Joe Paterno Should Resign as Penn State’s Football Head Coach
Joe Paterno should resign. He should resign because, in the leadership vacuum that is Penn State University, he’s the only person with the gravitas to fire himself. Facing the most important trial of his professional career, the man supposed to embody courage, dignity and nobility showed weakness. His irresponsibility may have led to the harm of innocent children. His failure, for someone who places himself in a position of authority, is inexcusable.
Penn State knew and they did nothing. Police investigated an incident in 1998. Jerry Sandusky, then the defensive coordinator, allegedly showered with a young boy in the Penn State football facilities. In a conversation overheard by police, Sandusky responded “I don’t know…maybe” when asked if he touched the boy’s genitals. He told the mother of the boy “I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won’t get it from you. I wish I were dead.” No charges were filed. Sandusky retired unexpectedly in 1999.
In 2000, a Penn State janitor reported seeing Sandusky forcibly performing oral sex on a 10-year-old boy in the showers. In 2002, a Penn State graduate assistant, by his own account, witnessed a naked Jerry Sandusky holding a 10-year-old boy prone and penetrating him in the anus. The GA – identified by the New York Times as a former PSU QB – fled, called his father and then called Joe Paterno.
Paterno recounts the incident in the following statement.
“As my grand jury testimony stated, I was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in the shower of our locker room facility. It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the Grand Jury report. Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky. As Coach Sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at that time, I referred the matter to university administrators.
He referred the matter to university administrators. This was not notifying his bosses. Bosses are more experienced than you. Bosses make more money than you. Bosses hold the power of employment or unemployment over you. Joe Paterno does not have bosses. He is not an authority figure in the Penn State athletics department. He is the authority figure.
Legally, Paterno notified someone as required. Morally, Paterno abdicated responsibility entirely. It’s unclear what specifically he thought “something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky” meant. It’s unclear why, when told “something inappropriate” happened in a shower, between an adult man and an underage child in front of a distraught witness, he made no effort to alert proper authorities and made no effort to follow up on the incident and that authorities were alerted. There’s no evidence he even confronted Sandusky about it. He washed his hands and walked away.
Paterno had to address the unthinkable about a friend, career-long coworker and confidant. He had to accept his legacy and the program he devoted his adult life to build would be tainted. The right choice is seldom an easy one. Joe Paterno took the coward’s way out.
Consciously or unconsciously, Paterno set the tone. An act as heinous as the alleged rape of a defenseless child assumed euphemisms such as “something inappropriate” and later “horsing around.” The incident not acknowledged directly was not handled directly. No authorities were alerted. No one sought out the alleged victim. The only tangible punishment meted out, for a child allegedly getting raped in the locker room, was Sandusky having his keys taken away.
Penn State and, specifically, Paterno’s dereliction of duty are inconceivable. The only hope is that it was impaired decision-making or a breathtaking moment of thoughtlessness, rather than unfathomable depth of callousness and moral decay. If these allegations against Sandusky are true, Penn State’s administrators and, indirectly, Paterno let a purported pederast continue to prey on innocent children, children they knew he would have steady access to through his charity. There’s no justification for that. It would be inhuman.
Penn State stresses “Success with Honor.” The program has undoubtedly had its success, but there’s no honor here and there’s none as long as this regime persists. The moral implications of this story surpass anything under the NCAA’s jurisdiction. This is a tragic absence of leadership and a culture gone corrupt. Paterno’s legacy, his 400 wins and his program may be ground to dust by this scandal. That’s a tear drop in the ocean of pain the program’s negligence may have inflicted on just one child.
Joe Paterno abdicated responsibility before. Under the public spotlight, he’s in no position to do so again. He must resign, if not immediately at the end of the season. Penn State needs a clean slate, entirely new leadership and, judging from its actions through this mess, a vast recalibration of its priorities as an academic institution.

I think it’s entirely possible that JoePa didn’t do more than he did simply because he, even then, lacked the mental capacity to understand what he was being told.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:05 AM
It’s. Been. Real.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:13 AM
Totally agree.

Sounds like a guy who wanted to be arrested. This story is a disaster.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Who at Penn State is going to call on the shots on firings if any will take place? If you care about accountability, you have to systematically determine who was in a position to do anything about this and determine if their action/inaction makes them worthy of keeping their job, right?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:15 AM
I didn’t have the best of Breeder’s Cup overall…but was powered in on Drosselmeyer, and made up every dime I had lost over the weekend, with plenty to spare.
$31.20!

Sandusky always around boys. At the school, on trips, always.
Then, he’s supposedly blowing a kid in the showers.
Anally-raping one in the shower.
And Joe took no action but to tell the AD.
It’s been real, indeed.

Followed by this.
Unbelievable. Penn State higher-ups (including joepa) knew about 1998. They knew about 2002. And they allowed that camp to take place in 2009.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:17 AM
If I’m on the Board of Trustees for Penn State, anyone who has been a part of the story must go… now. This is massively damaging to the school, only a part of which is the football program.
If done correctly, the BOT clean the entire place immediately and without remorse.
/I feel like I need a shower or 10
November 7th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
look, i’m not saying Paterno is free and clear on this, but you’d think even the Graduate Assistant would have called the authorities, too… not his father, then Paterno. if he saw what he said he saw, you call the cops first.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Good job pervert state univ. your undying loyalty to these old codgers just got a bunch of kids jacked up. well done. I guess the layers of insulation on the matter have to be in the dozens of people who looked away.
sunshine laws should let some good investigators get through your email and texts and let us know how many of you looked away.
sick sick sick sick sick.
/p.s. well written.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
And then they should all step down as well. Tom Corbett should immediately demand the resignation of the BOT, the university president and Paterno.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:19 AM
Excellent.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
if the President has any balls, he should sit Joe down and tell Joe, nicely: You need to resign.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:20 AM
which is cowardly. I don’t think JoePa is a bad dude, and this ruins a lot of what he has done in his time at the school, but he made a terrible choice to not do anything and needs to do what is right and suffer immediate termination now that this has all gone public.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Once again, the facade of football coaches as honorable leaders gets shredded. If it had been one of JoePa’s grandkids, I am sure he wouldn’t have been as cautious, regardless of how old and feeble he is.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Oh and great read Duffy. Very well said on all parts.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:21 AM
Someone find this guy and punch him in the fucking mouth really hard…what a dumbfuck
November 7th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
Don’t forget, there are former PSU players who played under Sandusky on the BOT, and he has been there since the original incident in ’98.
I’m not saying Suhey knew anything, but this may go beyond Curley/Spanier.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
When Duffy is on he is brillaint. Great post.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:22 AM
The President is probably just as culpable in this matter as JoePa. Spanier lacks the moral authority to ask ANYTHING of Paterno.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I actually find McQueary’s role the most mind boggling. He was not just a kid when he saw this, he was a 28 year old man. He told police that he saw and identified a grown man fucking a ten year old boy. Not any of these euphemisms, like ‘sexual assault’ or ‘indecent touching’ or any of that crap, it was detailed in the report that Mike McQueary SAW with his own two eyes, Jerry Sandusky fucking this poor kid so hard that he could fucking hear it on the other side of the shower.
I don’t doubt that McQueary was terrified, and I don’t doubt that he was sat down with Paterno and Spanier and Curley, and told “If you go to the police the following things will happen a) you will singlehandedly destroy Penn State football, b) no one will believe you, c) your coaching career will be over, forever, d) if you’re smart, and let us deal with this, it will be taken care of and you’ll have nothing to worry about.
I know there are young guys here who have big jobs in finance and law, where their bosses are powerful people that could wreck their careers with the stroke of a pen. But how do you keep working in the same office where you saw your bosses help a pedophile get away with it? Why is he still there, the QB coach no doubt?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
I agree, but you have to go beyond that, right? I’m going to go ahead and assume that based on how long this went on for and the number of witnesses/victims/reports during that time, there were many people who were aware of at the very least “rumors” about this guy and possibly more.
Drawing the line based on what people knew is not going to be easy, and I’m not sure how you’d even do it fairly. But I wouldn’t stop at JoePa.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Where was the local uproar? How didn’t this escalate? Is Child perversion a lookaway deal in this area.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Nice job Duffy.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:24 AM

This.
Clean house top-to-bottom.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
This is beyond awful.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:24 AM
Outside of State College it would remind you a lot of Deliverance. As would most of central PA.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
This. Corbett needs to take the lead on this…start with Spanier, and the deal with the BOT.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:26 AM
This is going to be like when all the Tiger Woods chicks came out. For every child that was violated, there are plenty more that lived in silence and are only going to come forward now.
If Penn State thinks the whole story is out, NO WAY. There are have been some things like this in Canada Junior Hockey and the abused keep coming forward as the story propels itself.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:26 AM

Even in Central PA, child molestation is not an acceptable practice.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
Here’s how you deal with this: You tell JoePa that he is going to quit today or you suspend the football program indefinitely. Then you either get a resignation, or fire him with cause.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:27 AM
This is going to be like when all the Tiger Woods chicks came out. For every child that was violated, there are plenty more that lived in silence and are only going to come forward now.
This. Sadly, I’m sure there are young adults right now thinking of whether they should come forward or not. It’s pathetic, atleast in prison these guys are the lowest of the low.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
Yup, Corbett was the state DA when this investigation first started, as the governor of the commonwealth and the man who signs the bills that give Penn State their funding, he should immediately say all state funds are cut off until everyone is gone.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:28 AM
It would be the right decision and a smart one considering the PR mess they are in. And who in their right mind would actually argue against this decision? It would be very few considering what took place and for how long.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
I don’t think JoePa deserves the dignity of being allowed to resign. He should be fired immediately along with anyone else at the university who had knowledge of this situation and didn’t report it to the police.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Well done, completely concur. They gotta nuke the program.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:29 AM
Penn State allowed this guy to have an OVERNIGHT football camp using their name IN 2009. 2009!!!
November 7th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
The almighty dollar isn’t gonna let suspension of the program..but JoePa should resign today
November 7th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
I don’t know what will happen. But everyone in a position of immediate authority has a conflict of interest between doing what is right and covering their own ass that is pretty typical in a large organization.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:30 AM
i am furious. this is a such sick mess. cant imagine if that happened to my kids.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
Speechless.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
I certainly don’t support the idea, but John Saraceno (USAToday, PSU alum) was on Pittsburgh radio this morning, and said that regardless of how bad this looks, there are still huge boosters with incredibly deep pockets who are loyal to Paterno to the end. Firing him for whatever reason would piss the $$$people off, and PSU would lose millions in an instant.
Don’t agree with it, just relaying his thoughts.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:31 AM
McQueary is a cowardly bitch and Joe Paterno is a morale failure, everyone involved should be introduced to Chris Partlow.
How in the fuck is this guys children’s charity still running after more than a decade of pedophilia?
Good call on the euphemism Duffy it’s not assault, abuse, harassment either it’s child rape.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
I don’t think JoePa deserves the dignity of being allowed to resign.
winner winner.
this is so obvious in looking at it.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:32 AM
i am furious. this is a such sick mess. cant imagine if that happened to my kids.
do you guys ever watch or read the news? this type of shit, and worse, happens on a regular basis both domestically and internationally.
not sure why everyone is acting like someone committed a breaking-edge crime.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:33 AM
same here, i think those booster with deep pockets do have some sort of moral center. even if it’s as shallow as the PSU administration’s moral center, they can still write a check and turn a blind eye to JoePa getting forced out over this.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
You have to wonder…if he was walked in on twice, just how many other incidents were there? I agree that there are probably a LOT more out there.
I was not online this weekend so I missed the story. A lot has been said about McQueary, but I guess I missed what happened when the Janitor caught him. To whom did he report the incident?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:34 AM
As an OSU alumni and Pittsburgh native (I tend to side with Pitt in the Pitt/PSU decision that most people from this area have to make) a major scandal at PSU would normally be something that I would love to see. But this goes beyond that. Everyone compliant in this has to go. JoePa, McQuerey, the President, anyone who knew and didn’t tell the proper authorities has to be fired and if it applies, charges need to be brought against them.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:35 AM
I’m going to assume everything worth saying about this has been said in the previous 50 or so comments. I think JoePa ends up retiring, but it won’t be because the university president made him do so.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Why would boosters, who I believe we should all understand a primarily motivated by doing whatever they can to support a successful PSU football program, at this point stand behind JoePa?
There was already plenty of evidence he was at the very least no longer helpful to the program. Keeping him around is in the program’s best interest?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Because this is a major educational institution. This is a major breaking-edge crime because of the people involved, the circumstances, the known cover-up, and the potential long-term damage that it could do.
The Catholic Church stuff is a million times worse, but the power of the Catholics will never let the public see or hear the complete set of atrocities.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
There’s a time to do what’s right. This is one of those times. Money be damned. Money follows the correct decisions ultimately. Chase the dollar and die.
This is a morality play on the highest level.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:37 AM
It’s the same.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Yep.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:38 AM
Yup
November 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
The Catholic Church stuff is a million times worse,
It’s worse in the sense that it happened way more frequently — but the crime itself is almost identical.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
JoePa needs to get shitcanned.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
As far university athletic scandals, I think I can safely say that”
Alumni paying players under the table with the administration’s knowledge >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> assistant coach allegedly molesting children while the university and rest of the coaching staff look the other way.

/pets 10-year old on the head like a lap dog
November 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
The Catholic Church stuff is a million times worse,
It’s the same.
It’s not the same. If hundreds of university administrators and coaches were found to be raping boys, then it might be closer to being the same. The fact that the catholic church doesn’t have more of a black eye after 1000′s of priest turned out to be pedophiles is pretty disheartening.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:39 AM
Covering up for one person is not equivalent to covering up for 1000s. But there’s no reason to have this debate…they are both atrocities.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Its ok guys, let your hate out. I already heard on the radio this morning someone blame Catholics because “Penn State is like Notre Dame for Italians”
November 7th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Agreed, but instead of one person at the forefront, it’s many (and many more than anyone would want to admit). So, a million was too over the top, but still worse in sheer volume…
November 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
easy there…plenty of midwestern italian kids have gone to schools other than penn state.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
But there’s no reason to have this debate
Agree — imagine if one of these victims comes forward?!
November 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Really? That stink is never, ever going away.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:41 AM
More about the school than the program for boosters. Penn State was basically a juco before he started coaching there. A land-granted Boise State of yesteryear.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Really? That stink is never, ever going away.
It still rakes in billions of dollars (tax free!) annually from the masses, doesn’t it?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Resign? JoePa has the school over a barrel.
JoePa will be a witness for the prosecution against two of his superiors. If the school remotely tries to push him out (his contract expires in January or February), JoePa — if not the feds — will go after the school for witness tampering. If the school tries to run JoePa, it will be like Richard Nixon firing Archibald Cox, essentially proving there’s a coverup at the highest reaches of the school.
Let’s not take our eyes off the target. The real villians here are Sandusky — who should have his nuts cut off — and Curley/Schultz.
Schultz should be thrown in jail for quashing this with campus police.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Brian Kelly didn’t get fired for putting that student in danger last year. If Joe Paterno doesn’t get forced out because of this, then I don’t think anyone can ever pretend to argue that college athletics builds character. Duffy is on point in this one. This is as easy a call as there ever has been. Everyone must go.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:42 AM
I agree with the sentiment but that sounds like a Creed lyric.
Otherwise, good blog Duffy.

Agreed, but the odor lessens over time. This is the same Church that used to allow and in some cases insist the people be burned at the stake for witchcraft. Time makes people forget things.

I was not online this weekend so I missed the story. A lot has been said about McQueary, but I guess I missed what happened when the Janitor caught him. To whom did he report the incident?
No one. Well, other than the other janitors and his supervisor. According to the indictment, one guy saw it, was shaken up, another witnessed someone in the shower but not who, then waited out in the hall and saw Sandusky walk out with a kid to the parking lot.
The supervisor working that night, after they talked about it, basically told this guy who had just started, your job, dude, you can decide whether it’s worth reporting. Gutless bastards at all levels.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:44 AM

November 7th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Penn State needs to suffer from top to bottom, and I don’t care what your standing in football or society is, if someone was/is involved, they should be torn to the ground. The lives of countless kids is infinantley more importantant than football programs or university donors.
Death penalty for the school if it runs as deep as I think it may, and the person who suggested Corbett cut all state funding until the campus is cleansed is spot on.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:46 AM
Yeah… so did a lot of people back then.

If you are Penn State recruit how do you feel about showering after practice?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:47 AM

Pedophilia isn’t an NCAA violation. Doubt they get any sort of sanctions. Thank goodness they didn’t serve toasted bagels before practice though… that’s grounds for revocation of 10 scholarships!
November 7th, 2011 at 10:47 AM
So true.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Does it strike anyone else as off that the grad assitant is now an assitant coach on the staff? I think there was a little of “shut up and we’ll hook you up with a job,” type of stuff going on at PSU. This is the first I had heard that the grad assistant had seen anal rape, this is the worst thing a head coach has ever done. Letting a pederast keep his access to his victims. In 1998 it was victim #2, now there are 8, and those are the ones we know about. Paterno should not only be booted he should be beaten by the victims.

interesting take.
the school can’t fire him if he did what was required of him in these cases, and they can’t ask him to resign if he did what was required of him and they didn’t do anything about it.
whether he decides to resign on his own accord is up to him i guess.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:50 AM
CJ, it is probably comforting to you that based on many of his opinions almost no one would want to live in ATL’s perfect world.

CJ, it is probably comforting to you that based on many of his opinions almost no one would want to live in ATL’s perfect world.
What opinions are those? That organized religion is a sham and that all women are perfect 10′s? I know plenty of people that would love to live in that world.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Pedophilia isn’t an NCAA violation. Doubt they get any sort of sanctions.
If this was found to be a coverup across the university’s administration, I have to believe that the NCAA would consider doing something. Whether it’s an actual NCAA violation or not, I think the NCAA expects it’s member institutions to uphold a standard of good conduct and ethics.

I don’t even know how to respond to this statement. But I do want to ask, how do you feel about Islam?
November 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
I am going to State College for my sister’s 35th bday party on Sat and she works @ PSU, I’m sure I’ll hear all kinds of rumors. Though she did tell me early in the summer that high ups in PSU knew about Sandusky, so there could be truth to them.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:53 AM
Essentially in you give money to the Catholic Church you are giving money to pedophiles defense fund
I don’t know who authored this massive piece of reductionist thinking, but that is ridiculous.

November 7th, 2011 at 10:54 AM
This is about the sickest, lowest crime that we can accept exists in our world. Sandusky’s crimes will taint PSU and their program for a long time. The best thing to do is to clean house — maybe at season’s end, maybe now — but they have to. Anything less than a bunch of heads rolling sends the signal that they’re trying to look away again and the public won’t let them.
Side question: What does the Big Ten/NCAA do in this instance? Do they let PSU handle this matter at all? Or do they get involved? I’m sure they’d rather just run far away from this but if it looks like PSU will not do anything serious should they get involved?

November 7th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
I agree with you in theory…but in reality, there’s little to nothing the NCAA can do here…in fact, I think they likely won’t to steer as clear as possible from this mess.
November 7th, 2011 at 10:57 AM
Look, I’m not going to argue that anyone should lose sleep when they make their Sunday offering.
But to the extent that some of that money reaches the Vatican, and there is plenty of evidence to support the Vatican used resources at various points to cover up the scandal, well… you see the connection. Even if you’re local church/diocese has never had a problem.

Lot of uninformed thoughts on Catholocism up in here. I know the topic du jour let’s this become a anti-catholic parade but take that elsewhere. It takes away from the real story here and rather than cloud this thread with some rebuttals that will just lead to more arguing on religion – not the PSU story.
I’m certain there are a # of catholics in this queue and while there were obvsiously some aforementioned rape events, there’s no reason to continually pile on a faith a lot of people take seriously. Not everybody clings to each faith’s tenet in absolutist terms but to disrepect another person’s faith and cheap shot it is unbecoming. I’m sorry of something in my faith offended you but at least have some decency. I dont force it here but don’t be a clown about it either.

But your opinions border on the realm of retardation, so be ready to have them shit on by others. Your failure to see the good that some organizations can accomplish sounds like a you problem.
*full disclosure, I do not participate in organized religion.

By ‘no’ do you mean literally?
Look despite differences I feel sorry for Penn State fans, players, alumni booster and Catholics for these stomach punches. But it’s now your morale responsibility to call for heads to roll and if no one is punished it’s your responsibility to walk away. You cannot support any entity that is apathetic and capitulates to the rape of children.

You can shit on them all they, that’s fine. I agree, there is a lot of good/charity that comes from organized religion. My parents are very religious… they help the poor immensely, and I go down homeless shelters to volunteer with them a lot. But the part where they go worship some God every Sunday based on 1000 year old stories I find bat-shit crazy. Organized religion just further enforces the “I’m different/better than you because I believe in this happens when I die and you dont… etc.” My overall point was that in a perfect world, I wish that good and charity didn’t have to be based on the supposed teachings of men wearing sandals thousands of years ago, and instead were based on common sense/respect for fellow mankind.

November 7th, 2011 at 11:14 AM
Sad story overall.
Porn isn’t the root cause. Porn is just a vehicle for letting an addiction carry on. There are deeper emotional and mental issues involved in a situation like this. As a recovering addict and someone who got in trouble on the internet, I didn’t even want to comment in these threads but I feel it’s necessary to just add my two cents on the story. The guy has some serious mental issues and took no responsibility/accountability for those problems and continued to act on his desires and fantasies. He abused a position of power and had no one who would step up to him in opposition. The guy should be locked up in jail and needs to get long-term intense counseling. Counseling only helps so much. A person needs to make the effort to change certain behaviors. This goes for any type of addiction.

to be fair, he has a point…jefferson and franklin, two of the architects of our governmental system were strident atheists who did everything they could to keep religion out of our political process and yet it’s found its way in regardless.
Jefferson and Franklin were deists, not atheists. They believe in a higher power, but not necessarily the Christian God that was common.
And the separation of Church and State, which is a concept not actually stated explicitly anywhere in the Constitution, emerged from the desire to prevent the religious strife that existed in Britain for the previous 200 years, where for periods of time you could not even enlist in the military or sit for Parliament unless you were a member of the Church of England.
There were actually churches recognized by the individual states up until the 1820s. Connecticut, for example, did not end it’s financial support and recognition of it’s state Episcopelean Church until 1819 and did so as much for budgetary reasons as it did anything else.

Same as nationalism (Germany 1930s) or political idealism (Russia 1920s) or classism (France 1790s) or racism (USA 1700s). Anything that forms a ideology will be used by some to enact horrific acts on others.
We as a species are quick to use anything to gain the upper hand on others while excusing our behavior.

Ha. No, you should respect them both. They wanted religion to not be associated with the federal government because they were worried that it centralize religious dogma such as had happened in Britain. But individually, neither of them gave much thought to religion, especially in their later years. I’m just saying I wouldn’t be surprised if Sandusky someday admits (in perhaps a 60 minutes interview 10 years from now) that he started out by looking at Hustler magazines when he was 10 years old – and he never was able get control of that addiction. Over time it escalated and eventually got way out of control to the point where he just decided to give up and let his emotions/feelings control his actions.

Same as nationalism (Germany 1930s)
One could argue there was a religious bent here, no just nationalism.
Not really. The Nazis didn’t like the organized religions — felt they were too influenced by the Jews. That’s why they were so into ancient shit and going back to prehistoric times.
Now what we can say is that they co-opted a lot of the pageantry and the show in order to highlight their power.

Yes this right here. Hitler was technically a Christian, but once he found out that the German Lutheran and Catholic Churches were not going to allow themselves to become propaganda organs of the State, he shunned them both and attempted to create his own pseudo-Christian, German-centric religion. It never really caught on though.

Around the time that DVDs started to became more widespread than VHS, I hoped that Hollywood would only allow good movies to move to the new format. Then, when I was about 17, and saw numerous Jean Claude Van Damme movies in the DVD aisle at Best Buy, I knew this hope was a forlorn one.

Why is a personal question that no one can really voice? It’s akin to answering “why did you fall in love with your spouse?” I mean, you can describe attributes, but at the end of the day, it’s unanswerable. It’s a choice you make.

Huh? It was joke… dinos are one of a hundred things I take issue with that were in or weren’t in the bible. The ENTIRE EARTH being flooded out and some old guy gathering 2 of every animal being another.
There are many who take the Bible literally. But there are many more who see it as a metaphor. And there are still others who see a commonality in the stories and parables of the various religious traditions and try to find a scientific answer.
I read a study recently that is looking for evidence of settlements on the floor of the Black Sea. The speculation is that the Bosoporous Strait used to be dry and the Black Sea didn’t exist, and it was instead populated by many settlements. Something geological, a large earthquake perhaps, caused the Bosporous to break open and the Mediterranean to flood into what is now the Black Sea. It’s a very interesting theory and serious academics are studying it. But if it were ever proven to be the case, there would suddenly be more understanding of how certain things were recorded in the Bible.
November 7th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
Why, is a personal relationship with God……If you consider rebelling against mommy and daddy making you go to church and help out people, “thinking for yourself”, thats on you. But just as you labelled organized religion, I’d characterize your reasoning as stupid.
November 7th, 2011 at 11:51 AM
You really can. Only people who are trying to defend their own smug, superiority complex argue the way you do. I don’t know about “little boy issues”, but you clearly have both a problem with the religion and the people who practice it. The first part is fine, the second part is stupid.

Yep. That’s the point of this. Everyone get on JoePa and make him the story. Forget about the old dude blowing at-risk children. I’d rather have had this article be “Jerry Sandusky should get the death penalty” than the first of 100 “Fire JoePa” columns. Congrats TyDuffy… your WPM gives you moral superiority.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
Sandusky is already getting his, the point of this is to find everyone culpable for Sandusky continuing access to rape children (2009 sleepover camp at PSU?!?). If anyone aware at PSU was in any way moral Sandusky would have been in jail years ago and for their failings and they should be punished as well.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:55 PM
Fact finding first. Punishment second.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Facts:
Paterno was aware of the assault at least in 2002
Sandusky was having a sleep away camp as PSU with children as late as 2009.
That’s 7 years of a rapist working with kids at PSU in which Paterno did nothing. Fuck that guy. I really can’t see where you’re going with this WWOS.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:07 PM
I dont know what exactly JoePa was aware of or thought, but I really find it hard to believe he knew exactly what was going on. I believe what he said in his statement and I don’t see any way he would have knowingly been an enabler in this situation. I’m not saying give anyone a pass, but if you are saying he knew and enabled Sandusky, the conversation should be whether or not he should be in jail, not resign.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:08 PM
I’m not really going anywhere, but there’s a lot of shit coming down on JoePa, without knowing exactly what he was told, or what he thought.
I just can’t believe if he knew exactly what was going on, he would have done nothing.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
This presser is pretty damning… of the graduate assistant, of Paterno, of everyone.
Wonder who the graduate asst is, he should resign with Paterno (once I hear the details I’m sure I’ll agree with Paterno going, but I don’t think the first day of anything is a good time to call for remifications…)
November 7th, 2011 at 1:19 PM
Once JoePa was told by the GA about the shower incident, his moral obligation was to get in his car and drive that GA to the police station so that the story could be told and the proper investigation could be done. Anything short of that was JoePa covering his old wrinkled ass. There had already been an accusation / investigation in 1998 and you can’t tell me he wasn’t aware of that. I hope he and everyone involved rots in hell.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:23 PM
If Paterno was told in full enough detail to reasonably surmise the severity of the situation, I truly hope he gets the full brutality of what is about to happen to him in the next 48 hours. Conversely, I hope that he truly isn’t an old man who never was fully aware of the situation and is being blindsided by accusations of heinous immorality on his part.

I only wish that you expect the same from you politicians as you do from this man. If the facts come out that the ONLY knowledge Joepa had of this conduct was from a graduate assistant on an ex employee Than I’m not sure that any further action by Joepa should be needed. In Fact any further action by him could have led to liability on his part ie defamation. Its Ok to lie cheat and steal as long as your a politician but hang the Coach for not being “moral enough”. Really?

pmn1 is partially right about this one. Joepa didn’t understand what oral sex was so he can’t be held responsible for not reporting it.
