down on the crazy my phone and inbox see on a steady basis. There’s currently an hour long show that does a good job covering it on Discovery Investigates called “A Family Cursed”.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:45 PM
I think Billy Buck humanized Rex in a comment. The comment was deleted, and then Rex basically wrote a better post than the actual post.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:49 PM
Understood Rex. I had read about gricar’s disappearance in the past so it interesting/odd to see it get brought up in association with this. I’ll respect your privacy and not go persuing Facebook looking for identities. your candor is appreciated.

Basically this.
November 7th, 2011 at 7:57 PM
What is the Board of Trustees’ position on Joe Pa? I.E. Is it loaded in his favor that they might not demand a session to possibly suspend the President and Joe Pa? How quickly can a college Board come together for an emergency meeting? 48 hours? Any groundswell on this?
November 7th, 2011 at 7:58 PM
You and me both. His disappearance was the biggest crime(?)-related news in the history of that region. It is now a distant second place, yet he is tied to it 6.5 years after he went missing, and just a few months after he was declared dead. We like to keep it surreal…

Dear TBL
A court of law is not the same as TheBigLead. You not only need evidence, but it has to hold up under these rules that the court and legislative bodies have created over the years. The prosecutor made his decisions based on what he had…you cannot prosecute someone for simply because you think he’s a sick fuck, and if that’s what you want move to Iran…might be more up your alley
But for the 12,000th time ignore those constraints and get those pageviews! It’s like candy right now…right?

Well said, Trey.
Also, I can’t believe I wasn’t asked to do a Photoshop for this.

who was the person who threw the watergate evidence into the potomac?
November 7th, 2011 at 8:16 PM
that’s unfortunate the story didn’t get out. who knows how many children’s lives were ruined by this sick bastard. he went on rape little kids for what, another decade?
November 7th, 2011 at 8:17 PM
There is speculating then connecting some guy’s disappearance to a case he dropped in the late 90s, when for all we know, there was no case…
But go ahead.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:19 PM
best part about this?
this story – the disappearance, the non-prosecute in 1998 – went viral today due to the newspaper article. it was all over the TV and the radio. Without the newspaper article, who knows about this? the people of Happy Valley?
but yes, by all means, flip out about this blog post.
carry on.

I think speculation is okay but this topic requires a little more gravitas than typical site fare.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:27 PM
TBL, if I didn’t respect what you’ve accomplished with this site then I wouldn’t bother to come here. But based on what Trey and more importantly Rex are saying, I think you’re out of bounds on this one. Dont keep digging a hole out of stubbornness.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:29 PM
You have got to be fucking kidding me. Yes, thank you for the publicity re: his disappearance. This is another prime example of “If it didn’t happen on The CW, did it really happen?”.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:29 PM
Remember when we all thought the Duke Lacrosse players were guilty?
Not saying it’s the same, but we should wait for the evidence and whatever else the prosecution/defense will show.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:33 PM
I saw the attorney general solicited more people to come forward today.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:37 PM
Ironically, AttGen Corbett wouldn’t touch the Gricar case with a ten foot pole. He picks his spots when he knows he has a win.
November 7th, 2011 at 8:52 PM
Ray Gricar was a friend of mine so I can attest that Rex has no idea what he’s talking about. Rex has never met Ray Gricar and he certainly didn’t kill him and toss his body in the East River back in 2005.

If people in the DA’s office and anywhere else knew of the Sandusky story in 1998 and it didn’t get out they should be ashamed of themselves for letting a predator go another decade and ruin probably 100′s of kids lives.
When a man admits to showering with little boys and NOTHING happens to him what does that say?
