Trading For 35-Year-Old Peyton Manning? Let’s Ask Former Chiefs’ GM Carl Peterson, Who Traded for 36-Year-Old Joe Montana
We’ve been monitoring the Andrew Luck sweepstakes for just about a year now, and increasingly, it looks like the Stanford QB will end up in Miami or Indianapolis.
The Colts appear to have the slight edge because the Dolphins are at least competing and lost their last two games in overtime and the 4th quarter; since a loss to Cincinnati three weeks ago, Indianapolis looks uninterested.
When the conversation turns to Luck and the Colts, speculation centers around two things: 1) Andrew Luck would be an understudy to Peyton Manning for a year or two, then take the baton and carry the franchise for the next 12-15 years, kind of the way Aaron Rodgers replaced Brett Favre in Green Bay and 2) The Colts might consider trading the best player in franchise history and giving the keys to Luck.
Forget about teams giving up No. 1 picks to try and get Andrew Luck … what about teams trading for Peyton Manning?
What might a 4-time NFL MVP be worth? Recently, I spoke with Carl Peterson, former GM of the Kansas City Chiefs. We talked about Andrew Luck. And trades. And the draft. Peterson knows a bit about trading for aging QBs around draft time: In 1993, he shook up the Chiefs’ franchise by trading for 36-year old Joe Montana, who at the time was a bigger deal than Manning is now (Montana was a 3-time Super Bowl MVP). Manning turns 36 in March, less than a month before the 2012 draft.
“I never like to give up 1st round draft choices,” Peterson told me. “I would only give them up for an experienced, very talented, proven quarterback. And I did that in 1993 when I traded for a guy named Joe Montana,” he said with a chuckle. “I had no problem doing that. He took us to an AFC title game the next year.”
In 1992, the Chiefs lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs to the Bills, and then in the first round in 1993 to the Chargers. It was evident after getting blanked by San Diego that 34-year-old Dave Kreig’s best years were behind him, which led to the trade for Montana. San Francisco had Steve Young ready to take over the 49ers’ offense, and despite Montana’s popularity, the 49ers dealt him, a safety and a third round pick in 1994 for KC’s 1993 first-rounder (18th overall).
Montana led the Chiefs to the AFC title game, but suffered a concussion and was knocked out in the third quarter and the Bills cruised to victory, 30-13. (Shocking stat: The Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game – 0-6 – since the two Montana led them to in 1993).
While Peterson, like everyone else, is enamored with Andrew Luck – “I know his dad pretty well and I salute Andrew for staying in school to get his degree” – he’s still a little skittish and old school when it comes to all the hype. “I have to smile when they say [Luck is a] franchise QB. With all due respect to Mel Kiper, he wouldn’t know that. He’s never coached, He’s never made those tough decisions. All the indications are there [with Luck], but there have been a couple of big busts, too. Like the Raiders giving JaMarcus Russell $60 million.”
Obviously the new CBA changes things, since No. 1 picks are now getting a paltry $22 million over 4 years. But the proven vs. potential discussion is bound to surface if the Colts finish with the worst record in football.
Peterson worries about Luck trying to live up to the considerable hype, and possibly being surrounded by inferior talent, wherever he lands. “Teams that get talented, young QBs don’t have the supporting cast, and he’s in living hell for three years,” he said. “If he survives that and maintains his confidence, he can be successful.” Sam Bradford is in St. Louis, but it might as well be hell. Luck would have to deal with a crumbling dynasty – the offensive line, defense and receivers are mostly on the wrong side of 30 – but in Miami he’d have Brandon Marshall and a decent RB tandem of Daniel Thomas and Reggie Bush.
*
Football is a business, so sure, the Colts could conceivably trade Peyton Manning. The market for Manning might include teams like Washington, Cleveland, Seattle, and maybe San Francisco. But since the Montana deal in 1993, trading for a franchise QB has gotten very expensive. Guys like Jay Cutler and Carson Palmer – yes, I typed Carson Palmer with a straight face – have commandeered much more than what the Chiefs got Montana for.
Cutler and a 5th round pick went to Chicago in 2009 for Kyle Orton, 2 first-rounders and a third rounder. Last month, the Raiders gave up a 1st round pick and another pick (could be a 1st, depending on production) for Palmer. Regardless of what you think about quarterback wins as a stat, it should be noted that Cutler and Palmer had a combined 0 playoff victories prior to their trades. (Cutler got the Bears to the NFC title game last year; the Broncos are sputtering.) Manning has guided the Colts to the playoffs for nine straight seasons.
Carl Peterson believes even successful, non-franchise QBs like Trent Green can be better than a 1st round draft pick. Green was a Peterson special in 2001 – he gave up a 1st-round pick for Green and a 5th round pick. After a strong early/mid-90s, the Chiefs missed the playoffs in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and Peterson pulled the trigger on the trade for Green. Thanks to the emergence of Green and Priest Holmes, the Chiefs went from 6-10 to 8-8 to 13-3. The Rams, meanwhile, spent that No. 12 pick on someone named Damione Lewis. A defensive end from Miami, Lewis had 22.5 sacks in an underwhelming career.
“You have to find someone who would make that trade, and finding a willing partner isn’t always easy,” Peterson said about the Montana and Green trades.
Somehow, I don’t think the Colts would have any problems finding a taker on Peyton Manning if they decide to trade him.
Let’s say you’re the Redskins or Browns or Seahawks drafting in the Top 12. You need a QB, but maybe have some reservations about Matt Barkley or Landry Jones being the face of the franchise for a decade. Do you consider trading that No. 1 pick and more for Peyton Manning? (The Redskins tried something similar recently with Donovan McNabb, but that failed spectacularly.) Manning will sell tickets, hope and given his history (and how terrible the Colts are without him), could probably get any of those teams to the playoffs.

Do you consider trading that No. 1 pick and more for Peyton Manning?
Is Manning’s defective neck included?
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:34 PM
TBL -
Does Peterson still have the five pack of cigs voice? That was his best trait. His ankle length leather coat that matched his leather face were his best accessories.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:36 PM
I really, really hate this argument.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:37 PM
Nah, System Joe’s last good year had been 1990.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:37 PM
I remember hearing Joe Montana and Eddie DeBartolo met for a sandwich and things were supposedly looking up. Three days later he was on the Chiefs. It was a tough week on the playground.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:38 PM
All this speculating on the Colts drafting Luck, parting ways with Manning or auctioning off their top pick to the highest bidder is fairly pointless until there’s concrete information on the status and future outlook of Manning and his neck.
That said, pick one or the other, pick a direction and stick to it. Either trade the pick for help now to try and win another title with Manning in the next three-four years (as bad as the NFL is, it won’t take much to be a contender) or let Manning go and rebuild around Luck.
One or the other. Not both.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:38 PM
How much would system and who the OC was to Peyton Manning?
Would he play in a west coast system, for example?
Also, if you were the GM negotiating with the Colts, you know that the Colts would probably use what Oakland paid for Carson Palmer as a negotiating floor, which would probably be unacceptable, IMO.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:39 PM
I don’t think Indy trades Manning unless he asks to be traded to a contender.
That being said, if I am Peyton, I look at Baltimore or NYJ. Both are teams with strong supporting casts being held back by the inconsistent/underwhelming QB play. Maybe throw in Minny and KC, though they are not as talented as they other two.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:39 PM
you’d have to think even Manning would be on board with a trade seeing as how terrible the rest of the team is without him. he’s not worth 12 wins alone.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:39 PM
Ugh. That should have read: “How much would system and who the OC was matter to Peyton Manning?

Haha, nice.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:41 PM
The team was worse than it is now last year, and more injury-stricken, and they still went 10-6. This narrative about the Colts being terrible this year even with Manning is wrong. Consistently bandied about, mostly by Bill Simmons and the New England media, but incorrect.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:42 PM
If Andrew Luck turns out to be more Eli than Peyton, does that make him a bust? Of course I’m talking talent/ability not rings.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:42 PM

November 3rd, 2011 at 1:44 PM
Especially since Carl himself has never proven to identify a franchise QB.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:45 PM
Trade Peyton, just because it would be so effing weird to see him in a Cardinals/Redskins/whoever jersey.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:46 PM
i’m in the camp that even if Manning did play this year the team would be .500 at best when the year ended. they’ve got a lot of problems that manning alone won’t fix.
he can mask it so the team could delay fixing it, but they would still be there and only getting worse.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:46 PM
I think that was Carl’s point. No one can/should say that about a QB coming out of college.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:47 PM
Did this guy really compare Jamarcus Russell to Andrew Luck? My god. Jamarcus was a purple drank slurping idiot who got drafted by a dumb ass organization because he has a bazooka of an arm and had a really good bowl game. Andrew Luck is a good student, with good tools who has been a standout player for a team with limited athletic ability.
The kids true comparables are guys that started for 3-4 years and consistently showed the ability to perform and win. Guys like Rivers, Eli, Peyton, Brees, McNabb. Personally I see Luck as hybrid of Big Ben and Peyton Manning. He can’t spin it like Aaron Rodgers, he doesn’t have an arm like Elway or Farve, he’s not as athletic as a young McNabb. Hell if you asked any GM if they could have a athletic version of Peyton Manning they would all spontaneously ejaculate.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:47 PM
isn’t Carl Pederson the guy Chiefs fans wanted fired for so many years before he finally left?
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:47 PM
wow, manning with the cardinals, that could be fun to watch.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:48 PM

November 3rd, 2011 at 1:50 PM
Both > Tebow
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:50 PM
If that is what he was trying to say then why mention the part about coaching and “making tough decisions” as reasons why someone can’t make such a judgement?
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:50 PM
isn’t Carl Pederson the guy Chiefs fans wanted fired for so many years before he finally left?
Pretty much, although forced out might be a better way of describing it.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:50 PM
I think he only did that as a way to take a shot at Mel Kiper Jr. I don’t think he meant it literally.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:51 PM
It’s essentially the SAME team as last year. And of their first eight opponents, SEVEN of them have been of the “quality” level. And even with Painter they had the lead or were driving to take the lead in the fourth quarter of five of their eight games.
Their running game and linebackers are actually improved from last year, while their secondary and Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark have both declined. So that’s a wash.
They’re the same. The team was DESIGNED around Manning. I’m not saying he alone is “worth” 10 wins, but what he brings to the team in terms of scheme, limiting the time the defense is on the field, negating the importance of the crappy field position the ST gives him, is worth 10 wins.

November 3rd, 2011 at 1:52 PM
backlash on the popular kid!
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:53 PM
Absolutely. You don’t take Luck and sit him two, three years. And you don’t push a healthy Peyton Manning out the door if he still has three or four seasons left. One or the other. Not both. Of course, it’s all contingent on Manning’s health. Until that’s known, like I said, speculation is just that.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:53 PM
I don’t think it would matter as Peyton would essentially render that OC expendable.
For example….
Kyle Shannahan: Peyton! Great to finally meet you. I’m really excited about working you into our scheme and scripting an offense just like my Dad did with Elway!
Peyton Manning: (Pats Kyle on the head) Slow down there youngin, I’ll be handling things from here on out. Now go get me a juicebox.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:53 PM

November 3rd, 2011 at 1:58 PM
At least he won’t have to worry about packing and moving a Heisman Trophy if he gets traded.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:59 PM
If it’s just a year, then it’s really a wasted season, as far as the organization goes. Unless he’s sitting behind Curtis Painter. Because if you draft Luck but Manning’s still the starter, your top pick is sitting on the bench all year, just like the Colts’ last three number one picks. If Manning is staying, it’s because the Colts think he still has three or four years left and the team can contend with him at the helm.
If they don’t think that’s the case, they should let Manning walk and begin the rebuilding process. I think any overlap between Manning and Luck just sets you back.
November 3rd, 2011 at 1:59 PM
The most prominent was Phil Simms, who I’m really starting to dislike.
Luck has been picked apart and watched and looked at and sometimes, a prospect (in any sport) suffers from that kind of exposure because talent evaluators begin to almost manufacture flaws for whatever reason.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:00 PM
TJ – Yes. Lisk will probably chime in at some point. Peterson likes veterans over youth, and at the tail end, it hurt him badly.
but for awhile, he did a really good job turning over the roster and not really having to rebuild.

it also reduces the kind of take for Manning in a trade.
if they can get at least 2 #1′s and a few more picks in the 2nd and 3rd round they’d have to take a hard look at that. You don’t get that kind of haul for Luck.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:02 PM
And yet when Landry Jones runs .2 faster than Luck in the Combine, some Bozo is going to manufacture a “Is Landry Jones better than Oliver Luck” controversy.

November 3rd, 2011 at 2:09 PM
He’s exactly what Peyton was. A 4-year starter giving football fans awkward wood. He’s ready to dazzle you.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:09 PM
I didn’t say that. But what’s the point in bringing back Manning for just a year, tying up over a quarter of your cap money in QB’s, not having a first rounder that will contribute and knowing that your roster is good enough to get to the playoffs, but once there will be soundly beaten by a better team.
And then after that year you turn it over to Luck. It’s a wasted season. I think you go one way or the other. And with Saturday’s contract up, Wayne’s contract up and Dallas Clark not playing up to the level of his contract, I hate to say it, but drafting Luck and letting Manning go might be the smarter play.
I’d rather Manning return healthy and them use the picks to load up for one more title run, but I can see how that might be shortsighted. That’s why it’s probably not super awesome that an octogenarian who won’t be tied to the team much longer might be the one who makes the call.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:10 PM
Tend to agree that it’s got to be either Manning or Luck based on money, holes on the team, and an angry mob fan base revolting on every Manning pick.
If you trade Manning to the Dolphins (assuming they’re picking 2nd), you could get a high-impact OL/DL and quickly inject some youth into an aging franchise
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:11 PM
isn’t Mathis up, too?
Lots of potential holes in that team.
Trading Manning quickly starts to fill lots of them.
You don’t want Luck entering a crumbling dynasty.

Yup. Plus, what Manning would potentially be worth in a trade. That would be vital information too. I can’t think it’d be much what with the potential injury risk he’d carry now.

Why would the Dolphins make this trade?
A decade’s worth of incompetence while trying to plug holes with over the hill cast-offs from other franchises lays down a nice little precedent.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Grizz – the Dolphins will be getting a new coach & maybe a new GM, too.
The quickest way to fill an empty stadium and get back into the playoffs is by getting a guy like Peyton Manning.
you bring back Henne/Moore to lead your team and disaster will happen. For job security, you can’t do much better than Manning. Bess isn’t bad. Marshall can be good. Manning could instantly vault them into contention in the AFC for a playoff spot.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:15 PM
Yeah, Mathis is also up, as is Garcon. I think you have to resign Mathis and Garcon, given that DE’s tend to last longer and Garcon won’t be THAT expensive. Let Wayne walk and, depending on how his contract breaks down, cut Clark. Cut Brackett. Let Saturday walk. Lot of cap money coming free this year. Not really losing that much talent, relative to what it will cost to replace it or even upgrade it.
With a healthy Manning, that much cap room and a potential Luck bounty, the Colts could easily contend in the next 3-4 years. But that’s asking for A LOT of things to go right. It’s super risky. It’s ideal, but super risky.
The smart play is letting the veterans go and building around Luck.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:17 PM

The Colts should try to duplicate Emtman and Coryatt. That was awesome.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:17 PM
I think this year’s top pick, based on Luck and his level of potential, and with the new salary cap rules for early picks, is easily the most valuable in league history. No telling what it could potentially yield. But the Colts, if they do get it, would be fools to not at least see how much they could get for it.

All depends on his bill of health. From what I’ve heard and read, it sounds like February is the all-important breaking point as far as how long the Colts can wait before releasing him. He has to have an all clear before then before another team would seriously consider it, I think. Then again, you’d hate to be the next Dolphins who pass on Drew Brees because of an injury concern.

Yeah, I get that, but three years is three years. A lot of franchises would like to be relevant for three years.
Dolphins have been trying and failing to do this for the past 10 years… they need to build through the draft. Look at Green Bay. All home grown talent, hardly any trades or FA signings.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:26 PM
which means they’ll probably do it.
Oh yeah… I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.. I’m just saying it’s really really dumb.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:26 PM
God, if he went to Baltimore, the Unitas comparisons would jump to a whole new level. And he’d have to wear purple. Purple!

I think he just got an extension, though I could be wrong. But it wouldn’t be the first time Newsome traded for a QB from an AFC South team after spending a 1st rounder on another QB. They got Mcnair a few years after drafting Boller.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:29 PM
drafting Boller.
lol Kyle Boller. Although, I should probably tip my cap. Married a smokeshow.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:29 PM
I’m just going to pretend that Manning and Ravens have never been mentioned in the same sentence, and I didn’t see any of that shit that was just written.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:29 PM
We don’t know that yet. Once it is known, there will be plenty of interest.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:29 PM
Colts owe a small piece of their 2006 Lombardi to McNair. He was legendarily bad in that playoff game. Part of it was the Colts’ defense, sure, but still. Thanks, Steve.

November 3rd, 2011 at 2:31 PM
Out of any possiblity, he would definitely look the weirdest in a Ravens uniform. Redskins are a close 2nd though.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:32 PM
Barstool sports is blocked. What’s the story behind the brother sister engagement? Were they adopted
I don’t think so… just separated at a really young age… mother left the father because he was cheating on her and took one of the kids or vice-versa. It was out of South Africa.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:32 PM
Separated in a divorce, the mom raised the daughter and the dad raised the son.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:33 PM
She was cheating on him actually.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:33 PM
They didn’t find out until they introduced each other to their future “in-laws” SG.
“Their parents separated when the woman was eight months old and the man was two years old. ‘The man’s father said he dumped his wife in 1983 because she was cheating on him. The girl was raised by her mother, while her brother was raised by his father. ‘Neither of them knew they had a sibling.’”

parents split when son was 2 and daughter was 3 mos…they met in college and when they introduced their parents to each other…BAM. brotherfuckin’.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:34 PM
@SG – Here’s the link to the Daily Mail. Basically, the parents split up when they were 2 and 1, the dad took the son, the mom took the daughter and they didn’t have any knowledge of each other growing up.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Now that’s a video I’d pay to watch. Talk about awkward.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:35 PM
And they pretended that the other child and parent didn’t exist? How did they find out they were siblings? This story sounds completely fake.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:35 PM
8 mos…my mistake.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:36 PM
Future “In-laws” were meeting before the nuptials.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:37 PM
How did they find out they were siblings? This story sounds completely fake
So cynical… they found out when they were introduced to their in-laws. The mom and dad recognized each other… “uh oh… yeah, ummm… we had a kid together way back in the day, didn’t we?”
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:37 PM
The son was only 2 and the daughter 8 months, they wouldn’t have known better. And it’s not that far fetched to believe the parents had no contact after she was whoring around on him.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:37 PM

November 3rd, 2011 at 2:38 PM
Barstool sports is blocked. What’s the story behind the brother sister engagement? Were they adopted?
I bet they wish they were.
The parents separated in the early 80s and each took one of the children. Neither the mother nor the father told the daughter or the son that they had a sibling. And by an amazing coincidence the children grew up separately but went to the same university where they met and fell in love. And she’s 8 months pregnant with their child.

Working in college administration, I can tell you now that it happens a lot. Well the former does. The latter I cannot speak to.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:41 PM
Based on the fact that it’s on the internet, I agree.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:41 PM
If this is what the parents did, that is exactly how not to behave after a divorce involving children.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:42 PM
What if you keep Manning and draft Luck, with the intention of getting the buying price for Peyton up to a record high? Suppose doctors come out in February and say, “he’s cool, he can play,” but that only results in an offer of a couple. But if he comes back and plays like he has before, the Colts can say, “it’ll cost you a first and third in 2012, PLUS a second in 2013, with the possibility of bumping it up to another first.” Etc….
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Knowing what I know about divorce and divorce with children, it is on this point that I’ll call bullshit on this story.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:42 PM
Based on the fact that it’s on the internet, I agree.
So any news story on the internet is fake? Ok.

I really do wonder if that’s why they won’t put him on IR. Just so he can play a couple games and prove he’s good to go.
Yes. The whole point of me saying that was so that it would be taken 100% seriously, with 0% sarcasm, and extrapolated to every story that has ever appeared on the internet.

Not only that but if the mom met her daughter’s fiance, you’d think she’d recognize a family resemblance TO HER SON! This is a bullshit story.

I have seen a father just cut all contact off with his kids after divorce. Plus, haven’t you people ever seen the “Parent Trap”?
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:51 PM
I’d think I’d take Cam over Luck right now. It may change based on what Luck does in the league next year, but I know Cam is an NFL caliber QB.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:53 PM
It said the two families didn’t meet until they were to discuss wedding arrangements. That to me meant all four members. They didn’t say anything about the mom meeting her daughter’s fiance separately or the dad meeting his son’s fiance separately. Also, they’ve seen pictures I’m sure!!!
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:53 PM
Of all things you’d make up to gain 15 minutes of fame… WHY would you chose a story that involves sleeping with your sister or brother? So you’d have that stigma attached to you for the rest of your life? That seems more far fetched than completely cutting off contact to the other parent.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:56 PM
LOL!
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:56 PM
My mom and dad divorced when I was 3 and my dad had ZERO contact with me until I reached out to him when I was around 16. This really isn’t uncommon to have a parent lose contact with a child.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:56 PM
I don’t know much about Luck specifically to comment, but I agree with this in general. 1st round QB’s (even the good ones) are still 50% hit/50% miss, right?
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:59 PM
You would think the mother would have at least asked the name of her daughter’s fiance.
November 3rd, 2011 at 2:59 PM
I haven’t seen the story, so my only opinion is that I’m skeptical until I see some convincing reporting on it. Did your dad recognize you right away? I guess if it’s not something you were thinking of when you saw the pic, you wouldn’t necessarily put your finger on it and click right away and say “hey he/she looks like me”, but if you gave up a kid with the same name…
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:00 PM
Apparently they don’t have Facebook in South Africa. If they did, the story would be completely unbelievable.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Bet you that mom went back to her maiden name and changed the daughter’s also. It really is not all that uncommon. You guys have never heard of women getting custody then just taking the kids away?
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:03 PM
why has nobody addressed the fact that we simply CANNOT allow Andrew Luck to be drafted by the Colts? I mean, the Colts have a fucking horseshoe on their helmets and the dude’s last name is Luck. the punny headlines would be horrendous.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:03 PM
Yes, but you knew your other parent existed!! That’s the whole point! And ATL, I didn’t say they were doing it for fame. They haven’t even released the names of any of the individuals involved. I just think it’s a bullshit story.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Yes.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:04 PM
And I’m pretty sure you’d recognize your ex-husband’s last name when your daughter told you her fiance’s full name!
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:04 PM
Yes, but when the daughter came home and says “Mom, I’m getting married”
Mom: Oh that’s great. What’s his name?
Daughter: Sam Fakename
Mom: [slow eyebrow raise]
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:05 PM
Too many variables to put a percentage on it. I am just basing this on the fact the Newton has filled all the hype and consistently shown the ability to be successful QB in the NFL. Conversely, I would take Luck over somebody like Bradford, who has only shown me a low ceiling of an average QB.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:06 PM
I meant first name. Even a common name, if you knew you gave up a kid named “Jennifer” and your son brought home a Jennifer that looked like your ex-wife (or you saw a picture), you’d do a double-take, even if it wasnt the first thing on your mind.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:08 PM
I only knew he existed because my mom told me so. But what if my mom hadn’t said anything? Then I wouldn’t have known he existed, or who he was specifically, at all.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:08 PM
This isn’t the unbelievable part. Its the fact that each parent decided to keep a kid and chose to have no contact with the other. If you’re going into parent mode, why keep them separate. If I HATED my ex-wife and never wanted to see her again, I would either get sole custody or give her sole custody. This just seems like a hackey Disney movie plot gone wrong/
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:11 PM
You don’t think there would have ever been a point in time you would have wanted to know something about your father? Even if your mom made up some story about him dying, don’t you think you would have tried to find out something about his family?

November 3rd, 2011 at 3:15 PM
Gotta keep in mind the wife was cheating… if that happened, wouldn’t you take your kid, and let the wife raise the one that is some other dude’s (if that was the case)?
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
can we please get back to the point that the Colts have a horseshoe on their helmet and Andrew Luck’s last name is in fact Luck?
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Even if that was the case, I would not separate siblings. At least not with the intent to never have them know about each other.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:21 PM
Well obviously I did, that’s why I reached out to him. But there are some kids who grow up with the feeling of abandonment and resentment, and why should they reach out to their parent when that parent bailed on them and took off.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:24 PM
i wonder: is Newton experiencing a banner start because defenses weren’t ready for him?
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:27 PM
What does this mean? Were defenses ready for the other 31 QBs, but forgot about him? Its not like there haven’t been mobile qbs with strong accurate arms before.
Please elaborate, because this statement confuses me.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:28 PM
Would have been way worse had he gone to Notre Dame… relax.
November 3rd, 2011 at 3:32 PM
You could also say that, independent of Newton, that teams didn’t have film of what Carolina might do because they had a new coaching staff this year.
Not now, however. Newtown is legit, IMO. I wish I could say I had that right from the beginning.
November 3rd, 2011 at 5:44 PM
Especially since Carl himself has never proven to identify a franchise QB.
does that mean Chuck Fusina wasn’t a franchise quarterback?
November 3rd, 2011 at 6:59 PM
Brawny – nobody had seen Newton prior to this year. People know what they are getting in other QBs – tendencies, favorite targets, etc. Learned stuff over the years.
Newton was an unknown entity.
that being said, LOVE him
November 3rd, 2011 at 7:32 PM
I would say they had college film on him and Chud’s offense is nothing too new. Its the same concepts he has had since Cleveland days. Also, by that line of thinking, all the rookies should be having initial success, but Gabbert can’t even get to 100 yards consistently and while Dalton/Green are doing ok, they aren’t blowing up.
I think Newton’s success is due to A) his talent b) some good skill players around him, notably Steve Smith c) great play calling, especially with the use of the TEs. Maybe his initial success in the 1st couple of games could be him surprising, but he is sustaining it as the season progresses.
November 4th, 2011 at 2:21 PM
Carl is right about Mel. Mel’s just an analyst. He’s not a coach or a player. Just hearing the words Mel Kiper almost makes me vomit.
