It Has Been a Miserable Year For Big Ten Football
Big Ten football has long mirrored the Rust Belt region it encompasses. That has normally manifested itself in methodical, prosaic offense, but, 2011, the conference has managed to channel poignantly the depression and economic decay occurring around it. This has been a miserable year to be a Big Ten fan. Nebraska and Michigan fans are in a decent place. Every other school has been mired in its own particular brand of malaise.
Illinois: For the rest of the country, Ron Zook is a punchline. For Illinois fans he is an ever-present reality. His teams have hot starts and flashes of brilliance, which only add heft to their inevitable and catastrophic declines. With three-straight losses and back to back engagements with Michigan and Wisconsin on the docket, the Illini are set to pull a full Ron Zook before the season’s end.
Indiana: The Hoosiers normally stink, but the first year under Kevin Wilson has been especially egregious. Indiana is 0-8 against FBS competition, performing so poorly they scared away hometown hero Gunner Kiel. Wilson is now starting 12 freshmen because has that little faith in his upperclassmen. This is happening at a program with one winning season since 1995.
Iowa: Kirk Ferentz is one of the highest-paid college football coaches in the country. He has road losses to Iowa State and Minnesota this season, similar to the losses at Northwestern and Minnesota last season, Northwestern in 2009, as well as Northwestern, Illinois and Michigan State in 2008. The program has also had a few other difficulties.
Michigan State: Another inexplicable egg laid on the road. Sparty’s 24-3 dismantling by Nebraska was eerily reminiscent of their 37-6 blowout at Iowa last season. Both losses may end up costing them the Big Ten title.
Minnesota: The Golden Gophers have dealt with Jerry Kill’s health problems. They also lost to both New Mexico State and North Dakota State at home. Their upset of Iowa improved their average B1G margin, to four touchdowns in the red.
Northwestern: Dan Persa’s Heisman campaign was aborted before it began. The dark-horse Legends division candidacy never materialized. The Wildcats lost to Army. They blew chances that could have won games against Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Penn State. Beating Indiana is little solace. In a defense-centric conference, the Wildcats have allowed at least 34 points to each B1G opponent.
Ohio State: Buckeye fans got their swagger back with the Wisconsin win. They have a stout defense. They have a formidable power running game. If they only had say a versatile senior quarterback, a playmaker at wideout and a more seasoned head coach, they would be undisputed favorites in this year’s Big Ten and probably in the BCS Title mix. There’s the facepalm.
Penn State: The Nittany Lions are 8-1, though watching them get there has been a dour experience. Their offense is terrible. One quarterback has been below average but tolerable. The other one has been a heaping bucket a stink but has upside. With the latter a transfer risk, they must play both. Penn State is 88th in yards per play. Only UConn and UAB have a worse touchdown percentage in the red zone. Wins, they have had, but it has been ugly.
Purdue: Danny Hope’s first year was at least exciting to watch. The Boilermakers have lost 10/13 against FBS teams. Wins against Minnesota and Middle Tennessee State by a field goal weren’t too impressive either. Back to back dates with Wisconsin and Ohio State the next two weekends. Yikes.
Wisconsin: Consecutive sucker-punch losses on the road cast the Badgers from BCS title contention to the rear-view mirror in the B1G Leaders Division race. Four winnable games left to get to Indianapolis, but the missed opportunity will linger.

I really hope Kill can get this program going, but it’s going to take a while.

I think this article has been written every November for the last 8 years.

I know that you mention the QBs, but the rest of the offense is pretty solid. QB is really really dragging down what could be a good team.

the big 10 has always been boring and offensively retarded. what topic is next? landing on the moon?
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:17 PM
Well, they made sure he’ll be here for a while to do it.

Note to self: Nebraska destroying Michigan State, in spite of an obvious talent gap favoring Nebraska in approximately 99% of all cfb seasons including this one, is inexplicable. I learned something today

I think this line, or at least the subject matter of the link, should have been placed at the end of the MSU blurb. All the stuff before the Iowa blurb is unfortunately true.
Kirk better beat ISU, Minnesota, @MSU and one of Michigan or Nebraska next season. Program needs the boost. He’s definitely trending down right now. The failures to make adjustments has been the most disappointing part. Being completely unprepared for plays he wouldn’t run (fake punt vs. WISC last year, two onside kicks against Minny) has to stop.

There’s a team that is noticeably absent from this list. I am hardly surprised though. I guess I’ll do it.
Michigan: Denard Robinson, despite being one of the most exciting college football players in the last 30 years, still cannot grasp the concept of throwing the football. They lost for the 4th year in a row to in-state rival Michigan State… who was promptly dump-trucked by Nebraska. They still haven’t beaten Michigan since hemp necklaces were en vogue. With the Buckeyes recent success, it’s looking less and less promising that the steak will stop this season.

Wilson is now starting 12 freshmen
But are they true freshmen?

I should proofread. Steak should never stop. The streak against Ohio State won’t either.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:29 PM
This is why Nebraska went to the B1G…they just have to compete with OSU most years.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:30 PM
I just figured steak was a Hoke reference.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:31 PM
6 teams in the conference aren’t terrible.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:32 PM
Usually OSU and one other team from their own division. Whether that be Michigan, Michigan State or Iowa. Hoke is doing nice things. It’ll be interesting to see what he does when Robinson graduates. Running a prototypical B1G offense that’s built behind a massive offensive line would serve him well in conference.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:35 PM
I wouldn’t be so quick to ignore Michigan and Wisconsin.
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:52 PM
If my math is correct, the nearly dead Big XII is the only nonhorrible conference right now if the B1G is considered to be struggling
November 2nd, 2011 at 5:58 PM
michigan can suck a fat dick.
November 2nd, 2011 at 6:00 PM
and yet, michigan didn’t belong on the field with sparty and needed ND to vomit all over themselves to squeak one out but they’re just fine. just fine.

Denard Robinson, despite being one of the most exciting college football players in the last 30 years

I do enjoy how Duffy wrote a post about the Big 10′s problems and didn’t even consider those of Michigan. Yes they are playing better than they were under Rich Rod, but if you’re going to write about the conference, write about EVERY team’s flaws.
November 2nd, 2011 at 6:49 PM
everybody who played offense for OSU against MSU should be tarred and feathered.
November 2nd, 2011 at 6:55 PM
Meh, I’m still watching and usually enjoying B1G action. SEC is largely crap after the Big2. The Big 12 flag football league is a joke. Dont even get me started on the PAC 12.
Its like a Notre Dame kegger, the women are all kinda ugly but you take what you can get when you can get it.
November 2nd, 2011 at 7:12 PM
you mean those freshmen and sophomores that played against one of the three best defenses in the conference in a torrential rain? yea…shame on them for not rolling up one more score.

Don’t know if anyone’s pointed it out yet, but the Forde-Yard Dash has been resurrected on Yahoo.

Saw a great stat this morning:
Since 2006, Iowa has lost 9 games where they have been favored by 10 points or more. Let me repeat that for emphasis, 9 games lost where they were 10+ point favorites!
That is just jaw dropping.

It’s not about flaws. It’s about fan sentiment. What are Michigan fans upset about from this season?
November 2nd, 2011 at 10:27 PM
This has been a great year for Michigan fans.
