Will Peyton Manning Ever Wear a Colts Uniform Again?
If you had told me 12 months ago that Peyton Manning might be done as an Indianapolis Colt by the end of the season, I wouldn’t have believed it. He never missed games, and seemed destined to walk away on his own terms at age 38 or 39 like Marino or Elway.
We still don’t know what will happen, but Manning’s comments Thursday at least suggest that he considers it a possibility. Phillip Wilson of the Indianapolis Star says he is “officially leaning beyond 50-50 on [Manning] ever playing in Indy again, if anywhere.”
Manning emphasized that he was part of the negotiation on the structuring of the deal, which gives the Colts an out to walk away from the what he called a one year deal with a 4-year extension this offseason.
It was my recommendation, that I wasn’t healthy when I signed the contract and if I’m not healthy in February, I think it’s fair for the Colts to be able to make their decision there.
The fact that he is mentioning this now suggests Manning is at least coming to grips with the possibility that he and Colts may part ways. He doesn’t know how his neck or how the nerves will respond over the next month. We don’t know what the Colts will need to see from Manning to make that determination. Twenty-eight million is a lot of money.
If it comes to a point where the Colts opt to go elsewhere at quarterback, he won’t be an attractive trade option, at least at the salary amount of the current contract. No team will give up early picks while also taking on the risk of prohibitive contract if the player can’t go. They would at best get conditional picks, or alternatively let him go and start over without risk or compensation.
Something that was unfathomable a year ago seems possible today. Peyton Manning may be done, or at least done in Indianapolis. A lot of other factors, including the draft position and the Andrew Luck factor, may come in. But the Colts may have to make that decision regardless of how those other things fall, if Manning’s neck does not improve in time to make a decision on his next bonus.

If in fact he is done in Indy, he had a helluva run, standing ovate.
/Don’t got to Baltimore

All of this
But I really want to emphasize this.

i think baltimore, arizona, nyj, oak, KC are safe bets to be out of the manning derby if it opens up.

It just wouldn’t feel right if he doesn’t play again. Just not cool at all.

good landing spots
Minnesota, Dallas, Miami, Seattle
all easy to get rid of existing QB w/o cap hits etc.

I’m sure, given his history, he’d have a say where he would be traded. His options are pretty limited, though. He’ll have to play for a team with lights-out pass-blocking, that’s for sure.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:16 PM
also a team where he won’t have to throw the ball 40-50 times a game and can hand the ball off effectively.

Minnesota cant keep renting Junior College transfers with limited eligibility, they’d be best off rolling with Ponder. Seattle’s O Line is probably the worst in the league and they have very mediocre running backs. I think Tennessee could be a fit.

“Will Manning ever play for the Colts again?” is quickly replacing “Will Brett Favre come out of a retirement again?”
But both are still > Tebow.

Had the exact same thought.
I’m wondering if he’ll go the coaching route once he retires. He’s basically been an OC for his entire NFL career.

Why Baltimore?
/obviously Oakland though…they have a franchise QB

I’m wondering if he’ll go the coaching route once he retires.
I could honestly see him going into acting or politics.
/obligatory

And I REALLY want to re-emphasize all of this.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:21 PM
Because that team has been a good QB away from a dynasty for, like, the entire decade.

What would TBL do if the Jets were to trade for Manning and they cut Sanchize loose?
November 4th, 2011 at 4:22 PM
I say he never wears any uniform ever again.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:23 PM
But what Em did was silly.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:24 PM
I didn’t realize Jay gave him a shoutout for destroying him on Renegade. Awesome.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:25 PM
i don’t see them investing that much in the QB position, isn’t ray rice up for a contract, as well as a few keystone defensive players?
November 4th, 2011 at 4:26 PM
I agree. The comment I quoted said that Baltimore would be out of the running…and I couldn’t come up with a reason why.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:27 PM
Did anyone read this piece on the new book coming about about Gabby Giffords from her husband? I teared up reading some of that stuff.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:30 PM
That’s my favorite line of the song for that reason
November 4th, 2011 at 4:35 PM
It would be really sad if he’s done. Definitely the guy I liked watching the most in the NFL that wasn’t on my team. Just an amazing player with the highest football IQ I’ve ever seen. It wouldn’t be fair to get robbed of the guy at just age 35.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:35 PM
I think Tennessee could be a fit.
My first thought when I started hearing trade talk. He is beyond reproach in the state of Tennessee. Finish his career there and he could be Gov. or Sen. Manning the next year.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:38 PM
hard to see Indy trade him within the division.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:39 PM
I can tell you first hand that coming back from a neck surgery is not easy. I have now had 4 cervical fusions with 2 plates. The injury ended my college baseball career and brought me into coaching. My hands are still not right and if I attempt to throw a baseball, a shot goes down my arm, from the shoulder to the hands and it hurts for a while. I now need a steroid injection and possibility of a 5th surgery since the nerves have not regenerated properly. I could see his career being difficult to continue all together.
November 4th, 2011 at 4:42 PM
This is like insider info…I’d like to sell all Manning futures.
/The Dukes are going down.

his older brother had neck surgery and never fully recovered. It would seriously suck if he can’t make it back
