Houston Nutt Likely Out as Ole Miss Head Coach
Some days it is great to be a reporter. Neal McCready, the individual targeted by Houston Nutt during this inane rant, is reporting that Nutt has been fired as Ole Miss head coach, effective at the end of the season. A press conference has been called for 3:00 ET, with the school’s chancellor, AD and Nutt in attendance.
Nutt started hot, leading Mississippi to consecutive Top 20 seasons and Cotton Bowl wins. However, he has won just one of 13 SEC games the past two seasons. In year four of the project, they were beaten badly by both Vanderbilt and Kentucky. That’s unacceptable at any program. It’s particularly bad at Ole Miss. Perhaps, signing some kids who had a chance to be eligible to play for the university might have helped.
The Rebels are losing on the field and that’s feeding losses off the field. Defeats have coincided with Mississippi State emerging under Dan Mullen and launching a direct challenge with the Our State campaign to become the top Mississippi program (bigger deal inside the state) in the SEC. Ole Miss AD Pete Boone undoubtedly was feeling the heat. The longer Nutt lasted the greater the odds Pete Boone would be departing with him.

Tomorrow’s Headline: “Ole Miss Busts a Nutt.”
November 7th, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Can we talk about how Nebraska lost to jNWU in Lincoln yet?
November 7th, 2011 at 12:11 PM
I prefer “Ole Miss Wipes Nutt Off Its Face.”
Ole Miss needs someone to go in there and find a way to keep their in-state talent in state — like Saban did at LSU when he arrived.

Nutt will resurface at a division 1 school in a year or two.

I will always remember when Sexton got Saban the Miami gig. Less than a week after that happened, there were stories that Nutt was leaving Arkansas for LSU. Biggest scam artist in college football.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:22 PM
Ark: I’d like to thank the Hog nation for waxing SC this weekend. The hit Bequette put on Shaw was BRUTAL…and awesome. Gonna be a huge game in Athens this week. So pumped.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Still a shot at the West division title. Still not as bad as losing to Minny anywhere on the face of the Earth.
That said… LOL Michigan. Denard Robinson CANNOT throw the ball. How they didn’t run all over the Hawkeyes with him is absurd. Bad gameplan.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Nutt will resurface at a division 1 school in a year or two.
Top 3 candidates:
1. Some PAC-12 school
2. Penn State
3. Some Big 12 school

November 7th, 2011 at 12:27 PM
It will be hilarious if OSU ends up winning it all.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
The B1G is really, really bad this year. We are going to get waxed no matter who we send to the BCS. Iowa manages to lose to Minny yet somehow after this past Saturday controls their own destiny in their division. That shouldn’t happen. I hope it is Wisconsin that wins the B1G. They’d at least have a shot in the BCS against someone.
I saw bowl projections this week too. Michigan State by record has the 2nd best record in conference and should play in the B1G title game because their remaining schedule is cake. The projection had them losing to Wisky in the title game then falling all the way to the Texas Bowl because the bowls would choose OSU, Penn State and Michigan over MSU.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:28 PM
that is one of the big reasons people hate him so much around here. in back-to-back years he pulled that shit with LSU and Nebraska, even though everyone knew he didn’t have a chance at either job. well, everyone but the BOT who gave him a raise both times.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
The call on 3rd down to have the call stand as no catch was correct. There was totally interference on 4th down but I’ll take it. Hard for the refs to throw a flag on the final play of a game with that much contact on both sides.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
Ole Miss needs someone to go in there and find a way to keep their in-state talent in state
So they want Ed Orgeron back? Does he actually have to know how to coach this time?
November 7th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
What if you coached at Vandy and lost to Kentucky? Or coached at Kentucky and lost to Vandy? Then would it be acceptable?
/I’ve got nothing constructive to add to the conversation
November 7th, 2011 at 12:30 PM
It would be. Mich State is average, Nebraska is average and that is the cream of one side. Wisconsin is the best team, but they’ve lost two in a row. Ohio State doesn’t trust their QB enough to let him throw the ball (with good reason) and Penn State is offensively abysmal. Just a really bad year for the Big 10. Though they aren’t alone. The SEC is craptastic this year compared to year’s past. 2 elite teams, 1 very good team and then UGA/AUB/SC before you have a big drop to UF and then you have another shit grouping of Tenn, MSU, Ole Miss, Kent and Vandy.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Dear God, I hope not. Ole Miss becoming competitive is the last thing anybody needs.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
The B1G is really, really bad this year. We are going to get waxed no matter who we send to the BCS
That is why the BCS needs a relegation format, like the EPL. If your conference has no deserving team, its berth that year goes to someone more deserving. Like UL-U Pick ‘Em South. Or Houston.
/ May be kidding, not really sure
November 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
I agree the Wisky is the only team that can compete with the big teams in the BCS. Nebraska and Mich State would get worked over.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Depends on who they play.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
It’s too bad Camp Randall doesn’t host a BCS game. That’s WI’s only chance. They’re averaging about 65 points a game there this year.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
only a matter of time until OSU is back on top of the conference.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Arkansas brings it against SC every year, not sure why. Bequette made a couple huge plays on the QB that game, it was a fun game to be at for sure. the wide open drops by the WR’s & RB’s are still a concern. y’alls game this weekend is the 2:30 game right? that should be a fun game.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
If Stanford gets to the NC game is there any way the Rose Bowl would get the Big East champ? Big Ten glory if that happens
November 7th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
Yup. CBS picked it up as the game of the week. UGA-AUB is always fun. Both teams hate each other and the games are almost always close. I was a bit surprised the line opened at -12.5 for UGA. That seems huge to me.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
LOL Michigan. Denard Robinson CANNOT throw the ball
But ND-Michigan this year was an “instant classic,” while LSU-Bama “sucked.”
/ Fuck people who do not recognize good football when they see it
November 7th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I would think Boise might get a call if that happens. Though if Oregon is 10-2 perhaps they sneak into the Rose Bowl.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
The Rose Bowl will try to keep the Big 10 vs. Pac 10 matchup so, if possible, they’d take Oregon.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM

boom. 5 game suspension.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Dear God, I hope not. Ole Miss becoming competitive is the last thing anybody needs.
Hey I love watching them flounder. Just saying that they produce a lot of good talent that goes to LSU, Arkansas, Florida and Bama.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Ole Miss needs to find a way to not be inbetween Louisiana and Alabama.
Mississippi is like Kansas at the height of the Oklahoma/Nebraska rivalry.
Orgeron is the slimiest of the slime. The only reason he got good players was because he took all the thugs, non-qualifiers, and punks who got removed from other SEC programs.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Man, having Jake Bequette back felt great. it’s too bad Childs is no where near healthy, but DJ really looks like his old self. Hamilton and Jarrius dropping a few was disconcerting, but I’m more optimistic now than I’ve been since before the season started.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:37 PM
They have to beat Michigan this year. This is the Wolverines first chance to actually win that game since 2006.
Depending on what happens with Penn State probation wise, next season could be another down year for the B1G. OSU will get better but Wisky loses a ton of guys, MSU does too. Michigan is a wildcard, but they should keep improving. Iowa needs to figure out how to win a damn road game. Nebraska needs an offense.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
Nah, just wait for the Bowling Green game.

November 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
I really want to see an LSU-Stanford title game and a Boise State-Alabama Sugar Bowl. Clemson-OKST would be 60-57 or some shit like that, though I still think OU beats OKST as they always do.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
They said Sugar Bowl reps were in Madison last week, I can’t imagine if they finish 10-2 and outside the championship game they’d be ranked high enough to qualify for at-large status, right? Plus that would just be mean making them play Alabama unless the Tide plays bored again
November 7th, 2011 at 12:39 PM
Pretty sure they’re in the clear as far as the NCAA goes. They might have a problem with god, however.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:40 PM
I really want to see an LSU-Stanford title game and a Boise State-Alabama Sugar Bowl. Clemson-OKST would be 60-57 or some shit like that, though I still think OU beats OKST as they always do
I wouldn’t be against any of that. My only question is do we have to have a Big East rep in this year?
November 7th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
they should keep improving considering they’re regressing like they have the three previous seasons?
November 7th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
10-2 with that traveling fan base would be enticing, but if they don’t win their own division I suspect there will be better options. I think an Alabama-Boise game would be huge. If it was that and an Oklahoma State-LSU title game I would bet the Boise-Bama game would compete very well in terms of ratings. All depends on the date though
November 7th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Without sounding like a homer, couldn’t one make the argument that MSU’s defense will keep them in most games?

This… they only lied to a Grand Jury… that’s child’s play. Now, if they had lied to the the mighty NCAA….
November 7th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
I’m guessing the following:
Champ: LSU – Stanford
Rose: Wisconsin – Oregon
Sugar: Boise St. – Alabama
Fiesta: Oklahoma – Cincinnati
Orange: Clemson – Oklahoma St.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:42 PM
Cincinnati would be bad, but Louisville (with 4 losses already) would be terrible. Can’t wait for WVU to get the fuck outta there.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Gonna be difficult for Stanford to jump many teams when they beat UCLA in the PAC 12 championship.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:43 PM
Oregon gets the last at-large bid, considering their only losses would have come to 1 and 3

Gotta beat Iowa this week. If they lose, Herbie may be right with his preseason prediction on the BIG championship game.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
It’s not the same type of regression though. There isn’t the same level of lack of talent this year.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Outside of the BE ruining one game those all look like great matchups.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Please let Bama play Boise State. PLEASE. I want them to wax that blue ass.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:45 PM
And Cincinnati is going to get the Big East berth, and they gut run out of the stadium by the 9th best team in the SEC. That’s so embarrassing.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:46 PM
I think Stanford’s last four (OR, Cal, ND, and UCLA) is FAR tougher than what Alabama has left.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
MSU will be better next year. Worthy and Cousins are gone. The D-Line will still be good, and Cousins is overrated as fuck.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
What was it? And if Iowa wins this week, the B1G West will come down to Iowa and Nebraska in Lincoln on the last week of the season most likely. Which Iowa will promptly get fucking waxed in and make Taylor Martinez look like Dan fucking Marino.
I’m not looking past Purdue either. Iowa is so, so bad on the road. So bad.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
sure there is…the QB’s not as talented as he was last year in the new offense, even tho he’s the same player. the defense is still shitty, they’re just not as exposed as during RR’s tenure because the offense’s pace is slower.
ND is the best team they’ve beaten and even that required an act of god at the end.
just as there were growing pains going from old michigan to RR’s offense, there were going to be similar ones reverting back after 3.5 recruiting classes for another system.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:47 PM
I’m not confident in that happening.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:48 PM
It’ll be a cripple fight. If MSU stops Marcus Coker, they win. Also… run the fucking ball. You can run all over this Iowa defense. Especially with a mobile QB. Michigan didn’t get that memo.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
I think that can be said for every team in the Big 10.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:49 PM
Iowa/OSU. OSU will be there.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:50 PM

November 7th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
And Bama and LSU would still get the auto bids. Even if we beat LSU, Bama would go to the title game and LSU would probably get the at-large over us if it’s close a close one.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:53 PM

November 7th, 2011 at 12:53 PM
If Texas Tech can beat Oklahoma like they did, Arkansas can beat LSU.
But Oregon gets the at-large bid as the SEC can’t have more than 2 teams in the BCS.
Though, if Arkansas does beat LSU, what’s the division tie-breaker?
November 7th, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Here I thought he had purchased real estate in South Bend a year back.

The funny thing is that if Arkansas beats LSU, Alabama would be back in the driver’s seat because they would most likely have the highest BCS rating.

The one thing you have going for you is that as a fan of Wisconsin, there will be many more painful losses to take your mind off of those two in the years to come.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Well, I do think they have the right coach and DC in place. But they’re obviously a ways away.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:56 PM
terrible? they don’t have a QB, but OSU’s defense and OL and RB’s are better than wisky’s this year.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Sounds reasonable.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
I think it goes to final BCS rankings, but I’m not for sure. I think Arkansas would get dicked though, like Jose said above.
November 7th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
what exactly has hoke done to make you think he’s the right coach? embracing rivalries is great and all, but you gotta prove it and rolling over and letting sparty deepdick you isn’t really inspiring much confidence.
lets see how they do against OSU before we start sucking his popsicle.

November 7th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Brady Hoke’s team has quite possibly the WORST offensive gameplan of any team this year on Saturday. Denard Robinson had twice as many pass attempts as rushing attempts. They also threw FOUR CONSECUTIVE TIMES on the final drive between 1st and 4th with goal to go. They were on the 4 yardline. Denard Robinson throws like an 8 year old girl with muscular dystrophy.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
This is correct.
There are really some fucked-up scenarios being tossed about. Like LSU loses to Arkansas, Alabama goes to the SECCG and loses, LSU gets to the NC on SOS with an at-large bid, and UGA gets the automatic bid. Arkansas and Alabama are locked out the BCS.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:00 PM
Though, if Arkansas does beat LSU, what’s the division tie-breaker?
I think it goes to final BCS rankings, but I’m not for sure. I think Arkansas would get dicked though, like Jose said above
Having just seen Bama lose and drop just behind Ok State and ahead of Stanford and Boise State, I can’t see how Arkansas builds enough momentum to leap ahead of LSU and Bama if they win out.
Though I’m sure a nice Cotton Bowl visit to JerryDome isn’t a bad consolation prize. Maybe a nice game against Texas for old time’s sake?
November 7th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
terrible? they don’t have a QB, but OSU’s defense and OL and RB’s are better than wisky’s this year.
They were nearly shut out at home by MSU a few weeks ago…Toledo had them on the ropes… and UW gave up 33 points. Terrible was probably strong. But they’re not very good. If there was a year we were going to beat them in Columbus, it was this year.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:01 PM
for the love of god, no bama/lsu rematch in the title game. i cant take that shitfest again.
i know those two play great defense, but crap, that was beyond horrid offense.

November 7th, 2011 at 1:03 PM
it’s easy to get shut out when your mobile QB gets hurt and the game’s played in a torrential downpour against a good MSU defense. i guess im just more lenient towards a team playing a bunch of sophomores after an offseason full of turmoil (and that i root for).
but, terrible or not, wisconsin still sucks worse.

Jose, I would be for that as well, but damn the Cap One Bowl is such a poor product all together. it should be a big time bowl and the whole thing sucks besides the match-ups.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:12 PM
Yeah…the 38-14 ass beating will come back to haunt them if each team is 11-1. Bama would play in the championship game.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:14 PM
I’d personally rather play a B1G team like Penn State or something (Just not Wisconsin) in the Citrus.
Or what about a Peach Bowl game against RG III and Baylor? Might not be a fair game, but it’d be interesting to see.
November 7th, 2011 at 1:16 PM
Oh yeah, a Cotton Bowl v Texas would be much better from almost every angle, but if we beat LSU and still had to settle for a non-BCS game, there’s a part of me that would just want to take out my frustrations on a lesser opponent.
I absolutely would not want to play a team like Houston or Boise (if they slip up) with something to prove while we’re dissapointed a la Utah v Bama a couple years ago.
November 7th, 2011 at 3:40 PM
I hear that where ever he lands he intends to bring along Jerry Sandusky because Jerry is the only guy that isn’t interested in Houston’s daughters.
